Level 2 cache (L2)

L2 (level 2) cache is slower than L1 cache, but in return it has a higher capacity, allowing it to cache more data. It, like L1, is much faster than system memory (RAM). If the processor does not find the requested data in L2, it continues to look for it in the L3 cache (if available) or in RAM memory.

Removable

While you and I are talking every day about all sorts of new iPhones, flagship Samsung and Sony, the mass market is going its own way, demanding new inexpensive models. Even if they are dressed in simple cases, equipped with inexpensive screens and cameras, mid-budget solutions for Android today offer fairly rich functionality and decent performance. A year ago, the very fact that a smartphone in the price category of up to two thousand hryvnia (about 8 thousand rubles) had a quad-core processor would have been surprising in itself. Four cores, two SIM cards, an IPS screen: Before us is an inexpensive but promising Lenovo A706.

Lenovo A706 Specifications

Equipment

Cardboard box. It contains a power adapter (fortunately, with a domestic plug), a USB-microUSB cord, a vacuum headset with three pairs of attachments. And, of course, instructions. Everything, including the smartphone, is white.

Design and build

If you take a casual look at the smartphone, it may seem more expensive than it actually is, thanks to the pleasant design and materials (in the overwhelming majority). The entire front panel is covered with a layer of thin glass, slightly recessed relative to the side. The ends and part of the lid are made of white gloss, not too easily soiled and not subject to damage.

But the silver insert at the top of this very cover is somewhat disappointing: from a distance it may look good, but in feel and essence it is very simple plastic. It will most likely quickly lose its appearance and become covered with scratches. And it’s not the most pleasant to the touch.

I don’t know whether this insert made the design much cheaper, or whether it made it cheaper at all (after all, it’s easier to make a one-piece lid than with an insert). It seems to me that in any case such an idea could be safely abandoned.

However, appearance for a smartphone, especially an inexpensive one, is not everything. But the lid is durable, as for a polycarbonate solution. Naturally, after removing it, you can bend it, but you can feel that the sheet is somewhat thicker and stronger than that of many plastic counterparts, including more expensive ones. And in general, the assembly is pleasing: a budget smartphone with a collapsible body has no gaps, and no squeaks are heard when pressed. More precisely, they will be audible, but only if you hold the smartphone with both hands in landscape orientation and press on the very edges of the rear cover, top and bottom, with your thumbs, away from the screen, while keeping your other fingers in the center of the cover... The explanation turned out to be very complicated , while the problem is tiny, considering that it is in this direction that the cover is removed: to do this, you need to pry a special recess on the bottom edge with your fingernail. Here she is in the photo.

Under the hood there is a 2000 mAh battery, two slots for SIM cards, one of which supports 3G, as well as for a memory card. To install the latter in a smartphone, the battery will have to be removed. Below the screen we see a speaker (on the cover, by the way, next to its slots you can see the inscription DOLBY Digital Plus), above it is a camera with a flash.

The volume controls are located at the top of the right side, the power button is at the top, also to the right. It seemed to me that the location is more favorable for both left-handers and right-handers, but you need to hold the smartphone with a different grip depending on your hand. On top is a headset jack.

And on the left side there is a lonely black microUSB without a plug.

Nothing remarkable, but for the price it's very good. And one more thing: I would like to note the optimal parameters, in my opinion, for most hands: a 4.5-inch screen fits into a fairly narrow (69 millimeters) body with a length of 136 millimeters.

The thickness is 10 millimeters, not a record, but normal, as is the weight of 130 grams. The main thing that can be taken away from these parameters is that the device fits perfectly in the hand. After numerous “shovels,” I finally remembered what it was like to operate an Android smartphone with one hand.

Display

The display size, in my opinion, is optimal for a smartphone that does not belong to the “plafond” class: 4.5 inches. It is also made using IPS technology, so viewing the picture from different viewing angles will not be difficult. The brightness and contrast of the smartphone turned out to be at an acceptable average level, the colors were somewhat pale, falling into the cold spectrum, but quite pleasant.

Samsung Galaxy S4 320 0
Sony Xperia T 421 0.28 1503:1
iPhone 4S 434 0.53 818:1

The resolution of 480x854 pixels seems archaic, but together with a 4.5-inch diagonal we get good pixel density and fairly clear fonts.

Yes, one more thing: suddenly during the test I discovered that the smartphone only implements two-point multi-touch. It was the suddenness of this discovery that surprised me: I realized that I simply had not noticed this “flaw.” Probably, support for five fingers (by the way, this is exactly what is stated on the manufacturer’s website) and more for smartphones is somewhat overrated.

Interface and control

The Lenovo A706 has the Android 4.1.2 operating system installed without surprises, but with a proprietary shell. A similar one, but expanded in capabilities, could be seen, for example, in the Lenovo S920. Only there the shell contains all sorts of “goodies”, such as increasing the sound volume when moving the device into a pocket and other gestures. Here the launcher differs from the standard one mainly in its appearance and its numerous settings. So, you can make non-standard icon designs, wallpapers, animations for changing desktops (cubes, mills and other joys of animation). There is a widget in the form of a four-leaf clover, and grouping by folders. The default notification panel consists of recent actions, access to the full settings menu and three tables of quick access icons (by the way, the screen brightness here is shown not as a bar, but as the same round icon as the others: you click on it, and the screen becomes brighter or dimmer ). One of the most convenient file managers, in which you can not only search for files by location, but also by their type, has not undergone any changes. Standard Android buttons located under the screen are responsible for control. They glow white when touched. I like the presence of a convenient desktop settings menu, called up with the left button. Well, if you hold it down, a menu of all open applications will pop up, from where you can safely unload them, thereby unloading the smartphone’s RAM.

Performance and Heat

Naturally, you can’t expect super speeds from a budget Android smartphone. However, you really want its interface to work smoothly - and here it is. And here we are talking not only about standard, but also animated transitions. I also want to watch movies sometimes. This is also possible. For example, 720p videos played in MP4 without any problems. Things are not so rosy with games. Let's say Real Racing 3 never launched. But Minion Rush or Dead Trigger 2 ran without problems at low graphics settings. Asphalt 7, after loading data for half an hour for the first time, while justifying the word “heat” in the name, noticeably heated the device, or rather, half of it (the one with the camera). I wouldn’t call such heating critical: in the current weather, it rather transfers pleasant warmth to the hands squeezing it. The smartphone gets hot in almost all gaming applications and tests. Not much. In general, the budget quad-core Qualcomm MSM8225Q Snapdragon, made using a 45 mm manufacturing process, copes with most of the tasks assigned to it. Just don't have high expectations from it: not all modern 3D games will work. Not only Real Racing 3 crashed at the start. For example, the cross-platform Ice Storm test, having launched once, never reached the end, and subsequently refused to launch. But AnTuTu, Vellamo and Epic Citadel were able to evaluate the smartphone. Naturally, not too high: for example, the overall performance of the device is only slightly higher than that demonstrated by the flagship Galaxy S2 from last year. And one more feature typical of Lenovo’s budget solutions: not too much internal memory, which is already crammed with the operating system. You can choose an external memory card as the main data storage, but with this approach I had the card “drop out” a couple of times for no apparent reason. However, most games can be transferred from main memory to a flash drive, thereby offloading it.

Camera

The camera here is nothing more than nominal. Although it has five megapixels, a flash and autofocus, this is all nothing more than a formality. It is weak, the picture turns out very blurry. Although, if you try, you can photograph the necessary information and then even understand what was meant. See for yourself.

Sound and autonomy

In short, the sound is not bad (with headphones it’s a decent budget player, there are Dolby Digital Plus settings), but the battery life is average. In general, the device lasts a day without problems, but loads eat up the battery quite quickly.

Bottom line

The Lenovo A706 is suitable for you if you have a limited budget, but at the same time you want a dual-SIM smartphone with a modern version of Android with a good shell. If you don't expect to play the most advanced games, but sometimes you still want to play something while periodically listening to music and watching movies. If you like its design more than that of competitors, for example, Fly IQ4410 Quad Phoenix, comparable to it in most parameters (by the way, most of the current competitors can be found in this article) or Huawei Ascend G610 from the next review. If you like small, convenient and lowly smartphones. Today such a smartphone can be bought for approximately 1,800 hryvnia.

5 reasons to buy Lenovo A706

  • IPS screen;
  • good body assembly, dismountable design;
  • support for two SIM cards;
  • convenient software shell;
  • good price/quality ratio.

3 reasons not to buy Lenovo A706

  • Weak camera;
  • Not all games run: average performance;
  • Not the highest autonomy.

Lenovo A706- Excellent value for money and quality. Lenovo has not been on the mobile device market for very long, however, it can boast a wide range of smartphones at an affordable price. Among all the devices, this model of the quad-core Lenovo A706 phone, made in an original case for a representative of a budget series of devices, with quite impressive parameters and a price of $130, will not go unnoticed. Let's take a closer look at this smartphone.

Equipment

The contents of the Lenovo family of mobile phones are something that, as a rule, does not change from model to model, here we see consistency and in addition to the phone inside the box there is a charger, a 2000 mAh battery, a microUSB cable for connecting to a PC and charging, headphones, and a set of documentation with a warranty card.

Characteristics

Lenovo A706 is equipped with a quad-core Snapdragon MSM8225Q processor with a frequency of 1.2 GHz. The manufacturer installed 1 GB of RAM and 4 GB of internal memory. The phone also supports MicroSD cards up to 32GB, so you can quickly expand the capacity. The battery in the device, with a capacity of 2000 mAh, is enough for about a day of battery life. Of course, if you turn on the energy saving mode and periodically turn off data transmission via Wi-Fi and 3G, the smartphone will work for 2 days. The thickness of the device body is 10.4 mm, which is an acceptable indicator for a budget device. The overall dimensions of the device are 136 x 69 x 10.4 mm.

The phone has 2 slots for SIM cards. One module operates in GSM and WCDMA modes, and the second SIM only in GSM. The device contains GPS, WI-FI and Bluetooth modules. In the Antutu Benchmark 3.3.2 performance test, Lenovo A706 scores 11,000 points, which is not the maximum value for a budget device of this class, but at the same time a fairly good result. The smartphone has a fairly modern Android 4.1 operating system preinstalled as an OS.

Screen and sound

As for the display, it’s not bad at all. We have a good IPS matrix with a resolution of 480 x 854. The viewing angles of the screen are quite good, of course there is some inversion, but this is not at all critical for games and practically does not cause any inconvenience in work. And then, don’t forget that this is not a top-end device. The sound in the phone supports the Dolby Dgital Plus high-quality sound system.

Camera

As for the cameras, they don't shine with anything special here. The main module has a 5 megapixel matrix and flash. It’s quite suitable for everyday photos of cats, but nothing more. The front one has a 0.3 megapixel sensor and copes well with the task at hand - video calls.

Video from camera

Appearance

The appearance of the smartphone is quite unusual, as for a budget device from the Lenovo family. On the back panel, elements of the designers' creativity appear in the form of a silver insert on the top of the cover, which gives the phone its own style and will be difficult to confuse with another device in the lineup. The phone is available in two colors - white and pink, which primarily positions it as a women's smartphone. On the front of the device there is a Lenovo logo, a speaker grille, a 4.5-inch screen with an IPS matrix, a 0.3 MP camera, three touch navigation buttons, proximity and light sensors, and a microphone.

The rear part houses a 5 MP camera with flash, a speaker grille and the inscriptions: Lenovo and Dolby Dgital Plus.

On the top of the case are: a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a power button. The volume rocker is located on the left side. On the right side there is a connector for microUSB. There is a special gap on the bottom edge for easy removal of the back cover.

Results

pros:

  • high quality sound
  • support for 2 SIM cards

minuses:

  • mediocre camera

Overall, the phone turned out to be interesting and quite stylish. For its price, this is an excellent option, and given the quality of the sound and screen, it still needs to work hard to find competitors.

Devices produced by Lenovo have received recognition from users more than once. One of these smartphones is the budget A706.

Design

Quite often, the company introduces small design highlights into its devices. The device also did not go without some correction of its boring appearance.

The front side has not been changed; it is difficult to distinguish it from the rest of the phones, but the back panel has a glossy insert. This decision significantly diluted the boring appearance of the “A” series.

Apart from the insertion, there are no special changes in the device. The body is made entirely of plastic, and not particularly high quality. The phone creaks when squeezed, which suggests that the build quality is a bit let down.

The arrangement of buttons and parts will not surprise a person who has already encountered Lenovo devices. The display is adjacent to the camera, speaker, sensors, and control buttons.

On the back side there is the main camera, naturally with a flash, and the company logo. In addition, there is a speaker at the bottom. Apart from the insertion, there are no special changes observed here.

The left side has a cable connection socket, and the right side has a volume control. On top there is a power button, as well as an input with a 3.5 jack for headphones.

The device is produced in several colors: black, white, and pink.

Screen

The device is equipped with a 4.5-inch diagonal with an IPS matrix. This is quite enough for the Lenovo A706, but the quality of the display itself leaves much to be desired. It seems that the screen is not small for 2013; it has a resolution of only 854 x 480 pixels. Accordingly, pixels are noticeable during operation, and this spoils the impression of the device.

The screen doesn't behave well in the sun either. Even at the highest brightness, the display fades. A good viewing angle slightly improves the impression, but overall the screen leaves much to be desired.

Filling

The MTK processor usually used in Chinese devices was replaced by Qualcomm. It’s hard to say whether it’s better or worse for the Lenovo A706. Each processor has its own advantages.

The performance of the smartphone is quite good for a budget processor frequency of 1.2 GHz. This allows it to compete with newer inexpensive devices.

In principle, all the filling of the device corresponds to modern state employees. There is a whole gigabyte of RAM, and this is an excellent indicator for a smartphone produced in 2013.

But the internal memory fails slightly. Only 4 gigabytes are installed, taking into account the costs of the system, there will be about 3 GB available for use. Of the remaining, only 1 GB is allocated for applications, and 2 for other needs. Such a solution will significantly reduce the ability to install large games and the number of programs.

The disadvantage is slightly mitigated by the possibility of installing a flash card of as much as 32 GB. Having such an amount of memory, the user can be sure of the absence of slowdowns and problems in operation.

Battery

The operating time of 16 hours declared by the company is somewhat exaggerated for the Lenovo A706. The battery capacity is as follows: only 2000 maH. Considering the screen and all the hardware inside the device, you can count on about 5-6 hours of operation without additional charging. And in standby mode, with minimal use, the phone can work for a day.

In general, the battery meets all the needs of the phone, but if desired, you can replace it with a larger analogue.

System

As always, Android devices from Lenovo use a proprietary shell. The device operates in version 4.1.2, which is quite good for a smartphone of previous years.

Most advanced and modern programs may not start, but there will be plenty to choose from to suit every taste. If there is an urgent need, it is possible to update the system to a new one, although the choice of firmware will come down to different assemblies.

Connection

The main advantage of the phone is that it works with multiple SIM cards. Of course, it’s difficult to surprise someone with such a feature, but the A706 has two radio modules installed.

It is the communication modules that allow two SIM cards to work simultaneously. For example, the user will be able to receive calls and use the Internet overnight.

This pleasant advantage is also reinforced by working with all the useful communication functions. The device's quick connection to GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth make the smartphone stand out from the crowd.

Sound

The device has good sound due to the use of Dolby Digital with the Plus prefix. The quality is really better both in headphones and from speakers.

Naturally, when comparing the sound of the A706 and recognized music leaders, the “Chinese” loses. But for a budget Android it’s quite acceptable.

Performance

The hardware present may seem rather mediocre, but the phone produces good results. There is no lack of RAM or processing speed. The device runs medium-demand games and applications quickly and without problems.

Camera

When shooting with a Lenovo A706, the photos will turn out to be pretty decent, because the resolution of 2592 x 1944 is not bad for a budget employee. It’s even a little surprising that a camera with 5 megapixels has such quality.

Of course, there are some drawbacks: the noise-reducing filter deprives the image of fine details.

The device also has a front-facing camera, but it is not capable of causing much excitement. The simplest camera for video communication without any frills.

Equipment

The delivery set is standard. In the box, the buyer will see, in fact, the Lenovo A706 itself. Instructions, headphones, AC adapter, USB cable and warranty card are included.

Advantages

Among all the advantages of the device, I would like to highlight the presence of a radio module that allows you to work with several cards.

It should also be noted that there is good hardware for a budget device. In total, these advantages make the A706 an excellent smartphone for work.

In passing, we can also note the interesting design, which makes the smartphone stand out a little from the general background. In fact, all the advantages end there.

Flaws

The phone has about the same number of disadvantages. This includes a display with poor resolution for such a diagonal and a battery of average power.

The camera's shortcomings and the small amount of built-in memory will be more minor.

A noticeable disadvantage is the poor assembly of the device. The creaking and plastic of the case can scare off the buyer and persuade them to choose a phone that is more reliable in quality.
