*****************************************Hello dear friends****** ***********************

In my next review, I would like to talk about the LG G Pad 8.3 tablet. I have heard very little about Lg tablets. I didn’t hear what I was saying at all, but when I was choosing a tablet for myself, this particular tablet literally looked at me and I thought:

"Yes, he will be mine."

At first, for some reason, I thought it was a smartphone, well, for the same reason I had never heard of LG tablets, but no, it turned out to be a tablet.

The name of the tablet contains the numbers 8.3 which indicate the screen diagonal. As you can see, it's a little unconventional, but it doesn't feel much different from 7-inch devices.

The equipment is very simple, there is nothing special about it. In the box I had: instructions, USB cable, charger and nothing else. (at least put some headphones in).

I bought it for 13,000 rubles. Everyone will say a lot or a little in their own way, but my opinion will say “Normal”.

What I don’t like is that there is no 3G, so you have to use it without a SIM card.

I have no complaints about the screen; the screen is very bright and juicy. The brightness can be adjusted very simply and as you need. There is also auto brightness.

This model weighs 330 grams. Such a normal weight, I can’t say that it’s too much or too little.

Charging is not bad in the “Don’t touch anything” mode, it will last 1.5 weeks without charging. And if you watch a video via YouTube, of course, via Wi-Fi, then 5 hours is enough.

***********************************************************************************************************************

Characteristics of hardware, so to speak. Let me start by saying that I have no special complaints about them.

The processor is installed 4 core;

RAM is excellent at 2 gigabytes. Games run smoothly, without problems. In principle, as they should be with 2 gigabyte RAM.

The tablet's memory is excellent - 16 gigabytes is enough for me personally. And for those who can’t get enough, buy memory cards. The tablet supports up to 64 gigabytes.

Another nice feature of the tablet would be the navigator, which works great and has excellent accuracy.

The design of the tablet just makes me happy. I would give 6 points if possible.

There is a front camera for video calls and a light sensor.

I can tell by the sound. Wow! why, if you watch a movie at full volume, you can hear it throughout the entire apartment.. And if you still watch a movie and then forget to turn down the volume, you can then get scared by the sharp sound. Generally the loudest I've ever heard from a tablet.

The disadvantages I would say is that it is very easily soiled, there are noticeable prints left which, by the way, are not so easy to wipe off. I would also consider it a disadvantage that there is only a front camera; I would prefer a camera on the side of the lid.

The tablet menu is beautiful, there doesn’t seem to be anything superfluous, unless, of course, you pump all sorts of nonsense into it.

It happens that when working for a long time, the tablet begins to freeze and the battery gets hot, so you need to give it a rest periodically.

Fast enough quad core The processor operates at a frequency of 1.7 GHz (Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 APQ8064T). The amount of RAM is 2048 MB. The graphics core is also developed by Qualcomm.

The operating system is Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, but not “naked”, but with some delicious seasonings from LG. For example, you can keep several active application windows on the screen at once, or unlock the device by double-clicking on the screen, or limit the access rights of different users... Among the pre-installed applications there is a translator, a video editor, an application for interacting with the user’s smartphone QPair (for example, you can write SMS messages from the tablet, and they will be sent from the user’s phone). Beauty!

Samsung and LG are the only companies at the moment that are actively promoting Android to the status of a full-fledged operating system.

The G Pad 8.3 is fast enough for any task, including games. Among those we have tested we can name Angry Birds: Star Wars 2, FIFA 14, Sonic Dash, Shadowgun: Dead Zone, Need for Drift, Real Racing 3 And N.O.V.A. 3. All this magnificence worked without brakes, loading between levels or locations was carried out in a matter of seconds.

Our enthusiastic readers probably remember LG's attempt almost two years ago to enter the Android tablet market with the LG Optimus Pad model, which ultimately culminated in a press release stating that the company was leaving this market. We also remember that the 3D camera and the price of $1,500 did not help the device become popular and appear on sale en masse, despite the fact that the editor gg The tablet itself made a good impression. Since LG’s “exit” from the tablet market, this very market has grown noticeably, and it has become even more difficult for a new player to attract the attention of the spoiled public. But there are no children sitting in LG either. On the second (or third, after all, there were modifications of the Optimus Pad with LTE) of its G Pad 8.3 tablet, the company decided not to repeat mistakes, avoided questionable technologies, but “packed” the model conscientiously. FullHD display, metal case, almost top-end processor, Android 4.2, all the latest developments of the company in the interface area, which are becoming more and more interesting. The company approached the issue of pricing in the same way as in the case of its flagship smartphone LG G2, that is, it made it so low that it’s hard to believe - about 3,000 UAH at the start of sales. Thus, right before the eyes of an astonished public, the LG G Pad 8.3 turned from just an interesting device into one of the most attractive Android tablets today with the best performance to boot. For those for whom Nexus 7 is not enough to be happy, but Sony Xperia Tablet Z is too much and expensive.

Specifications

It just so happens that in the large and unfriendly family of Android devices, the title of the first device in everything is quickly lost. So, until recently, the top processor in tablets was the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro; it is equipped with the Nexus 7 (2013) and Sony Xperia Tablet Z. But LG outdid them with its Qualcomm Snapdragon 600. Therefore, the audience for whom it is important to have the most sophisticated tablet ( and at the same time, for some subjective reasons, it should not be an iPad), has a new favorite. If you do not consider yourself among the tech-conscious segment of the population, then it is enough for you to know that the modern powerful LG G Pad processor, together with 2 GB of RAM, can provide the tablet with sufficient performance to serve the needs of its luxurious FullHD display, all modern games, and watching videos in excellent quality and load the device memory with a large number of applications. And if you are not a technomaniac, then it is unlikely that you will need to update your device faster than in one and a half to two years to the current version. The 8.3-inch screen diagonal has no analogues on the market yet, and the aspect ratio with such a diagonal is optimal for watching movies. While most devices on the market are equipped with displays with an aspect ratio of 4:3, like the iPad. The exception is 7 and 10.1-inch models (for example, the Nexus family of tablets, a number of Samsung and Asus models). We'll talk further about how convenient the proportions proposed by LG for a device with a diagonal of 8 inches are.

Equipment

LG, starting with the Optimus G smartphone model, decided to equip its devices with only the necessary minimum - that is, charging and documents. The tradition continues with the LG G Pad.

Frame

The metal case of the iPad prevented many people from sleeping well. For example, the Asus company, whose portfolio includes tablets with reliable metal armor. A number of Chinese factories with their iPad-like monsters. So LG, as it turned out, also craved metal glory. The LG G Pad is housed in a slim, polished aluminum body that's easy on the eyes and hands. As it turns out, this excellent coating can also be scratched if you carry the tablet in a bag without a case. Fortunately, the scratches will be almost invisible.

But what is noticeable very well are fingerprints. Therefore, you will definitely need to buy, if not a case for the tablet, then definitely a cloth for wiping off dust. But even with scratches and fingerprints, the LG G Pad looks very attractive and expensive.

About the form factor. In my opinion, the most desirable aspect ratio for a tablet is 4:3 - as Apple originally intended. This makes it much more convenient to browse the web both on a large 9.7-inch device and on a mini version. And if there may still be options with a 10-inch diagonal, because the user is initially configured for a large device, then in the segment of small tablets the 8-inch option is definitely more convenient. I repeatedly found that the top of the LG G Pad's screen (if I held the tablet vertically) was not in my field of view. And besides, it seriously outweighs. Yes, watching movies on it is more convenient than on any iPad clone. But I spend most of my time with a tablet, for example, surfing the web (or playing with toys). Of course, different people have their own use cases, so there’s no real reason not to buy an unusual tablet form factor. But if the G Pad were made more “square”, it would only benefit from this.

That's how long it is

The borders around the screen are thin. The front panel contains only the logo, camera eye and light sensor.

Android touch control keys – as I like, in the center.

Not the best place was chosen for the stereo speakers, but, unfortunately, it is very traditional for tablets - on the back of the case.

The camera is in the upper left corner of the back of the case. While shooting, fingers occasionally enter the frame.

I liked the placement of the volume and screen lock keys. They are located on one of the long ends, under each other. The movement is a little tight, but this is good, as it allows you to avoid unnecessary clicks. The infrared port (the tablet can be used as a remote control), a memory card slot under a flap (both more aesthetically pleasing and practical), and a headphone jack are located on the upper end of the tablet. Below there is only microUSB for charging and connecting to a computer. And the second long end is empty.

Comparing sizes: LG G Pad 9 (8.3 inches) between the iPad Air (9.7", we have a review of it) and the Fidget Pad 8" tablet (7.85", its review is being prepared).

Screen

The LG G Pad is equipped with an IPS display with FullHD resolution with an atypical 8.3-inch diagonal, which LG, as a display manufacturer, can easily afford. High resolution gives an excellent pixel density by tablet standards - 273 ppi. Since for a touch device the display is one of the most important parts. Therefore, my acquaintance with the G Pad began with a colorimeter. The measurement results, to my disappointment, are very “average”. This applies to the brightness of the white field (274.36 cd/m2), color temperature, and color rendition. The reference screen at the moment is the Nexus 7, and the LG G Pad is far from it. The tablet will not be so good outdoors in the summer. Although at other times and in other places there should be no problems with brightness.

Device nameWhite field brightness,
cd/m2
The brightness of the black field,

Contrast
LG G Pad 8.3 274.73 0.36 763:1
Globex GU7814 320.73 0.38 <844:1
iPad Air 364.83 0.59 618:1
PocketBook SurfPad 2 379.22 0.6 632:1
Nexus 7 (2013) 443.42 0.59 752:1
Nexus 7 (2012) 155.06> 0.34 456:1

But the sensitivity of the screen is simply excellent. This is especially noticeable after using any “Chinese”.

Performance and autonomy

It is not surprising that with top-end equipment for a tablet (Snapdragon 600, 2 GB of RAM), the device produces the best results in performance tests (above Nexus 7 and Sony Xperia Tablet Z, although not by much). What’s more surprising is that from the flagship LG G2 smartphone on the even more powerful Snapdragon 800 I was able to get slight stutters in games, but the tablet stoically withstood all the tests with games, movies, and my typical use case in the spirit of “I don’t know what I want.” do, open, install, but I need all this quickly and at the same time.” And only Masha Chip, holding the new iPad Air in one hand and the G Pad in the other, said that the latter is noticeably inferior to the first in both smoothness of operation and reaction speed.

The tablet's battery capacity is 4600 mAh. It scored 529 points in the AnTuTu test. In test mode, the tablet lost 81% of its charge in 3 hours. In my life, I usually charged it once every two to three days, during which time I used it for gaming on the way to and from work (2 hours), at home I used it as a bedside device for checking email, reading the news and about 30 more minutes of games or episodes of a TV series.

Interface

Manufacturers of Android devices install a lot of different software on their gadgets, and LG is no exception. The G Pad tablet is the second device in the manufacturer's lineup that runs Android 4.2 out of the box. The first was the LG G2 smartphone. On top of the operating system, LG uses a proprietary shell, which differs from competitors primarily in the incredible number of settings for all sorts of visual “goodies” (children’s themes, the ability to change application icons, many transition effects), which I never understood. Although, purely visually, I like LG’s proprietary interface. On a tablet, in landscape orientation, it looks just as organic as on a smartphone. The tablet interface supports double tap unlocking. It doesn’t always work on the first try, but on a tablet with its large size it’s even more convenient than on a smartphone. For a more detailed overview of the interface, you can dive into the review of LG Optimus G Pro and LG G2. Below I will focus on just a few updates.

Firstly, a comfortable keyboard. There are no letters “Y” and “X” hidden in the far corner, which never had enough space even on 5.5-inch displays.

Secondly, the Qpair function appeared. Its relevance will depend entirely on your habits. For example, I like to forget my smartphone in the far corner of the room and miss some calls and messages, focusing only on the tablet. Qpair allows you to connect two Android devices to each other and exchange the latest events between them. So, the incoming call and message will be displayed on the tablet screen too. With sound, so there will be such a cacophony in the room that not a single call will be missed. Secondly, the text of incoming messages will be displayed on the tablet screen in a pop-up window. This means that you don’t have to run to the other end of the room, apartment, or land to get an SMS. Also, the latest open applications of the second device will be available on each device - the corresponding icon appears in the lower left corner of the screen. And another useful feature is the ability to quickly and easily set up Internet distribution from a smartphone to a tablet. The application is available for download on Google Play for smartphones of any manufacturer. But I was unable to connect two non-LG devices with each other. The application settings look like this:

Slide Aside - you can collapse and expand the application by sliding it to the side with three fingers. I used this function just once solely for testing. But the habit of using the task manager to switch between applications seems more useful and convenient to me.

Since the tablet has an infrared port, it can also be used as a remote control. The corresponding application can be found in the list of preinstalled ones. There are also two dictionaries for travelers and a video editor. However, the tablet’s camera is hardly capable of taking high-quality memorable photographs or recording excellent videos. Therefore, the editor will come in handy if you download pictures and videos for a memorable video to the tablet from another source.

Camera

The main camera in the tablet has a resolution of 5 megapixels and is equipped with back-light technology. There is autofocus, but no flash. Indoors, the pictures are of very questionable quality, while outdoors you can achieve the same results as from a smartphone with a 5 MP camera. True, on cloudy days the photographs will traditionally be soapy. The camera has several shooting modes, including HDR and two types of panoramas.

An example of a video shot with the camera of an LG G Pad 8.3 tablet.

Competitors

The direct competitor of the LG G Pad 8.3 in terms of form factor and price is the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0. However, the Samsung tablet is inferior in almost everything: display resolution, processor, amount of RAM. Although the latter certainly does not affect the speed of operation, since Samsung, with its HD display, has more modest needs. Another potential LG G Pad is the Nexus 7. The first device is worth choosing if you need a larger diagonal, the second if the speed of updating the operating system version and belonging to the geeky Nexus family are more important.

Video review of LG G Pad

Bottom line

The LG G Pad 8.3 is without a doubt one of the most interesting Android tablets on the market today, along with the Nexus 7 (2013), Sony Xperia Tablet Z and Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0. At the same affordable price as the Nexus family, the tablet has top-end (for an Android tablet) performance, a chic body and a FullHD display with excellent sensitivity. At the same time, with enviable regularity, LG leaves some minor flaws in its flagship devices (G2 and Nexus 5 in particular). So, in G Pad 8.3 this “flea” is the low brightness of the display backlight (however, there is hope that a “brighter” version will reach the shelves), with which in the summer you will have to look for a dark corner. But if the competition in the smartphone market is too great, and such missteps can become a good reason for choosing a model from another manufacturer, then the segment of top-end Android tablets is not so crowded yet. If for whatever reason you don’t want to buy an Apple tablet (religion doesn’t allow it or you just prefer Android as an OS), and the Nexus 7 is too small, then I recommend taking a closer look at the LG G Pad 8.3. Moreover, for all its advantages, the tablet receives the “Editor's Choice” award from us.

4 reasons to buy LG G Pad 8.3:

  • FullHD display with a larger diagonal than the Nexus 7;
  • top performance (at the time of release);
  • chic metal body;
  • very attractive price for a top brand tablet;

2 reasons not to buy LG G Pad 8.3:

  • do you need a larger or smaller tablet?
  • where you usually live, there are an order of magnitude more clear sunny days than dull and cloudy ones, and you plan to spend them all outside, under a palm tree, with a tablet in your hands (in this case, the doctor prescribes a brand new iPad or Nexus 7).

Equipment

The package contents of the device can be called standard - a microUSB cable, a charger unit and a user manual with a guarantee.

Design

At first glance, the design of the LG G Pad 8.3 is typical of most modern tablets. Outwardly, it is similar - the same rounded corners, and the diagonal of the display is essentially the same. Although if you look closely, you notice that the contours are not smooth, but slightly convex, which gives it its characteristic feature. Yes, and it looks more like an enlarged one. Having examined the LG G Pad 8.3 in detail, the feeling of similarity with any other tablet disappears.

What pleased us with the device was the surprisingly thin frame around the display, almost like the thickness of the device (8.3 mm), which naturally affected the weight (338 g).

The front camera is located on the left above the display. There is also a light sensor there.

On the left side there is a double volume key and a power/lock button.

The back side stands out from a number of other tablets with its design and incredibly pleasant tactile sensations.

The faceted parts of the matte plastic case “peek out” at the top and bottom, and a polished aluminum lid is installed in the center. The camera is located on the top of the body, and the speakers are located on the left.

On the top and bottom edges there is a headset jack, a memory card slot, an infrared port and a microUSB connector with a microphone, respectively.

Display

LG also decided to stand out in size by making the tablet have a non-standard 8.3-inch display made using IPS technology. The screen has a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels with a density of 273 ppi and an aspect ratio of 16:10. The dots can only be seen by burying your nose in the screen, but at a distance of 20 cm they are not visible at all. Also for protection, it is made with Corning Gorilla Glass protection and an oleophobic coating that makes it easy to erase any fingerprints.

Over the past year, almost all the top-end smartphones of this company have been very, very pleasing with good displays. The same trend will hopefully continue among LG tablets. In this case, the device confirmed all expectations. Let's start with the fact that the brightness was enough for us even to work in direct sunlight.

The display remains clean, without obvious dirt, thanks to the oleophobic coating. Naturally, fingerprints are visible, but they are very easily erased, and the image remains visible, clear and bright, unlike devices.

Viewing angles are maximum, and color rendition causes unreasonable bursts of joy and fun. And this is without sarcasm. Indeed, the colors are very rich, bright, colorful and natural. Viewing images of nature and still life on such a display is uplifting.

The black color is rich, but it still stands out against the background of the frame. Especially when the viewing angle deviates, it “fades” and becomes blue-violet.”

Ergonomics

LG G Pad 8.3 is well built. It looks solid, and creaks are only noticeable under strong pressure. The display and back panel flex only slightly. The tablet fits very comfortably in your hand and can be grasped with one hand.

The on-screen keyboard is accurate and comfortable in both positions.

The sound also leaves a good impression. Many laptops would envy this sound - very clear, balanced and quite loud.

Performance

Fast and smooth operation of the device is ensured by the quad-core Krait 300 processor on the Qualcomm APQ8064 Pro Snapdragon 600 chip with a clock frequency of 1.5 GHz.

The processor is supported by a GPU Adreno 320 graphics adapter and 2 GB of RAM. You can store your data on 16 GB of built-in space, but if it seems small, you can expand it using a memory card with a capacity of up to 64 GB.

We did not notice any slowdowns or glitches. The system works smoothly, quickly and smoothly, any applications launch almost at lightning speed, and Full HD playback and gaming happen with a bang!

Interface and software

The device runs on the Google Android 4.2.2 operating system with a proprietary shell from LG similar to that used in . All features are borrowed from the G2, and for those who are new to LG devices, there is a small visual reference at the end of the desktops.

The tablet, like the flagship, can be unlocked and “put to sleep” by double tapping on the screen. Directly from the lock screen you can go to the desired program.

The developers have improved the work with desktop shortcuts. Not only can you move shortcuts, but you can also use them to learn more about applications or delete them. In addition, if you hold the icon and immediately release it, a purple brush will appear, thanks to which you can change the appearance of the shortcut or double its size.

Creation of guest accounts is supported, for example, for children.

Also worth highlighting is multitasking thanks to the Slide Aside function and the ability to work with several applications simultaneously using QSlide. In the first case, you need to swipe the application from right to left with three fingers in order to make it background. This way you can work with three applications. To return to full screen mode, swipe three fingers from left to right. However, the classic application switching menu has not gone away.

Thanks to the QPair application, you can synchronize your smartphone and tablet to receive messages and incoming calls on your tablet.

Among the useful and interesting applications, it is worth highlighting “Video Editor”, Life Square, which saves events from your life, posts, photos and videos from social networks, QRemote, which turns the tablet into a remote control, V3 Mobile 2.0, used to protect data, “Dictionary” , QTranslator, Box, as well as LG Support and Smart World.

Camera

The tablet has two cameras - one for video communication, the second for capturing the brightest moments of your life. Their resolution is 1, 3 megapixels and 5 megapixels, respectively. The main camera is characterized by normal photo quality, noticeable blurring at long distances and slight overexposure of well-lit objects or the sky.

The tablet copes well with macro photography.

Available modes include Normal, HDR, Panorama, VR Panorama, Continuous Shot, Face Beauty, Time Machine Shot, Sports and Night.

Manually you can set the ISO value, white balance and choose a classic color effect if desired.

Communications

The “tablet” supports dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0, and a 3.5 mm jack and a microUSB connector are used as wired interfaces.

Working hours

The device has a 4600 mAh lithium polymer battery, thanks to which the operating time at maximum load is up to 5 hours. In reading mode, the device will “live” for 8 hours. With more moderate use, it will last about two days.

Impression

The LG G Pad 8.3 is superior to most popular tablets today in many ways. In addition to a very interesting design and pleasant tactile sensations from use, the user can expect high performance and a clear, beautiful picture.
