In my review I will talk about the Samsung Galaxy J1 SM-J120F Smartphone. I chose black. I chose this model because it is relatively not bulky; the dimensions of the smartphone are 7 cm * 13 cm * 0.9 cm. However, even with my long fingers, it is not very convenient to operate it with one hand. The screen is 4.5 inches, its length is slightly less than 10 centimeters. Color AMOLED screen, 16.78 million colors. Such screens consume less energy than screens from other manufacturers. It’s very comfortable to watch movies in transport on this one. Indoors, thanks to the loud speaker, headphones are not needed to watch movies or listen to music. This model is lightweight, only 131 grams. The kit includes only a phone and a 220 V charger. There is no USB cable or memory card. The battery capacity is 2050 mAh. It charges quite quickly both from a 220 V network and via USB from a computer. When connected via USB, it is defined as a portable player. There is access to both the card and folders on the phone. There is a slot for two SIM cards, a slot for a memory card is located next to the battery, which allows you to change the card without removing the battery. In my opinion, the power button is too sensitive, but the power confirmation can be supplemented with a password or a picture. The internal memory is not very much - 8 GB, and even less is available from it, only 4.1 GB. An additional card supports up to 128 GB. Some applications can be partially transferred to a memory card, photos can also be saved to a memory card. RAM is only 1 GB. For games I tried to install Need for Speed No Limits, the game worked, but I haven’t tried installing GTA yet. The flashlight is built-in and does not require an additional application. The camera does not have a shutter mute mode, which is a significant disadvantage for me. I was pleased that the camera has several shooting modes and in the professional mode you can change light sensitivity, ISO, exposure value and white balance. In my opinion, a very good flash, it illuminates the entire room 6.5 meters long and 2.5 meters wide. In my opinion, the power button is too sensitive, but the power confirmation can be supplemented with a password or a picture. It is convenient to access the Internet from it: you can create bookmarks and up to 16 tabs. It works quite quickly on the Internet, the video does not slow down. It is easy to choose a protective film, protective glass or all kinds of covers for it, from the simplest to shockproof. However, you need to make sure that the case is for this particular model, and not for a similar model Samsung Galaxy J1 SM-J100F, which has a front camera and a headphone jack on the other side. I am very pleased with my choice and recommend this model to everyone.

Positioning

Samsung took a long time to become a leader in the mobile phone market, and the basis of the company's success were budget devices, phones that had an excellent price/quality ratio, reliable build and adequate characteristics. It was these products that created fame for the Samsung brand, and it owes its further success to them. It is all the more surprising to see how the company abandons its roots over and over again, releasing budget devices with the cost of a small aircraft. The calculation is based solely on the fact that the brand is quite popular, the consumer is inexperienced and will give his last pants to own a Samsung phone. This is some kind of magical world in which reality is not present in any form, and budget phones from Samsung increasingly become synonymous with inefficiency, high prices and an excellent comparison for Chinese smartphones, which, compared to the devices of the Korean company, earn a lot of extra points in the eyes buyers.

In theory, the J series should have become affordable and widespread. In practice, the first J1 model is inferior in consumer efficiency even to Microsoft's Lumia, which means it's inefficient squared. To create something worse in terms of consumer characteristics than what Microsoft is doing, you need to make not just hellish efforts, but perform a feat of inhuman proportions. Remember the conversation with the blacksmith in the film about Count Cagliostro? Here is an excerpt from the film “Formula of Love”:

The guests' carriage broke down. How long will it take you to do it?
- I can handle it in a day.
- How about five?
- If you try, you can do it in five.
- How about ten?
- Well... You can’t do it alone in ten days, you need an assistant.

I have a feeling that the budget J series was created not by one assistant, but by a whole army of them. Since to imagine that such a device was created by one person means to doubt his perception of the market and the world around him. They sell us stale goods in a beautiful wrapper, which costs several times less than the price they ask for it. That rare case when a device from a large company can act as an ideal standard of what not to do in terms of price. Let's see together why I have a complaint about the cost and I cannot recommend this device for purchase under any circumstances.

Although, given that the model is presented in different versions, it is necessary to distinguish between them. For example, the option with LTE on board, namely the SM-J100F, has one SIM card, but a different platform and is much faster than the cheapest device. Outwardly, these are absolutely identical phones, they are called the same in retail, so carefully read what you are buying. The difference can be staggering.

Design, dimensions, control elements

Externally, this is a classic Samsung device, solidly built, with a border around the screen that makes it a little more interesting. The aesthetics are the same as other devices - typical Samsung, nothing budget in appearance. There are three color options - white with a pearlescent tint, black and blue.

The quality of the plastic is beyond praise, it is excellent, and this distinguishes the model from many budget devices. On the left side there is a paired volume rocker (also unusual), on the right side there is an on/off button. On the bottom end you can see a microUSB connector, on the top - 3.5 mm for a headset.

We open the back cover, inside there is a battery and two slots for microSIM cards (in models with one card, there is no second slot, instead there is a plug), as well as a slot for microSD.

I like how the device fits in my hand, it’s not bad (129x68.2x8.9 mm, weight 122 grams). And it hides easily in clothing pockets. Below the screen there is a mechanical key, as well as two touch ones. From the point of view of assembly and appearance, the device has no complaints. Everything is typical for a budget model, the quality is above average.

Display

The screen has a diagonal of 4.3 inches, resolution - 480x800 pixels. For a budget device, the quality of the TFT matrix is excellent; it is bright and clearly visible in different conditions, including on the street. A serious disadvantage and a penny saving is the absence of a light indicator, adjustment only manually for screen brightness, which makes the device ultra-budgetary; few people save on this component.

Traditionally, there is a choice of different fonts, their styles and sizes. The model is nice in terms of these features, but this is a standard option for all similar devices from the company.

Battery

The Li-Ion 1850 mAh battery provides, according to the manufacturer, up to 9 hours of Internet browsing (3G or Wi-Fi), up to 10 hours of talking, and up to 40 hours of music playback. In real conditions, the device works for a day under a very heavy load; ordinary consumers will get about two full days. This is a good result, which was made possible thanks to both the screen and the not very rushed processor.

The device has a maximum energy saving mode, it turns off everything except the main functions, and the operating time increases. Considering that the screen is a regular TFT, this does not provide any huge increase in operating time compared to a similar function in the company’s flagships.

The complete charging time for the battery using the included device is 1 hour 45 minutes.

Processor, memory, performance

The device has 512 MB of RAM, which even for a budget device in 2015 looks like an unusually small amount. We usually find this amount of memory in the most inexpensive, budget devices from small manufacturers. The Spreadtrum SC8830 chipset, two cores with a frequency of up to 1.2 GHz, is an ultra-budget and very cheap solution. Result? Not a single synthetic test that has 3D tests can be completed on this device - they simply crash. They say that there are lucky people who can complete Antutu on pristine devices and get about 12 thousand virtual parrots. But dancing with a tambourine, calling spirits and other tricks could not bring our apparatus to such a state. This test does not work, it crashes.

In practice, this means that the interface is slow, jerky and not very pleasing to the eye. This can be seen in very inexpensive models from last year; in modern state-of-the-art models, the interface works noticeably faster.

Memory cards can be installed up to 128 GB, but who will do this in such an inexpensive device? The main thing is that there is 4 GB of internal memory, of which just under 2 GB is available for your needs.

If for the younger versions of this model everything is bad with performance, then the model with the F index offers completely different opportunities. It has 768 MB of RAM, which is not much by today’s standards, but is quite enough for fairly fast work, and this is noticeable to the naked eye when you look at the two devices. All other characteristics are the same, but the Marvell PXA1908 chipset 4 cores up to 1.2 GHz, the Vivante GC7000UL graphics coprocessor, give a completely different impression of the model. And unlike the inexpensive option, the same Antutu ends normally, showing these results.

If the Broadcom versions of this device are perceived as nothing in terms of performance, then the budget Marvell phone already looks normal from the market point of view.

Communication capabilities

The usual and familiar set, there is synchronization with a PC (USB 2.0, KIES), Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, BT 4.0, there is no NFC, but there is support for GPS/Glonass. The positioning speed is low not because of the quality of the antenna, but rather because of the general brakes of the device.

Version F includes NFC and also supports LTE. There are no problems with the implementation of this technology; everything works well.

Camera

The front camera is 2 megapixels, which is noticeably better than most budget devices. Main camera with autofocus, 5 megapixels, HD video recording (30 frames per second). I like the way this camera takes pictures, albeit slowly, but the pictures come out normal for this class of device. There are a couple of unusual features: the device can recognize your raised hand (selfie mode) and take a photo. Or maybe click on the screen to take a photo. But believe me, these innovations are not at all important in the grand scheme of things.

Photo examples

Software features

Inside Android 4.4.4, there can be no update to 5, the chipset does not support it. I would be very surprised if such a miracle suddenly happens. I won’t describe the standard functionality, I’ll just note that there is an FM radio, it works with a headset, and there is a recording from the air. Notes, calculator, voice recorder - everything is traditional for Samsung, you can see the screenshots below.

Impression

The call quality is normal, although there is only one microphone, so in noisy conditions the interlocutor will hear you poorly. The vibration alert is average, the normal call is above average, and is clearly distinguishable.

To understand how bad things are with the J1, you can look at my eternal standard of badness - Microsoft's Lumia. For 10,000 rubles, you can buy such a new product as the Lumia 640: a 5-inch screen with HD resolution, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of internal memory, Qualcomm Snapdragon 400. The feeling is that these are devices of different classes, which, in fact, this is true. The price of the new product from Microsoft is 10,000 rubles. A curtain.

But the funny thing is that the market is full of Android devices that beat the J1 in all respects. Let's look at the operator market, it could be a Megafon Login+ phablet (5.5 inches, 960x540 pixels, faster processor, more memory, and so on). Price 3,990 rubles plus about a thousand rubles on account.

Want some more laughs? Roughly comparable and slightly worse in terms of characteristics, the ZTE V815 costs 2,990 rubles from MegaFon, of which another 500 are returned to your account. That is, for the cost of this device you can buy a quarter of J1 or a third, as you like. For 10,000 rubles you can buy a normal device of a completely different class.

Or let's take something more expensive, for example, the excellently made Alcatel Idol Mini 2, the price is about 6,000 rubles. Bigger screen, higher resolution, better camera - it's just a product from another universe. It works much faster.

In principle, for 7-10 thousand rubles, you can already look at smartphones with 5-inch screens with HD resolution, a main camera of 8-13 megapixels, good characteristics, and definitely fast. And that's okay.

It's easy to get confused about the different versions of the J1, but they are very different from each other. So, if the cheapest devices cause melancholy, then the SM-J100F with support for LTE and NFC, on a faster, albeit budget chipset, does not look like a complete outsider (in Russia, MTS has an exclusive for this model for some time). This device costs 9,990 rubles (in the review version before the correction, this price was for younger models, which are not in the Russian Federation and apparently will not be). In theory, the cheapest J1s cost around $80-90 depending on the market and are the most inexpensive devices from Samsung. This does not change their shortcomings related to the platform, performance, and so on. The situation is a little better, since in Russia they would cost about 5-6 thousand rubles if they suddenly appeared. Still very expensive, but not as prohibitive as at a cost of 9990 rubles, which is not available for them.

The LTE version of this device doesn't look cheap, but at least it has its own features that can justify its existence. Still expensive, but not so prohibitive, and Chinese devices in this price group usually do not have LTE. Another question is how much do consumers in this segment need it? I don't think it's particularly needed.

I have only one question - why don’t all the reviews that are in Russian (Russian publications did not write, the device is “popular” in Ukraine) call a spade a spade - why these bashful phrases, “has a right to exist”? It has no right in the current market, since the price is unrealistic and differs from the real one at least twice, or even three times. The manufacturer has the right to know that he is positioning his device incorrectly. Likewise, consumers should know for sure that it is not worth throwing money away on it. "Disappointment" isn't quite the right word here, but this budget model proves that any company can release something worse than the Lumia if it wants to. Although it would seem this is impossible. But no, there are craftsmen.

In my review I will talk about the Samsung Galaxy J1 SM-J120F Smartphone. I chose black. I chose this model because it is relatively not bulky; the dimensions of the smartphone are 7 cm * 13 cm * 0.9 cm. I am very pleased with my choice and recommend this model to everyone.

The Samsung Galaxy J1 (2016) fits comfortably in the palm of your hand thanks to its small screen and rounded edges. Its dimensions: 132.6 × 69.3 × 9.3 mm, it is wider than Alcatel PIXI 3 with the same screen diagonal, but thinner. The weight of the model is 131 grams, which is not much, comparable Samsung Galaxy Core Prime or ZTE Blade X5.

Samsung has never been known for its innovative approach to the design of each phone, especially budget ones. If you take a 2014 budget phone, for example, the Samsung Galaxy Core Prime, and compare it with the new 2016 product, you will be able to see by eye what “progress” has taken place in two years - the speaker grille and flash have been swapped, and part of the front panel has been painted in black color. Well, okay, this year, for a change, the side frames were also changed a little to make it look more original.

Below the display there is a hardware Home key and two touch buttons on the edges of it. The side frames are quite thick, the display area to surface ratio of the smartphone is 62.7%. This is not enough, but this is largely due to the small screen diagonal.

Samsung Galaxy J1 (2016) has a removable cover and battery. Below them are two slots for MicroSIM cards and another for a memory card.

The build quality is high for a budget level; the cover can be removed easily, but at the same time fits tightly to the body. True, the material of the back panel is very easily scratched and quickly loses its presentation.

Samsung Galaxy J1 (2016) can be purchased in three colors - black, white and gold. Moreover, the front panel will always be black, regardless of the color of the back.

Screen - 3.3

Samsung Galaxy J1 (2016) has an expensive Super AMOLED matrix, but this alone is not enough to call the screen quality. Yes, the display has wide viewing angles and is very bright, but at the same time it has a low resolution, there is no auto-brightness function, and there are problems with color rendering.

The screen received a budget low resolution (800×480 pixels). Even for a small diagonal of 4.5 inches, this clarity is not enough. The pixel density is 207 per inch - uneven fonts and small details are visible on the display with the naked eye. The screen gets dirty easily and quickly; there is no oleophobic coating, nor any special protective glass. But what’s good about the screen is the viewing angles - everything that happens on it is visible even at the maximum tilt.

The brightness range is excellent - from 4 to 444 cd/m2 (in “Outdoor” mode). On a sunny day, the screen is easy to read, even when working with the camera, all the details are visible on it. At night, the minimum brightness will be comfortable for the eyes. However, there is one more problem - the screen does not have an auto-brightness function; apparently, they saved money on it, although it is found in most state employees. The image contrast is off the charts - another plus. Thanks to the AMOLED matrix, black looks natural, which cannot be said about white and color reproduction in general. In the screen settings, you can select one of four picture modes - “Adaptive”, “Movie AMOLED”, “Photo AMOLED” and “Basic”. In the first three, the color gamut corresponds to the wider Adobe RGB standard, but the colors in it look oversaturated and unnatural (especially in the “Adaptive” mode). If you're not used to such tricks from Samsung in other phones, then at first it will be very noticeable. In the “Basic” mode, the color rendition looks more neutral and correct, but for some reason the white color looks very yellow to the eye, although the colorimeter does not notice this and claims that everything is fine.

Camera

There is nothing unusual in the cameras of the Samsung Galaxy J1 (2016), they use simple, budget modules of 5 and 2 MP. These are usually judged only by the presence of autofocus with flash - it’s there, and that’s already good. The only problem is the competition - for the same money you can buy a smartphone that takes much better pictures.

The main camera has a simple and intuitive interface; the only annoying thing is that you cannot turn off the shutter sound when shooting. There is no HDR mode in the settings, but there are others:

  • "Auto"
  • "Continuous Shooting"
  • "Panorama"
  • "Retouch"
  • "Sport"
  • "Pro" (manual mode)
  • "Sound and Photo".

In the latter, you take a photo and immediately after that record a 9-second audio clip. Original, but why is this necessary? This question remains a mystery to us. In manual mode, you can adjust several parameters:

  • Exposure (−2 to +2)
  • ISO (100 to 400)
  • White balance (automatic or one of four to choose from)
  • Metering mode (center-weighted, matrix or spot).

And that's all, little by little good. The possibilities are not very wide, the same ISO in many inexpensive cameras can be raised two levels higher (up to 1600), and the number of customizable parameters is not at all amazing.

The shooting quality is typical for 5 MP, suitable for photographing the desired text thanks to autofocus or capturing something important, but cannot replace a full-fledged camera. The camera can shoot video in resolutions up to HD (1280×720 pixels) at a speed of 30 frames per second, without tracking autofocus.

The front camera is more useful for video calling than for selfies. Its 2 MP resolution is too small to capture a detailed self-portrait of the owner. Especially if you want to take in some background or landmark with you. It's funny, but it can't even shoot HD video, only VGA (640x480 pixels).

Photos from the camera Samsung Galaxy J1 (2016) - 2.5

Working with text - 4.0

The Samsung Galaxy J1 (2016) uses a proprietary keyboard with the ability to switch to a 3x4 format, with large icons (as was the case in old push-button smartphones). It is quite convenient to work with it, although after phones with large screens it may seem small. In this case, you can adjust the size of the keyboard yourself by increasing its size in the settings. It does not have additional character marking, but it supports continuous input (Swype). You can only enter numbers on the top row of keys. Also, you will not find a separate icon for switching languages; to do this, you will need to press the space bar and drag it to the side.

Internet - 3.0

The phone comes pre-installed with Google Chrome and simply “Internet” browsers. The first one allows text to be adjusted to a pre-selected size and synchronized with the desktop version. The Internet browser does not have any special functions, although on older models it was possible to find text that auto-fits to the width of the screen.

Communications - 2.6

The set of communications of the Samsung Galaxy J1 (2016) can be called typical:

  • Wi-Fi b/g/n with Wi-Fi Direct with the ability to distribute Internet
  • Bluetooth 4.1 with A2DP profile support
  • LTE support
  • A-GPS with GLONASS support
  • FM radio with RDS support (without headphones not enough).

Everything is simple and without frills, except for LTE support, but this is no longer surprising for this price category. The phone has a Micro-USB 2.0 connector for charging and connecting to a PC. It is simple and does not support any technologies for transmitting video or working with peripheral devices.

Multimedia - 3.6

The smartphone showed good results on this point; it supports most video codecs and audio formats. Music in FLAC and AC-3 is not a problem for him. Of the videos, it could not cope only with RMVB and some MPG videos, as well as with high-resolution images (2K and 4K).

The smartphone comes pre-installed with the standard Google Play Music audio player. This is not just a player, but a music service from Google with an equalizer. If you pay for a subscription, you can save your favorite tracks and listen to them offline. To watch videos, there is a proprietary video player with the ability to show subtitles and listen to sound from the video via Bluetooth.

Battery - 3.8

The Samsung Galaxy J1 (2016) lasts a long time by budget standards, and when watching videos, it lasts incredibly long. In daily use, the phone easily lasts for a day and a half.

Formally, the battery capacity is small, 2050 mAh, where does such good battery life come from? The main items of charge consumption are usually the screen and the chipset, but here they are economical: low performance is combined with an energy-efficient type of display with a low resolution. The battery is removable, and this is its advantage; if after a year or two it stops holding a charge, it can easily be replaced with another one.

In HD video viewing mode, the smartphone worked for an unexpectedly long time - 14 hours and 20 minutes. In this parameter, it bypasses such “giants” as Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and long lasting Lenovo P70, and other state employees weren’t even close. But don’t rush to rejoice, because the music player mode puts everything in its place: in it the results were already the usual - 43 hours. This is about the same as Asus Zenfone 2 Laser or the budget Alcatel PIXI 3 4.5. An hour of running the GeekBench Battery Test consumed only 10% of the charge, a good result, but it was achieved only due to low performance. After an hour of playing Minion Rush, the battery lost 19%; at this speed, the phone will only last for 5 hours. Shooting a 10-minute HD video only took 5% of the battery, but it's unlikely you'll be shooting a lot of video on your phone.

Despite the extremely high results in a number of tests, in daily use the smartphone lasts for the same day and a half (like other phones in the budget segment). To save battery, you can switch to the “Extreme Power Saving” mode, in which the phone will protect you from the riot of colors on the screen and smart functions (black and white mode with a limited number of applications).

The Samsung Galaxy J1 (2016) comes with a 0.7A charger, which takes about two and a half hours to fully charge the phone.

Performance - 1.8

The Samsung Galaxy J1 (2016) phone cannot be called fast, but it is enough for basic telephone tasks. The company calls its performance “improved”, it is not clear in comparison with what, apparently, with its predecessor Galaxy J1.

The smartphone is equipped with a proprietary Exynos 3475 processor (4 cores at a frequency of up to 1.3 GHz) and 1 GB of RAM. These are not high figures; the model’s performance in all respects is inferior to its more expensive brother Samsung Galaxy J3. And such RAM is only enough to store only a couple of applications unloaded. It’s funny, but Samsung says that such characteristics “will ensure that the smartphone responds instantly to any of your actions,” which only makes you smile a little.

In daily use, the Samsung Galaxy J1 2016 works fine if you just use it as a phone. But if you work with several tasks at the same time or run heavy games, then it starts to slow down. Even just switching between applications or different lists sometimes causes him to feel slightly thoughtful for a second. Most of the required software starts and generally works fine, with only minor glitches. Mid-level games like Minion Rush are playable, but they don't run perfectly smoothly. In heavier games, for example, Asphalt 8 or NOVA 3, problems begin, such as periodic freezing or drops in the frame rate, which will prevent you from enjoying the games. In addition, there is no place to store large games, because they will quickly fill up the available 4 GB on the phone, unless you save them on a memory card. We tested how hot the Galaxy (J1 2016) gets when playing games. In half an hour in Minon Rush, the case temperature never exceeded 36 degrees - in this regard, the phone is comfortable, although in this case there is simply nothing to overheat.

In various benchmarks, the Samsung Galaxy J1 (2016) was at the bottom of the performance ratings:

  • Geekbench 3 (CPU test) - 1161 points, still inferior to the flagship from four years ago,
  • Ice Storm Unlimited from 3DMark (graphics) - 3662, more than a thousand less than the budget employee ZTE Blade X5
  • AnTuTu (mixed test) - 18253 points, lower than Lenovo A2010.

Memory - 3.5

The volume of permanent memory of the Samsung Galaxy J1 (2016) is 8 GB, of which about 4.1 GB is available to the user. In principle, this is normal for the price of a phone, but in this range there are already devices with 16 GB on board. But here you can always add up to 128 GB using a MicroSD memory card - there is a separate slot under the cover for it. You can store photos and videos on the card, and transfer most major games and applications to it.

Peculiarities

Samsung Galaxy J1 (2016) runs Android 5.1 and proprietary TouchWiz interface. Information about updating your phone to 6th version There is no system, most likely this will not happen. As usual, the smartphone comes pre-installed with an impressive set of various software, so at least the device isn’t crammed full of it. In addition to standard services from Google, you will find a file manager, Internet Security from Kaspersky, the Smart Manager application for optimization, branded stores and more.

The main feature of the Galaxy J1 2016 is the use of an AMOLED display in a budget phone. The image looks unnatural, but it is bright and has wide viewing angles. In addition, we note the collapsible body, removable battery and support for two SIM cards and a memory card.
