As evidenced by reviews from smartphone buyers, high-performance processors, a large amount of memory, and bright screens often do not matter to the consumer if the mobile phone has a weak battery that constantly requires recharging. The leading Chinese manufacturer of mobile devices, Lenovo, takes this problem very seriously, regularly updating its line of smartphone models with high-capacity batteries. Not so long ago, users left rave reviews about a metal one with a 4000 mAh battery, after which we reviewed its newer and already plastic successor with a 3000 mAh battery, which now remains relevant (today you can buy this model at a very tempting price of $145). In the end, Lenovo decided that after all, four are better than three, and metal is better than plastic, and a new model of a long-lasting smartphone with a 4000 mAh battery and in an all-aluminum case saw the market.

Today we invite you to familiarize yourself with a review of a very interesting mobile phone with an excellent margin of safety and autonomy - LenovoS860.

Characteristics

Before listing the technical characteristics of the Lenovo S860, we note that two versions of this mobile phone can be found on sale: for the Chinese and for the European markets. The differences between the Chinese and the European are the absence of our 3G standard in the first, as well as the presence of only one gigabyte of RAM, while its brother has twice the amount of RAM. We received a version for the Chinese market to write a review, please take this into account.

SpecificationsLenovo S860

Just one gigabyte of RAM immediately puts this model into the inexpensive segment, where competition is quite high, and a high-quality battery alone will not be a decisive factor when deciding to buy this particular model. The price of the smartphone will also be important. An option with 1GB of RAM in mid-November 2014 can be purchased for at least 3,000 UAH, which is approximately $190. For Lenovo S860 with 2 GB of RAM they charge more. This smartphone from the official supply can be bought at best for 4300 UAH, which is 80 dollars more. The “gray” models are not much cheaper.

In the first case, the premium for metal and a capacious battery looks more or less justified. In the second, just an increased amount of RAM increases the price inadequately.

So far, the model has only been on sale for a few months, and its price is steep, but we think it won’t last long. Knowing Lenovo, we would venture to assume that another couple of months will pass, and prices for the Lenovo S860 will confidently go down, making room for new, more modern models.

Description

The LenovoS860 is delivered in the usual for the manufacturer nondescript-looking light gray box with red insides, however, it is made with high quality and protects the valuables contained in it quite reliably. Inside the package, in addition to the mobile phone itself, after opening the following is found:

Charger with adapter for European sockets;

USB cable;

Instructions in Chinese;

Cheap black headphones;

Silicone bumper;

Protective film on the screen;

Microfiber;

A paperclip for removing the SIM card slot cover.

The official version for Ukraine most likely contains instructions in a language that is more understandable to us, but, unfortunately, we were not able to verify this.

Lenovo S860 is a metal smartphone, with all the ensuing consequences. He is large, weighty, solid.

If we compare its weight and size parameters with the model we recently reviewed with the same display diagonal, today’s hero of the review is heavier by as much as 34 g and a third thicker. Such characteristics are determined not only by the metal of the case, but also by the battery of considerable capacity, which is hidden under the non-removable back cover of the smartphone.

However, those users who have previously used the Lenovo P780 will hardly find such dimensions and weight a problem. More than once I have come across reviews online that at a good price, it’s time to replace the old one with a brand new Lenovo S860.

Using the LenovoS860 is quite comfortable (if you do it with both hands, of course), the weight of your hands does not bother you, and the brushed metal of the back cover pleasantly cools your hand and gives you a feeling of reliability and confidence in your device.

Unlike many identical models from the manufacturer, the Lenovo S860 even has originality in appearance. The phone looks, as they say, solid. Mostly men will probably appreciate this. But you can admire the exact proportionality of the exterior details and the strict lines of the model.

On the front cover, above the sensor, there is a small speaker grille, to the right of which there is a sensor window, a front camera and an event indicator. Below the screen are the standard Menu, Home and Back buttons, all backlit. The frames around the touchscreen can hardly be called narrow, but their width is not excessive.

At the top end you can find a jack for 3.5" headphones, as well as a microphone hole.

On the right are neat volume and power keys. The keys are pressed with a distinct click, the stroke is short and comfortable.

At the bottom on the sides there are grilles of external speakers, between which a micro-USB connector is nestled.

And on the left there is a small plug that hides a tray for two micro-sim cards. It opens with the included paper clip.

On the back cover, made from a single piece of metal, there is only a window for the main camera and a small flash LED along them. The camera is somewhat recessed inside the body, which protects the lens from scratches, and has a beautiful silver border around the circumference of the module.

Due to its non-separable design and metal body, the Lenovo S860 is made very reliably. The build quality deserves the best reviews; we were unable to find even a small flaw in the assembly.

Screen

The LenovoS860 screen, with a diagonal of 5.3" and a resolution of 1280x720 pixels, is an ordinary solution on a good IPS matrix, with good (but not record) viewing angles and adequate color rendering, if not for one characteristic. The brightness of this display is simply incredible. Unfortunately , it is not possible to carry out hardware measurements in the conditions of our editorial office, but screens with such a reserve of brightness have definitely not come to us yet. By setting the glow of the Lenovo S860 screen to maximum and working like that for a while, you can simply go blind. Fortunately, you can always turn on auto-adjustment brightness, which will set its comfortable value, and save yourself from the danger of losing your eyes forever.

The model's sensor is responsive and works as it should. The touchscreen supports multi-touch for 10 simultaneous touches.

Iron

In this model, the manufacturer decided not to chase high performance and installed an inexpensive quad-core MediaTek MTK6582 processor with an operating frequency of 1.3 GHz. Perhaps its power consumption indicators were also taken into account here, because the Lenovo S860 is positioned as a leader in battery life.

We didn't experience any performance issues in our daily work. The firmware worked as it should, the browser opened several pages at the same time without lag, applications did not irritate with excessive thoughtfulness when loading, and videos from YouTube played smoothly. Interface

The Lenovo S860 is not distinguished by the lightning-fast responsiveness of top models, this is immediately noticeable, but it is quite comfortable for work.

The smartphone has 16 GB of permanent memory, and there is no possibility of expanding it using a flash drive. Perhaps this amount of built-in storage may seem small to some, although reviews from those who have already purchased this model claim that the problem with the lack of space in the Lenovo S860 is overblown. A little more than 12 GB is initially available to the user.

In the Antutu benchmark test, our test subject scored a modest 17156 points.

Other options

The Lenovo S860 has a fairly good and loud sound from the external speaker; it will be difficult to miss a call from this even in a noisy environment. The standard headphones sound predictably inexpressive, although they are also loud, but we didn’t expect anything from them.

The Wi-fi module works very clearly and receives a remote signal from the access point reliably. The GPS navigation module also showed very good results in terms of the speed of finding satellites and positioning on the ground.

Camera

In many models of the S series, Lenovo has a standard formula for a set of cameras: 1.6 megapixels on the front, 8 megapixels on the rear camera. Like the model from the previous review, the main camera of the Lenovo S860 demonstrates very decent image quality for both photos and videos. The camera can confidently shoot in cloudy weather, indoors with little light, and has a good flash brightness reserve.

Focus is set by touching the screen in an arbitrary location; this can also be done while shooting a video.

The camera program interface contains the entire necessary set of settings for manual control of shooting parameters, plus a standard set of decorations and special effects. For the average smartphone user, the photo quality and Full HD video of the Lenovo S860 camera will be quite enough.

Firmware

The LenovoS860 firmware is built on the already reviewed version of Android 4.2.2 with the proprietary Lenovo launcher installed on top. This launcher removes the main program menu that appears when you press the "Home" button, instead providing a whole bunch of small interface tweaks (half of which the user may not notice). You can find many of these tweaks by going to the Settings menu and going to the Special tab. The built-in Firmware Explorer is logical and convenient, and of the pre-installed programs, we find SecureIt and Power Manager the most useful.

During tests, we did not have any complaints about the instability of the Lenovo S860 firmware.

Battery

Here we come to the description of the most interesting characteristic of the Lenovo S860 for many readers of the review - battery life. In order not to torment you with unnecessary waiting, let's say right away that the mobile phone did not disappoint us. The Lenovo S860 battery can really last a very long time. After running the Antutu battery test and leaving the phone running, after more than three hours we saw that the battery had lost less than 30 percent of its charge. This model copes well with always-on Wi-Fi and with watching long movies from YouTube.

Draining the Lenovo S860 battery is really not an easy task, and an ordinary user who does not spend all his time on the Internet while watching movies can count on two to three days of full-fledged operation of the smartphone without resorting to a power outlet. This is confirmed by the Antutu battery test, which resulted in a magnificent 9845 points.

By the way, about the outlet. Since the battery capacity is large, it charges very slowly from the computer’s USB port, and if you perform any operations while using the smartphone, the charge indicator completely stops in place. The current supplied via USB is clearly not enough for this battery, so it is recommended to charge it from an outlet using a standard power supply.

conclusions

Lenovo S860 turned out to be an excellent successor to the work of its predecessor and younger brother. If the main characteristic by which you choose which smartphone to buy is its autonomy, take the Lenovo S860 without hesitation and don’t hesitate. From a leading brand, with such quality, metal and record battery life, this model has no equal.

But if, when choosing a new phone, you also care about its price and performance, things become less clear-cut. Among models with a similar or comparable screen diagonal with the same performance, it costs 700 UAH less, has a slot for a micro-SD flash drive, although it is made of plastic. , which costs not much more, beats our today's hero on all fronts except battery life, although it is also plastic.

Well, if we take into account the European model with 2GB of RAM and its price, choosing the Lenovo S860 becomes even more difficult.

It seems to us that the Lenovo S860 is a smartphone primarily for men who value reliability expressed in metal and who, first of all, require high levels of autonomy. For other categories of buyers, the deciding factors in favor of other models may still be the price and rather weak hardware characteristics.

General characteristics

Type

Deciding on the type of device (phone or smartphone?) is quite simple. If you need a simple and inexpensive device for calls and SMS, it is recommended to choose a telephone. A smartphone is more expensive, but it offers a wide variety of options: games, videos, the Internet, thousands of programs for all occasions. However, its battery life is significantly less than that of a regular phone.

Memory and processor

CPU

Before purchasing, check the specifications and equipment with the seller.

One of the most interesting phablets in terms of price/quality ratio today is the cost, technical characteristics and quality of photographs - this is what this article will be devoted to.

"Iron"

The main components on which the performance of any smartphone depends are the central processor and graphics adapter. It is their characteristics that determine the capabilities of the device. The time-tested MT6582 is used as the CPU in this smartphone. It consists of four cores of the Cortex-A7 architecture, each of which can operate with a clock frequency from 0.3 GHz to 1.3 GHz (depending on the level of complexity of the problem being solved). This processor belongs to the middle segment of devices. For most everyday tasks, its resources will be sufficient. From web browsing to complex 3D toys, it can handle them without any problem. A similar situation with the graphics adapter indicates that it has a normal, average level of performance. This gadget is equipped with 400 MP2 from Mali. The result is an excellent combination of a processor and a graphics adapter in the mid-price range.

Appearance, housing and ease of use

The front panel of this phablet is made of ordinary plastic. Not quite the right decision by the developers, since on a device with a diagonal of 5.3 inches it is better to use tempered Gorilla Eye glass. It is more resistant to scratches. Therefore, S860 owners simply cannot do without a special protective film, which can be purchased for an additional fee. But the building does not cause any complaints. It is made of aluminum and is almost impossible to damage.

The well-organized management system of the Photo in our article confirms this. The volume rocker is located in the upper right corner, and the power button is hidden on the top edge in the center. Below the screen there are three “standard” control buttons: “Home”, “Go to previous page” and “Menu”. This design solution allows you to operate the device with one hand with a minimum number of movements.

Screen

As noted earlier, the S860 belongs to the phablet class, that is, devices with a diagonal of 5 inches or more. In this case we are talking about 5.3 inches. The display is based on a high-quality IPS matrix with a resolution of 1280 pixels in length and 720 pixels in width. The image is high quality, the color rendition is rich. It is almost impossible to distinguish an individual pixel. Processing of up to five touches to the sensor surface simultaneously is supported.

Cameras: what they can do

Like most similar devices, two cameras are installed in the Lenovo S860. Reviews from device owners indicate that the one located on the back side allows you to take photographs and videos. It is based on an 8 megapixel matrix. It is also equipped with LED backlight for shooting at night, and there is an automatic image stabilization system. The maximum resolution of the photo obtained from it is 3248 x 2448 pixels, and the video, in turn, can be recorded in the format 1280 x 720 pixels. The second camera has more modest parameters. Its matrix is 1.6 megapixels, and its main purpose is to make video calls.

Memory

Different amounts of RAM can be installed in the Lenovo S860. A review of existing offers on the Internet indicates two modifications of this device: one of them has 1 GB, and the second has 2 GB. So you need to check with the seller before purchasing how much RAM this model has. By the way, purchasing the second modification is preferable.

The situation is simpler with the built-in flash drive: the S860 has 16 GB installed, 1.2 GB of which is reserved by the operating system itself. The rest of the built-in memory is allocated for user needs. If for some reason this is not enough, you can always install an external drive with a maximum capacity of 32 GB.

What is in the box?

This smartphone model has standard equipment. This is an entry-level device with nothing superfluous. and an instruction manual - this is a complete list of documents that come with it. In addition to these, the box also contains:

  • The device itself has a built-in battery.
  • Charger.
  • USB/micro-USB adapter cord. It charges the battery or connects to a personal computer.
  • OTG cable. It allows you to connect various USB devices (for example, a flash drive) to your smartphone.
  • Entry-level speaker system.

As noted earlier, a case and screen protector are not included in the package, so you will have to purchase them separately.

Battery

A serious advantage compared to competitors is the Lenovo S860 TITANIUM battery. Reviews from satisfied owners of this mobile device are further confirmation of this. In this case, we are talking about a battery capacity of 4000 milliampere/hour. Its resource is enough for 2 hours of active use (making calls, listening to music, watching movies and surfing the Internet). For a 5.3-inch device, this is an excellent result. But here it is necessary to note one nuance. The work of Chinese programmers plays an important role in all this. Most likely, they optimized the code so that the battery resource is used to a minimum. Hence the figure of 48 hours of battery life.

Software part

The version of Android with serial number 4.2.2 for Lenovo S860 was initially installed. The firmware is updated after the first connection to the Internet to one of the latest versions 4.4.2. This happens automatically and the user does not have to participate in it. A fairly rich set of applications is also preinstalled. The SECUREit program is used to protect against viruses.
