Radar detectors are a new generation of specialized equipment for the preventive detection of radars and traffic police video cameras on domestic roads. According to the principle of operation, it differs from traditional radar detectors, is safe for road users and is not prohibited by law in the Russian Federation.

However, radar detectors require proper installation, configuration and constant updating of databases. Why is this necessary, how is it produced and what results does it give?

Radar detector databases

Unlike anti-radars, which create frequency interference in front of a moving car, confusing traffic police equipment and making it impossible to detect a violation of the speed limit, detector radars do not emit anything, but constantly receive surrounding frequency signals and are able to isolate the signals of working police systems from the electronic “noise.” speed control.

To identify radars and video recording cameras, signature technology is used - the principle of determining the individual signal of each police device on the road (it is called a unique “signature”). Radar detector:

receives the emitted signal;
the signature module processes its parameters (amplitude, frequency and periodicity of pulses, pauses between pulses);
checks the parameters with known signatures of police equipment loaded into the database;
identifies the signal as a traffic police radar signal or as extraneous noise;
warns the driver to slow down.

That is, radar detectors are able to distinguish frequency pulses from traffic police control equipment and distinguish it from other frequency signals - emissions from door opening systems, mobile operator translators, ABS and GPS systems of cars, etc. This is the main advantage and advantage of signature radars.

How does the device distinguish the desired microwave signals from extraneous ones? For this purpose, the signature module contains a built-in database of all known traffic police radar signals. And in order to minimize errors and false alarms of the device, the radar database is supplemented with a database of known extraneous signals (“noise”), and the device is checked against both one and the other database, reducing the probability of error to a minimum.

However, equipment for traffic police is being improved, new radar models with more complex frequency radiation are constantly being released (often with combined microwave, laser and GPS signals). This means that the database of radar detectors must be constantly updated (upload new firmware).

How are radar detector databases updated?

Typically, updates to radar detectors are offered by equipment developers on official websites. An update is a new version of firmware, a program that fully controls all hardware functions and system options. When new options and data appear, the firmware:

downloaded from the developer’s website;
opens and installs on a PC to which the radar is connected via USB;
loaded into the radar memory.

Most operations are automated, but you need to perform a number of operations according to the algorithm recommended by hardware and software developers.

Procedure for updating SHO-ME radar databases

SHO-ME signature radar detectors are high-tech universal radar equipment made in South Korea. The radars are easy to install and configure, are trouble-free, and the developer quite often updates the database on its official website.

To update the radar databases, you must do the following:

Go to official siteSHO-ME, select the “UPDATES” section and go to the “Updates for radar detectors” page.

Open the “Radar detector type” list and select the device model that is installed on your car

Click on “Update camera database” and select “Radar detector model”

Below on the page you should click “Download camera database”.

After this, you need to click on the downloaded archive and unpack it on your PC.

The radar detector should be connected to a PC using a USB cable, having first turned off the mains power to the radar.

The installer (file.exe) must be opened or run as Administrator.

Next, a fully automated process of unpacking temporary files will begin, after which click “DOWNLOAD” and wait until the program is installed. The download process cannot be interrupted!

After completing the installation of the new firmware version with updated databases, reboot the radar (Menu).

SilverStone radar detector database update

SilverStone radar detectors - modern equipment from one of the largest electronics manufacturers in South th Korea. The developer offers to download updates to the databases of radars and video recording cameras on yourofficial website.

The firmware update process is almost identical to SHO-ME radar updates:

The radar is connected to a PC.
The archive is downloaded from the developer's website.
The downloaded archive is unpacked (pre-disable anti-virus programs and firewall).
Select "Extract".
Go to the unpacked program folder and run the installer.
After 1-2 minutes, the program will install and warn you with a message about installing a new version.

Upon completion of installation, the program will display information about the firmware version (FW) and voice file (Voice).

At the beginning of the installation process, you can check the “Check” checkbox (checking for new files). After that, select the unpacked file with the .bin extension and click “Download to device.” Only new files will be downloaded, the firmware itself will not be affected.

In addition, before downloading updates, you can change the parameters of the radar menu (“Settings menu” - setting parameters - “Save” - set a point on the Menu item - “Download” - exit the program). With the new settings loaded, you can now download the installer to your device.

Thus, updating the databases on the radar detector will allow your device to constantly expand the list of signatures of traffic police control devices loaded into it and reduce the number of errors and false positives.

Updating the databases is a simple process that is performed in semi-automatic mode after you download the archive with the new firmware installer on your PC. The main thing is to be careful and follow the installation instructions exactly.

On all detectors except the STR-9540EX GL, press and hold the DIM, MUTE and CITY buttons for a couple of seconds until the word UPDATE appears on the detector display. On the STR-9540EX GL detector, entering the Update mode is done by selecting the appropriate item in the Settings Menu.
3. We wait until the computer sees the connected equipment and offers to format it. We refuse the offer.
4. Launch the program (downloaded file UMSPTUpdater_vX_X_A_.exe, instead of X_X - the current version), in the program window click the Update button.
5. At the end of the process, close the program and turn off the detector. When connecting the detector to a car, it is recommended to reset it to factory settings (via the menu).

STR-GP One, STR-GPS Uni, STR-GP One BT

For your convenience, the ARROW item has been added to the update interface. If you want to download the full database, which includes Strelka complexes, then you need to leave a tick in this box. If you use an external GPS in tandem with our detector, equipped with a module for identifying the Strelka complex with a special signal (models with the EX or EXT index), you can uncheck the box and Strelka radars will not be uploaded to the updated database.

How to choose the right firmware? Everything is very simple!

How to reboot?

Option 1: SHO-ME

Database updates for SHO-ME radar detectors are released quite frequently and therefore the procedure must be repeated at high intervals. Installation of all required files, regardless of the specific model, occurs through special software.

Open the official website of the device manufacturer using the link provided above and in the section "Updates" go to page "Updates for SHO-ME radar detectors".

From the list "Type of radar detector" Select the type of device you are using.

Click on the button "Updating the camera database" and in the line "Radar detector model" select the appropriate option.

Scroll down the page and click on the link “Download camera database”.

Using any archiver, unpack the downloaded archive.

Now connect your PC to the SHO-ME radar detector via USB. The power cable must be disconnected.

Open the EXE file by left-clicking on it. In some cases, you may need to run as administrator.

After this, automatic preparation of temporary files will begin.

In the main window "SHO-ME DB Downloader" press the button.
Note: Do not interrupt the database installation under any circumstances.

Remember to reboot your device before using it again using the button "MENU".

If you did everything correctly, the radar detector database will install without errors.

Option 2: SUPRA

As in the case of SHO-ME, you can update the database on the SUPRA radar detector using a special program downloaded from the manufacturer’s official website. However, the number of required actions is slightly different due to the need to download additional files.

Through the main menu of the resource, open the page "Updates for RD".

Expand the list "Select model" and indicate the device you are using.

After downloading, click on the link "Download" Near "Software for updating", "Complete Database" And "Drivers".

Three files should appear in the save folder on your computer, two of which are archived. Unpack them using any convenient program.

Open the directory "booree_drivers" and unpack the archive with the driver according to the bitness of your Windows OS.

From the final folder, run the EXE file and install the driver automatically.

Return to the directory with the downloaded files and in the folder "updatetool_setup" run the installer.

Driver installation
