Yes, I still decided to write a guide on installing WinXP from a flash drive. No fills. Just an ISO image of the Windows XP distribution, a bootable Grub4Dos flash drive and straight hands (where would we be without them). There will also be an article for Windows 7/8 soon.
This article will discuss 2 methods:
1 way. Using direct image mapping and the FiraDisk driver.
Method 2. Using WinNTSetup from under WinPE.
It's up to you to decide which method to use. But I like WinNTSetup better. It makes it faster and less likely that the installation will fall off in the middle. There are also more options for partitioning and customizing the physical space of the hard drive.

1 way.
Using direct image mapping and the FiraDisk driver.

1. Create a Boot folder in the root of the flash drive and drop the Windows XP installation image (WINXPx86.iso) into it
Note:
1) The image must be defragmented! Otherwise you will get an error:
Error 60: File for drive emulation must be in one contiguous disk area.

2. Drop the FiraDisk.img file from the archive (floppy disk image that contains the FiraDisk driver) into the Boot folder.

3. Add the following items to menu.lst:

title Windows XP Start Install
set MYISO=WINXPx86.iso
map --mem (md)0x800+4 (99)
map --mem /Boot/FiraDisk.img (fd0)
map --mem /Boot/FiraDisk.img (fd1)
map /Boot/%MYISO% (0xff)
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
map --hook
write (99) \nStartOptions=cdrom,vmem=find:/Boot/%MYISO%;floppy,vmem=find:/Boot/FiraDisk.img;\n\0
chainloader(0xff)/I386/SETUPLDR.BIN

Title Windows XP Continue Install
set MYISO=WINXPx86.iso
map --mem (md)0x800+4 (99)
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
map --hook
write (99) \nStartOptions=cdrom,vmem=find:/Boot/%MYISO%;\n\0
chainloader (hd0)+1

Note: when you first boot from a flash drive, you need to select 1 menu item ("Windows XP Start Install"), after reboot, select 2 item ("Windows XP Continue Install"), and upon subsequent reboot, also this 2 item. It is not advisable to reboot yourself. Turn off the PC too. Otherwise everything will be all over again. It's better not to touch the flash drive.

4. That's it, you can install WinXP.
Note:
1) For some motherboards, for some reason the method does not work. When installing from a USB-HDD, it will also not work, as they say.
2) Don't forget about the integration of SATA/AHCI drivers into the distribution.

Complete ready-made kit for installing Windows XP/Vista/7/8 - take .

Method 2.
Using WinNTSetup from under WinPE.

Note: Hiren's BootCD 15.1 RUS will be used as WinPE.

1. Download WinNTSetup. You can take the Russian version of WinNTSetup 2.3.3.0. Download and put it on a flash drive in any convenient place.

2. We also drop the WinXP image to any place on the flash drive.

3. Load into Mini Windows Xp from HBCD.
Note: if you don’t know how, then read the article (point 19).

4. Let's launch WinNTSetup from under WinPE. Switch to the tab " Windows 2000/XP/2003" and indicate the WinXP image that you just uploaded to the flash drive by clicking "Select" with the right mouse button.

Note: sometimes it happens that the image is not defined inWinNTSetup as an installation one, then you have to unpack or mount it. Fortunately, HBCD allows you to do this. To mount the image, you need to right-click on the image and mount it using ImDisk into a virtual drive (for example F:).

5. Specify the drive on which the bootloader and WinXP itself will be installed (usually this is the same drive). The disk can be formatted by clicking on the " F" to the right of the drive name entry line.

6. Make sure there are all the “green checkmarks” in the bootloader section, i.e. there was the correct MBR code (WinNT5.x or WinNT6.x), the correct PBR code (NTLDR), and the partition was bootable (primary and active). If somewhere there is no “daw” (there is a “cross”), then use BOOTICE. We fix everything that is needed in BOOTICE, and re-select this disk in WinNTSetup. All “crosses” should become “checkmarks”.
Note: I wrote about how to use BOOTICE in the article.

7. Check the necessary boxes in the settings. Usually this is not required, so we leave everything as is. Press the button " Installation".

8. A window appears. We check the source and destination of the installation. We leave Bootsect. Click OK.

Installing a second Windows on another disk partition from a running first Windows. In order not to languish while waiting for the installation media to load while system files are copied from it to the hard drive, installing a second Windows can be simplified using a free program WinNTSetup.

1. About the WinNTSetup program.

WinNTSetup is a small program designed for a narrow range of tasks: it allows you to install Windows in a simplified mode on other partitions and hard drives of the computer, as well as on virtual VHD disks. Additional features of the program include a small selection of tweaks for the installed system and the ability to integrate your own drivers. If in the usual case WinNTSetup only saves time on installing a second operating system, then for cases where there is neither a DVD drive nor a flash drive, it is also the optimal solution to the problem.

All that is required to install Windows on another disk partition from a running current system is a downloaded ISO image of the Windows distribution and, in fact, the WinNTSetup program itself. WinNTSetup works on this principle: certain parameters are set in its window, after which the system installation process starts in the background. At the same time, you can continue to work with the computer as if background tasks were being performed by any other minimized program. Once the process of installing Windows on the second partition of the disk is complete, all that remains to be done in normal mode, booting from the newly installed Windows, is to go through the final stages of the installation process: wait for the drivers to be installed, set the region, keyboard layout and other parameters, create a local profile or connect your Microsoft account. Let's look at all this in more detail.

First of all, of course, you need to make a backup of your current Windows. Not so much for its own sake, but for the sake of the boot sector, where, naturally, during the installation of the second system, changes will be made to another partition of the disk. Having an emergency bootable disk with a backup program is welcome.

2. Download WinNTSetup.

You can download WinNTSetup from the website. This is a portable program that does not require installation on the system. After launch, you immediately need to agree to download some data.

3. Connecting the ISO image of the Windows distribution.

WinNTSetup takes installation files for the second Windows either from the installation DVD in the drive or from an ISO image downloaded from the Internet. The downloaded ISO image must be mounted into a virtual drive. In Windows 8.1 and 10 systems, this is done normally using the “Connect” option in the context menu on the ISO image.

In Windows 7, you must use third-party programs like Daemon Tools to mount ISO images.

4. Install Windows on another disk partition.

WinNTSetup will start with the installation tab active for versions of Windows starting with Vista. In the first paragraph of the program window you need to specify the path to either the file install.wim, or to install.esd included in the Windows distribution. Depending on the build of Windows, its distribution will contain an “install” file with either one or another extension. Click the button " Choose».

And indicate the path to the file, it is located on the installation disk in the folder “ sources».

The second item in the WinNTSetup window specifies the disk partition that will serve as the boot sector of the Windows installation. In Windows 8.1 and 10, a certain partition is specified by default Z. As partition Z, WinNTSetup identifies a small technical partition (350-500 MB) of these versions of Windows called "System Reserved" ( System Reserved).

There is no need to change anything here.

In Windows 7, this item will default to disk WITH, since in this version the boot sector is placed on the same partition along with the operating system itself. And in this case, too, we do not change the presets, we leave the disk WITH.

We go down to the next point and use the button " Choose"We indicate the very second partition of the hard drive where we are going to install the second Windows.

If the disk partition selected for the second Windows was not previously formatted, this can be done without leaving the WinNTSetup window. When you press the button F"The standard function of formatting disk partitions will start.

Basic information about the system being installed has been entered; now you can begin to start the installation process. But before you press the button at the bottom of the window “ Installation", you can delve into the program settings. In the lower block of the window, the path to your drivers is indicated and tweaks are applied to the installed system.

After pressing the button Installation"The launch of the Windows installation process on the second partition of the disk is additionally confirmed by clicking " OK».

After which you can minimize the program window and go about your business. WinNTSetup will notify you of the completion of the operation with the following notification.

This means that the launch of only installed Windows will begin during the preparation of the operating system for deployment. After the computer restarts, we will be greeted by a bootloader menu with a choice of operating systems to launch. We select, accordingly, the newly installed Windows. And we go through the steps of Windows deployment - specifying regional data, keyboard layout, network settings, creating an account, etc.

5. Installing Windows on another hard drive.

The process of installing a second Windows on another hard drive is a little more complicated, since for Windows 8.1 and 10 systems you will have to manually create a separate partition for the bootloader. For Windows 7, you just need to make active the partition of another disk on which you plan to install the system. Launch the standard disk management utility by pressing the +R keys and enter:

diskmgmt.msc

If the other hard drive is unpartitioned, we create partitions on it. In the first section, call up the context menu and click “ Make the section active».

We make sure that the section is active, remember its letter.

In the WinNTSetup window, specify the path to the installation file, as shown in the previous paragraph of the article. And we indicate the prepared active partition as the bootloader partition and the partition of Windows 7 itself. And we start the installation process.

For Windows 8.1 and 10, you need to prepare both the system partition and the bootloader partition - the same technical partition that is not displayed in the system explorer, but in disk space managers it is listed as a “System Reserved” partition. If the first partition of another hard drive has already been created, you need to delete it and create a new one in its place. In the context menu on the unallocated space of the deleted partition, select “ Create a simple volume».

We carefully check that the first small section is active, and remember the letters of both sections.

In the WinNTSetup window we indicate the newly prepared partitions: in the second paragraph - a small partition, in the third - a partition of the system itself. And start the installation process ( Installation).

After WinNTSetup completes its work, you need to restart your computer, enter the BIOS, set the boot priority, respectively, from another hard drive and go through the Windows deployment steps.

The WinNTSetup Portable Multi/Ru program can be downloaded

Now I will write a small instruction both for myself and for other people who encounter the same problem as me, namely “ reinstall Windows when CD-ROM and USB don't work?»

Introduction

One of the employees gave me an ultrabook Samsung NP530U3C

The initial reason was that her laptop turned off for a very long time, which was confirmed, it took about 15 minutes to load + another 10 minutes to accelerate the desktop.

When copying, some files caused an error, which clearly indicated that the disk began to crumble, while copying was in progress with errors, it was possible to save some of the information, after which the disk simply died. (what really surprised me was that the ultrabook was not cheap at the time, but they shoved a platter drive into it, not an ssd)

We bought a 240 gig SSD Kingston v300 from the store and that’s when the dance with the tambourine began.

When connecting an external DVD-Rom and CD-ROM, nothing was shown in the bios, as well as flash drives, that is, none of the USB ports work on the ultrabook.

Non-standard installation of Windows (he is also the worker who helped me)

For this method we need the WinNTSetup program - download from my Yandex disk (or from the website http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/149612-winntsetup-v3874/)

So let's go step by step:

How to install Windows XP using WinNTSetup on a computer with Windows 8.1, 10 already installed

Hi all! WinNTSetup is a very useful program; with it you can install Windows XP, 7, 8.1, 10 on almost any drive, be it a regular hard drive or even a portable USB hard drive. To install, you do not need any Windows installation disk or bootable USB flash drive, you only need an ISO image of the system itself. The process of working with the program is simple and understandable even for a novice PC user. The only thing that questions may arise is with loading the system, if you install an older Windows XP on a computer with Windows 7, 8.1, 10, but we will also deal with loading in today’s article.

  • Note: Friends, if you are installing Windows XP on a new computer, then the ISO image of the operating system is a must. If you have not integrated the SATA drivers into the image, then in this case in the BIOS after the first reboot you need to switch the AHCI option in the IDE, otherwise the XP boot will be interrupted by a blue screen (this point is noted in the article).

So, let's start the installation process.

First, open the Windows XP ISO image

and copy all the files from it to some folder and name it, for example, Windows XP.

Managing my computer's disks

In the main WinNTSetup window, select the Windows 2000/XP/2003 item and in the “Path to Windows installation files” item, click on the “Select” button.

In the explorer window that appears, select (previously created by us at the beginning of the article) the folder with Windows XP files, select it with the left mouse and click"Select folder".

Middle point "D" suit on which the bootloader will be installed » leave unchanged.

Select the partition (D:) and click on the “Select folder” button.

" Installation"

The initial stage of installing Windows XP on the partition (D:) begins.

"OK".

Reboot the computer.

Note: If you have not integrated SATA drivers into the Windows XP image, then enter the BIOS and switch the AHCI option in the IDE, otherwise the XP boot will be interrupted by a blue screen.

We save the BIOS settings and reboot, the Windows XP installation process continues.

We accept the terms of the license agreement.

Enter the name.

Enter the key.

Postpone the decision.

Enter the name of our account.

Windows XP is loading.

Unfortunately, XP boots by default and without a menu for selecting operating systems, that is, it is now impossible to boot into Windows 8.1.

In the initial phase of installing Windows XP, the WinNTSetup program added the necessary entry about Windows XP to the boot storage configuration file (BCD) and, in theory, now a menu for selecting operating systems should appear when booting:

But there is no menu when the computer boots, and here’s why. The fact is that the Windows XP boot loader is NTLDR not familiar with the bootloader of the newer Windows 8.1 operating system - BOOTMGR and after installation by the second system, Win XP simply overwrites the active PBR (Partition Boot Record) partition pointing to its bootloader NTLDR, after which one Win XP is loaded on the computer. All you have to do to boot both systems is rewrite the bootloader to BOOTMGR, in this case both systems will boot, since the Windows 8.1 bootloader - BOOTMGR knows the Windows XP bootloader very well - NTLDR and, if necessary, will be able to transfer the download to it.

Download the Bootice program and run it

In the main window of the program, select our hard drive, click on the button PBR processing.

We see that our hard drive has NTLDR boot record.

Mark the item BOOTMGR Boot Record and press the button Installation/Configuration.

Thus, we transferred the bootloader to the newer Windows 8.1 operating system.

Let's reboot.

Now, when the computer boots, a menu for selecting operating systems will appear:

Windows 8.1

Don’t forget, if you switched the AHCI option to IDE in the BIOS, then before booting into Windows 8.1, switch back to AHCI, otherwise Win 8.1 will not boot.
