One of the most common questions regarding Windows 10 is how to make it faster (especially true for laptops and netbooks). In this guide, we'll talk about why Windows 10 slows down and how to speed it up, what affects its performance, and what actions can make it faster in certain situations.

We will not consider improving performance by replacing hardware (for example, a hard drive from an HDD to an SSD), but only those cases that cause Windows 10 to slow down and how to fix it, speeding up the Windows system.

In other articles on a similar topic, there are often comments such as “I use a program that speeds up the computer and the computer does not slow down.” Personal opinion on this issue: automatic “accelerators” are useless and when using them it is advisable to understand what exactly they do and how.

Checking startup programs

One of the most common reasons why Windows 10, as well as previous versions of OS users, is slow is programs or applications that automatically launch when the system starts: they not only increase the time it takes to start up your computer, but can also reduce performance during normal work.

Many users may not even know that they have anything in startup, or be confident that there is only what is needed to work, but in most cases this is not the case.

Below are examples of some programs that can run automatically and consume computer resources, but at the same time be useless in normal operation.

  • Programs from printers and scanners - whoever has a printer, scanner or MFP, they are automatically loaded along with programs from their manufacturer. At the same time, no one uses them, we scan and print without these programs. Therefore, you can safely disable them in startup.
  • Programs for downloading something, for example, torrent clients, file downloaders, etc. - if you don't automatically download files from the Internet, then you don't need to use uTorrent, MediaGet or anything like that at startup. Remove them from startup. If necessary (when loading a file that must be opened through the appropriate program), they will start themselves. Please note that constantly running and distributing something through a torrent client (sharing), especially on a laptop with a regular hard drive, can lead to poor performance, in other words, slowdowns.
  • Cloud storages such as OneDrive, Yandex Drive, Google drive, etc., which you do not use. For example, in Windows 10, OneDrive starts by default. If you don't use it and don't need it at startup, remove it or disable it from startup.
  • Unknown programs or applications – You may have various programs in your startup list that you know nothing about and have never used. These could be programs from the laptop or computer manufacturer, or maybe some programs that were installed together with other programs without your knowledge. They can be disabled experimentally, for example, all programs named Toshiba can be disabled and restarted. You will see that nothing will change, since the programs in the startup do not directly affect the operation of the system and you can disable them all. But I don’t recommend that you disable your antivirus; it’s better to leave it on.

If you want the system to work faster, save only what is really necessary, as I said above, for example, antivirus, the rest can be disabled.

Also, in addition to programs in startup, view the list of installed programs in the “Programs and Features” section in Control Panel. Remove anything you don't need and keep only the software you use on your computer.

How to speed up the Windows 10 interface

Often on computers and laptops with the latest updates, the Windows 10 interface slows down. In some cases, the cause of the problem is the CFG (Control Flow Guard) function, enabled by default. It is aimed at protecting against exploits that use memory access vulnerabilities.

If, for the sake of speed, you abandon some protection measures to improve performance, you can disable the CFG function.

Processes that use CPU and memory in Windows 10

Sometimes it happens that the incorrect operation of a background process causes a drop in system performance. You can see such processes using the Task Manager.

Windows 10 tracking features

Many people know that Windows 10 spies on its users. And if I personally don’t have any problems with this, then from the point of view of the impact on system speed, such functions can have a direct impact.

For this reason, stopping them may be entirely appropriate. For more information about these features and how to disable them, read How to disable Windows 10 tracking.

Optimizing applications in the Start menu

After upgrading or installing Windows 10, you'll find a set of live app tiles in the Start menu. They also use system resources (albeit to a small extent) to update and display information. Do you use them?

If not, remove them from the Start menu or disable live tiles (right click - unpin from start screen) or delete them.

Drivers

Another reason why Windows 10 is slow for most users is the lack of original drivers. This often applies to video card drivers, as well as SATA drivers, chipset and other devices.

Despite the fact that Windows 10 seems to be able to automatically install a large number of original hardware drivers, it is worth going to the device manager (by right-clicking on the “Start” button) and looking at the properties of devices (first of all the video card) in the “Driver” tab. . If Microsoft is listed as the supplier, download and install drivers from the official website of the manufacturer of your laptop or computer, and if it is a video card from NVidia, AMD or Intel, install depending on the model.

Graphic effects and sounds

I don't think turning off graphics effects and sounds can significantly improve the speed of Windows 10 on modern computers, but on an older PC or laptop you can get some performance improvements.

To turn off graphical effects, right-click the Start button and select System, then on the left, Advanced system settings. On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Options.

Here you can select “Ensure the best performance” by disabling all Windows 10 animations and effects at once. You can also leave some of them, without which it is not very convenient to work - for example, maximizing and collapsing dialog boxes.

Alternatively, press Windows Key (Logo Key) + I, go to Accessibility - Other Options, and turn off Play Animation in Windows.

Also, in Windows 10's Settings, under Personalization - Colors, turning off transparency for the Start menu, taskbar, and action center can have a positive impact on the overall performance of a slow computer.

To turn off event sounds, right-click the Start button and select Control Panel, then click Sound. In the Sounds tab, you can turn on the Silent sound scheme, and Windows 10 will no longer need to access your hard drive when searching for files and start playing sound on certain events.

Unwanted and malware

If your system is not noticeably slowing down and no method is helping, then malware and unwanted programs may be showing up on your computer, and many of these programs are "invisible" to antivirus programs, no matter how good your antivirus is.

I advise you to occasionally scan your computer in the future using additional utilities such as AdwCleaner, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware or Himan Pro, in addition to your antivirus.

If you notice that browsers have become slow, you should look at the list of extensions and disable all unnecessary and unknown ones. Often they are the problem.

What not to do to speed up Windows 10

Here's a list of some things I wouldn't recommend doing to speed up your system that are often recommended all over the internet.

  • Disabling the Windows 10 page file is often recommended if you have a significant amount of RAM to extend the life of SSD hard drives and similar things. I wouldn't do this: firstly, there is a high probability of no performance gain, and some programs may not even run without a page file, even if you have 32GB of RAM. In this case, if you are a beginner, you may not even understand why they do not start.
  • Frequently “clean your computer of debris.” Some on a daily basis or automatically clear the browser cache from the computer, clean the registry, clear temporary files using CCleaner and similar programs. Although using such utilities can be useful and sometimes convenient, your actions may not always lead to the desired result, you need to understand, preferably understand, what a particular program does. For example, clearing the browser cache is only necessary if problems occur in the browser. The cache itself in browsers is designed specifically to speed up page loading and really speeds up the browser.
  • Disable unnecessary Windows 10 services. Same as with the page file, especially if you're not very good at it - when there's a problem with browsing the Internet, a program, or something else, you may not remember that the problem is caused by a disabled service. Therefore, you need to be extremely careful with services and before disabling them, always look at what it is responsible for. You can view it on the Internet.
  • Use programs in startup "To speed up your computer." Remember that changes may not only not speed up, but also slow down the system.
  • Disable file indexing in Windows 10. Except when an SSD drive is installed on your computer.
  • Disable services. This was discussed above.

Additional Information

In addition to all of the above, I can recommend:

  • If the version is not pirated, then keep your system updated (however, this is not difficult, because updates are installed forcibly, whether you want it or not, unless the service is disabled), monitor the state of the computer, programs at startup, and the presence of malicious software.
  • If you are a more experienced user, use licensed or free software from official sites, and have not encountered viruses for a long time, then you may want to consider using only Windows 10's built-in protections instead of third-party antiviruses and firewalls. But this advice is only for experienced ones.
  • Monitor the free space on the system partition of your hard drive. If it is not enough (less than 3-5 GB), it can lead to performance problems. Moreover, if your hard drive is divided into two or more partitions, I recommend using the second of these partitions only for storing data, but not for installing programs - they should better be placed on the system partition (unless you have two physical disks) .
  • I strongly do not recommend keeping two or more third-party antivirus programs on your computer. Many people have probably encountered the fact that installing two antiviruses resulted in the system refusing to work. There is no need to do this.

It is also worth noting that the reasons for the slow operation of Windows 10 can be caused not only by some of the above, but also by a number of other problems, sometimes more serious: for example, the hard drive begins to “crumble,” processes overheat, and others.

If you have any questions, write in the comments.

That's all. All the best.

How to speed up Windows 10 if your computer is slow? Optimization Tips

“Ten” began to treacherously slow down after just a few months? Don't rush to reinstall anything. In this guide, we will explain in detail how to speed up Windows 10 on a computer or laptop without reinstalling.

Optimizing Windows 10: cleaning startup

One of the serious obstacles that most often slows down Windows 10 is programs that automatically launch along with the OS. Because of them, the computer takes longer to boot, and overall performance is seriously affected. And the most interesting thing is that most people don’t even know about these programs: there is zero benefit, but resources are used.

We described a lot of important information on optimizing Windows in our article “Optimizing Windows XP”

Disabling everything unnecessary in startup is one of the reliable ways to speed up Win 10. What do you need for this?

How to understand what the system really needs to work, and what wastes memory? The easiest way is to google each of the “suspicious” programs: most likely, 90% of them are at least not necessary for you. Often autorun is full of unnecessary software from the PC or laptop manufacturer, hidden adware or even spyware.

What exactly can you turn off?

  • Cloud storage(so, in the case of “ten”, OneDrive is automatically “registered” in startup).
  • uTorrent, MediaGet and other programs for downloading - when you need them, run them separately. In addition, the constant distribution of torrents significantly slows down Windows of any version.
  • Official software, which was loaded by default when installing a scanner, printer or MFP. You are unlikely to use it, but the devices will work just fine anyway.
To optimize Windows 10, we only clean startup; the programs themselves will remain on the computer. So you can run any of them manually if necessary.

We turn off services that load the system “idlely”

Developers cannot predict which services you will need. Therefore, the entire array automatically starts along with the OS. To speed up Windows 10 on a laptop or computer, it is useful to find unnecessary services that you personally do not need and turn them off.

What to turn off and what is better not to touch? There are many lists circulating on the Internet, but we will focus on those services that can be turned off with virtually no risk. Let's start with the most “gluttonous”.

  • Update Center - it is better to periodically update the system manually.
  • Windows Search - if you rarely search for something on your computer.

These services can be safely removed if the computer is not connected to a public network:

  • KtmRm for distributed transaction coordinator.
  • Offline files.
  • IPSec Policy Agent.
  • Computer browser.
  • NetBIOS support module.
  • Server Network service.

The task of these services has already been taken over by the antivirus:

  • Firewall.
  • Windows Defender.

These are useless in 99% of cases, but they can slow down Windows 10 significantly:

  • Adaptive brightness control.
  • IP Ancillary Service.
  • Secondary login.
  • Client for tracking changed connections.
  • IPsec key modules for Internet key exchange and authenticated IP.
  • SSDP detection.
  • Parental Control.
  • Error Logging Service.
  • Remote registry.

Leave these only if you are using devices that correspond to them:

  • Smart card.
  • Fax machine.
  • Print manager - for the printer.
  • Image download service (WIA) - for scanners and photographic equipment.
  • Bluetooth support - hardly anyone uses bluetooth anymore.
  • Tablet PC input service - if you don't use handwriting input.
  • Basic TPM services - if there are no BitLocker or TMP based monitoring devices.

How to disable the service?

Double-click on it and in the window that appears, in the “Startup type” line, set “Disabled” / then “Apply” or “OK”.

We carry out “cleaning” among the installed software

It is worth keeping only the software that you really need on your laptop or PC - removing unnecessary programs will significantly speed up your computer on Windows 10.

You will feel the effect immediately. The result in optimizing Windows 10 is especially noticeable if a fair amount of “junk” has accumulated among the installed software. And this is what happens most often if you don’t monitor it separately.

Cleaning junk files from drive C (system)

Over the course of months of operation, any OS accumulates a fair amount of “junk” system files. To speed up Windows 10, we recommend removing them periodically.

Cleaning your hard drive from unnecessary files (our own)

If you have a capacious hard drive of several terabytes, and there is still a lot of free space on it, you do not need this advice. But if the computer is old and the hard drive is “full to the brim,” this can greatly slow down Windows. If there is less than 20-30 percent of free space left, problems with performance are almost guaranteed.

Of course, all this takes time, but with a small and cluttered hard drive, the effort is worth it: every 5-10% freed up will help significantly speed up your Windows 10 PC.

  1. How to approach the matter? Slowly. Look through all the files on your computer: you will probably find a lot of incomprehensible archives and folders that have not been opened for many years, a bunch of movies, heavy TV series, old installers, etc. For convenience, you can sort everything by size: this way you will clearly see what “eats up” more of the whole place.

If you are not yet ready to change the hard drive, you will have to decisively remove everything unnecessary. Valuable but heavy things can be partially “stuffed” onto flash drives, external drives and various cloud services.

  2. Another tip: never save personal files on disk "WITH"- because of this, a weak computer running Windows 10 is almost guaranteed to slow down. If there is something there now, move the files to neighboring drives, for example, to “D”. Don't forget about:
  • desktop (if necessary, it is better to create shortcuts),
  • libraries (my videos, my images, etc.)
  • and be sure to check your “Downloads” folder (tons of long-forgotten files often accumulate in it).
After all deletions, do not forget to empty the trash!

Defragmentation (optimization) of disks

It is especially good to carry out defragmentation after you have cleaned up “system garbage”, removed some installed software, or manually deleted unnecessary files from your computer. This useful procedure restores the correct disk structure, which seriously speeds up Windows 10 on a weak computer.

If you nevertheless took the time to radically clean non-system disks (removed everything heavy but unnecessary from them), repeat the procedure for them (D, E, etc.)

Cleaning the registry with a program to optimize Windows 10

If you are not an advanced user, we do not recommend digging through the registry yourself. It's safer to leave everything to a program that will do it for you. Let's look at the steps using CCleaner as an example, a popular free program for optimizing Windows 10. By the way, cleaning and defragmentation can be done in it.

Eliminate unnecessary load on the processor

Often some completely unnecessary process is constantly running in the background, causing the computer to slow down greatly. To speed up Windows 10, it is highly advisable to clean up the task manager.

Optimizing your hard drive on Windows 10

If you have a regular HDD and not a high-speed SSD, do this.

The hard drive will now work better, and at the same time, Windows 10 will also speed up a little.

Removing unnecessary tiles from the Start menu

The system automatically places a set of live application tiles on the Start menu. Stop by and see if you use them?

We recommend leaving only those that are really necessary, and selecting the remaining rectangles with the right mouse button and selecting “Remove from the Start menu.” This is not a panacea, but it will still slow down Windows 10 a little less.

Turn off tracking in Windows 10

Yes, the “top ten” really “spys” on our actions, regularly sending the collected information to Microsoft. The tracking function also consumes some system resources. To optimize Windows 10 on slow computers, it is better to turn it off.

When a speed increase is urgently needed: remove special effects

Simplifying graphics

If your computer slows down too much, you can radically speed up Windows 10 by sacrificing “cool” graphics. Of course, the graphical shell of the OS will become very simple, turning into something between the seven and the rare Win 98. But the serious increase in performance on old computers is worth it - all the freed up resources will be directed in the right direction.

Particularly good results in terms of optimizing Windows 10 can be expected here on weak PCs and laptops with up to 4GB of RAM.

Now turn off the animation

Turn off menu transparency

This detail looks impressive, of course, but it also wastes precious memory.

Removing system sounds

Another good method that will contribute to speeding up Windows 10. Don’t worry, the sound on the computer itself will not go away. Only alerts for various system events will be removed. You can easily do without them, but the system will no longer have to “torture” the hard drive in search of this or that sound file.

Windows 10 still slows down. What else can you do?

Here are some more useful optimization tips that will speed up Windows 10 on any computer or laptop.

  1. Check your system for viruses regularly. Here are some smart free antivirus programs:
  2. Make it a rule to always turn off your computer at night. If the system works without stopping for several days, it begins to seriously slow down - this is especially felt on weak computers. If Windows 10 is slow, reboot more often, it really helps.
  3. Don’t forget to clean your laptop or PC from dust twice a year - a computer clogged with dust will heat up and work much slower.
  4. Captain Obvious, but still. If your computer is weak, try to open as few programs as possible at the same time - especially those that heavily load the processor. It's better to take turns. This also applies to browser tabs.

Now you know how to speed up Windows 10 if it is slow. Well, if the system is completely “killed” and reinstallation cannot be avoided, be sure to take a look at our article “How to reinstall Windows 10”. And be sure to share your successes and questions in the comments!

Windows 10 radically solves the question of how to speed up your computer, offering the widest range of functions in the entire history of windows. The system is initially well optimized for new devices and shows high performance, largely thanks to automatic services. So, if previously on Win7/8.1 it was necessary to manually clean temporary file storage folders, now the system cleans out everything outdated and unnecessary on its own. For example, after updating, after 10 days the old Windows will be deleted. The same applies to old update packages and optimization of drives, both solid-state SSDs and old HDDs. The question of how to increase system performance lies only in the plane of hardware limitations (in the case of using old or very weak, budget equipment).

Therefore, for those who want to build friendly relations with a new system on an old laptop or PC, it is advisable to learn a number of tips for fine-tuning.

Windows 10: The Essentials for Success

Like previous versions, Windows 10 was developed based on Windows Vista with a deep modernization of the kernel and shell. This is the newest, most secure version of “windows”, characterized by high performance, it is well optimized for old systems and “weak” computers. Initially, at the time of release, the version was not stable, but after a year and a half, drivers appeared for almost any device, the system became more stable and reliable. Getting the device to show the blue screen of death has become quite problematic. Unless you are an insider and use test builds rather than release ones.

In addition to automatic settings, the user can use manual ones, which will significantly increase the performance of a computer - even a very weak, budget one.

First of all, you should refuse synchronization with Microsoft services, provided that you do not use them all the time. This can be done either with third-party programs, or using service settings in the registry and standard means through the privacy menu, network settings and accounts.

How to reduce the load on an old Windows 10 PC

Before speeding up your laptop on Windows 10, you should save all important data and passwords.

Having saved the data, you can begin to disable all those “goodies” that burden the weak system in terms of hardware. For example, it is advisable to go to the store and click on the account icon and select “Settings” in the menu. In this menu, use the sliders to disable the “Application Updates” options, the “Update apps automatically” option, “Live Tile”, and the “Display products on tiles” option. Then you can postpone “automatic system updates”. To do this, you need to go to “Start” - “Settings” - “Network and Internet”, then select “Wi-Fi” and the network that is currently connected. By clicking on the network, you are taken to its settings and here it is advisable to select the item “Limited connection” - “Set as metered connection”. This way you will reduce Internet consumption on Windows and relieve your computer of unnecessary loads.

For old PCs and weak laptops, constant updates “load” the system too much, it is better to refuse them, and install a light antivirus for security.

Increase in productivity

When answering the question of how to increase the performance of Windows 10, it is worth remembering disk defragmentation. This procedure will improve the performance of even a weak device. To launch it, go to “This PC”, click LMB on the C drive, select “Properties” from the pop-up menu, then “Tools” and “Optimize”. The disk optimization (defragmentation) window will open. By selecting “Analysis”, you can find out the degree of fragmentation of the drive; if it shows more than 10%, it is better to carry out the defragmentation procedure by clicking on the corresponding item (“Optimize”).

Also, constant cleaning of the drive from old files has a positive effect on performance. To do this, go to “Start” - “Settings” - “System” - “Storage” - “Disk C” - “Temporary files”. At this point, select “Temporary files”. If you wish, you can delete data from the Downloads folder and the Recycle Bin by selecting Empty Recycle Bin.

The computer will boot faster if you remove unnecessary applications from the startup menu. To do this, use the keyboard shortcut Control-Alt-Delete to launch the “Task Manager”.

Free laptop acceleration

To guarantee increased performance of a Windows 10 laptop, it is not advisable to use optimizer programs. There are many of them on the Internet, but, as a rule, they only create the appearance of increasing efficiency, but in fact they load the computer even more.

If you decide to speed up your laptop a little, then use standard tools.

To reduce the load on the CPU, you can abandon Metro software by removing “Groove Music”, “News”, “Weather” and other programs. Hanging in the background, they constantly consume system resources. Thus, “Groove Music”, with automatic settings, sends data about the music library to Microsoft servers and tries to find covers (pictures by tags) for each song. Weather and news constantly download information from information portals, and fully automatically. It is also advisable to configure the “Start” itself. For example, if you do not want advertising in it, then on the desktop, click LMB and select “Personalization”, then go to the “Start” tab of the menu that opens, and there disable the “Sometimes show recommendations in the Start menu” slider. In the same “Personalization” in the “Lock Screen” menu, select a local photo on your PC.

Much has been written about how to speed up Windows 10, but most of the advice is based on solutions for older systems. In the new telemetry system, Metro applications require increased data exchange with Microsoft servers, which significantly loads the system. Using the Destroy Windows Spying (DWS) program, we speed up the system by removing unnecessary applications and disabling the update forever (if necessary, you can turn it back on).

In addition, you can remove all spying tasks: prohibit the collection of feedback about programs, the system and general telemetry (data typed on the keyboard, location, content viewed on the network). Using the utility will provide a significant increase in system performance, because a large number of tasks unnecessary for the user will be disabled. If you do not trust the DWS developers, you can disable modules manually through the registry and group policies.

However, remember that only experienced users can increase the productivity of the OS in this way; an untrained person can only worsen the condition of their laptop.

Using “light antiviruses and programs”

If you are interested in how to increase the performance of a laptop (old or budget) without a hardware upgrade, then the best solution would be software optimization. When you have configured everything possible in the system itself, all that remains is to switch to “lighter” programs.

The performance of a computer running Windows OS is greatly influenced by an antivirus program. It ensures that malicious code does not enter the device and cause harm. But modern threats have become more sophisticated, which has led to the complexity of antivirus software. As a result, these programs became clumsy and “gluttonous,” especially during “scanning” (they take up to 80-100% of all system resources). Installing light versions of antivirus software will help make your device's life easier. For example, Avast Free or ESET NOD 32, Avira latest versions (more optimized for Win 10 OS).

Also, to speed up the work of a weak machine, it is advisable to use older or lighter versions of the browser. You can use Edge or Internet Explorer 11, but they sometimes display pages incorrectly and may even freeze. As an alternative, there is SeaMonkey from Mozilla.

Hardware acceleration

It is possible to speed up work on Windows 10 not only with software, but also with hardware, and in some cases this approach is more relevant and reliable. By increasing RAM from 1-2 GB to 3-4 or 6 GB, you can get a significant increase in performance. Good results are obtained by replacing the HDD drive (usually 5400 rpm and with a 16 MB cache) with a faster version with a spindle speed of 7200 or 10,000 rpm and with a 32 or 64 MB cache. You can also install a solid-state SSD drive (preferably the SLC type, it is more reliable and has a longer resource).

With the help of hardware, we increase the performance of Windows 10 several times. No “optimizers” will help you get a significant increase in performance, only an upgrade. Of course, such a procedure is not free, but if we are talking about an outdated laptop with DDR2 or DDR3 memory, then buying an additional 2-4 GB stick is not a very expensive investment. In addition, a modern 64–120 GB SSD has also dropped significantly in price. You can also change the central processor if we are talking about a stationary PC.

Acceleration of the “tens”

Like any operating system, the “ten” has a lot of settings that help the user ideally adjust the system to their needs. By default, the installed software works to satisfy any client. But the “Default” settings are not always beneficial for owners of weak technology. They either have to put up with low performance or try to optimize their systems. Moreover, if there is no money for an upgrade, all that remains is to make the system itself more agile. “Optimizations” have always been around; they have become popular since Windows XP.

Now the easiest way to increase productivity is to disable telemetry services and metro applications that are unnecessary for the Russian user. The English-language “ten” has a voice assistant and the system has deep integration with the Internet.

So how to set up Windows 10 safely and permanently? At a minimum, you should disable the update and install a non-resource-intensive antivirus, discard all built-in programs, and regularly clean the system. If possible, install a 32-bit version of the operating system (it is less resource intensive).

Often, many Windows 10 users encounter the problem that their operating system is too slow. There can be many reasons: from viruses to a large number of simultaneously running applications. Of course, the easiest way to speed up Windows 10 is to simply reinstall the operating system. But not everyone wants to lose their valuable files. In this article, we will talk about ways to optimize Windows 10 for better performance.

Why is Windows 10 slow?

Before speeding up Windows 10, you need to figure out why Windows 10 is slow. You probably noticed the fact that during the initial installation, your computer literally “flies”: all programs and games launch instantly, loading takes a few seconds, etc. But over time, Windows 10 begins to slow down a lot. This happens due to the fact that users load the hard drive with necessary and unnecessary programs, which create a load on the computer's processor. In addition, various visual effects and gadgets on the desktop create additional stress. In order to figure out why Windows 10 is slow, you need to carry out step-by-step diagnostics.

Here are the main reasons why Windows 10 slows down and how to fix them:

  1. High CPU load: This reason is the most common and is due to the fact that the processor does not have enough power for the current application and it begins to freeze. Solutions to the problem: get rid of unnecessary processes, or buy a more modern processor.
  2. Defects or inconsistency of the hard drive: The hard drive has a significant impact on the performance of the computer. Bad sectors lead to system malfunctions. In this case, it is necessary to diagnose the hard drive for bad sectors (for example, using the Victoria HDD program). After diagnostics, if the damage to the disk is significant, it makes sense to replace it; if buying a new disk is not possible, you can try to remove the bad sectors). In the second case, when there is little space left on the hard drive, you must first get rid of unnecessary files, and then defragment the hard drive.
  3. Lack of RAM: one of the most common cases of why Windows 10 slows down. This problem often occurs when there are many applications running on the computer, with a colorful design. It is necessary to turn off startup applications, and also remove all graphical effects of Windows 10. If this does not help, you should think about buying a new RAM stick.
  4. Small page file: The page file is used when there is not enough RAM. The rest of the article will tell you how to increase the paging file.
  5. Viruses: there is nothing to explain here - everything is clear. The surest option to prevent this situation is to avoid downloading files from “left” sites. By the way, often the antivirus loads the system even more than the malware itself.
  6. Overheating of the computer: another reason manifests itself when the computer is not assembled well and there is no normal cooling system. You can read about cooling systems in.
  7. A lot of dust: dust settles on the components of the motherboard and disrupts the computer's heat transfer processes, causing the same overheating.

The impact of Windows 10 bit depth on performance speed

Users themselves often create additional load on the system. For example, you have a laptop with 2 GB of RAM and a 64-bit processor. A user installs the 64-bit version of Windows 10, after which it turns out that the laptop cannot cope with the load. In this case, to speed up Windows 10, it was worth installing the 32-bit version, because it requires a minimum amount of RAM of 1 GB. 2 GB is the recommended volume and with such parameters the laptop will work much faster.

Terminating unnecessary processes in Windows 10

If a large number of simultaneously running applications are running on the computer, it does not have time to cope with the flow of commands and begins to freeze. In order to check the CPU load and get rid of unnecessary applications, you need to go to Task Manager. To do this, press the key combination Ctrl + Alt + Del.

At the beginning, Task Manager will show the currently running applications (Torrent, Yandex Browser). Select an item More details to view all processes.

In the tab Processes we see a list of all running applications. They are conventionally divided into three groups:

  1. Applications – currently running applications
  2. Background processes - applications running in the background
  3. Windows processes – applications required to run Windows 10

You can see the computer boot more clearly in the tab Performance.

Here you can see the CPU load, the amount of RAM used, disk writes, and the current speed of the Ethernet connection. The data is presented graphically as percentages. Open the icon Resource Monitor.

Sort rows by value Average for CPU and see which applications load the processor the most.

Here you need to select all unnecessary processes from this table and terminate them. I’ll say right away that under no circumstances should you disable Windows 10 system services. In the description column they are listed as Host process for Windows 10 services. Below is a list of Windows 10 processes that do not need to be terminated:

  1. explorer – responsible for the operation of the desktop and taskbar
  2. Taskhost – host file
  3. Conhost – host console window
  4. svchost – responsible for launching dynamic DLLs
  5. taskmgr – the task manager itself
  6. msdtc – distributed transaction coordinator
  7. sppsvc – Microsoft software protection platform
  8. smss – Windows Session Manager
  9. csrss – executes client-server
  10. winlogon – login
  11. services – Windows services
  12. spoolsv – Windows print queue
  13. lsass – local user authorization
  14. lsm – local session service
  15. SearchIndexer – search indexer

I will also indicate a list of unnecessary processes, by completing which you can speed up Windows 10:

  1. reader_sl – speeds up Adobe Reader launch
  2. jqs – Java Quick Starter speeds up opening software that works with Java
  3. Osa – Office Source Engine works with office
  4. soffice – works with Open Office
  5. AdobeARM - checks for updates to Adobe software
  6. Jushed - checks for Java updates
  7. NeroCheck – looks for drivers that may cause conflicts
  8. Hkcmd – Maintains Windows hardware
  9. apiptaxx (ati2evxx) – quick access to ATI video card settings
  10. RAVCpl64 – Realter Audio Manager – audio manager, everything will work without it
  11. NWiz – refers to the NVIDIA NView feature
  12. CCC - Catalyst Control Center - belongs to ATI, intended for gamers
  13. winampa – Winamp player process
  14. OSPPSVC - Office 2010 Security Platform
  15. Sidebar - Windows Gadgets
  16. wmpnetwk – search for Windows Media Player

This list can be continued indefinitely, the most important thing is that you must understand which programs are not needed for work.

In order to complete the process, right-click on it and select End the process.

Disable startup of some applications

The most common reason why Windows 10 slows down is a large number of applications that run simultaneously with the system. Many of these applications are simply unnecessary and use up unnecessary computer resources. Disabling unnecessary applications will speed up the loading of Windows 10. In order to remove unnecessary applications from startup, go to the task manager.

Among all the programs, we select unnecessary ones and remove them. To do this, right-click and select Disable.

How do you know which programs can be disabled to speed up Windows 10 loading? First of all, you should look for information about this program on the Internet (we can assume that 90% of programs are not needed at all and only interfere with the system starting). You can definitely turn it off:

  1. Cloud storage
  2. uTorrent, MediaGet, and other programs for downloading
  3. Official software

Disabling unnecessary services

In addition to programs, some services start simultaneously with Windows 10. The Windows developers couldn't know which services you'll need and which you won't, so you'll need to check this list yourself and disable anything you don't need. To find the list of services, press Win+R and enter services.msc, then press OK.

We sort by services by startup type.

To disable a service, right-click on it and select Properties.

After which, in the meaning Startup type choose Disabled. Click OK.

What services can be disabled to speed up Windows 10 startup? Here's a list:

  1. Windows 10 Update - If you need to update your system, it's better to do it manually
  2. Windows Search – few people search for something on their computer
  3. Network Services (KtmRm, Offline Files, IPSec Policy Agent, Computer Browser, NetBIOS Help Module, Server Network Service)
  4. Computer protection (Firewall, Windows Defender) - disable if you already have an antivirus
  5. Adaptive brightness control
  6. IP Ancillary Service
  7. Secondary login
  8. Changed Link Tracking Client
  9. IPSec Key Modules
  10. SSDP detection
  11. Parental control
  12. Error Logging Service
  13. Remote registry
  14. Smart card
  15. Print Manager
  16. Application download service
  17. Bluetooth support
  18. Tablet PC Input Service

Removing unnecessary software

It makes sense to keep on your computer only those programs that you really need. Removing unnecessary software will significantly speed up Windows 10. To go to the Programs and Features window, press the Win + R key combination, then enter appwiz.cpl, click OK.

To remove a program, right-click on it and select Delete.

Cleaning the disk from garbage and unnecessary files

In any operating system, “junk” system files accumulate over a certain period of time. To remove them, you need to go to Start and enter Disk Cleanup.

Select the checkboxes in all sections and click OK.

If you have a small hard drive and it is “filled to the brim,” then you need to clean it of your files. Look at all the files on your computer, you will probably find unnecessary films, TV series, music, and games that you can delete. Be sure to check your Downloads folder, there may be a lot of unnecessary installation files there. Also, you should not store personal files on drive C, because of this the computer will be guaranteed to slow down. It is better to move these files to neighboring drives, such as drive D.

To further clean your computer, you can use programs to speed up your Windows 10 computer, such as CCleaner.

Defragmenting your hard drive

Defragmentation is the redistribution of files and the logical structure of a disk to ensure a continuous sequence of clusters.

Defragmentation allows you to speed up reading and writing files, which means Windows 10 speeds up due to the continuity of disk reading, i.e. without additional displacement of the hard drive head. Defragmentation should be carried out after cleaning the computer.

To defragment the disk, press Win + R and enter dfrgui.

In the window that appears, select system drive C, click Optimize.

Increasing the swap file

A paging file is a special file on the hard drive that is used to expand RAM. The paging file comes into play when there is no space left in the RAM.

The paging file allows you to avoid freezing of many programs. There are no specific values, but it is recommended to choose a file size that is at least twice the size of your RAM. If my RAM capacity is 2 GB, then I set the paging file to 4 GB. To change the paging file size, you need to go to System Properties. We go into my computer, right-click in an empty space and select Properties.

Go to the tab Additionally, select Options.

In the window Performance Options In chapter Virtual memory choose Change.

In the window Virtual memory uncheck the box Automatically select paging file size.

Select an item Specify size and enter the minimum and maximum size of the paging file. Click OK and restart the computer.

Windows 10 Driver Update

Installing the latest drivers gives good results. In general, Windows 10 automatically updates device drivers, but there are exceptions. Let's go to device Manager, to do this, press the key combination Win + R and enter devmgmt.msc.

In Device Manager, right-click on the desired device and select Update drivers.

Disabling visual effects

Well, if your computer is very old, then the last option to “save” it would be to disable all animation in Windows 10. To do this, go to My computer, right-click on an empty space and select Properties.

In the window that appears System choose Advanced System Settings.

Select a tab Additionally and press the button Options in the Performance section.

In the tab Visual effects select an item Provide the best performance.

Other ways to speed up Windows 10

We looked at the main ways to speed up Windows 10. All methods boiled down to optimizing Windows 10 to improve performance, but this is not enough. In addition, I advise you to diagnose your computer, check the hard drive and RAM for errors using special programs. Also check your computer for viruses. Or perhaps your computer is heating up and then you need to clean it from dust, and perhaps improve the cooling system. Well, the very last piece of advice when nothing helps is.

Support the project

Friends, the Netcloud website is developing every day thanks to your support. We plan to launch new article sections, as well as some useful services.

You have the opportunity to support the project and contribute any amount you consider necessary.

Still haven’t gotten a new computer or are you using an old device at home to solve issues related to processing text documents and navigating the pages of the global network? Based on the system requirements that a computer must meet to run Windows 10, almost any PC released over the last decade will run the new OS. Another question is what this work will be like. We'll sort it out with him.

Hardware requirements

In order to install and run Windows 10, you need 16-20 GB of space on the system disk, at least 1024 MB of RAM + a swap file twice the size. It’s difficult to find a central processor with a frequency below 1.1 GHz these days, and you shouldn’t install a “ten” on such a computer. Even if the OS starts, performing the simplest calculations even to ensure the operation of a browser or office program on a weak computer will turn into an unbearable burden for a low-power processor.

It is not worth installing Windows 10 on any weak computer with a single-row (or at least multi-threaded) CPU whose clock speed does not exceed ~2.4 GHz. Although “Ten” is the most optimized operating system, technology does not stand still, and 10-year-old hardware cannot cope with the data flows that circulate in the operating system released in 2015.

As for the drive, an IDE hard drive will only slow down the already lengthy boot process of Windows 10 on an older PC, especially if the drive is significantly fragmented, has a small amount of RAM, and is using a page file.

A video card with a capacity of 64 MB or more will be quite capable of drawing elements of the new tiled interface, if you disable all unnecessary visual effects that heavily load the processor and clog up memory.

Based on official data, almost any computer that supports Windows 7 should be able to handle the “ten” due to the optimization of its code.

Recommendations for working in the Tens environment on outdated hardware

After starting an old computer running Windows 10, problems with drivers may arise, which are often solved using the update center or manually searching and installing missing or problematic software.

Despite the official requirements, an old laptop, if its processor operates at a frequency below 2.4 GHz (although this is far from an indicator of its performance), and there is less than 2 GB of RAM installed on board, the “ten” will run, but will be noticed when running most applications braking, especially if it is a multimedia player, browser or heavier software. Therefore, such a computer is only suitable for solving one single task at a time, and it is not recommended to run several programs on it.

Acceleration "tens"

Despite the optimizations in Windows 10, not every processor can handle processing data from multiple applications. To avoid this, it is necessary. To do this, call the “Task Manager” and prohibit the loading of unnecessary applications with the operating system.

In the “Services” tab, you can disable unnecessary utilities, but only experienced users should do this, being careful.

To improve the performance of your hard drive, you need to defragment the system volume. In the disk properties dialog, go to the “Service” tab, where we click “Optimize”.

In the window that opens, click “Optimize” again and wait for the program to organize the files on the disk.
