What do emoticons mean? How to decipher them? These are the questions guys ask when they first get on social networks. After all, emoticons on social networks, as well as on VK, are a traditional and simple way to express long phrases in one picture.

A person is not always able to express his emotions through familiar words; sometimes even the most beautiful phrases do not reflect the essence of the conversation. And then the thread of the conversation is lost, since the interlocutor on the other side of the screen is also not a telepath and does not read thoughts.
Online correspondence is a special type of conversation in which, just like in a personal meeting, emotions and the ability to express them play a big role. The opponent cannot see facial expressions, hand movements, or hear surprised or questioning intonations. That's when emoticons will become useful.

Any social network provides its users with a truly huge selection of emoticons for all occasions. And we will mainly focus on VK. Since mostly children and teenagers sit there, as well as some young parents, it will be interesting to learn about emoticons on VK.

What do emoticons mean? These symbols help to clearly and harmoniously describe the necessary state, express an emotional reaction and eliminate the lack of vocabulary.

Most social networks, as well as any other resources for interactive communication, have in their arsenal a certain number of so-called hidden emoticons. Most users simply do not know about such a function, since the administration of the communities themselves deliberately does not disseminate such information. And yet – they exist, there are quite a lot of them, and they are absolutely free!

Each emoticon has a specific character code that belongs only to it. Therefore, in order to send such an emoticon to a friend, you need to write this very code into the clipboard, or copy it directly into the message you are sending. So, where can you get these secret signs to diversify your Internet vocabulary with them?

Below in this article the main codes will be given, and by writing them, anyone will receive unique emotions and symbols of actions. It is also important that these emoticons are suitable for sending not only in personal messages, but also for comments on photos, videos and other posts of friends. The standard set of faces that open during communication does not provide such a function. Hidden emoticons can even be added to the status; the main thing is to know what this or that sign means.

Inserting the required symbol into your text is quite easy - the Ctrl+V combination or the “Insert” mouse menu item will help with this.

Just ten years ago, everyone was actively using ICQ. Over time, more modern programs supplanted this method of communication, but the emoticons that were in ICQ have taken root in everyday life and are loved by many. How to get those very first and most positive emoticons? If your skill allows, you can install a special application, for example, “Vkopt” or “vkPlugin”. Each of them has its own catalog of emoticons, about thirty unique images, from good-natured and laughing to angry and sarcastic. In addition to the standard yellow faces, the applications will also delight you with cheerful blue ones.

Of course, emoticons will not replace your live communication with your peers and friends, but they can decorate online dialogues with incredible colors of emotion and understanding. You simply cannot allow communication to be reduced only to the exchange of symbols, even if they are eloquent, and sometimes you are simply too lazy to write a succinct and detailed answer. If writing is completely unbearable, agree with your interlocutor and create a smiley comic, the meaning of which will be accessible only to two. Overusing emoticons is ugly, expressing your opinion using funny symbols is modern and relevant.

How does a sticker from VKontakte differ from the generally accepted emoticon?

Recently, VKontakte has been offering us a lot of new stickers, some of them are free, others will have to be paid for with real money.

What is a sticker? This is a large picture on a given topic: cats, faces, people, fruits and vegetables, cars and others. They are available in the regular emoticons menu, which opens to any user during correspondence. But the site developers, for the most part, provide access to most of the stickers only for money.

Sometimes new thematic collections are released for free access, but really cool and individual ones are not included in this list. These paid stickers can be obtained in three ways: pay for them, ask a friend for stickers as a gift, or download the corresponding plugin. The third method is the most logical and fastest; besides, extensions will allow you to attach stickers not only to messages, but also to add them to comments.

The choice of such programs is so wide that it simply makes no sense to list them all here. Each of us can “Google” and choose an extension that will match his operating system.

If during a conversation in the dialogue field when you click on a sticker from the plugin, only its digital code appears - do not panic; when sending it, the picture itself will be displayed to the interlocutor. This is a peculiar feature of the work of such add-on programs.

This is the decoding of VKontakte emoticons that we offer you. Now you know the meaning of emoticons and in front of you in the tables is their decoding for use on the popular social network VKontakte.

An emoticon is a set of symbols, or icon, that is a visual representation of a facial expression or body position to convey a mood, attitude, or emotion, originally used in email and text messages. The most famous is the smiling face emoji, i.e. smile - :-) .

There is no clear and reliable evidence about who invented the emoticon. Of course, you can point to ancient excavations, finds of various inscriptions on rocks, etc., but these will only be guesses from each of us.

Of course, to say for sure that the emoticon is a modern invention is a little wrong. The use of emoticons can be traced back to the 19th century. Examples of their use can be found in a copy of the American magazine "Puck" from 1881, see example:

Yes, there are a lot of such examples in history, but it is generally accepted that a researcher at Carnegie Mellon University, Scott Fahlman, was responsible for the first digital type of emoticon. He suggested distinguishing serious messages from frivolous ones by using emoticons :-) and :-(. This was all the way back on September 19, 1982. This is especially useful when the sentiment of your message can be misinterpreted.

YES, BUT YOU NEVER ARRIVE ON TIME, ANYWAY.

YES, BUT YOU NEVER ARRIVE ON TIME, ANYWAY. ;-)

However, emoticons did not become so popular, but revealed their potential 14 years later, thanks to a Frenchman who lived in London - Nicolas Laufrani. The idea arose even earlier, from Nicolas’s father, Franklin Laufrani. It was he who, as a journalist for the French newspaper France Soir, published an article on January 1, 1972, under the heading “Take time to smile!”, where he used emoticons to highlight his article. Later he patented it as a trademark and created the production of some products using the smiley. Then a company was created under the brand name Smiley, where father Franklin Loufrani became president, and son Nicolas Loufrani became general director.

It was Nicolas who noticed the popularity of ASCII emoticons, which were widely used on mobile phones, and began developing directly animated emoticons that would correspond to ASCII emoticons consisting of simple characters, i.e. what we now use and are accustomed to calling - smiley. He created a catalog of emoticons, which he divided into categories “Emotions”, “Holidays”, “Food”, etc. And in 1997, this catalog was registered with the US Copyright Office.

Around the same time in Japan, Shigetaka Kurita began designing emoticons for I-mode. But unfortunately, the widespread use of this project never happened. Maybe because in 2001, Laufrani's creations were licensed by Samsung, Nokia, Motorola, and other mobile phone manufacturers, who later began offering them to their users. After that, the world was simply overwhelmed with various interpretations of emoticons and emoticons.

The following variations with smaliks and emoticons became the appearance stickers in 2011. They were created by the leading Internet company from Korea - Naver. The company has developed a messaging platform called - Line. A similar messaging application like WhatsApp. LINE was developed in the months following the 2011 Japanese tsunami. Initially, LIne was created to find friends and relatives during and after natural disasters and in the first year, the number of users grew to 50 million. Afterwards, with the publication of games and stickers, there were already more than 400 million, which later became one one of the most popular apps in Japan, particularly among teenagers.

Emoticons, emoticons and stickers today, after more than 30 years, they have definitely begun to occupy a place in people’s everyday conversations and correspondence. According to research conducted in the United States, it was found that 74 percent of people in the United States regularly use stickers and emoticons in their online communications, sending an average of 96 emoticons or stickers per day. The reason for this explosion in use Emoji is that the creative characters developed by various companies help to express our feelings, help to add humor, sadness, happiness, etc.

The emoticons in the tables will be gradually replenished, so go to the site and look for the meaning of the desired emoticons.

Greetings, friends. Today's post will be not only useful, but also fun - we will talk about emoticons for the VKontakte social network. Funny faces and funny pictures have already become an integral part of any communication on the Internet, and everyone wants to diversify their texts with new and original ones.

The legs of all emojis grow out of text symbols, when it was first invented to indicate emotions using symbols. For me, the first emoticon was the smile symbol, presented in the form of a closing bracket “)”, the expanded version of the smile symbol additionally has a colon “:)” - this spelling is familiar to everyone, almost all online services automatically transform this code into a cheerful smiling face, but it turns out This is not according to the Feng Shui GOST Unicode standard.

Unicode is a standard where all letters, numbers, icons and other printable elements are represented as a unique digital code. This code is understood by any device and displays any symbol correctly. With Unicode, you can include any icon in your text, even if it's not on your keyboard. For example, if you want to write the hieroglyph “乔”, enter its code “𠁒” and you’re done.

The widespread use of emoticons has led to many of their codes being included in Unicode, along with other symbols and characters.

Of course, social networks have become active consumers of emoticons on an industrial scale, VKontakte is no exception. For the convenience of users, so that people do not have to remember and manually write codes to display certain pictures, Contact uses a tooltip - a special drop-down list where you can visually select the desired emoticon and insert it into a message or post on the wall. But this list does not contain all the emoticon codes supported by VK, only the most popular ones (otherwise the list would be too cumbersome).

The rest of the emoticons are, as it were, hidden, but they can be easily used if you know the designation code in Unicode. In addition to dialogues and walls, hidden emoticon codes can also be used in statuses; we will discuss how to make statuses in VK using emoticons below.

I would like to cover the topic of emoji in as much detail as possible, but if this description tires you and you yourself know how to insert everything and you just need to get the necessary codes, go straight to. And for the curious, we will delve a little deeper into history and other interesting points.

What emoticons work in VK and what is special about Emoji

I briefly mentioned the main reason for the appearance of emoticons at the beginning of the post - the need to convey emotions that are difficult or take a long time to describe in words. As soon as the Internet ceased to be a purely business tool and moved into the category of entertainment, the need to express smiles, sadness and much more began to go off scale. It is very difficult to convey what makes communication lively and humane (facial expressions, gestures) through text; not every writer copes with this task perfectly, let alone ordinary people flirting through ICQ.

For example, I can’t imagine how you can convey to your interlocutor by text that I’m winking at him or sticking out my tongue - it will look stupid and won’t produce the desired effect, but a round yellow face with a closed eye or sticking out tongue is just what the doctor ordered.

The peak of the spread of emoticons coincided with the peak of the development of various communication tools - first it was ICQ and Skype, then millions of users of Contact, Odnoklassniki and Facebook were drawn into their networks, now every smartphone owner hangs out on Viber or WhatsApp every day.

Emoticons were not always the usual pictures for us now, but now VK automatically converts the code “:)” into a cheerful face, initially the entire designation was through symbols, the sender of the message wrote a set of squiggles, the recipient received them in the same form, understanding to the best of their knowledge, what is meant. At the initial stage, there were few emoticons; almost all of them were intuitive or easy to remember. If you look closely, all the main emoticons look like a face turned to one side.

  • Smile - ":)"
  • Laughter – “:D”
  • Sadness - ":("
  • Wink – “;)”
  • Indifference – “:-|”
  • Cry – “:"(“
  • Puzzled – “:-\”
  • Amazement – “:-o”
  • Surprise – “=-o”
  • Language – “:P”
  • Kiss – “:-*”
  • Constriction – “:-[“
  • Profanity, swearing – “:-X”
  • Anger – “:-||”
  • Nausea - ":-!"

You probably noticed that the described codes are displayed on VKontakte not as symbols, but as beautiful pictures. This is because the social network is programmed that the combination of symbols corresponds to the desired emoticon, and in each network the image itself will be slightly different in appearance. The reason for the differences is that such emoticons are not standardized characters from Unicode and there is no standard for their display. On the one hand, this allows each service to create creative images with any level of beauty, on the other hand, devices and services that do not support the unofficial encoding of emoticons into pictures will not turn them into pictures at all.

But with Unicode characters the situation is different; emoticons written in this code will be supported everywhere and always. Knowing the emoji codes in the Unicode standard, you can insert absolutely any of the almost 1000 emoticons anywhere in VK, be it in a status or on a wall.

Example:

The Laughter emoticon is informally designated as “:D”; this input format will not be converted into an image everywhere. The standardized Unicode code for this emoji is “😄” and will appear as a 😄 icon on all devices.

But Unicode characters have one peculiarity - they are all simple and black and white. And to make them beautiful and colorful, emoji were invented. Each emoji icon corresponds to a different Unicode character. Essentially these are the same Unicode characters, only displayed differently on devices that support emoji. If there is no emoji support, then emoticons will still be shown, only with simple icons. I probably confused you, it’s better to give an example:

Emoji are emoticons written according to the Unicode standard, but displayed with brighter and more colorful pictures from a special library, if this library is connected to the site or service.

The VKontakte Emoji library is included, so all the emoticons on the social network are colorful and beautiful.

How to put an emoticon in VK status?

The above educational program about emoticons and emojis was carried out for a reason, after it it should become clear to you why writing it in the form of a colon with a bracket does not lead to the appearance of a smile emoticon, but remains in the form of a code - this is not the standard.

Is this a familiar picture?

For the desired emoticon to appear, you need to write not “:)”, but “😄”.

Now step by step.

Step 1. Open the status editor

In order to put an emoticon in the VK status, go to your page (the top item of the panel on the left is “My Page”) and under the name, click the “change status” link:

Step 2. Copy the desired emoticon

An editing field will appear in which you can write any text and add any emoticon. Recently, VKontakte status has introduced support for a tooltip with a standard set of emoticons - if among them there is what you need, select it; if not, and the desired emoticon belongs to the hidden category, then there are two ways:

Step 3. Insert an emoticon into the status text

Both inserting the emoticon code and its Unicode character will work. Just note that the smiley code must begin with an ampersand and a hash and end with a semicolon, otherwise VK will not convert it into an image.

  • Correct: “😄”
  • Incorrect: “128516”

Step 4. Save

How to insert hidden emoticons into messages, discussions and on the VK wall

I will not open America on this issue. Anyone who has used Contact at least once knows that when you place the mouse cursor in the field for writing text on a wall or in the field for discussing a post, an icon appears on the right that reveals a huge list of emoticons - you can choose any one from it.

For personal messages, this list is even longer, as it includes several bookmarks - individual emoticons for VK (some of them are paid, but for reasonable money, although I don’t see the point in paying, especially since you can get any emoticon you need from the Unicode table ).

But, all these lists do not include all emoji characters supported by Unicode. In total, VK shows about 500 different emoticons, the rest (almost the same number) are left out as hidden ones. That is, it’s not that they are hidden, it’s just that the social network considers these emoticons not important and not popular, and therefore does not display them in the gallery, and their work is supported in the same way as in the status line. And the algorithm for inserting hidden emoticons is similar:

All you need to use hidden emoticons is to have their standard codes on hand. Below I will provide a table of codes, so add a link to this article to your bookmarks so that in the future you don’t have to search for codes for the desired pictures for a long time.

Table of emoticon codes for VK

When inserting emoticon codes on VKontakte, it is mandatory to use opening and closing characters - the emoticon begins with () and ends with (;). In other places you can find codes in their pure form, without these symbols, the codes themselves are correct, but they will not work in VK if you do not add the indicated symbols.

Some emoticons look like squares when inserted, but don’t be alarmed, after saving and updating the page, VK will convert them into beautiful pictures.

For comfort when searching for the desired picture, all emoticons are grouped into semantic sections, to immediately go to the desired section, click on the name of the required category from the list:

Social networks, actively developing along with the spread of the Internet, have created a new style of communication. Correspondence is no longer complete without a set of stylized pictures and emoticons that show the user’s emotions. The emoji set is constantly expanding and has about 1,500 different symbols. In this article we will tell you what VK emoticon codes are and how to use them correctly.

VK, Unicode and emoticons

Using the universal international encoding Unicode allows you to ensure the same display of web pages on any device. The first emoji were included in the general table in 2010. On VKontakte they are included as a separate block on the “Messages” tab.

With their help, you can create a beautiful status, enhancing the posted phrase with emotional overtones.

However, when you are about to post, you will not find emoticons in the editor. The text can be beautifully designed using different fonts and citations, but it is impossible to directly add emotions to it.

There are several options for solving the problem and the use of codes is one of the most popular.

Adding Emotions

The easiest option is to use ready-made emoticons. Both a general Unicode character table and one specially created for VK are suitable.

Unicode summary table

Unicode documentation is freely available and anyone can use it by opening the appropriate page.

The table shows options for displaying emoticons on different devices. To insert into VK you need to use only the “Browser” column. The selected symbol must be copied and pasted into the desired place in the post. In other columns they may look more beautiful, but they will be inserted like pictures.

Ready-made emoticons for VK

The K94 project offers a ready-made set of emoji for VK. The description of each symbol contains a code that is accepted by the social network and recognized as an emoticon.

The principle of use is different from the Unicode table. If you simply copy a symbol, it will be inserted onto the page as a picture. Click on the one you need to call up its description.

Copy the icon indicated by the arrow or the code taken in the frame. A digital designation inserted onto a VK page is immediately converted into an emoticon. Some of them, which were used in the initial Unicode sets, become black.

Emoticon code

If desired, any emoticon that is not included in the ready-made sets, but contained in Unicode, can be added independently.

  1. We go to a page containing a code table in which all the official emoji are presented. The marked field contains standard hexadecimal emoji values that represent hyperlinks. Click on any one to open full information about the selected symbol.

Move the switch to the position indicated by the arrow. In the “Code” field, the hexadecimal value will change to decimal, which is a familiar set of numbers. This is the designation used on VKontakte. Copy it and go to your page.

As we saw in the previous section, numbers are limited to the characters in front and behind. The ampersand “&” and the hash “#” are placed at the beginning. Then comes the value we extracted, and everything ends with a semicolon. We insert the digital code and add the necessary characters in front without spaces. In most cases, after entering a hash mark, the test block will immediately transform into the selected emoji, which has a heart instead of eyes, and closes it with a “;” no need to.

Thus, new emoticons can be added to your page as soon as they are approved by the Unicode Consortium. This means that you will be the first to place some “tricky” fakyu symbol.

Finally

For users who lack the standard set, there are browser extensions like the Emojiplus package. With their help, you can add animated cats, New Year stickers and current memes to VK.

Video instructions

To learn more about how emoticon codes work, watch the video below.

Sending emoticons has long become commonplace in all communication services, including VK. They convey emotions well to their interlocutor, can emphasize a certain thought or reaction, or replace words.

Emoji are included in the Unicode font set, as are numbers and letters. Standardized Unicode emoticons are called Emoji. But different systems may also have their own sets of emoticons.

To send an emoticon on VKontakte, in most cases it is enough to do a couple of simple steps:

This way the smiley will be added to the text along with the message. You can not only send them via PM, but also add them to comments and wall posts. for this you need:

  1. Start writing a comment so that the input line opens.
  2. Click on the kolobok icon in the upper right corner of the dial bar
  3. Select the appropriate emoticon and left-click on it.
  4. After adding it to the comment, click the Send button.

If you are writing a post on the wall or commenting on something, then regular emoticons can be placed along with the text, but stickers (larger images in sets) are sent only separately and will be sent immediately after you click on them with the left mouse button.

The set of emoticons and stickers in the mobile version of the VK website and in applications for mobile phones based on Android and iPhone does not differ from those in the web version of the site for a personal computer.

You cannot update emoticons or remove any instances from the standard set. It is also impossible to flip or otherwise edit the emoticons in the list. You can only purchase new sets of stickers or update the entire application, after which changes will occur in the list.

Frequently used ones are shown first in the list of all emoticons, for user convenience.

An alternative way to insert an emoticon

If you have problems with the VK interface:

  • you can’t find the picture you need in the set;
  • I’m used to typing quickly, and I don’t want to look away from the mouse,

You can write a smiley code in the message. You can do it like this:

You can transfer the ones you like most to a notepad on your desktop, so that next time you can open it and quickly paste it or memorize it by heart, inserting emotions into the text without looking up from the keyboard.
