Hi all. Recently I encountered a small problem. It all started with the fact that when opening the drive jammed and opened only after several attempts. This went on for a couple of months - there was no time to understand the reason, and, to be honest, there was no desire. In the end, it all ended with the DVD drive no longer opening at all and then completely disappearing from the system (although it was detected in the BIOS).

At first, I didn’t connect these two phenomena in any way (okay, the drive doesn’t open, but it should be determined) and decided that the recent update of the Daemon Tools program was to blame. To check, I booted under the second system (well, I have two of them - one on, the second on a traditional one), but the disk was not detected in it either. Everything is clear - the problem is in the drive itself.

What to do if the DVD drive does not open?

The first thing you can do is use the manual opening mechanism of the drive. To do this, take a knitting needle with a diameter of 1 mm (a needle, a pin) and insert it into the hole on the front panel of the drive until it stops and press a little, the drive should open slightly, after which you can safely pull it out by hand. In my case it looks like this:

But this method is quite inconvenient to use, and in some cases this requires partial disassembly of the case, so let’s move on to finding out the reason why the drive does not open.

The warranty on the drive has already expired for six months, so it can be disassembled for inspection and cleaning (maybe a gear is jammed). Disassembling the case involves unscrewing four screws and removing the front panel. To remove the panel (release the latches), an unnecessary plastic card is useful:

But the inspection did not reveal any jambs - everything was in perfect condition. I decided to see how everything was working and connected the disassembled drive, tried to open and close it - everything worked. If you have the opposite situation (the drive does not open), then first check the condition of the electric motor and drive belt:

If it is stretched and slips, replace it or rub it with rosin (temporary measure). If the electric motor does not work, then you have a direct route to a service or store. Decide for yourself where exactly - sometimes it’s cheaper to buy a new one than to repair an old one. This unit turned out to be working for me and I continued my search. I won’t bore you with listing all the manipulations that I performed, let’s move on to the result. The reason turned out to be that the opening mechanism of the DVD drive could not open the halves of the spindle that spins the disk; between these halves the disk is fixed due to the attraction of a neodymium magnet from the upper part of the spindle to the lower one. You can remove the upper half practically without disassembling the drive; to do this, remove the protective metal plate at the top of the drive:

Then pick up the plastic disk and remove it:

If after this the DVD drive opens and closes normally, then the easiest way to fix the problem is to leave the disc in the drive, with the working side up (this way the drive will not see it and will not start every time the system starts). This method did not suit me, because... The growing hacker son often uses a DVD-ROM and can easily close it empty, but because of this, he doesn’t really want to disassemble the computer every time. Therefore, I went a similar, but slightly different route, to increase the air gap (reduce the adhesion force of the magnets) between the spindle halves I used regular electrical tape:

The quantity is determined experimentally. In my case, two layers were enough.

I hope this note helped you if the drive does not open.

In addition, there is one useful feature that will allow you to open and close the drive without touching it (you can show off in front of your friends). For me, the drive button is not visible at all and this sometimes helps me. These are two files, double clicking on which will take the DVD drive to the desired action. You can download them by clicking on the link.

And finally the video

And finally the video

Just a couple of years ago, having a disk drive in a desktop or laptop computer was a given. Today, manufacturers no longer equip computers with various CD, DVD and even Blu-ray drives. But still, a large number of products in which they are installed are still in use.

The tray does not come out

The most common problem that occurs with a drive is that the disc tray does not eject. The drive stops working normally, the disc cannot be pulled out, and nothing happens when the eject button is pressed. In order to correct this situation without contacting service, let’s find out why the disk drive on the computer does not open.

The reasons for this may be either wear and tear on the mechanisms of the device itself, or the carrier itself being made of low-quality materials. The disk changes its position or even breaks, which mechanically prevents the carriage from moving out.

The button doesn't work

At first glance, it seems that the problem is very serious and it is not clear what to do. If the drive does not open, simple manipulations will help. First, you need to make sure that the cause of the breakdown was a stuck carriage. To do this, we try to press the button. If the button is working, then we will hear characteristic sounds in the drive. Next, let's check using the installed operating system.

To open the drive, you need to use the Tab, Enter, and arrow keys on your keyboard. You need to go through the desktop to the “My Computer” or “This Computer” folder and find the device designated as a disk drive. Using a special key on the keyboard, call up the menu and click “Extract”.

If the method works, then the button in the drive is faulty and needs to be replaced. If the drive won't open, there's no need to panic. Each drive has a so-called emergency tray opening. Look closely at your drive and you should be able to see a small hole through which you can open the device.

To do this, you need to insert a thin object of suitable diameter into it, be it a needle or an unbent paper clip. With a little force, the carriage drive can release the lock by throwing the tray forward a little. Taking it by hand, you need to pull it until it opens completely. Once you have removed the foreign objects, all you have to do is press a button or manually return the carriage to its original state.

Check with a few presses of the button to see if the opening problem has been resolved. If not, you need to try another method. If the drive does not open, it will have to be removed from a personal computer or other equipment where he stands. After the drive is removed, it must be carefully disassembled in order to eliminate the damage, and at the same time carry out preventive maintenance. To do this you will need the following tools:

  • medium Phillips screwdriver,
  • dust brush,
  • medical enema,
  • soft fabric,
  • silicone-based lubricant,
  • tweezers,
  • lens cleaner.

How to disassemble the drive

If the drive still does not open, and the previous methods did not help, I'll have to take it apart. To do this, the drive is turned over and four screws are unscrewed in the corners with a Phillips screwdriver. The bottom cover is removed, and we are faced with electronic control boards. Now the goal is to remove the top cover. To remove it, you must again open the tray through the emergency hole and pull it out manually. Then, pressing the latches from the sides and bottom, you need to remove the decorative panel. After this, the top cover will be removed.

Inspect the drive and remove all foreign objects, if there are any. Assess the condition of the gears, belt, tray, stepper motor, that is, everything that can affect the opening or closing of the drive. If nothing is visible visually, try manually pushing the carriage in and out. While the device is disassembled, it makes sense to lubricate the guides, and at the same time clean the device itself and the lens.

Nothing helped, so the problem is not mechanical, but electronic. You will have to repair the control board or maybe even replace the motor, but this happens extremely rarely. Reassembling the device in reverse order will not be difficult. You need to install it back into the equipment and check its functionality.

Even if there is an urgent need to remove the disk, but it is stuck in the device and does not want to come out, and the computer is not connected to electricity, then you can quickly remove it using a paperclip or needle. If you suddenly cannot solve the problem yourself, then it is advisable to evaluate the economic component of the planned repair of the product.

Laptops and desktop computers, like other equipment, tend to fail. Breakdowns can be completely different. In one case, you cannot do without the intervention of a specialist or a visit to a specialized center; in another, you can try to find the cause of the PC malfunction and fix the problem yourself.

One of the problems that users often encounter is that the laser disc reader (CD-ROM, disk drive) refuses to open. The reasons may be different:

  • Failure of the electronic board;
  • Mechanical problems;
  • An incorrectly inserted or cracked laser disc inside the device.

Sometimes the reason is completely unclear, but it’s worth trying to open the drive yourself. To this end, you can try the following:

  • Use the functionality of the software;
  • Use a thin paperclip or needle;
  • Disconnect the wires from the device and reconnect them;
  • Disassemble the drive in order to find a possible breakdown problem.

Using system options

The first step is to click on the “My Computer” shortcut, then do the following:

  1. On the drive icon, right-click on the manipulator (mouse);
  2. Click on the “Extract” button in the context menu.

In this way, you can try to force the drive to open “forcibly”.

Opening the drive with a paper clip

If the first attempt was unsuccessful, we arm ourselves with a needle or paper clip. For what? There is a miniature hole on the front panel of any drive that reads laser discs. You need to insert a thin metal object in the form of a paper clip or a needle into it, pressing all the way, which will force the device to open.

Disconnecting the wires

If, using a couple of previous options, it was not possible to achieve the desired effect, you should try the following:

If all else fails

The last attempt is to disassemble the drive. You might be able to find some kind of problem. If all is in vain, there are two options.

PC users experience computer malfunctions from time to time, and sometimes they occur when using disks.

In this article we will tell you in detail how to open the drive if it does not open on the computer.

Causes

The problem in question may have various causes:

  • an old disk with many scratches was inserted into the drive;
  • there are system problems;
  • the magnetic latch is stuck;
  • the rubber belt with which the disc tray extends has become loose;
  • the gears in the disk drive have gone wrong (usually with bent teeth); when you try to open the tray, you hear a grinding noise;
  • Dust has accumulated in the drive

It is impossible to determine the reasons during an external examination. In most situations they are mechanical in nature. To clarify, it is recommended to disassemble the drive and perform a thorough diagnosis.

But if you only need to open the drive, try solving the problem yourself first.

Standard options

Use simple methods:

  • There is a button on the drive itself, press it several times, sometimes this helps and the device continues to operate as before. If you do not get the desired result, move on to the next method;
  • turn off your computer. Wait a few minutes and turn it on again. Rebooting the PC has the same effect. The disk drive might not open because it was frozen. Restarting it will give the chance of it “sagging”;
  • no changes? We remove the PC tray using the operating system. Open the “My Computer” shortcut, right-click on the drive sign, this will bring up the context menu, then click on the “Eject” function.

Is everything still the same? We do not despair, although the task is gradually becoming more difficult.

Hover your mouse over the working area of the screen, open the menu, find the “Create” line and select “Shortcut”.

A dialog box will open in which you need to indicate the location of the object.

We print the phrase “full path to this file.” We enter the name of the utility nircmd.exe, the cdrom open command, and indicate the drive letter in the system. Basically, it will be the letter E.

If this utility is not installed on your computer, download the appropriate version for your PC from the Internet.

The label must be given a name and placed in a certain place so that it can be easily operated in the future. Now double-click on the shortcut, the drive tray should open.

Disconnecting wires

The planned effect was not achieved? Despite the obstacles, we continue to work out all the options for solving the problem “How to open a disk drive if it does not open on the computer.” What should be done:

  • Turn off your PC completely. Using a screwdriver, remove the cover from the side of the system unit;
  • lightly press the panel and move it towards the back of the PC;
  • remove the drive panel;
  • now you need to find the cable connecting the drive to the computer;
  • disconnect the power wires from the drive. If the PCs were recently hit or dropped, they may have become disconnected;
  • wait a few minutes. Connect again, check if they are coming off and how tightly they fit. Start your PC and try again to open the device;
  • The problem may come from the power supply itself. Then you should replace it, always with the computer turned off.

Driver check

The drive will not open if there are errors in the functioning of the operating system itself. We try to update, and if that fails, reinstall the drive drivers.

We perform the following steps sequentially:

  • find the “My Computer” shortcut on the workspace and click on it;
  • from the list of functions select the line “Properties”;
  • in the window that opens, click on the “Hardware” section, and then on “Device Manager”;
  • a list of all devices installed on your computer will appear on the screen;
  • we find our drive, for example, under the designation “Optiarc DVD RW AD-71915 ATA Device”, click the mouse, a selection menu will open;
  • select the “update driver” function.

We try to open the drive again. No dynamics? Then let's start reinstalling the drivers. Insert the model name of your drive into the Internet search bar and download the driver. Let's try again.

Radical measures

None of the suggested options helped? It's time to move on to radical measures. In addition, it is justified if a disk with important information is locked in the drive.

Arm yourself with the means at hand: a thin but strong wire, an unbent paper clip, a pin or a regular sewing needle.

  • Find a small hole on the drive housing; it is always located on the front panel on different models;
  • insert a pin into it at a right angle and carefully push it forward;
  • as soon as you feel that the pin has encountered an obstacle, lightly press it until the tray extends slightly;
  • pull it up with your fingers and pick up the disk;
  • there is a possibility that it broke into separate pieces, then try to remove them all.

Now you can push the drive back into place, restart the PC and check the operation of the drive. This is the most effective way to open. It will also work when the computer is turned off. So, for example, in a situation where the electricity is turned off, and the disk must be taken out.

Further actions

The result is finally achieved, the compact is removed, but the drive still does not function in normal mode. This means that the problem is much more serious than initially thought and cannot be avoided without consulting a specialist.

Therefore, we take the computer to a service workshop or buy a new drive and ask friends who repair computers to replace it.

If you are ready to do the work yourself, then just find a suitable video on the Internet and start replacing.
But in this case it will be a completely different story...
