Hello colleagues. In this article I will try to cover as fully as possible the issue of choosing the ideal mice for designers.
1. The main criterion is comfort: types of grip and bodies
Computer miceare designed strictly taking into account the type of grip. There are 3 types of cases in total:
- under finger grip;
- under palm grip;
- universal.
Razer Naga is a finger-grip mouse with interchangeable attachments.
The first step is to decide exactly what type of grip you are used to holding the mouse, because this largely determines how comfortable it will be for you to work with the mouse. When working with a mouse of an unusual design, your hand will get very tired, no matter how technically advanced this mouse is.

2. “Branding”
Approach the question of the manufacturer carefully - take this aspect into account, but do not rely on the brand blindly.
There are significantly more individual features of the hand structure than there are models in the line of any individual manufacturer, and our task is to choose something that will be truly comfortable for us to work with, and not something that is “trendy.” In addition, any company has successful products, and there are “not so good” ones.
At the same time, it cannot be denied that some companies are truly leaders in the mouse-building industry and their products stand out on the market in terms of their quality, functionality and technical characteristics.
I will highlight 4 companies:
- Razer is a legendary company that was one of the first to produce peripherals for gamers. However, lately, “there is an opinion, and not just mine,” that the company has become a little arrogant and is resting on the laurels of previous achievements, and therefore some of their products turn out to be damp; But despite this, the raiser still produces very decent mice;
- SteelSeries is a direct competitor to Razer, which has a number of its own distinctive features: the design of the mice is less aggressive and more versatile. In terms of design, the emphasis is on minimalism and very interesting colors - you can choose the color of the mouse in a fairly wide range, which can be very interesting for people in creative professions;
- Cyborg is a company that has released only one mouse concept, but it is truly unique;
- Logitech is a company, in my opinion, less trendy in terms of “show-off”, but over the years it has managed to win a large number of loyal fans not with words and marketing, but with “deeds” - the quality and functionality of its products. Although the design of her mice is not suitable for all people.
3. Technical characteristics: sensor type, response time, DPI
- DPI (dots per inch) aka CPI - sensor resolution, responsible for the accuracy of the mouse. This is the most important parameter for the designer. The bigger it is, the better. The larger your monitor, the more CPI you need. For more information about this parameter and its connection with mouse sensitivity, read this article;
- Mouse sensor type - Today, most mice have an optical sensor. Laser (the one that glows) is practically no longer produced;
- Mouse response time — is set by the frequency with which the computer polls the mouse. This parameter is necessary for more correct operation of the “mouse acceleration” function. More details about this in the corresponding article (see contents)
4. Mouse functionality
There are different approaches to this issue. Some people like to use mice for MMORPG games. These mice have a variety of buttons and customizable profiles for different applications - you can switch tools and operate them with one hand, while freeing up some keyboard shortcuts.
The idea is not bad, but in practice it is impossible to fit many buttons on a mouse without compromising ergonomics, which is why the design is not suitable for everyone. It is especially difficult for people with large hands - for them, a mouse with a minimum number of buttons, but of a normal size, is much more comfortable.
5. Scroll
This mouse detail is especially important for the designer, because... We use scrolling much more intensively than gamers or office workers.
Zooming, positioning, rotation along axes in 3D applications - one scroll is responsible for all this.
Therefore, it is worth considering that not all gaming products are designed for design workload. Pay special attention to
- presence of play in the wheel fastening;
- uniform force when turning;
- presence/absence of squeaks, crackles and other sounds;
- convenience of mechanical “cut-offs” for scrolling the wheel;
- dimensions and functionality of the wheel. If you often use the mouse wheel in your work (3D Max, Blue, etc.), then low and wide wheels are better for you.
7. Wired or wireless
It's simple - everyone must weigh a number of factors for themselves and decide what outweighs.
Wireless mice
- heavier;
- require charging and this process is implemented differently on different models (not always successfully);
- do not have a wire that can get in the way on the table
Wired mice
- lighter (you can make it specially heavier if weights are provided);
- do not need charging;
- Problems with wires can be solved using special holders.
8. High-quality rug
Some people underestimate this “device”. A high-quality mat significantly improves mouse performance:
