So, the new version of the Windows 8.1 operating system is available for download from the Microsoft website and will begin appearing on store shelves today.

You may remember that, among other improvements and innovations, this version of Windows improved support for tablets with screens smaller than 10 inches. In addition, while we were waiting for its release, Intel released new cost-effective Atom Bay Trail mobile processors with higher performance and lower power consumption, which are ideal for creating compact Windows tablets.

Device manufacturers have taken advantage of the opportunity, resulting in several smaller, lighter Windows tablets with longer runtimes that do not have a fan to cool the processor.

And today I want to remind you about the first Windows 8.1 tablets equipped with 8-inch screens. In addition to running the latest operating system from Microsoft, they should all come pre-installed with the Microsoft Office 2013 Home and Student suite.

Acer Iconia W4

The Acer Iconia W4 is actually Acer's second Windows 8 tablet with an 8-inch screen. The first was the Iconia W3, which was smaller than any Windows tablet available at the time of its release, but which had disadvantages such as small screen viewing angles and mediocre performance.

The new model of Acer's compact Windows tablet is equipped with a quad-core Intel Atom Z3740 Bay Trail processor and has 2 GB of RAM, up to 64 GB of internal memory, a 5-megapixel main camera and a 2-megapixel front camera.

Also, it has a slot for MicroSD cards, a micro-HDMI port, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth adapters, as well as a GPS receiver.

The tablet is equipped with an 8-inch screen based on an IPS matrix with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels display, which has better color reproduction and larger viewing angles than the TN screen of the Iconia W3. The thickness of its case is about 10.7 mm, and its weight is 397 grams.

Acer Iconia W3 is expected to be available for purchase this month. The price of the tablet with 32 GB of internal memory is $330, and the 64 GB model will cost $380.

Dell Venue Pro 8

Dell's first 8-inch tablet with Windows 8.1 on board should be released today, October 18, with a starting price of $300. The new product is equipped with a quad-core 1.33 GHz Intel Atom Z3740 processor, 2 GB of RAM and up to 64 GB of internal memory.

Similar to the Acer Iconia W4, the Dell Venue 8 Pro has an 8-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. But one thing that makes it stand out is its support for an active digital pen.

The tablet is equipped with a 2 × 2 MIMO Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n adapter, a Bluetooth 4.0 module, and also has optional support for HSPA + 4G LTE networks.

In addition, the new product has a slot for MicroSD memory cards, a 5-megapixel camera, a 1.2-megapixel webcam and a 4820 mAh battery.

The tablet has a body with a thickness of 8.9 mm and its weight is 398 grams.

The price of the Dell Venue 8 Pro in the initial configuration (without LTE modem and active digital pen included) will be $299, and the tablet will be available for purchase in November of this year, 2013.

Lenovo Miix2

Lenovo Miix2 is another tablet with an 8-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels and 2 GB of RAM. Notice a trend?

The new product from Lenovo will be equipped with a quad-core Intel Atom processor, 32, 64 or 128 GB flash drive and has a MicroSD slot in case you want to use removable media

This tablet is slightly lighter than its competitors (about 350 grams) and just a little thinner than the Dell tablet (8.35 mm).

The Lenovo tablet has a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front camera. The company will offer an additional stand case with a capacitive stylus included.

The Lenovo Miix2 is expected to be available at the end of October for around $299 and up.

Toshiba Encore

I think you can already imagine the main characteristics of the Toshiba Encore: an 8-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels, a quad-core Intel Bay Trail chip, and at least 32 GB of internal memory.

But this tablet stands out from its competitors in some ways. First of all, this is an 8-megapixel camera, and also for some reason a more massive and thick body (10.7 mm and 482 grams)

In addition, the technical specifications of Toshiba's compact Windows tablet include a 2-megapixel webcam, MicroSD card slot, MicroHDMI output, MicroUSB port, GPS receiver and Wi-Fi 802.11 A/B/G/N adapter.

Toshiba Encore is expected to be available for purchase in November. The price of the tablet will start at $330.

The peak of popularity of tablets has passed; modern smartphones are practically not inferior in capabilities and characteristics to small computers. Nevertheless, such devices are still in demand, primarily due to their compactness and maximum proximity to a regular PC. This is especially true for gadgets with the Windows operating system. The user does not need to adapt to new conditions; he works in a familiar environment.

We present to your attention a selection of the best Windows tablets in different categories. The choice is based not only on capabilities and technical characteristics, but also on reviews from real users.

The best inexpensive tablets for Windows: budget up to 20,000 rubles.

4 Haier HV103H

Best price
Country: China
Average price: 11,730 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.3

This model pleases not only with its excellent technical characteristics, but also with the most affordable price. This is the most inexpensive device on the Windows platform. At the same time, it has something to brag about: 64 GB of internal memory, this is actually not that much, but there is a slot for a memory card, however, its volume should not exceed 64 GB. But the RAM is only 2 GB, against the backdrop of a good quad-core processor, this is not the best indicator. It will no longer be possible to run resource-intensive applications and games, but to work in the mail-documents connection, it’s better not to.

As the owners write in their reviews, this is an excellent tablet for the money. The keyboard connects easily and works flawlessly. It performs well in both laptop and tablet modes. The Haier HV103H is a great workhorse at a budget price. The battery lasts for 8 hours of full use. This model deserves a decent start in the ranking of the best.

The tablet connects to the Internet not only on the WiFi network, but also has a slot for a SIM card. Thanks to this, you don’t have to look for an access point to work, which increases mobility. The device has a processor with good performance; the Intel Atom x5-Z8300 ensures excellent operation of all programs designed for Windows OS. At the same time, high mobility is maintained. The model is very light weight (only 580 g), making it convenient to carry. In addition, users note the build quality. According to them, the case does not crunch or play. The IPS display has a resolution of 1920 x 1080, it pleases with excellent viewing angles and color reproduction. The owners only complain about the low brightness; it is not comfortable to use on a sunny day.

The device is equipped with a fairly capacious battery, it provides a high level of autonomy for the tablet. Thanks to the quad-core Intel Atom x5 Z8350 processor with a clock frequency of 1440 MHz, the device allows you to play games with average resource intensity and low system requirements. There is only 2 GB of RAM, which is not enough for full-fledged work, so users often notice freezes.Otherwise, this is an excellent solution; the Lenovo Miix 320 deservedly participates in the ranking of the best Windows tablets.

The domestic manufacturer has pleased users with an excellent tablet, which has taken a leading position in our ranking of the best Windows devices. That is, the interface completely replicates the computer’s working environment. The kit includes an external keyboard, which can be detached if desired. Best protection against external influences
Country: Japan
Average price: RUB 186,103.

The current model is not afraid of falls, scratches, dust, moisture and sudden temperature changes. The device is lightweight and has a small diagonal (7 inches). The gadget is not suitable for heavy games and complex calculations. The fast built-in SSD and Intel Core i5 processor have excellent characteristics, but cannot fully realize their potential due to the lack of good cooling. Under heavy loads, overheating occurs and operating frequencies drop sharply. According to user reviews, the speaker makes an excellent impression, which is surprisingly loud for a waterproof model. Among other things, satisfied customers praise the tablet’s quietness and high-quality passive cooling system, power and good battery life. Thanks to a fairly capacious battery, the model holds a charge for up to 13 and a half hours when watching videos.

The best transformable tablets for Windows

This category includes the best Windows devices, which are required to include a keyboard and are more similar in technical characteristics to laptops. They delight with high performance, a full-fledged operating system and higher autonomy.

3 Acer Switch 7 i7 16Gb 512Gb

Good build quality. Great screen
Country: Taiwan
Average price: 127820 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.3

This device, in terms of its technical characteristics, can compete even with full-fledged computers. Firstly, it is a high-performance Intel Core i7 8550U processor with a clock speed of 1800 MHz. Secondly, 16 GB of RAM (the largest figure). Together with the rest of the “stuffing” they form an almost omnipotent gadget. But this also leads to an expected drawback - the battery lasts for 4 hours of battery life, despite the manufacturer’s assurances of a ten-hour period.

If you look at user reviews, you can see that the model is more than worthy. According to them, the tablet is compact and lightweight, has a convenient folding support for adjusting the tilt angle, the keyboard is equipped with a switchable backlight, the screen is high-quality and meets all requirements. The absence of a cooler eliminates unnecessary noise, the sound from the speakers is clear and quite loud. The gadget objectively covers all the needs of even the most demanding user. Rating (2019): 4.5

The high performance of the model is explained by the excellent amount of RAM, reaching 4 GB, and a fast processor with 4 cores and a good frequency. Loud speakers with stereo-like sound, a rich screen and headset support, a gyroscope and Miracast wireless technology make the tablet one of the best devices in the mid-segment.

According to numerous reviews, a high-quality, stable keyboard is one of the key advantages of the model. Unlike analogues, it is firmly attached to the device and reliably holds it in the desired position. At the same time, the tablet itself is quite light if you use it without a keyboard.

1 ASUS Transformer Mini T103HAF 4Gb 64Gb

High processor power
A country: Taiwan (manufactured in China)
Average price: 25,730 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.7

Owners in their reviews vying with each other to claim that a better model for working on Windows cannot be found. The device is light in weight, only 620 grams, making it comfortable to use in your hands while holding it, and not just with a rest when the keyboard is connected. Some users even claim that this is a full-fledged laptop, which, thanks to some features, was called a tablet. This is an excellent solution for work and undemanding games. A very powerful processor is installed here, and it is the “Atom” that shows itself best in such devices.

Users also note its neat appearance. The execution is good, everything is organic and of high quality. The battery provides excellent autonomy; you can safely use it for work that requires constant movement and not be afraid that the tool will run out at the wrong moment. The only negative is the lack of mobile Internet support. For full operation, you need to find a WiFi access point. But this problem is present in most similar devices on Windows, so ASUS Transformer Mini deservedly took its place in the ranking of the best.

Many users know about the existence of Windows 8 tablets, but few understand what they should base their choice of a Windows gadget on, what features they have and who they are suitable for. All Windows 8 devices are divided into two categories.

Special OS edition

Windows 8 RT OS is discussed here. A typical representative in this category is the Microsoft Surface RT tablet.

This operating system was specially designed for gadgets based on ARM processors. Similar processors are installed on Android and iOS tablets. This type of gadget is only compatible with applications specifically designed for it. However, it is impossible to replace this version of Windows 8 with another.

Before choosing such a gadget, you should note that none of the programs familiar to a PC will work on it. The developers' plans include optimizing popular applications for Windows 8 RT, but when this will happen is unknown. Sooner or later, the boundary between applications for different Windows 8 operating systems will be erased.

Microsoft Surface RT - special OS edition

The advantage of Windows RT tablets is that they come pre-installed with a suite of office applications optimized for touch screens. That is, you can avoid their additional purchase.
Otherwise, this version of the OS is identical to other versions of 8.

Characteristic features of devices with a special OS edition

  1. The tablet is equipped with an nVidia Tegra 3 ARM processor.
  2. The weight corresponds to the weight of similar Android and iOS devices with the same screen size.
  3. The device can operate on battery power for at least 10 hours with an average load.
  4. Each device has an IPS matrix.
  5. All devices are equipped with a passive cooling system.
  6. Each device has at least one USB 2.0 configuration port.
  7. Features of gadgets on Windows 8 RT -
  8. 2 GB of RAM is standard for an RT device.

Purpose

Who should choose a Windows 8 RT device? For those who use the device to surf the Internet, for simple games and watch videos. Built-in office applications allow you to work with some reservations. If you need more advanced programs, choosing this gadget does not make sense.

Full OS version

Devices running Windows 8 Core and Windows 8 Professional are covered here. This OS is identical to the computer versions. When deciding which Windows 8 tablet to choose, note that this version of the OS allows you to work with all applications developed for PC. Moreover, not only versions for 8 are available, but also for previous editions of Windows.

Intel Atom Processor

A typical representative here is the Acer iconia tab w510.

The Intel Atom processor has become a breakthrough in the development of mobile devices. It has sufficient performance, and all the shortcomings of previous versions of processors have been eliminated.

A gadget equipped with the new Atom provides almost the same level of comfort during operation as a PC. This applies mainly to office applications and programs like Photoshop. Games, of course, can freeze, but which gadget is guaranteed to provide high-quality playback?

Interestingly, the new Atom processors have achieved high energy efficiency. Devices with this processor can work autonomously in the same way as their Android or iOS counterparts. The price for this opportunity is a weak video adapter. Choosing a tablet with Intel Atom should not be made by teenagers and people who spend a lot of time playing games.

Otherwise, these are full-fledged computers. By connecting a mouse and keyboard, you can get a completely working tool. In practice, this type of device is a more modern version of netbooks.

Characteristics

  1. Equipped with an Intel Atom z2760 x86 processor.
  2. The weight corresponds to the weight of analogues on other operating systems with a similar screen diagonal.
  3. Battery life from 8 hours.
  4. All devices are equipped with an IPS matrix.
  5. Passive cooling.
  6. This is an absolutely silent device with eMMC flash memory.
  7. There must be at least one USB 2.0 port.
  8. Quick transition to sleep mode and back.
  9. Atom tablets have different display diagonals.
  10. Possibility of reinstalling Windows 8, replacing the OS with others.
  11. Some models have the ability to connect a docking station, which turns the device into a netbook.
  12. 2 GB of RAM.

Acer iconia tab w510 is a full-fledged computer

Purpose

Choosing an Atom tablet is an option to replace two devices at once: a tablet and a netbook. The devices have higher performance than netbooks and full-fledged software. In turn, fans of complex modern games should not choose a device with an Atom processor.

Intel Core Processor

Microsoft Surface Pro is typical.

What user is not familiar with the performance of Intel Core processors? There is no need to talk about this much. Along with high performance, processors consume huge amounts of energy. In maximum load mode, this tablet can withstand up to 4 hours.

Anyone who is ready to play modern games at medium settings can choose a device with such a processor. The tablet's video card is only enough for this. However, for a tablet such indicators are quite enough.

Some tablets are equipped with a previous generation graphics card, the hd 3000. It is 30% weaker than its older sister, the hd 4000. Be careful when choosing a tablet.

One device to replace an ultrabook and a desktop computer

Characteristics

  1. Equipped with an Intel Core processor, most often i3.
  2. Pro tablets are quite heavy. Some models reach up to a kilogram.
  3. Active cooling system (fan).
  4. Most often, devices are equipped with a large display (10.6 or 11.6 inches).
  5. IPS screen matrix.
  6. At least one USB 3.0 port. In this case, the presence of adapters is not provided.
  7. Fast and powerful hard drive from 64 GB.
  8. Battery life up to 8 hours.
  9. Possibility of replacing Windows 8 with another OS.
  10. Quick transition to sleep mode and back.
  11. In some cases, it is possible to connect a docking station.
  12. Almost all devices are equipped with 4 GB RAM. The possibility of its expansion is provided.

Purpose

Who should choose a Pro tablet for Windows 8? For those who want to replace an ultrabook, desktop computer and tablet with one device. The hardware of these devices is the same as that of ultrabooks; the functionality allows you to replace a regular tablet. The ability to connect to large monitors and compactness have long been the hallmark of tablets, which have almost completely replaced desktop PCs.

The only significant difference between Pro tablets and laptops is gaming performance. Here the devices lose significantly. Still, there are exceptions, such as the Razer Edge gaming gadget.

Conclusion

If you need a Windows 8 gadget, but you are afraid that the processor performance will not be enough, the Pro tablet is the solution to your problems. You can get used to the weight, but the functionality of such devices is much wider.

In general, Windows tablets with version 8 of the system are the most adequate alternative to Apple technology.

A full-fledged OS allows you to implement all the functions of a laptop on a tablet, but with some reservations.

With the release of Windows 8, many new devices appeared on store shelves: laptops with touch screens, tablets with a full-fledged G8, as well as various transformers. This article is intended to help those who cannot decide on the form factor of the device before purchasing.

Introduction

I'll be honest, I personally was very skeptical about Windows 8 tablets... until my trip to Barcelona for MWC. Besides me, Artem and Eldar Murtazin also worked at the exhibition. I noticed that Artem took his own wireless keyboard with him, when asked “Why?” he answered simply: “I’m used to typing on it, it’s more convenient for me.” And so I watched as he typed on a laptop with his own keyboard, and something in this design was clearly superfluous - of course, we are talking about the laptop’s built-in keyboard. If you use your accessory, then it loses its meaning.

I also took my keyboard with me and caught myself thinking that it would be much more convenient to use a tablet + keyboard combination. Even then, I noticed the Acer Iconia W700, one of the few tablets on a full-fledged “eight” with an excellent design and a very good screen, and decided to take it with me on one of my trips.

In this article I would like to talk about how convenient Windows tablets and laptops are in various usage scenarios. The fact is that for many people, having Windows is fundamental, so they don’t even look at devices running other OSes. This article will be based on my impressions of two models: Acer Iconia W700 and Asus S200

However, do not confuse this article with a comparison of these two models; it is not a head-to-head comparison, but rather general conclusions that will apply to most other tablets and laptops. I would also like to note the price segment for this article: it will be limited to 20-25 thousand rubles (ultrabooks are not included in this comparison).

Dimensions, ease of carrying

In theory, a tablet is much more convenient to carry with you, in addition, most tablets are lighter in weight than laptops (the W700 is an exception), and it would seem that they have all the advantages, if not for one “but”. You also need to carry a keyboard with you, which takes up about the same space as a tablet (or a little less, but that’s not the point). As a result, the total weight and volume of the tablet with the keyboard will be at the level of a laptop, and the disadvantage is that the keyboard dangles separately in the backpack.

Mobility and work in one place

Relatively speaking, both a laptop and a tablet are mobile devices. But the word “mobility” in the title means something a little different. We are talking about working at a desk in one place, or constantly moving and typing on your knees or other unstable surfaces.

So, let's imagine that you are flying/going on a trip, all your main work will take place in the office or in a hotel room. That is, a static situation. In this case, it would be more appropriate to take a tablet with a keyboard, especially if you have to type a lot and you are used to the “native” keyboard.

But laptops are better suited for those who are constantly on the road and only sometimes have time to grab 20-30 minutes to quickly type or take notes on something on the run. In fairness, it is worth noting that if you are used to a laptop keyboard, then it may be suitable for long work in the office.

Screen

I don’t know if this is a coincidence or intentional, but for some reason Windows 8 tablets (and the Acer W700 is a prime example) are equipped with much better screens than laptops in the same price segment. Judge for yourself: laptops under 25 thousand rubles do not have Full HD resolution and IPS matrices, but tablets based on the same G8 are almost universally equipped with them. And the W700 screen looks absolutely great compared to laptops.

However, in addition to the quality of the screen, there is also such a parameter as the tilt angle. And this is where laptops have an advantage, because tablets can only be fixed in two tilt positions (thanks to the case).

Performance

If we talk about processors, most tablets have Intel Core i3/5 or the latest generation Intel Atom, while most laptops are equipped with the penultimate generation Core i3/5. Intel HD 3000/4000 is responsible for graphics in both cases (except for versions with Atom). But the situation with memory is radically different. Personally, I have almost never seen laptops with SSD drives; they are all equipped with 320 or 500 GB hard drives. But tablets almost always have a 64/128 GB solid-state drive on board. Of course, some may complain about the amount of memory, but let's be honest: how often do you need more than 30 GB of free space (except for watching movies)? Personally, no, a few free gigabytes for photos and texts are enough.

To summarize: in terms of performance, thanks to SSD, tablets are in the lead. But I can’t say the same about versions with the latest Intel Atom (I haven’t tested them yet).

Watching films

I remember back in the days of the old Cowon Q5W, I dreamed of a small tablet on Windows 7, on which I could put MediaPlayer Classic and watch any, even the most difficult, video without any problems. Much water has passed under the bridge since then, Microsoft managed to introduce another version of its OS, and manufacturers finally began mass-producing Windows tablets. As a result, now you can watch almost any movie from your tablet without any problems.

I think everyone understands that laptops are not the best devices for consuming media content, so at this point they are clearly inferior to tablets.

A few thoughts about Windows 8 tablets

I sincerely feel sorry for the hardware manufacturers, because Microsoft played a cruel joke on them by releasing such an unsuccessful OS. I look at the same W700, and I really like it: wonderful appearance, excellent body materials, amazing screen (Acer did everything in their power), but with all this, I understand that all this magic will not be used in the Metro environment, but on a regular desktop, not optimized for finger control.

It seems to me that Windows tablets are positioned as devices for entertainment (Twitter, email, web surfing, games) with the ability to quickly work with documents or specialized programs. However, in reality, it turns out that neither entertainment, nor specialized programs, nor even Word are optimized for a touch screen, and as a result, we have a sort of stripped-down laptop without a keyboard.

Conclusion

On my last trip, I took both the Acer W700 and the Asus S200 with me, the idea, of course, is crazy, but I was just afraid to go to the event with one tablet, you never know. As a result, I spent most of my time on my laptop. At first, my mouse didn’t connect to the tablet, then I couldn’t set the tilt angle that was comfortable for me, as a result, I gave up on all this and moved to the laptop. Still, it is much more suitable as a tool for traveling. In addition, it is simply inconvenient to take a tablet with you to a presentation or other event.

And tablets, in my opinion, are more suitable for students. Judge for yourself, at the institute they are used as a typewriter with its own or a complete keyboard, and on the way home/from home they serve as a reader/media player. In addition, you do not need a separate reading device at home. In addition, apparently, in just a couple of months, many light and thin G8 tablets with Intel Atom on board will appear on the market (Samsung Ativ Tab 3 is one of them).

Tablets are ubiquitous today and every more or less major manufacturer releases many new models that immediately respond to touch. Due to the fact that Windows 8 works perfectly on tablets, and devices of this kind have become lighter, thinner, and even received fresh hardware, these practical PCs are not going to disappear - at least in the near future. However, the fact that tablets are a new category on the market does not mean that every such computer is perfect. And first of all, this is the reason why we are writing this article - we decided to weed out everything that seems to us to be useless junk and point you to the best representatives of this class, trying to give appropriate explanations.

We've seen several variations of the Windows tablet before, from Atom-based devices that last a full workday to massive laptop alternatives with Intel Core processors. We saw stand-alone tablets, connectors through which the device can be attached to a docking station, and a number of accessories that complement this or that kit - from various keyboards to joysticks and styluses. The connecting link that unites all the models on our list is not hardware or even accessories, but software. The key difference between these tablets and devices with the prefix “i” in their names, as well as from Android devices, is Windows 8 and the updated Windows 8.1 - and not their poor twin Windows RT. This is a full 86-bit version of Windows 8 that supports all relevant programs.

The transition from using a laptop to using a tablet also brings about some new features in pocket PCs. The sensors found on smartphones in the past enable new ways of interacting with the computer, and a variety of accelerometers, gyroscopes, and electronic compasses have emerged to detect location information that is used in immersive experiences, particularly for proper display orientation. And don't forget about touching. Capacitive screens that can track the movement of 5-10 fingers simultaneously allow you to perform any task using a swipe, tap or pinch gesture. This applies even to those manipulations for which, say, a year ago you needed a keyboard and mouse.

Before us is a brave new world filled with tablets, but it also has its problems. The thin frames of the device raise concerns about heat dissipation - especially if the heating of the tablet can literally be felt in your hand. If gestures don't respond well, touch screens will create new frustrations, using removable storage and accessories increases the risk of losing an important part of your PC on a trip or outing, while with a laptop keyboard this number is not will pass - no matter what you say about the tablet.

In order to make your life easier and tell you about more and less reliable models, we conscientiously went through the tablet jungle, comparing and testing dozens of tablet PCs. Below we bring to your attention our list of the ten best tablets with Windows 8.
