Monastery of Agios Neophytos
The Orthodox monastery is located near Coral Bay, 10 kilometers from Paphos. It was founded in the 12th century by Neophyte the Recluse.
History says that Neophytos was a novice of John Chrysostom. In an effort to become a hermit, he settled in the mountains where there were caves. The Neophyte chose one of them for asceticism and began breaking stones inside to enlarge it. Then he made a cell in it and closed all other exits from the cave.
The Bishop of Paphos in 1166 began to persuade Neophytos to accept the priesthood and take disciples. The neophyte resisted for four years, but finally succumbed. So his cell turned first into a monastery, and then into a monastery.
When the number of students grew, Neophyte decided to leave this hectic life and carved another cell into the rock. There he carved a grave for himself, and bequeathed not to touch it until the Last Judgment.
In the 15th century, the main building of the monastery was built and the relics of the saint were transferred to it.
