Almost all modern laptop models are sold with a built-in webcam. Considering that video communication is becoming more and more popular among computer users every year, this is very convenient.

But suppose you didn’t use the camera, but after making the first call, you noticed the image - very light, dark, black and white, and this option is also possible - the camera simply did not turn on. In any case, you need to configure the webcam on your laptop for it to work correctly in the future.

Often, problems with the camera are solved very easily. If nothing helps, then the problem may be related to the hardware, and you need to take the laptop in for repair. To buy a brand new, or not entirely new, laptop with confidence that the camera is in working order, I advise you to read about several ways to check the camera on a laptop.

So, the first thing to do is check installed drivers for the camera. Go to “Start” - "Control Panel". Here we open the item "Device Manager".

Find an item in the list and expand it by clicking on the small arrow. Available connected devices will be displayed here. The one responsible for the camera will be called something like Web, Cam, Video. Make sure that the icon next to the name does not have a yellow exclamation mark or a red cross - this may indicate that the drivers are installed incorrectly or are missing.

Right-click on the desired device and go to the context menu item “Properties”.

On the General tab, in the field "Device Status" should be written "The device is working normally". This means that the camera is in good working order. If there is a different inscription, go to the “Driver” tab.

Here you can see which driver was installed, when it was installed, update or remove existing drivers.

If problems with the camera began after repairing the laptop, then click “Update” and select "Automatically search for updated drivers". The wizard will search for drivers on your laptop and on the Internet. If it finds drivers on the laptop, install them and the problem will be solved.

You can install the drivers yourself. An installation disk should be included with your laptop or camera. Insert it into your laptop's drive, then follow the suggested installation wizard steps. As a result, you will install all the drivers necessary for the connected devices, including the camera.

If you can’t find the disk, or you bought the camera separately, but the laptop simply doesn’t have a disk drive, don’t worry. You can download drivers from the official website of the laptop manufacturer completely free of charge. Then install the device drivers yourself.

Special programs can also help you find and install drivers on your laptop. You can use the free Driver Pack Solution program. You can download it and read about it in more detail by following the link.

After installing the drivers, be sure to restart your laptop.

The second thing to do is check if the camera is connected in Device Manager. We go to the already familiar device manager and open the item "Image Processing Devices". Look at the icon of the device responsible for the camera; there should not be any arrows next to it, as shown in the figure.

If it is there, right-click on it and select from the context menu "Engage".

The device manager will blink, that is, it will update, the arrow will disappear, and the camera should work.

The third thing you need to do is install a special web camera program. You can download it from the Internet, for example, LiveCam, WebCam Max or SplitCam. There are also various portable versions that do not need to be installed on your computer; download and use.

Launch the selected program. After this, a window should appear with the image entering the camera, and a green indicator next to the camera itself will light up, indicating that it is working.

In such programs you can configure the camera. Find the appropriate item. For me it’s “Options” - “Video Capture Filter”.

Here you can change some camera parameters and make the image normal for perception.

If you do not want to download any programs, then consider the fourth point. It is suitable for those who have Skype installed on laptop. You can also configure the camera using it. Go to “Tools” - “Settings”.

Next, on the “Basic” tab, open "Video Settings". Here the video from the camera should appear in the main window, to change the settings click on the button "Webcam Settings".

In the next window you can select the desired settings for the camera image.

I hope the described methods will help you set up the camera on your laptop: the image from it will be displayed during video calls, with normal brightness and contrast.

A device such as a webcam allows us to communicate via video over the Internet. Every day, a small digital webcam is becoming more and more popular; many consumers use the device to shoot videos and communicate with friends via video chat. Companies use these devices for video conferencing or simple daily communication with clients. Modern webcams do not require much effort to install, and today we will tell you how to set up a webcam on your computer. Believe me, even a person who is poorly versed in modern technologies can connect the device.

    How to connect a webcam?

How can an inexperienced user enable webcams on a computer with the Windows 7 operating system? Today, a fairly large number of laptops already have a built-in webcam, and its configuration is carried out by the equipment itself. If it is not built into the computer, then you can install a webcam in the following ways:

    • Using grips if the LCD monitor is narrow.
    • Place it on the table or under the monitor if the webcam has a platform or leg.

Important! Regardless of the installation method, all gadgets are connected via a cord to the USB input.

    Installation sequence

Most webcams switch automatically when connected. And in order for the operating system to see the new device, you need to install a special program.

Detailed instructions for connecting and setting up the device:

    1. Read the operating instructions carefully. It may indicate what needs to be done first: install the software and then connect the webcam, or vice versa.
    2. Connect the camera via USB port to your computer. As a rule, the required connector is located at the rear of the system unit. On laptops, the USB port may be located on the side or front.
    3. Wait for the software to automatically install. If this does not happen, the system may suggest searching for a driver on the Internet. From this point on, the basic functions of the switching device should be available.
    4. Insert the installation disc into the CD-ROM. The installer window should appear. Download the program from the disk that came with the webcam, like a regular program. Follow the setup wizard prompts until the webcam program files are completely downloaded to your computer.

Important! If you wish, you can additionally install various programs to work with the device. Open “Start” - “Programs”. In the application that opens, configure various parameters of the webcam: width, height, brightness, quality.

    1. If you carried out all the manipulations to install the driver correctly, then when you open the “My Computer” window, you will be able to see the connected device.

How to connect a webcam to a PC without a disk?

If the device was purchased without a disk, then the necessary software can be downloaded on the Internet:

    1. Look at the manufacturer and the name of the selected model.
    2. Go to the manufacturer's website.
    3. Find the driver for your device model on the official website.
    4. Download the program.
    5. Run the downloaded file. The installer window will open.
    6. Perform the same manipulations as described above.
    7. After installing the downloaded drivers, restart your computer.

Important! To find a driver for your model, you can enter the device identification number on the manufacturer’s official website.

In “Device Manager”, find the video camera; there will be an exclamation mark next to it, since it does not have a driver. Right-click on the device name and go to “Properties”. Go to the “Details” tab and select “Hardware ID”. Use the first line as the name of the device and enter it into the search engine.

Download the software found by identification code:

    • If there was no disk for the camera, you can download the driver pack. This is a set of different drivers for different devices. Look in the driver package for the driver for your model.
    • If your model is capable of working without a driver, then connect the camera to your computer and start working with it.
    • If there is no software, you can select “Update drivers” in the device manager and click “Automatic search for drivers.”

Important! All these manipulations must be performed after physically connecting the webcam to the computer.

How to install a camera on your computer in Skype?

    4. Select “Settings”.
    5. In the “General” section, go to “Video Settings”.
    6. The image from the video camera will appear in a separate window.
    7. Position your webcam so that it captures your face.
    8. Test the microphone and webcam. Configure the settings you need.

How to set up a camera on a laptop?

Almost all laptop models have a built-in camera. The operating system automatically finds software for the device. If the webcam still does not work, then install the software via the disk that comes with the laptop.

    • Some laptops have a function to turn the device on and off. Therefore, if the device does not work, then check the power button: press Fn to activate it.
    • Never touch the webcam lens with your hands if you want it to work properly.

If the Internet is fast enough to transmit audio and video, users give preference to voice communication. And if you have a web camera on your computer (on a laptop it is a standard integrated device), they will be able to see each other in real time.

Today we will look at how to connect a webcam to a computer with Windows 7 - 10 and configure it for normal operation in supported applications and popular services: Skype, Mail.ru Agent, Odnoklassniki.

    Connection

Working with the camera begins from the moment it is connected to the computer. It is already installed on the laptop, so all you have to do is turn it on.

On a Windows 10 computer, the webcam is installed on the top or side edge of the monitor using a special mount, which is included in the package.

A less common case is to install the device (along with a microphone) on a special holder.

After installation or securing, the device must be connected to the computer. Most cameras are equipped with a USB interface, which additionally supplies power to the device.

It happens that power is supplied to the device separately, so you should plug the camera plug into a surge protector or directly into the network.

    Installing drivers

You won’t be able to turn on the webcam on your computer until Windows 10 installs a driver that allows the OS and programs running in its environment to capture the video stream coming from it and change the settings.

If, after turning on the device, the drivers are not installed on it, perform the installation manually. To do this, call the “Device Manager” of Windows 10 (in the “seven” and “eight” everything is done in the same way), find an unknown device, call its context menu and click “Update drivers”.

    Select automatic update mode.

The second method of installing the driver is to use the disk that came with the webcam. We insert the disk into the drive, launch the executable file located in its root (most often setup.exe), if autorun does not work, and follow the instructions given.

The last way to get a driver, if the first ones did not help or there is no disk, is to download the software from the official website or download a driver pack and install it manually or using, for example, Snappy Drivers. Almost any online driver update utility for Windows 10 will also help here.

    Device configuration in Windows

Turning on the webcam on your laptop and seeing your appearance there just won’t work. Using Windows 10, you can check the functioning of the device by going to the control panel item called “Cameras and Scanners”. After double clicking, an image will appear on the display if the device is working. You can also use a special service (videochatru.com) or program (WebCamMax, ManyCam) for this.

    Configuration in Skype

Skype is an application for which a significant number of users purchase a webcam.

    • Its configuration begins with launching the program.
    • Then go to “Settings”.

    • Click on the “Video Settings” tab.

    • Move the switch to the “no one” position.
    • Click “Web camera settings” and, by dragging the sliders, set the values of the corresponding device parameters, observing their changes in real time.

    Configuration for social networks

For video communication on domestic social networks, the web camera does not require any settings. To make it work you will have to install a Flash player for Windows 7 - 10, the absence of which becomes a burden for hundreds of users.

    Configuration for Mail.ru

Setting up a camera in Windows 10 to work in the Mail.ru agent is done in the configuration settings section called “Voice and Video”.

Here you can select the active device if the laptop, in addition to the built-in one, also uses a third-party camera.

By checking the box next to the only option, you can include yourself in the list of users that the system will detect by the presence of a webcam.

    Turning on the device

By default, the webcam on a laptop does not work in standby mode, so the device must be turned on to use it.

You can turn on the camera using hardware keys, one of which is the “Fn” button. The second key can be one of the function buttons F1-F12. To do this, carefully study the instructions for the laptop or alternative key assignments. It is printed in a different color or in the form of small icons in the corner of the button.

After activating the device, the application or service will be able to automatically turn on the webcam and broadcast the image it receives in the form of streaming video to the interlocutor.

Modern technologies allow you to connect a video camera to your computer and make video calls from it, maintain a video blog, or install a home video surveillance system.

To connect a webcam to your computer, you need to follow a number of fairly simple steps.

Step 1. Attach a webcam to a PC monitor. Many webcams have a mount at the base that allows you to install it on the top of the monitor by snapping it with a special clip.

Step 2. If there is no such mount on the webcam, you need to find a flat, high place where you can place the webcam so that its eye is directed at the face of the person sitting at the PC.

Step 3. Connect the webcam's USB cable to one of the computer's USB ports (rectangular) located on the side, front or rear panel.

The USB connector can only be inserted one way into a USB port. If the connector does not fit into the port, you must rotate it 180 degrees and try again.

Important! It is important to make sure that it is connected directly to the computer and not to a USB hub, because... USB hubs often do not have enough power to operate the webcam.

If you are connecting your USB webcam to a MAC computer, you will most likely need to connect it via a USB-C to USB adapter.

    Software installation and configuration

Step 1. Insert the CD that came with the webcam into the CD (DVD) drive, making sure that the manufacturer's logo is at the top of the disc.

Since most modern MAC computers do not come with CD drives, you must use a separate CD drive connected via USB.

Step 2. Once the CD is inserted into the CD/DVD drive, you must wait for the software installation window to launch.

On a note! If the installation program does not start, launch the “Computer” icon on the desktop by double-clicking.

Step 3. Click on the CD/DVD drive icon with the disc inserted, opening its folder.

Step 4. Run the software installation file Setup.exe by double-clicking on it.

Important! If the webcam CD is not supplied or a CD/DVD drive is not available, skip these steps.

    Downloading software from the site

You can find and download the software for your specific webcam in the "Download" section of the webcam manufacturer's website.

Step 1. Before downloading the software, you must select the operating system in which the software will be installed and click “Download”.

Step 2. After downloading the installation file, launch it with a mouse click. The software installation window will open.

    Software setup (example)

Step 1. Select a language and click “Forward”.

Step 2. If the webcam is connected, click “Forward”; if not, connect it to the computer and click “Forward”.

Step 3. Select the software to be installed and its installation location (it is recommended to leave “Default”). Click "Forward".

Step 4. After installing the necessary files, check the camera settings; its image should start in the central window. If necessary, adjust the webcam so that it looks at your face from your preferred angle.

Check the webcam sound. When speaking words into a webcam, you may notice a burst in the activity bar next to the “Audio” (or similar) section in the webcam window. Click "Forward".

Reference! If you don't see any activity from your webcam microphone, it is likely not working and may need to be enabled through your webcam or operating system settings.

Step 5. To exit the installation process, click “Test my webcam”.

Step 6. The camcorder software will start. Its window usually has a settings section, often in the form of a gear icon. You can click the icon to view and change camera settings, including contrast, brightness, sound settings, and more.

Reference! If the webcam program does not open automatically after installation is complete, you need to find its icon on your computer and manually launch it by clicking the mouse.

Step 7 After making all the webcam settings, click “Save”.

Some webcam settings can also be made when switching it to operating mode.

    Connecting a webcam without software

It is possible that the webcam is supplied without drivers and software. Usually in this option you can purchase a camera from a Chinese manufacturer.

When you connect the webcam, the message “Found new hardware” will appear.

A message may appear indicating that the webcam is ready for use. In this case, there is no need to take further steps to connect it.

A message may also appear stating that it is impossible to install a webcam if the operating system does not find the necessary drivers for it.

In this case, you need to find the video camera drivers using a special wizard.

Installing the driver using the wizard

    Installation via device ID

If the system fails to detect the driver, you must find the driver on the Internet manually using the ID of the installed equipment.

Step 1. In Device Manager, right-click on “Unknown Device” and select “Properties”.

Step 2. In the next window, go to the “Information” tab and select “Equipment ID” from the list. The ID code of the installed equipment will appear at the bottom in the “Value” field.

Step 3. Select the top line with the code with the mouse and press the “Ctrl + C” combination on the keyboard, copying it.

Step 4. Follow the link: https://devid.drp.su/?l=ru and paste the copied information into the search line using the “Ctrl+V” key combination. Select the type of operating system and its bit depth by checking the x64 or x86 checkbox. Click "Find drivers".

Step 5. A suitable driver will appear for download. Click the “Download” button.

Step 6. After downloading the file, launch it with the mouse button. The DriverPack Solution installation window will appear. Click “Install manually”.

Step 7 The “Device Driver Installation Wizard” will launch. Click "Next".

Step 8 After installing the video camera driver, click “Close” (“Finish”).

The installed webcam will appear in Device Manager.

    Setting up your webcam microphone

It is possible that the video from the webcam is transmitted, but the sound is not. In this case, you may need to configure the webcam microphone in your operating system.

Step 1. Right-click the Volume icon in the clock area and left-click Playback Devices.

Click on “Volume” and select “Playback devices” with the left mouse button

Step 2. Go to the Recording tab and right-click on the Microphone icon, selecting Properties.

Step 3. In the “General” tab, in the “Controller” column, make sure that the required audio source (web camera) is selected. In the “Use of device” item, you also need to set the value “Use this device (on)”.

Step 4. Go to the “Levels” tab, where you make sure that the microphone is not muted (the crossed out circle next to the speaker icon) and set the microphone volume in Desktop Microphone to 95-100%. You can also adjust the Microphone Boost level - it is usually set to 0 dB.

Step 5. To adjust the sound of the microphone after hearing your voice in the computer speakers, you need to go to the “Listen” tab and check the “Listen from this device” checkbox. After making all the settings, click “Apply”, then “OK”.

For normal operation of the video camera, it is also necessary to monitor whether it is currently being used by other programs in the OS. In addition, when setting it up, you should read the “Operation Manual” to find out specific recommendations for working with the camera.
