One of the decorations in clothes is beautiful accessories. These are various eyelets, blocks, buttons, zippers, etc. They not only visually decorate the product, but also have a functional meaning. Sometimes people encounter problems when the button has torn through the fabric and fallen out or stopped fastening. There is a question about replacing it. You can always go to a workshop or atelier, where, using special equipment, professionals will replace the broken part. It's easier, but also more expensive, and it will take some time.

If you don’t have time to run around the studio and look for a master with necessary tools, then you can try the process at home. But here, too, not everything is so simple. At home self installation Buttons on clothes can end in disaster, because this task requires preparation and skills. Strong physical effort can damage both the fabric and the fittings themselves.

In the article we will look at how to install a button on clothing, what needs to be prepared for this process, and how to perform this operation step by step. We will also give advice to novice seamstresses who want to use buttons in their work, and we will recommend equipment to make their work easier.

Types of buttons

First, let's look at what types there are. Depending on the fittings, there are also various ways its installation.

  • The O-shaped (or ring) button, as the name implies, has the shape of a ring.
  • S-shaped (otherwise “Alpha”) are spring-type buttons. They come either sewn on or with tubes for fastening.
  • Shirt. It consists not of one pin, but of several spikes. Such buttons are attached to thin fabrics or knitted ones and are often used for children's things.
  • Magnetic. This is a self-fastening fitting with such buttons You can often find such buttons on wallets and bags.
  • Koburnaya. In this case, when installing the button on clothing, a screw design of two elements is used. It is screwed into leather jackets, bags, belts with a screwdriver, and is also used in a holster (hence its name).
  • Klyamernaya or block. The lid has a ring fastening. If the button is fastened, you can see the second side fastener in the center.

Set for installing buttons on clothes

If you decide to install the fittings yourself at home, then you need to have the following materials:

  • button consisting of 4 parts;
  • pliers or small hammer;
  • a piece of thick rubber, you can use a plumbing gasket;
  • steel knitting needle;
  • punch (you can use a Phillips screwdriver or dowel);
  • wooden block.

Why do you need a punch?

This is a necessary item when installing a button on clothing. Even if you are not a professional seamstress, but simply decided to change the button on things yourself, you still need to purchase a punch or at least find a replacement for it. It is used to make a neat hole in the fabric. If you pick at it with scissors, it will just be an uneven hole, over time it will stretch and the button will fly out. Using a punch, this can be done, firstly, quickly and accurately, and secondly, in a minimal size. The pin of the button should be pulled firmly onto the fabric.

If the fabric has split edges, then the hole made by the punch must be lubricated with glue, then the edges will not crumble and the button will be firmly fixed in the hole. You can use adhesive fabric.

If you decide to take up sewing professionally, then it won’t hurt you to purchase a device for installing buttons on clothes, as in the photo above. This 11 piece set consists of base board and punches of different sizes. This purchase will significantly speed up the process of installing buttons on clothes at home. If you have a one-time installation job, then instead of a punch you can use a steel knitting needle. If the fabric is split or knitted, then the knitting needle needs to be heated over a fire.

Step-by-step instruction

After a punch has made a neat hole in the marked area, the button is threaded through. A fixation ring is placed on top. Be sure to check that it is positioned away from you along the convex edge of the button.

Then you need to place the product on a dense surface. This could be a wooden block or a rubber gasket. Do not use a metal base, as it can deform the surface of the button when struck by a punch. And this doesn’t suit us at all.

The punch is inserted into the leg of the button and, by pressing, it is divided into parts (usually four). They should lie on the fixation ring. All that remains is to press these metal petals into the fabric with a hammer. To do this, use a hammer, but be careful. There is no need for brute physical force here, as you can damage the button. A little effort will be enough.

Just in case, buy a few extra barrels, in case you won’t be able to carefully hammer in the pin petals the first time, and they will break. This kind of problem is not uncommon for beginning craftsmen.

Installing shirt buttons

This type of button is considered the simplest. Here, the main tool for installing buttons on clothes will be pliers. The installation process is similar to the previous option, only the punch needs a larger diameter.

The front parts are installed first, then the internal parts. After marking with a simple pencil, the crown of the button is pierced into the fabric. Then the product is laid on a wooden beam and the inside is hammered with little effort.

The second part of the button has an S-shaped pin. To hammer in this part, it will no longer be possible to use a wooden beam, except perhaps to drill a hole in it. Usually, when installing buttons on clothes at home, use a nut of the appropriate diameter.

Repairing a damaged button

If you had an incident when installing a shirt button and something went wrong, do not despair. The good thing about these buttons is that they can be removed and reused. To do this, you need to straighten the teeth of the crown and remove it freely from the fabric. You can remove the button with a flat screwdriver or knife. You can straighten the ends of the crown using pliers or small pliers.

Once the teeth are aligned, the button can be reused. This method is also applicable in cases where the button is intact, but the fabric in this place is torn. Then, after carefully removing and restoring the button, it can be installed back on the product, just in a different place.

Press for installing buttons on clothes

The best assistant when sewing clothes with buttons is a special press. It consists of an upper and lower stand and a set of screw-on attachments. On top part a punch is screwed into the press, and a stand for the punch is screwed into the lower part. This press is used for different fabrics, both thin and thick, even leather belts. You can purchase different attachments; they are sold separately. It is advisable to sign them immediately so as not to confuse the size. Each set is designed for a specific button size.

Using this device to install buttons on clothes is easy. Let's take a closer look at how to do this:

  • We install the attachments - screw the top one in until it stops, but not too zealously, and simply insert the bottom one into the round groove of the press.
  • Since there are two sets of attachments for installing the “Alpha” buttons, they are installed alternately for one and the other pair (such buttons consist of four parts).
  • Nozzles are selected according to the size of the button. Typically, the most commonly used punches are purchased - 2, 4 and 6 mm.
  • It is important to correctly mark all the holes and punch them in advance with a punch; it is recommended to do this with a piece of reinforcing fabric.
  • When all the holes are punched, the nozzles are replaced, and then work continues with the fittings. Advice: it is better to punch holes of a smaller diameter. The button pin must be pulled firmly through it, otherwise the button will subsequently fall out.

Procedure

Here's what you need to do:

  1. First, a hole is punched in both the fabric and the pad (if there is one).
  2. We replace the punch with an attachment for the eyelets.
  3. A part of the button is placed on the lower part of the press with the pin facing up. We place the fabric on top with the wrong side up, aligning the hole with the pin. If necessary, either a piece of fabric or a reinforcing plastic ring is added.
  4. A counter washer is placed on top. Its concave side should point down.
  5. We press gently and smoothly on the handle of the press. In this case, the pin is flared. The button is firmly installed on the fabric.

Installation of the lower parts

First, the attachments for the lower elements of the button are replaced. The wrong side of the fittings is placed underneath. It comes with a long pin. First, reinforcing fabric is placed on top of it, then the main material, face up.

The other part of the button with a small S-shaped pin is placed on the top nozzle with a plastic tip. After this, press the press handle all the way, but carefully. This completes the process.

Forceps

If you want to purchase a machine for installing buttons on clothes, it is best to use tongs. This is a very useful tool that will greatly facilitate the work of a seamstress. As professionals advise, there is no need to save on such a product. Cheap tongs often have handles that break. Typically, attachments for various buttons are sold in the kit for this tool.

The appearance of the tongs differs greatly from different manufacturers, but the method of use is similar.

The handles of the tongs have a lock. When starting to work with such a tool, you need to squeeze the handles and remove the lock. Places for buttons are marked in the fabric and holes are made with a punch. Then the button is inserted into it with the head facing up and the tongs are compressed. You need to press smoothly, but all the way.

Helpful information

In order for the back and front parts of the button to coincide exactly, and wrinkles do not form on the clothes, you need to accurately mark the installation locations individual elements. Some people use the following method: install the lower parts first, and lubricate the pin with chalk. By aligning the edges of the clothing, the chalk leaves a mark in the right place. After this, it is easy to find the desired point for the upper parts.

Some people don't like this technique. They use a different way of marking. Craftsmen measure the distance with a pencil or use a self-disappearing marker. In this option, the upper front elements are installed first, and only then the lower ones.

In the article we examined in detail different ways installing buttons at home. We hope that the tips will help you complete this type of work quickly and efficiently.

Quite often, people encounter the problem of a torn button on a laptop. If this problem has overtaken you, do not despair and do not run to buy a new keyboard. The button can be easily repaired.

If the button not only comes off, but also splits, then you will have to throw it away. You can try to glue it together with superglue, but such a design will most likely be short-lived. By contacting service center, can be purchased new button. Or try making it yourself: make a mold from plasticine and fill it with epoxy resin, lower the contact into the desired place. You can even out the unevenness of a homemade button using sandpaper. The key is attached to the keyboard using a special rocker (several parts connected by a hinge principle). If the rocker falls off along with the button, disconnect the rocker and carefully replace it. Now insert the protrusions on the rocker into the grooves of the lid. When the ears are in the grooves, lightly press the button and lock it in place.

In the case where a large button (spacebar) comes off, keep in mind that it has a metal stabilizer underneath it, which regulates uniform pressing. This button should be attached a little differently. First, insert the ends of the stabilizer into the holes provided for this. Secure the bottom of the rocker into the grooves. Reinstall the button itself.

The main thing is don’t rush and don’t get upset if something doesn’t work out. First, take a closer look and understand what is attached where, and then start repairing.

How to install a spring button (Alpha) on clothes?

How to expand a button on clothes?

There is always something to mount a button in your toolbox.
For example: Phillips screwdriver, thick nail, bolts, etc.

To make a hole along the button, use a thick awl or nail. If the fabric is synthetic, you can heat an awl (nail) and make a hole. Next, we assemble the button and begin the process.
The first task is to expand the cylindrical part of the button with any suitable device (cone-shaped rod).

Then use a bolt of suitable diameter or another cylindrical rod finally
Flare the button cylinder. Ready.
It is advisable to install the button on a smooth wooden surface.
But try not to overdo it, otherwise the result will not please you. You can break the button so much that it simply falls apart. You need to be especially careful when working with buttons of this design. If alignment is disturbed, it is easily destroyed.
Let's move on to installing the bottom part of the button.
Use a drill to make a hole in a wooden block

The diameter and depth of the recess should approximately correspond to the male part Checking
We assemble the part, put a block on top and hit it with a hammer. Ready.
If you need to use this device repeatedly, then it is better to use hard wood and make a recess from the end of the block. It will last longer.
This operation can also be carried out using a device for installing shirt buttons
The button part is installed, but slightly deformed. If this is not of fundamental importance, then this method can be used.
The male button part is fixed by flaring the button rod. Therefore, the depth and diameter of the recess in the device should not be greater than the bottom of the button.

But if you don’t have an electric drill and other devices at hand, you will have to use some cylindrical object. For example, a socket wrench with a diameter of 6 mm.

or a nut with a diameter of 8mm
The bottom part of the button turns out to be slightly deformed, but if it is not of fundamental importance, then the result is positive.
The bottom part of the button might look like this. But the operating principle remains the same.
In addition, it should be taken into account that manufacturers produce different diameters of buttons, having different diameters, both external and internal.

When installing the button, be careful not to damage the spring. The diameter of the cylindrical rod for flaring the button should not be greater than the distance between the button springs.

Also, when installing buttons, it is necessary to take into account the diameter of the round rod of the front part of the button. The play between the button tube and the hole should not be more than 0.5 mm. Otherwise, you will not be able to install the button properly.

Keep in mind that high-quality fittings can only be installed in an atelier or workshop using appropriate professional equipment.

Having learned the structure of the button and a number of simple operations for removing and installing it, the user will be able to independently fix a minor breakdown or replace the faulty key with a new one.

How to insert a button into the keyboard on a laptop

Laptop, unlike personal computer, has a built-in dialing device, the cost of which is significantly higher due to its compact dimensions and integral design. That is why its repair, including independent repairs, is constantly in demand and economically justified.

With prolonged use and active use, parts of the keyboard fall out or break, requiring replacement, quite often.

However, before you run to the service center, let’s try to figure out whether you can insert a button into the laptop keyboard yourself at home and, perhaps, save money and personal time.

Possible reasons

There can be many possible reasons for keys breaking or falling out:

To understand what this leads to and determine the probability self-repair, consider the following cases when one or more keys have fallen out or do not work:

  1. the upper part simply jumped out of the mounts, got stuck, the plastic mount broke, or the fixing lugs on the aluminum base of the keyboard were bent. - We install, repair or replace ourselves;
  2. there was a short circuit and/or destruction of the conductive paths due to a manufacturing defect, liquid ingress or other outside interference. - It is worth contacting the service if you do not have certain skills;
  3. damage to the connecting motherboard plume. - Replacement (preferably by a specialist) of the film or the entire device.

Taking into account the fact that the majority of users are amateurs, we will consider only the correction of breakdowns in the first case: mechanical damage.

To do this you may need:

  • a regular needle or a syringe;
  • paper clip;
  • glue;
  • knife, small screwdriver;
  • wire cutters and pliers;
  • thin soldering iron and lighter;
  • small vice.

The first two positions of the list are enough to simply insert the dropped item, and the rest may be needed for minor repairs.

Important: Please note right away that all work must be carried out ONLY with the device disconnected from the network and the battery removed.

Button and its design

Before inserting a button into the laptop keyboard yourself, we recommend that you become familiar with its design. This will help you carry out repairs correctly, as well as make installation easy and simple. It should be remembered and taken into account that, unlike a stationary one, a laptop keyboard has a shorter stroke.

They consist of:

A typical keyboard base in a laptop is an aluminum plate, stamped with ears for good fixation of the clamshell and the contact pad, under which there are three layers of film with conductive graphite tracks.

Reliable fastening of the swing ensures uniform movement and the absence of distortions when pressing the key.

Please note that various manufacturers There may be slight design differences in the shape and types of fasteners.

Therefore, if you need to disassemble it yourself for the first time, proceed carefully.

Disassembly procedure

There are often situations when it becomes necessary to completely remove and disassemble the button. For example, sinking, lack of response on the screen when it is pressed, or deformation of the folding bed mounting ears. Removing, disassembling and inserting a button into a laptop keyboard is quite easy.

To do this, you will need a thin, flat instrument, such as a dental hook. As you know from the previous section, the swing is attached to the lid in four places. You can’t just bend it and “rip it off” - this will deform the swing and lead to damage.

That's why:

Inserting a button on a laptop is very easy

First, we carefully inspect all the fasteners, ears, antennae and grooves again. If you have carefully studied the device and design, read the disassembly procedure, then putting the popped element back in place will not be difficult.

This process involves two simple steps:

Please note that sometimes the lid will fall out along with the swing. In such a case, you should disassemble it, carry out an inspection, and only then install it. Moreover, first we insert the folding mechanism, and then the lid itself.

The described process may seem complicated, but you just have to try it once and you will see for yourself that inserting a button into a laptop keyboard is very simple!

Installing large buttons

Function keys (space, register, tab, enter, etc.) are larger than the others. It is this property that requires a slightly different installation order. The reason for this is the presence of a metal stabilizer, which ensures even pressure.

There are additional lugs on the keyboard backing for reliable fixation of the rigidity amplifier itself.

And although everything else is exactly the same as described above, we install long buttons on the folding bed in three stages:

Please note that some long keys (for example, the spacebar) are fixed by two folding mechanisms and a rigidity amplifier.

We repair keys

As a rule, it is better not to start complex and time-consuming repairs yourself.

Having disassembled a faulty, poorly functioning or torn out key, you will have to, based on its careful examination, make one of three decisions:

  • put it back “as is”, without changes;
  • purchase and install a new one (used is also possible);
  • make minor repairs or replace parts from the “donor” and continue operation.

For the last point, you may find the tools we talked about above useful.

Minor mechanical repairs include:

  • assembly and installation of the popped-out parts of the mechanism into the grooves (quite often the clamshell “crumbles”);
  • correction of bent lugs in the metal base of the keyboard (for example, when a heavy object falls on the keyboard);
  • gluing cracks and broken fasteners.

It is not worth repairing the damage to the latches and hinge joint of the clamshell - it is better, if possible, to find a “donor” or replace the entire key. The smoothness, softness and quietness of its operation depends on this.

A rubber spring is usually glued to a film with conductive tracks. Sometimes it happens that it falls out. In this case, before inserting the button into the laptop keyboard, you should carefully install its wide part towards the bottom, strictly in the center. Displacement of the spring during installation is not allowed.

Having a problem with the keys? Try to solve it yourself if possible. It is not difficult! All you need is attentiveness, perseverance, accuracy and a little time.

Having acquired the necessary skills, you can, on occasion, save the life of your pet by promptly eliminating the consequences of moisture ingress or significantly extend it by performing a general cleaning of dust and crumbs.

Helpful advice: By the way, before completely disassembling the keyboard of your laptop, we strongly recommend taking a photo, just in case, of the order of the keys. This will help greatly simplify and speed up the reassembly process!

You will need

  • 4-piece button
  • Plastic tool for installing buttons
  • Pliers or hammer
  • A piece of rubber (plumbing gasket)
  • Heated steel spoke
  • Riveting pliers for fittings
  • Press punch

Instructions

In the studio, when installing metal fittings, including buttons, a special press and various attachments are used. These attachments help give the buttons a neat appearance. In, most likely, you will not have access to such equipment, so you will have to be content with the means at hand. In any case, you will definitely need a punch, so it is better to purchase it in advance. A punch is needed to ensure that the hole is even and the edges of the fabric are not damaged. You can buy one punch, the smallest size, but it is better to buy a set with removable nozzles of different diameters. Of course, you can simply cut a hole for the button using scissors, but in this case the hole will become larger over time and the button will fall out of it. For best effect the hole should have a minimum diameter and fit tightly around the base of the button. This way you can ensure the most reliable fixation.

Using a punch, a hole is made in the desired location of the fabric. It must be done carefully; a punch will help keep the edges of the hole smooth.

Now you need to insert the button into the hole. A ring is placed on top for fixation. It needs to be laid along the convex edge of the button, that is, it must be installed away from you.

Then you need to place the fabric on a flat surface. It should not be metal, because metal can damage the button. Ideally, you need to choose a wooden base, but any sufficiently dense surface that does not threaten the integrity of the fittings will do.

Secure the button with a hammer. There is no need for extra effort here, too strong blows may tear the fabric and damage the button.

Standard four-piece buttons are easier to install. They close using a ring located at the top of the button. Often, separate punches are included with such buttons. Of course, you can use such tools, but most often they are less effective.

As a last resort, you can try to attach the button using improvised means, without special tools. The most difficult thing here is to make the correct hole of the required diameter with smooth edges. You can use scissors, but a hot steel knitting needle is a more effective tool. The hole should be slightly smaller than the base of the button. Now place the fittings in it. The standard button itself consists of four parts, two functional, on the back, and two on the outside, decorative. After installing the button, place a piece of rubber on the outer and back parts (a plumbing gasket will do). This will keep the button from deforming. At the end of the process, you need to fix the button using pliers. Here it will be necessary to make physical efforts to secure the button as securely as possible.

If you often have to install buttons on, it makes sense to buy a special device. It is sold at any fabric store. Most often it comes with a set of buttons. This device looks quite simple: it is a plastic instrument in the shape of a “book” with two holes at the rounded ends. It's easy to use. You need to place the button parts in these holes, put the fabric between the back and front parts of the fittings. Now press the button firmly with pliers. You can also use a hammer, but carefully calculate the impact force: there is a risk of damaging the fabric. 2

Another useful tool is pliers specifically designed for installing buttons. They are not cheap, but it is better not to skimp: the handles of cheap tongs will quickly break. This tool most often comes in a kit: it comes with various attachments for specific button diameters. The forceps work like this: first you need to squeeze their handles and remove the lock, then make a hole in the fabric. The button is inserted into this hole with the cap facing up, and then the tongs are squeezed until it stops. That's it, the fittings are installed.

An even more professional tool is a special press punch for installing sewing accessories. There are presses specifically for buttons, but it is more profitable to buy a universal tool; in the future it can be used for other accessories: eyelets, blocks, buttons with rims, etc. The press comes with instructions that must be strictly followed. Before starting work, a suitable attachment for a specific button is installed on the press. Then a small, even hole is made into which the button is installed. To complete the process, you just need to turn the press handle clockwise; no additional effort is required. The button will fasten securely.

All of the above manual methods there is one big drawback: in order to securely fasten the fittings you will have to make a lot of physical effort. If you sew a lot, it will be useful to purchase a special press punch, which will greatly simplify the process of installing the button. It is not cheap, but it will be worth the money for those who install fittings on a regular basis.
