If none of these helps, you can

The reason for this little article is not because I suddenly decided to upgrade my HTC Sensation XL to latest firmware(I had it lying idle for now), but the fact is that several of my friends did this. The result is that every owner of a smartphone from among his acquaintances and friends began to wonder about rolling back the firmware or looking for an alternative among custom ones, because it is almost impossible to use a device with the official firmware on Android 4.0: “everything is wrong, ugly and generally wrong.”

So I decided to take out my Sensation XL, dust it off, and update it to tell you about my impressions of new firmware, about what good and bad I discovered in it. The smartphone “sees” the update almost immediately after turning it on and offers to download it; the installation process can be postponed or started immediately after the download of the software update is completed.

Downloading (via Wi-Fi) and installing the new firmware takes about ten minutes, depending on the speed of the network connection, of course, after which the lucky owner of the Sensation XL will first see a window for setting up installed programs in the familiar Android 4.0 interface, and then a window with congratulations that a new update has been installed on the phone. And it begins.

Smartphone with Android 4.0 without factory reset

If you are updating your HTC Sensation XL to new firmware and don't want to reset it to factory settings after the update, you need to prepare for the hardest part. On the one hand, a factory reset is definitely evil because you lose everything installed programs, you will have to install them again, you lose all your neatly arranged program icons, and, accordingly, everything else, the device becomes clean. On the other hand, the official firmware is up to Android 4.0 ICS for HTC smartphone Sensation XCL is such that it becomes almost impossible to use the device after updating and without returning to factory settings. Here are some reasons for this "impossible":

  • Delays when scrolling through desktop screens and working with program menus
  • Slow browser operation, freezing, pages with flash on updated smartphone barely move
  • Serious drawback random access memory(when running heavy programs like Skype, the smartphone starts to work even slower, until applications crash)

To describe these problems briefly, you can use the phrase “space brakes”; it most succinctly reflects what the owner of an HTC Sensation XL will encounter, who has updated his device to the official firmware with the “four”, but did not want to return to factory settings or, in other words, a hard reboot ( hard reset). But if you do hard reset, the user will get a pretty good device, albeit with a number of reservations.

Of course, by and large, these are all nitpicks, and those who read this text without being the owner of the device may not understand them. But try to put yourself in the shoes of a person who bought a smartphone for a lot of money, updated it and received the not-so-pretty and neatly glued interface of Android 4.0 and Sense 3.6. This mainly applies to pop-ups context menus, which are represented here by simple black rectangles of incomprehensible width, some buttons and settings items do not correspond to what they had before the update, and differences in the color design of some areas of the interface.

But there are also advantages if you consider having Android 4.0 as an advantage. The fact is that HTC Sense 3.6, even though it doesn't look the best with Android 4.0, is functionally better than Sense 4.0. Therefore, in HTC Sensation XL with the latest Android version there is a tab for managing wireless interfaces in the system bar, for example, or screens that scroll around (in Sense 4.0 they scroll to the edge and cannot go further).

Conclusion

On the one hand, it is commendable that HTC does not forget to release updates to Android 4.0 for at least some of its devices, on the other hand, questions remain as to how exactly this is done. Yes, there are no problems with the update process itself, but after it is completed, difficulties begin. Before updating the HTC Sensation XL smartphone specifically, no one will warn you about the need to do a hard reboot, because without it the device will turn into a snail and it will become almost impossible to use it, this is not a fatal flaw, but it is unpleasant. No one warns that the interface will change after the update and become less pleasant and friendly, even if only in details.

I understand that this HTC update can still be called successful against the backdrop of the recent official firmware For Samsung Galaxy Note, for example, where the problems turned out to be much more global. But for users of HTC Sensation XL, who updated immediately after the release of the firmware and encountered the problems listed above, this does not make it any easier, and it seems to me that these people, when choosing their next device, will think about which smartphone manufacturer to take. For HTC, this is not the best development of events; in my opinion, the manufacturer should release updates, but it is worth paying more attention to what comes from the pen of the company and is called “ official update Smartphone software."

To unlock the bootloader you need to do the following:

1) Remove and reinstall the battery.

2) Press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons at the same time.

3) Using the sound keys, select “Fastboot” and press the power button.

4) Connect your smartphone to your computer using a USB cable.

5) Download and install the Android SDK (Software development kit). You can take the archive on the official site, there are versions for Windows, MacOS X and Linux. You may also need Java (you can download from the official website) and program HTC Sync, which includes the necessary drivers.

6) Unpack Android SDK, create new folder(for example, C:\Android) and copy three files into it:

a) To find these files, run SDK Manager.exe from the \android-sdk-windows folder.

b) Wait, after a couple of minutes the packages available for download will be displayed. Install Android SDK Platform and Android SDK Tools from them (or update if your SDK version is r11).

c) Once the installation is complete you will be able to find:

Adb.exe and adbWinApi.dll in the \android-sdk-windows\platform-tools folder.

Fastboot.exe in the \android-sdk-windows\tools folder.

MacOS and Linux users can download fastboot binary files from the following links:

- fastboot-mac

- fastboot linux

7) Open the command prompt (Start > Run > enter CMD or Start > Run > enter CMD, Win7 users can find the command prompt in Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt).

8) Go to the folder with the created files (for example, if the folder is C:\Android, then enter in command line"cd c:\Android").

9) Enter “fastboot oem get_identifier_token” in the command line.

10) You will see one of the screens above - this is the key. Must click right button mouse, select “mark”, select the block and press the right button to copy. The key must start with

<<<< Identifier Token Start >>>>

and end

<<<<< Identifier Token End >>>>>

Then you need to go to the official website (registration is required), scroll to Step 10, insert your key into the My Device Identifier Token field, and click Submit.

11) After a few seconds to the address Email specified during registration, you will receive a message with the unlock key in the attachment - Unlock_code.bin.

We save the file in the folder with other necessary software (in the example - C:\Android).

12) Enter “fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin” into the command line and see a message similar to that shown in the screenshot above. Another message will appear on the smartphone screen:

It is a must read. In short, the meaning comes down to another repetition of “The dark side are they.” Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny”, which in Russian translation sounds like the well-known “Once you take the first step along the dark path, you will no longer be able to turn away from it...”:)

Reading the notice about possible problems with third-party firmware, possible loss of warranty, deletion of all information from the device and other warnings and, if you have not changed your mind, use the volume control key to select “Yes” and press the power button. Ready! The smartphone will be returned to factory settings and the bootloader will be unlocked.

If you select “No”, the smartphone will reboot and no changes will be applied.

13) To lock the bootloader, enter “fastboot oem lock” in the command line. This will not restore the default lock, but will simply lock it, preventing any further changes. To reopen, you will need to repeat step 12.

But, as often happens, not everything turned out to be so simple...

The first problem I encountered was that all the instructions for flashing phones were ONLY for Windows. And I work under OSX! I had to download the firmware and go to a friend...

The second problem is more fun. To flash your phone's firmware, you must first unlock its unloader. Fortunately, this can be done officially, through HTCDev.com (select Unlock Bootloader). But here, too, everything is true only for Windows. And not just Windows, but only XP or 7. Because the drivers for the phone simply did not work on our eight. We have already downloaded everything that could be found on the Internet: Android SDK, HTC SDK, HTC Sync, and the left software for flashing firmware and searching for phone drivers. Nothing helped. They thought that the problem was either in the system or in the tube. Fortunately, it turned out to be the former. Therefore, if you are on Windows 8, don’t even try to do anything.

In general, everything is quite simple. The only thing that doesn't please me is that under Windows there are too many actions that need to be performed. Under OSX/Linux, everything turned out to be much simpler and faster: no SDK, no software hassle. Only one file and console.

So, what do we need for the firmware? Considering that no forums provide adequate instructions, I will write everything here. The information is valid for all operating systems.

The first step is to unlock the bootloader. You can do this by following the link above. Please note that if your phone does not go into fastboot usb mode, then the problem is in the system - it does not find a driver for it and you need to look for another computer. There are no other options.

Afterwards, you need to flash a new Recovery, which will allow you not only to update the system, but also to make backups, restore or reinstall it from any ZIP archives with firmware that are in the memory of your phone.
I used NoName Recovery, which I found on the Internet. Interestingly, it was the only one that worked for my version of the bootloader (HBOOT 1.28, which works with Android 4). You can download it.

To flash the new recovery, we will need the same fastboot file that we downloaded earlier to determine the bootloader key. We need to connect the phone in fastboot usb mode and write the following code in the console: fastboot flash recovery recovery_for_1.28.img and under OSX/Linux you must directly specify the paths to the fastboot and img files. You will be notified of successful firmware by two lines ending with Okay (in the console), but the phone will not show anything. Now we need to reboot the phone and upload the firmware to the root of the flash drive: Edited MIUI XL (upload it in the form in which you downloaded. There is no need to unpack anything)

Now we need to reboot into recovery again and select install zip from sdcard in the menu, then select our file and confirm the firmware. Everything will take no more than two minutes, after which the console at the bottom of the screen will say that the firmware update was successful. Now we need to return to the previous menu and select Wipe Data - we also confirm this (otherwise we will get a brick - the phone simply will not turn on). There is no need to do S-OFF, as they write on various forums - the firmware is already rooted and we don’t need any extra steps. We can safely select the Reboot option. The phone will take up to five minutes to boot, after which we will get a clean MIUI. Initial setup I advise you to immediately skip and install the keyboard through MassStorage (don’t forget to enable Unknown Sources in your security settings). I use this program: Swift Keyboard 3 (unzip to the root of the memory card and install via file manager). After that you can start setting up your phone. I've been using this firmware for less than a day. It seems to work well. Nothing crashed, nothing froze, and in general everything was fine. I am especially pleased with almost 500 free megabytes of RAM after 200 on my native firmware.

Also, please note that this firmware can be installed using the method I described only if your phone has ALREADY been updated to Android 4.0.3 (official) and the Russian language is not yet supported (English only). If you are updating from a second android, you will get a brick and may not even be able to log into the boot. In addition, all data on your phone will be deleted and you will not be able to restore the recovery to its original version, which will void the warranty on the device. You carry out all actions at your own peril and risk.

Good luck with your upgrade and enjoy using your now truly cool phone!
