Hello everyone, in this article I will show you and teach you how to set up an FTP connection in Total Commander. Let me remind you that FTP is a data transfer protocol, and is mainly needed for transferring files over a network, or the Internet. Today we will set up file transfer in Total Commander. All you need for this is Total Commander itself, and the access details for the connected node (Login or password, as well as the node itself where we will connect). Let's open our Total Commander, and in top menu select the tab as shown in the picture. Either a new FTP connection, or simply select “Connect to FTP server”

After this, we will have such a window, it shows a list of our FTP connections, etc. it is empty, we are adding a new one.

We click on the “Add” button, and a window appears with the settings for our FTP connection, or rather, it is necessary to fill in the fields with the settings to configure the FTP connection.

Connection name field: in this field you can specify any name for your connection, for example “Free FTP movie server”. Next, we configure the server and port of our FTP connection. This is a very important parameter; there should be no errors, because If you fill out this field incorrectly, you will not be able to connect to your FTP server. The server and port can be specified as the IP address of the server, or the site, ru address, and so on. After you have entered your server address, fill in the “Account and Password” fields. These fields are also required; without them, connecting via FTP will generate an error. We fill them out and click “Ok”, after that our connection is created. Here is an example of my FTP connection.

By clicking on the “Connect” button, I will connect to the remote directory via an FTP connection. After that, I can download the information I need. I would also like to say that you may have a different version of Total Commander, or the interface may be slightly changed, it all depends on the build and version you are using, but the principle of creating an FTP connection through Total Commander is the same. That's all for now, if there is anything you don't understand or have any questions, write to me, I will try to answer.

What is Total Commander?

This is a file manager that you can use to connect to your hosting provider's server, and it's also free software.

Where can I download?

How to upload a website to hosting using Total Commander?

To do this, the files and folders of your computer should remain in one window, and in the second window you need to establish an FTP connection to the server.

How to establish an FTP connection?

1 - Select “FTP” in the top menu.

P.S. These two steps can be replaced by pressing Ctrl+F.

3 - After that, click on the “Add” button.

4 - A window will appear in which we fill out the following forms:

Connection name - enter whatever you want here, usually this is the name of the site in any form.

Server[:Port] - here we write the address of the FTP server (host).

An account is a login for access via FTP, which comes in the first letters from the hosting provider, or you can find it in the hosting control panel.

Password - we take the password in the same place as the login.

If you encounter problems with access or you are using a proxy server, check the box next to “Passive sharing mode (like a Web browser).”

5 - After all this, the new connection you created will appear. Select it and click the “Connect” button.

In the future, you will not need to do all these steps, just press Ctrl+F and select the FTP connection you need.

How to change access rights to a file\folder?

In the top menu, select "File" - "Change Attributes".

Which FTP client is best to use?

By and large, it makes no difference which client you use, and you need to focus on the one in which you are more comfortable working and to which you are accustomed. The most popular free ones are Far Manager, Total Commander (described in this article) and Filezilla. We work with the Filezilla client because it is convenient for us and is more focused on FTP connections. We also do not recommend using paid FTP clients such as CuteFTP, etc. Especially when it comes to using hacked versions of paid products. Before using them, think that you will be entering data to access your site into a software product hacked by someone, and this person will easily be able to obtain this data.

Yesterday I received a letter to my inbox from a complete stranger, as I understood, a novice webmaster, in which he asked a question about how to access the root of a site via an FTP connection. The question is quite elementary, but this is only for people who have been dealing with this for a long time and often. But for beginners, this is really a problem that I also encountered in the initial stages of my activity.

So, what is the root of the site?? To put it simply, these are all the folders and files of your website or blog located on the hosting server. This is actually your site in the form of codes.

You can access the root of the site via an FTP connection. There are a huge number of file manager programs with which you can do this. I, perhaps out of habit, or maybe from the point of view of rationalism, do this, as a rule, in two ways, which I will discuss in more detail in this article.

The first way to establish an FTP connection is through Total Commander. Total Commander, by definition omniscient Wikipedia, is a file manager with closed source code, running on the platform Microsoft Windows . You can download it on the Internet from a variety of resources, links to which, given their multitude, make no sense. Installation Total Commander It is also quite simple and, I think, will not cause any difficulties for anyone.

How can you use Total Commander establish an FTP connection? Let's take a closer look. In the top menu of this manager you need to select the option “ Net" (in newer versions this is the option " FTP connection" or simply " FTP»).

When you left-click on this option, a drop-down menu opens down, where you, among other things, look for the option “ Connect to FTP server..." Also, when you click on it with the left mouse button, approximately the following table will open.

Since you do not have any connections yet, you should click on the " Add …", after which you will receive the following form.

Fill this form it should be as follows. In the line " Connection name:“You preferably enter an arbitrary name of the future connection in Latin letters. For example, I call the connection the first part of the site domain, so as not to get confused later when there are many connections (as in the example above). In the line " Server (port):» indicates either the IP address of the hosting server or the name of the server. This information can be obtained from your hosting website. It may be located in the sections " FTP connection», « Connection characteristics" or " Login to the server"(there can be quite a lot of options for section names, it all depends on the imagination of your hosting administrators). In line " Account:» indicates the designation of your hosting account, the form of which can also be quite arbitrary and depends on the imagination of the hosters. In line " Password:» indicate the password chosen by you or proposed by the hosting to enter the FTP connection. Leave all other lines as default and click “ Ok" After which your connection is created.

In order to go to the server at the root of the site, click the button in the right menu of the form “ Connect" Next, there may be several options for the content of folders on the server. When opening folders, look for the main folder of your site, which in the vast majority of cases is called public_html. Having opened it, you find yourself in the root of your site (its approximate appearance for a WordPress site in the figure below) and you can perform various manipulations with their content.

The second way to establish an FTP connection through a file manager FileZilla, which the same Wikipedia denotes as “ free FTP client" Why did I choose among the huge number of file managers FileZilla? Yes, precisely because it is free. You can download this manager on its main website filezilla.ru . Installation shouldn't be too difficult for you either.

On startup FileZilla, you will see its working field, which looks approximately like the one below. In this case, the contents of one of the computer drives you have selected opens on the left side, and on the right there will be the folders of the server on which your site is installed (the image can be enlarged by left-clicking on it).

To create FTP connections in the top menu (first in order from left to right), left-click on the button that has this image:

In the form that opens, select the button “ New site» and click on it with the left mouse button. Choose the name of the connection (site) as I described above. The image below shows a sample fill for connecting to the server that hosts this site.

You need to fill everything in a similar way by entering the values " Host», « Account», « Password», « User", taken from your hosting, in a manner similar to that described above. After entering the data, right-click the " Connect", after which you will gain access to the hosting folders, and in the folder public_html– to the root of your site.

To upload a folder or file to the root of your site, you need to find it on your disk in the left window of the manager that opens FileZilla, select with the left mouse button and after clicking right button select the option “ Upload to server».

That's it for the FTP connection! As you can see, everything is painfully simple! Now let’s try to implement everything described in practice, if you have any questions, write in the comments - I’ll definitely answer them.

Hello dear friends and regular readers of this blog.

Today we will set up FTP through Total Commander.

So let's get started. To set up FTP through Total Commander you need to do the following.

On the toolbar file manager Total Commander has an FTP button that we will need to click on when we need to log into our website.

Those who like to use keyboard shortcuts can press Ctrl-F. The following dialog box “Connecting to FTP Server” will pop up. Only the sign in the middle, with site addresses, will be empty at first.

But nature (and we agree with her on this) does not tolerate emptiness, so let’s immediately click the “Add” button and create the first line in this list.

You can write anything as the connection name, as long as you remember where you have what, but the rest of the data must be entered absolutely accurately, without the slightest mistake.

It’s even better to copy from the letter received when registering for hosting or, accordingly, from the site page on which all the necessary letters and numbers were written for you.

In the “Server” line the FTP server address is written. Usually it coincides with the address of the site itself (but not always), only FTP is added in front.

"Account" is often the same as account on the site itself, but here, as you can see, it was done differently: the provider issued a certain long series of numbers and letters as a name. Enter your password in the line - guess what? - Right! - A password issued specifically for accessing the FTP site, and not for logging into the control panel or accessing the database.

If you want to immediately get inside the folder with WordPress, in the line “Deleted. directory" enter the folder name and a forward slash (like this: publick_ html/, or this: htdocs/, or otherwise: www/). In principle, this is not necessary - you can enter the folder manually. Just think, an extra double click!..

In the same way, it is not necessary, but it is convenient to enter the address of the folder on your computer - with WordPress and its plugins, with pictures or other materials that you are going to transfer to the site.

Then the corresponding folder will be shown on one panel of the file manager remote computer(site), and on the other - your own. This second address is set in the “Local” line. Catalog".

Sometimes the site turns out to be impossible to work with standard mode- the connection attempt ends with an error message, despite the fact that all names-passwords-appearance-addresses are entered correctly. Then try checking the box “Passive exchange mode”. Often this is exactly what is required.

There are also some more valuable settings at the bottom of the window. Let's say you notice that after a minute or two of downtime, the site turns out to be inaccessible, the FTP server begins to suspect that you have left and, in any case, have not accessed it for too long - maybe you went out for a smoke or are chatting with a friend - and closes the session.

When you try to enter a folder or copy a file, you first wait for God knows what, then a message appears about the connection being lost, then the FTP client will offer to restore the connection and will restore it after a while.

To avoid this, check the box “Send a command to keep the connection active” and click OK.

In the “Command” list there are also several commands that Total Commander can send to the site (if this doesn’t work, try the next one). You can also change the time interval after which this command is sent - set 90 seconds or 60.

When you finally click OK, a new line will appear in the list of connections. To connect to a site, you will need to click on the FTP button (or press Ctrl-F), select the appropriate connection and double-click on it. You can click the connection once and click the Connect button twice.

And the “Change” button will allow you to make corrections to the Total Commandera FTP connection settings. If you entered the wrong address, you made a mistake with the password, or other settings need to be corrected.

In the screenshot below you can see the Total Commander file manager window.

On the right file panel - the site, on the left - home computer. What exactly is shown there and there, the title bar tells us, right above the list of files: on the left it says that we are on the C: drive, in the WordPress\Plugins folder, and on the right - on the site, in the folder www/all.blog-raskruti.ru/wp-content/plugins. You can switch to another drive by selecting its letter in the drop-down list at the top.

To enter a folder, double-click on it; to exit, if you are in the wrong place, double-click on the curved arrow with a colon in the very top line of the file list.

To move from one file panel to another, click once on any file or folder on the left or right. You can also press the Tab key.

So, I need to submit the plugin to the site. On the left I click on the folder of the required plugin (it is surrounded by a dotted frame), and then on the “F5 Copy” button.

You can simply press F5, the effect will be the same: the program will ask for confirmation, and if the connection has not been broken during the downtime, it will perform the action we need - forward the folder to the site.

And if you right-click on an unnecessary plugin and press the “F8 Uninstall” button, you can remove the corresponding plugin, even if this cannot be done using WordPress tools.

Third option: the ability to directly edit any text file, correct some configuration or style marking manually.

Click on this file on the site and press “F4 Edit”. The file will be sent to your computer and loaded into Notepad or another text editor. Make the necessary edits, save the file to disk and close Notepad. After this, Total Commander will ask you for permission to forward it to the site and replace it old version new.

And one last thing: the “F7 Directory” key will allow you to create new folder on the website (or on your computer - depending on which panel the dotted frame is located on). You will need to enter the folder name.

This is where I stop my story about how to set up FTP through Total Commander. I could go on for a long time, but this is not the place for this story... Thank you all! 🙂 And also read the post using WinSCP.
