After reading this article, you will learn:

  • connect to FTP server
  • download and upload files
  • use the site manager.

We will assume that you have already installed and launched the FileZilla client (installation guide).

Connection to the server

We will use this data for login. Replace them with your own to follow the working example in this tutorial.

Hostname: example.org Username: john Password: 7PjU#.J3

In this case, we fill out the Quick Connect panel:

Field Port: can be left blank if you are not using a specific port for connection.

Note: if you want to specify the exact port, for example, SFTP or FTPS, enter the hostname like this: sftp://hostname or ftps://hostname respectively.

Now FileZilla can be connected to the server. If the connection occurred without errors, the right "column" of the client will show a list of files and directories instead of a notification "Not connected to the server".

Navigation and window layout

Legend: 1. toolbar, 2. quick connection panel, 3. message log, 4. local panel, 5. remote (server) panel, 6. queue of transferred files (full-size version of the image)

In this step, we will become familiar with the layout of windows in FileZilla.

Under toolbar(1) and quick connection panel(2) in message log(3) messages related to file transfer and connection are displayed. Below you will see a list of files. In the left column ( local panel, 4) local files and directories are displayed, i.e. contents of the computer running the FileZilla client. In the right column ( server panel, 5) files and directories of the server to which you are connected are displayed. In both columns, the directory tree is displayed at the top, and the contents of the current directory at the bottom. Navigation is carried out by simply selecting items in a tree or list, as in any other file manager. At the bottom of the window there is file queue(6) with a list of files that have already been downloaded or will be downloaded.

Transferring files

We will now download the following files (or the ones you chose):

Website/ +- index.html +- images/ +- image01.jpg +- image02.jpg

Uploading files

To start with local panel go to the directory that contains the data you need (for example, index.html and images/). Now, navigate to the desired target directory on the server (using the list in server panel). To download data, select the appropriate files/directories and drag them from local V remote panel. After this you will notice that the files will be added to queue at the bottom of the window and, after some time, are deleted from there after uploading to the server (of course, if everything happened without errors). The uploaded files and directories will be displayed in the server list in the right column.

List of local and server files after downloading

Note: If you don't like dragging and dropping files, just click right click on the selected files/directories and click "Download"

Note (for advanced): If you have enabled filtering and uploaded the entire directory, only unfiltered files from this directory will be uploaded to the server.

Downloading files

Downloading files or entire directories essentially works the same way as uploading, you simply drag files/directories the other way around: from the remote panel to the local one.

Note: If you (accidentally) try to overwrite a file while downloading or uploading it, FileZilla will by default display a dialog box with different options (overwrite, rename, skip, ...).

Using the Site Manager

Once you're confident that you can transfer files (if not, practice it), you may want to add server information to your site manager to make future connections easier. Select an item Copy connection to Site Manager on the menu File, after which the site manager will be opened, and a new item filled with relevant information will be created in it. Notice that the name of the item is selected and highlighted - this means that you can enter a corresponding name to make it easier to find this item later (for example, enter domain.com FTP server- you can rename it later). Now close the dialog box by clicking on OK.

Next time, to connect to the server, just select it in the site manager and click Connect.

conclusions

We assume that you are now able to use the basic features of FileZilla.

One last note: most problems can be solved different ways. This guide describes the most obvious solutions - after spending some time working with the program and reading the rest of the documentation, you will probably find the most quick solutions for your tasks (for example, the toolbar contains buttons for frequently used commands; some of them respond to right-click).

If you are confident enough in your abilities, you may want to move on to the more advanced user guide to explore the remaining features not covered in the example above.

Various protocols are used to transfer data between computers. To connect to the server where your website data is stored and work with it, the FTP data transfer protocol is usually used. To implement this feature, they use special clients, one of which is FileZilla.

You can download the FileZilla FTP client from our website. It is one of the popular programs that supports all operating systems and secure connection. In FileZilla it is called FTPS - protection using SSL or TLS, or SFTP - an extension of the SSH protocol.

To connect with remote computer Using SFTP, you must enter the same information as in normal mode (username, server address and password), but the port must be different, depending on the hosting provider. On some it may be 2222.

To log in via FTPS, an SSH connection is used, where instead of the server name, the domain is specified, as well as the username and password.

Sometimes the connection can be prohibited. To do this, log into the server or hosting control panel and close access in the FTP section.

How to connect to a website using FileZilla

Open FileZilla. The entire interface is in Russian, so there should be no problems. To gain access to directories and files of the hosting or site server, you must enter data that is usually sent by email from the hoster. Here's what to do in this case:

  • In the program, click the “File” button and go to the “Site Manager” section;
  • Click on the “New site” button;
  • On the right, enter the connection information:
    • Host – server address or name;
    • Port – usually 21;
    • Protocol – FTP or SFTP;
    • Encryption – choose according to the situation;
    • Input type – Normal;
    • User – the username was sent to you by email from the hosting provider;
    • Password – the password is also in the letter received from the hoster.
  • To connect to the web server you need to click the “Connect” button.

In the window at the top you can see the connection status. First comes authorization, then obtaining a list of directories and extracting them. If you enter data incorrectly, red lines with errors will appear.

After connecting, in the first section, called “Remote site”, directories will be available in a tree form. When you expand each folder, the contents of that folder appear in the lower section.

Now you can fully work with the files.

What actions can you perform with data in FileZilla?

  • Any file from the host can be downloaded to your computer, and if you download several files, they can be added to the task.
  • You can create directories and files on the server;
  • You can delete, rename and move files to different directories.
  • It is possible to set access rights.
  • In directories, you can set file attributes, this is the same as access rights.
  • Downloaded files can be re-uploaded to the host by dragging the file into the program window.

Why do I get the “Invalid login” error when logging in?

More often this problem due to an incorrectly entered password. If you go to your email, the document sent from the hoster contains the following information:

  • Login details for the control panel - usually they are the same as logging in via FTP;
  • Specific FTP login details – login, password and host address;
  • MySQL database login details.

You may have been unable to contact the host via FTP using any means. Try contacting technical support your hosting provider.

It's worth trying to connect via a browser. If it works, then the problem is on the side software and it needs to either be restarted or reinstalled. To log in via FTP through a browser you need to address bar enter this command:

ftp://ftp_username:ftp_password@domain

Some browsers may not support this protocol, it is worth using modern browsers such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Opera.

What to do if the file is not uploaded to the hosting or is uploaded empty

This is usually due to exceeding the disk space quota - a certain amount of storage allocated for each user. You can find out whether the quota has been exceeded in the control panel of the hoster or server. If this theory is confirmed, the tariff characteristics will have to be increased, namely the free space on the hard drive or SSD.

If it is impossible to create a directory, then make sure that the name is not Cyrillic.

When downloading files, there are times when they weigh too much, so the download does not proceed normally. Uploading files is small in size.

Good day! It will be useful for all users planning to start creating websites or blogs to learn what FTP is and how to use Filezilla . File Transfer Protocol is a way to exchange data between local computer and a remote server.

About Filezilla

FileZilla is one of the best FTP clients with free license. And in this case, free distribution does not at all indicate any limitations of the program. Quite the contrary, FileZilla is in many ways superior to even most similar paid applications. And the enormous popularity of FileZilla is due to its superbly designed management system and extremely usable user interface.

As an FTP client, FileZilla allows you to download site files from hard drive computer to the hosting provider's server. In addition, FileZilla supports editing, updating, deleting and setting the properties of site files on a remote server directly from the desktop of a personal computer.

So, dear webmasters and bloggers, now you know FileZilla - what kind of program it is and you can get to work.

FileZilla – where to get it, how to install it and how to put it into use

Since the program is completely free, there is no need to look for distribution kits on random sites and through a third party. You can catch an evil virus and destroy a computer dear to your heart (and wallet). Just enter the coveted address of the official website of the FileZilla developer into the search bar of your browser and download the latest version.

You can download FileZilla in several versions, depending on your needs.

  • An installer for installing a program onto a computer disk.
  • Archive for use in portable mode. You can unpack the archive onto a flash drive and always carry with you an FTP client already configured and ready to work with the site on any computer.
  • Get source programs are for programmers and developers who want to bring their own innovations to the program.

How to install FileZilla on your computer? Download the installer and then follow the instructions of the program. The installation is very ordinary. If you want to use a portable version of FileZilla, just download the archive to any convenient folder on your computer disk and unpack it there.

  • For convenience, create a package called FileZilla.
  • To launch the application, click on the executive file filezilla.exe.
  • With help context menu(right mouse button) create a shortcut on the desktop.

If you have Launcher installed on your computer, add FileZilla to the list and assign hotkeys. For example – “Win+F”.

Getting started with FileZilla - an easy start

After installing the FileZilla program, how to use it to work with the site? Before you can use an FTP client, it's a good idea to secure a spot on a hosting provider's server. If you have not yet decided on the specifics of your mega startup, it is recommended to register for practice free domain and hosting.

  • After registering for hosting, you will receive an email Email data for accessing your site. Store this information in a dry, safe place. It is these little blue letters and numbers that you will need when you try to publish your site using

So, it is assumed that you have already created several HTML pages using a website builder, installed the FileZilla FTP client, how to connect to the server when everything is almost ready?

Setting up a connection and connecting to the server

The popularity of this program is largely due to the fact that the FileZilla setup is already done by default and you do not need to go to complete webmaster courses in order to upload your site to a remote server.

Second the method will work, if you have many sites. Then in the Menu click “ Site Manager”, enter the connection data there and create a new Project. In the future, you will be able to use this Manager to instantly connect to the desired site without filling out logins and passwords.

Working with a website using FileZilla

Usually, if all the data is entered correctly, the Internet connection is normal and the remote server is working, the connection occurs within a minute without any problems.

Working with FileZilla is done exactly as in Windows Explorer With local folders and files. You can copy or move files simply by dragging with the mouse arrow or using the context menu.

Occasionally it happens that using FileZilla it is impossible to connect to the server . Most often, problems arise due to erroneous user settings. Restore the default settings and re-enter your connection details.

Data transfer may fail if the user tries to upload too many files to the server at the same time. An overload occurs and the connection stops. It is recommended to set a data transfer limit in the FileZilla program settings.

Sometimes when you try to connect, a notification appears about an incorrectly entered password. This most often happens in cases where the user has always connected to the server on one computer, and when trying to access the site from another computer, an error occurs.

To solve the problem, go to the site control panel and change the password. After this the connection should go well.

That's all I have. See you soon!

Best regards, Evgeniy Kuzmenko.

Hello guys, FileZilla is not really a program, it’s like part of the name of two programs from the same company. I’ll say right away that the programs are wonderful and worthwhile, but not everyone needs them, because they are for advanced users... I’m wondering if, besides the name, there is a connection between Mozilla and FileZilla... but I haven’t dug into this topic yet, I’ll need to find out somehow. .

So. There are only two programs whose names contain the word FileZilla, these are FileZilla Server and FileZilla Client. I'll talk a little about each since I have experience using both.

What kind of program is FileZilla Server?

This is a program for organizing an FTP server directly from a regular home computer. You create a user there, write a login and password, then specify the FTP server folder and launch it. Here is the main window of FileZilla Server, a log of connected users and other information is displayed here:

To be honest, I’ve been using the program for a long time and I don’t remember how to start the server, for some reason I get an error, although it doesn’t seem to be there:

To manage users or groups, you only need these two buttons:

But they are now inactive for me, since I was unable to connect to the server, why I still don’t understand...

I’ll write a little more about the server itself. In general, after creating an FTP server, they will be able to access your computer in the folder that you specified in the settings. You can put something in such a folder, well, some files, and users will be able to download them from your computer. Well, that's it, just a note to you.

In general, I hope that it is approximately clear what kind of program this FileZilla Server is.

What kind of program is FileZilla Client?

Well, this program is already more popular, it is intended for reverse process, that is, to connect to an FTP server. You need a server, username and password and you will be able to connect. But there are public servers where no logins or passwords are needed. This is what the program looks like:

Here you go. Just for fun, I opened one public FTP server, this is the Opera server, anyone can go to it. Here is his address:

ftp://ftp.opera.com/pub/opera/win/

I entered it into the host field and clicked Quick connection, in the end I successfully connected:

To customize the appearance of the program to suit your preferences, you need to use these buttons:

I usually disable the second and third buttons, in the end the FileZilla Client looks like this and it seems more convenient to me:

You can get to the settings using this menu:

Well, what can I say? To change the settings here, you need to understand this a little. I think that one of the important settings is the number of simultaneous downloads or uploads. This quantity can be set in the Transfers section:

Don't change anything here unless necessary. Speaking of the programs themselves. If you think that a large number of transfers will speed up the process of uploading or downloading from an FTP server, then you are right. But as a rule, the servers themselves do not always like this, because the load seems to be heavy. If you are actively downloading or uploading something, then the protection on the server may work, they say, user, take it easy there, here’s a timeout for ten minutes. And then the server will ban you for ten minutes. Or, for example, only two transmissions will work, and the rest will be in queue. This is also not good...

How to completely remove FileZilla Server from your computer?

If you are wondering what FileZilla Server is, then you probably don’t need this program.. Still, administrators need it more than ordinary users

So let's get started. Click Start and select Control Panel:

In case you have Windows 10: this item can be found in the menu that appears after pressing Win buttons+X!

Then we find Programs and Components there:

Find FileZilla Server in the list, right-click and select Delete:

In the next window, click Uninstall:

Then there will be a window asking whether to delete the settings. They may only be needed if you install FileZilla Server again, and if you delete it permanently, then click here Yes:

After this, everything will be deleted quickly and Completed will be written:

How to completely remove FileZilla Client from your computer?

Well, you can remove it almost the same way as the previous one. You also open Start, do everything the same way

But in the Programs and Features window, find FileZilla Client in the list, right-click and select Uninstall:

Then click Uninstall:

Well, see for yourself, if you can, it’s better to do it right away...

In general, I told you how to remove FileZilla and what it is. I hope I wrote everything correctly, it’s accessible and you found the information useful.

I’ll also write this. Do you want to clean the system further? Well, remove everything left in Windows as far as FileZilla is concerned. If you think that this is difficult, then you are mistaken: you can clean the registry yourself and delete the remaining files from your computer. I wrote about this in an article about it, and I think everything will be clear there. Well that's true. My job is to offer, but you already think...

Good luck and all the best in life

Greetings to all readers and guests of the site. Anton Kalmykov is with you.

First of all, let's figure out what FTP is and why it is needed.

FTP is a file transfer protocol that allows you to upload various objects to your server, delete them, edit them, and of course, backup your blog. Without these manipulations this moment It is impossible to imagine a single successful blogger.

When I started working on our project, I initially tried to tinker with the code in the WordPress panel, but it was inconvenient and unsafe. You ask me why? Yes, because when I saved any changes and they did not lead to the desired result, I had to make a backup.

Now, I have created two directories on my computer. In the first, using Filezil, I copy the original files from the hosting, and in the second, I download the files with which I conduct all my experiments.

What is Filezilla and where to start?

So, let's take a closer look at my favorite, and not only mine, FTP client FileZilla. This is one of the most common and convenient free FTP client ov in the blogosphere.

Downloading and installing the program

First, you need to download and install the program on your computer. You can do this by following this link http://filezilla.ru/get/ to the official website of the developer and select the appropriate version.

After installation, you need to connect to your hosting by clicking on the File tab → Site Manager.

In the window that opens, click the “New site” button (1) and enter the name of your site (2).

Afterwards, in the “Host” field (3) insert the IP address of your server. It is given to you when you purchase your hosting, most often by email. It will also indicate “User” and “Password” (5)

By the way, to activate the login and password fields in the “Login Type” field (4) in the drop-down menu, select “Normal”. Well, to connect, don’t forget to click the “Connect” button (6).

If you did everything correctly, then in the first window you will see that “Connection has been established.”

Filezilla interface and features

Now let's take a closer look at the interface of our program. Visually it is divided into two parts.

The first part is the Local site (2, 3). In it you see the contents of your computer (disks, folders, files). The second part is the Remote site (section 4, 5). In them we see the objects of your hosting.

For a beginner, before getting started, I would recommend creating a backup copy of all blog content on your computer.

How to create a backup

To do this, on any disk other than the one where you have installed operating system, create a directory and copy all files from the remote server into it.

Let's look at how to do this in more detail, and at the same time learn how to work with the program.

Click the cursor on any file or folder in window No. 5. Afterwards, using the Ctrl+C key combinations, select the entire contents of window 5. Next, press the right mouse button and a drop-down menu appears, using the functionality of which you can copy, create, delete everything that you think is not necessary, add to task, etc.

I would like to immediately warn inexperienced users that after deleting a file from the server, it will no longer be possible to restore it, because FileZilla doesn't have a recycle bin feature like Windows does.

So, I somehow digressed from our educational program, in the drop-down menu we select “Download”. At the same time, do not forget to check that the directory you created in advance is open in window No. 3.

In my case, this is “Test” on drive D (this can be seen in window No. 2 and No. 3). Well, now we have created backup copy our site, and at the same time we learned how to download files from our hosting to our work disk.

Example of working with files

I would like to note that the transfer of the required object to the server must be done in the same order, the only difference is that the selection occurs on the left side (Local Site area).

Many will ask, what is all this for, why download it to a computer, what will it give me?

Let's take a look small example: you need to fix the index.php code. We find it on the server and download it to our folder on the computer.

Note: Please note that you should not use to edit files. standard program Notepad in Windows, because When saving, the encoding may change and the content may not display correctly. To edit the code, I recommend using Notepad++.

You can read a more detailed description of it on our blog in one of the following articles. And so as not to miss -

If the opening occurred in another program, then we find our file on our disk, in my case, I click on the Start menu → Computer, select Local disk D and go to our “Test” folder. Next, I right-click on index.php and select “Open with” from the drop-down menu.

In the window that appears, find Notepad, select it, also do not forget to check the box “Use the selected program for all files of this type” and click “OK”.

Now you can safely work with this object.

I will tell you in more detail how to work with Notepad in the following articles.

Once you have edited your file, save it and simply drag it into zone 5.

Since the file already exists on the server, the program will clarify your actions. Don’t be alarmed, in the window that appears, simply select “Overwrite” and click OK.

Well, now we have figured out what an FTP client is and how it can be used when working with your blog.

I hope I was able to tell you about all this in an accessible language. Please do not judge me harshly, because this is my first article :). If you have any comments or suggestions, write them in the comments.

Here are a couple more useful programs:
