It is unlikely that the great science fiction writers of yesteryear expected that they would fail with a seemingly reliable theme - . Or rather, with the lack of the power that was unanimously predicted for them. But the tasks of the batteries, which we decided to test in the next annual examination, are much more mundane: turning starters and helping generators. This time we are checking the “European” ones, which fit into the dimensions of 242x175x190 mm. Different manufacturers have fit into this volume of just over eight liters declared capacities from 60 to 66 Ah. In total, we purchased 28 batteries from company stores: with receipts, guarantees, etc.

All that remains is to compare their actual power supply. This is where modern science fiction begins...

Judge for yourself: the spread in the original reserve capacity is 17-fold. For some reason, the weight indicated on the label exceeds the true weight by kilograms. And five batteries were afraid of the Russian frost of three tens of degrees!

No, the science fiction writers were clearly optimists. But our numbers are real.

The measurements were carried out by specialists from the Research Center AT 3 Central Research Institute of the Russian Ministry of Defense. The test results refer to a specific sample of batteries and are not general criteria for their quality.

HOW THE POINTS WERE ASSIGNED

Based on the measurement results recorded in the protocol, points were assigned: in each type of test, the best and worst results were taken, assigning them 5 points and 1 point, respectively. All other participants received intermediate points according to the position they occupied between the leader and the outsider. For example, if, when measuring reserve capacity, the leader showed a result of 124 minutes, and the outsider - 81, then the participant with a result of 105 minutes received 3.23 points. And so on for all five types of tests. The final score is the arithmetic average of five intermediate scores. We did not introduce weighting coefficients that increase the significance of one parameter in relation to others: all parameters were recognized as equivalent. The figures we present allow anyone to make their own calculations. It is clear that the arrangement of seats will certainly change.

Reserve capacity

Shows how long a car with a damaged alternator will last. An expert will say differently: how many minutes will it take for the voltage at the terminals of a battery delivering a current of 25 A to the load to drop to 10.5 V. Measurements are carried out at a temperature of 25 °C. The higher the result, the better.

The best result was shown by MULTI: 124 min.

Worst - avtoSil: 81 min.

Reduced starting energy by declared current

Characterizes the battery energy in starting mode. The test is carried out at -18 °C. First, the battery is discharged with the declared cold cranking current Ixp for 30 s, then the voltage U30 is recorded at its terminals. After a pause of 20 s, the battery is discharged with a current equal to 60% of the declared Ixp until the voltage at the terminals drops to 6.0 V. The discharge time t6 is recorded. The reduced starting energy is calculated using the formula:

The higher the final score, the better.

The best result is MEDALIST: 28.21 kJ.

The worst is “Kursk Accumulator” 6 ST‑60N: 10.37 kJ.

Reduced starting energy with a single current

Allows you to compare the current characteristics of all batteries under the same conditions, regardless of their rating data. The test is carried out at -18 °C. First, the battery is discharged with a current of 450 A for 30 s and the voltage U30 is recorded at its pole terminals. After a pause of 20 s, the battery is discharged with a current of 270 A until the voltage at the terminals drops to 6.0 V. The discharge time t6 is recorded. The reduced starting energy is calculated using the formula:

E = 135(U 30 - 6.0)t 6.

The higher the score, the better.

The best result is MEDALIST: 34.73 kJ.

The worst is “Kursk Accumulator” 6 ST‑60N: 6.86 kJ.

Reduced starting energy with a single current at -29 °C

Similar to previous tests, the only difference is the temperature. The higher the score, the better.

Best result - VARTA: 8.85 kJ.

The worst are “Kursk Accumulator” 6 ST-60N, START. BAT, “Podolsk battery” 6 ST-62N, ACDelco M62-H3, Energizer PLUS EP60-L2X:

they all gave up before the end of the test.

Reduced starting energy with a single current after testing for vibration resistance

Vibration resistance is an indicator of the build quality of a product.

The batteries are mounted on a wooden pallet in the back of a heavy truck and shaken for 16 hours on cobblestones. The root mean square value of vibration accelerations in the frequency range 0.7–22.4 Hz is 2.77–4.29 m/s².

Measurements of current characteristics are carried out according to the method of the previous paragraphs. The higher the score, the better.

The best result is a-mega Innovative Hybrid 6 ST-60-A3: 34.82 kJ.

The worst is “Kursk Accumulator” 6 ST-60N: 9.33 kJ.

QUESTION ANSWER

- Why do batteries produce the declared current for such a short time when tested? If the capacity is 60 Ah, then arithmetic dictates: a current of 600 A should be delivered for approximately 0.1 hour, or 6 minutes. But the real count is only tens of seconds...

The fact is that at this current the battery capacity is no longer 60 Ah, but much less: approximately 20–25. The inscription “60 Ah” only means that for 20 hours at a temperature of 25 ºC you can discharge your battery with a current of 3 A (60:20), and no more. At the same time, at the end of the discharge, the voltage at the battery terminals should not drop below 10.5 V.

Estimating capacity in ampere hours is very inconvenient. And measuring it in these units is simply illiterate: the product of current and time does not give the capacity, but the amount of electricity, which is otherwise called charge. The unit of quantity of electricity is the coulomb. 1 C = 1 A s. Accordingly, 1 Ah = 3600 C. The term “reserve capacity” is much clearer, showing how many minutes the battery will last in a car whose generator has failed.

- Is it true that if you install a battery with a larger capacity than the standard one, it will be undercharged, and the starter will fail due to excessive current?

Not true. What will prevent the battery from charging fully? Here's an analogy: if you scooped up a glass of water from a bucket or barrel, then to restore the original level of liquid you will need to add the same glass from the tap - both into the bucket and into the barrel. As for the expected breakdown of the starter, its current consumption will not change, even if the battery capacity increases by a factor of a hundred or a thousand. Ohm's law does not depend on ampere hours.

Talk about future breakdowns is only appropriate for extreme sports enthusiasts who are accustomed to getting out of the swamp on the starter. At the same time, the latter, of course, gets very hot, and therefore a low-capacity battery can save it from fatal overheating, dying first... But this is a hypothetical case.

BATTERIES IN FACTORIES DO NOT LEAD LEAD INTO BATTERIES. WHO IS GUILTY?

- Is it possible to assess the condition of the battery by the voltage at the terminals?

It's approximately possible. At room temperature, a fully charged battery, disconnected from loads, should produce at least 12.6–12.7 V.

- What is hidden behind the term “calcium battery”?

The Ca (or even Ca-Ca) icon on batteries is increasingly present today. We are talking about very small (fractions or units of percent) additions of calcium to the alloy from which the plates are made. If it is added to both positive and negative electrodes, then the same Ca-Sa is obtained. All other things being equal, such batteries are more difficult to boil, which is important for maintenance-free batteries. They also have less self-discharge during storage. Therefore, batteries with traditional antimony additives (usually indicated by the presence of plugs) are almost never found on sale today.

FIVE BATTERIES COULD NOT WITHstand THE FROST!

- Why choose a battery with a declared current of, say, 600 A, if the real need is half that?

The declared current is also an indirect indicator of the quality of the battery: the higher it is, the lower its internal resistance. In addition, in severe frost the oil thickens and the current increases.

- What is better - serviced batteries or maintenance-free ones?

Batteries that still have access to banks are leaving. Such products - let's call them serviceable - are best suited for old machines with unstable mains voltage, in whose batteries water can boil away. For a modern car this is unnecessary: ​​a new battery is simply placed under the hood and forgotten about for several years. Note that even in a new car it costs nothing to ruin the battery in a week. Night winter starts, a full range of switched-on power consumers, short runs in traffic jams - under such conditions it does not have time to recharge from the generator and slowly dies.
