Starting with the iPhone 4, Apple has equipped smartphones with LED flash. A special LED indicator, designed to improve shooting in low-light conditions, is located on the back of the device next to the camera. In addition to the main function, the flash also performs other tasks, including notification of calls and SMS messages, and is also used as a flashlight.

In the latest modifications iPhone Apple began to use not the usual, but a double True Tone flash: one of the diodes carries an alternative tint to maintain the white balance at the proper level. When the flash is in flashlight mode, only one of the LEDs turns on by default. Using a simple trick, you can force iOS to turn on both flashes at once to achieve a brighter glow. Find out how to do this later in our instructions.

Step 1: Swipe up to open Control Center, a standard interface element of the latest versions of iOS.

Step 2: Press the button to activate Flashlight mode to turn on the LED light.

Step 3: From Control Center, turn on Camera. The standard shooting application will launch on the screen, and the LED will turn off.

Step 4: Now press the Home button to close the Camera. Immediately launch Control Center and press the Flashlight button again. This time, iOS will turn on both LEDs and the flash will become brighter.

On July 23, a rather interesting project of an external synchronized LED flash iblazr for smartphones and tablets was presented on Kickstarter. Collections are active, and 250 of the simplest discount offers have already been sold out. It’s not only the device itself that’s interesting, but also the fact that it’s being created by a team of developers from Ukraine led by Vlad Tislenko.

“The idea of the outbreak appeared a year ago. I am a big fan of photography, like most of our team, and over time I began to notice that I was using a DSLR camera less and less and more often using a smartphone. At one point, I realized that a smartphone is quite enough to take high-quality photographs, because in 99% of cases these photographs are shown on the phone itself or on social networks. In addition, every year the cameras in smartphones improve in quality and characteristics, and smartphones occupy all the leading positions in terms of downloads to the Internet. But there is one significant drawback to all this - all camera phones are useless in the evening and at night. Realizing this problem and seeing great potential, I took on the development", - said author of the idea: Vladislav Tislenko for 3DNews readers.

At first, he worked on the flash himself until the first results and achievements appeared, then the iblazr project began to attract more and more attention. Vlad had to look for some like-minded people and specialists, while others found him on their own. “I can say that the idea itself has little value. But when there is a working prototype and a real vision of how it will develop further, new people and new opportunities begin to appear around the idea. Now a whole team of professionals in their field is actually working on the project.”, he explained.

It should be said that this is the world's first portable synchronized flash for smartphones and tablets. As the developers note, the idea itself is not new - others have already tried to implement it, for example in the iFlash product, but no one was able to synchronize light with the camera shutter. In other words, previously it was just a stand-alone flashlight that was not connected to a mobile device. In iblazr, Ukrainian technologists managed to solve this hardware and software problem.

It was not easy to overcome the difficulties in the area software. As Ivan Chuba reports, working with Apple devices is much easier due to the standardization of the product line, in contrast to Android solutions, represented by models from a variety of manufacturers, with different cameras and firmware versions - all this complicates software development.

The team admits that it faced difficult challenges and several times the project was on the verge of stopping, but all stages were successfully completed, and now it has several fully functioning prototypes in its hands. The last milestone - Kickstarter - was also overcome: on August 2, the goal was reached - the required minimum amount of $58 thousand was collected to begin mass production and enter the international market.

The developers pay attention to every detail when creating this unique product, designed to fundamentally change the quality of shooting from smartphones and tablets. iblazr solves several basic problems: photographing and video recording in dimly lit places, eliminating red-eye and white-eye, adjusting light intensity to avoid over- and underexposure.

The flash connects to a mobile iOS or Android device via a 3.5 mm audio jack and is controlled via a special free mobile app, synchronizing with the camera shutter. The device can work as a flash for photography or constant illumination for video recording and video communication, the latter is possible thanks to the application's support for both rear and front cameras. Among the program's functions are brightness adjustment, a special filter that improves image quality, automatic modes, support social networks and other functions, the number of which continues to expand.

The iblazr hardware is a block measuring 32 x 30.5 x 9.4 mm, on one side of which there are powerful LEDs American company CREE, emitting light at a wide angle of 60°. In flash mode, the illumination level reaches a significant 200 lux, and in constant backlight mode - 160 lux or 180 lux for the aluminum version.

iblazr does not load the battery mobile device and has its own 200 mAh battery, providing over a thousand flashes. The same feature allows you to use it as a flashlight, capable of continuously shining for 40 minutes, and in energy-saving mode - up to 3 hours. The kit comes with a flexible leg that has a USB port on one end and a 3.5mm jack on the other. While charging, iblazr can serve as table lamp or keyboard backlight.

The flash will be released in three options: plastic black, white or aluminum cases. The first two cost $39, and the metal version costs $59. The launch of production is scheduled for November, and the device will be shipped to customers in December.

The developers have created an SDK to integrate iblazr support into third party applications and for a fee they provide it to those who wish even before the launch of the device. Among the programs where support for the Ukrainian flash will be introduced: iOS - 645PRO Mk II, PureShot, FieldCam, 6x7, 6x6, Vizzywing, Flashlight, Fast Camera; Android - Fast Burst Camera, Ultra Burst Camera.

A few warnings

  • The flash will only flicker when the lock mode is on. And this is well thought out by the manufacturer: there is no point in the flash lighting up when the phone is in your hands and you are actively using it.
  • Flash during calls is an additional power consumption and therefore your iPhone may quickly run out of charge if you receive frequent calls. You need to think about the importance of this function. At the very least, you can take care and buy an external battery if the iPhone is used to its fullest.
