Of course, I would like to call Dying light the new Dead Island, but this is unlikely to be the right conclusion. Yes, Dying Light was created in the image and likeness of previous zombie games from Techland, but, in fact, it is just a good mixture of modern gaming trends: zombies, parkour, open world, RPG, survivalism, crafting, a little blood, an adequate Hollywood plot and fun multiplayer.

There may be a misconception that Dying Light is just another Dead Island, which should be recommended with extreme caution. In many ways this is true, because he did not correct all the shortcomings and shortcomings of his predecessor, and he added several of his own.

But at the same time, Dying Light has some kind of hypnotic ability to chain you to the screen, when you don’t know what you’re doing, but you continue to do it anyway - and you can end up spending ten to three hours doing this activity. I got about that much.

So, on the third try, Techland still managed to make a decent zombie game. Of course, in Dying Light you can point out a lot of shortcomings: there is a cliched script with stupid dialogues, and obvious copying of the plot and design ideas of Far Cry 3. Brief information about the game, and sometimes unobvious controls. But these disadvantages do not drag the game down. It’s very exciting here to jump on rooftops, fight monsters during the day and run away from them at night - and in practice it turns out that nothing more is needed to have a good time. If Dead Island wanted to be rebuilt, starting from the foundation, then in Dying Light you only need to touch up the facade. Perhaps the question of the best zombie action of the year has already been decided.

However, if we skip the technical part, Dying Light turned out to be an excellent game in which I personally really enjoy spending time. Even when the storyline is completed and everything is known, it is very interesting to play here, digging through quarantine zones and running away from monsters, some of which are people.

The only question I have after everything I’ve seen is that we should soon see Dead Island 2 (from a different development team), but is it necessary? Will they be able to surprise us after everything we have seen? A question that still remains unanswered.

It's so good when you finally find yourself. You continue to move in this direction and develop with gusto to achieve perfection. The developers of Dying Light and Dead Island have found their direction, and it seems that all their games will work according to the same scheme. And fans of such games, it would seem, don’t need anything more.

Overall, Dying Light is a wonderful mix of borrowed game mechanics. If you like zombie settings and games such as Mirrors Edge, Bulletstorm, Dead Island or Far Cry 4, then you will like this next creation of the Poles. In turn, we can only be glad that Techland and Deep Silver (publisher of Dead Island) once did not share the rights and the developers were able to release a completely new game, which became a breath of fresh air for all fans of zombie games.

The shortcomings of Dying Light in the form of a blurry ending, a small number of types of zombies and not the best implementation of nightlife are easily forgiven. Fast movement around the world, a well-thought-out development system, side quests with unpredictable developments, changing game rules depending on the time of day, pleasant multiplayer with the opportunity to feel like in the shoes of a monster - due to this, the game becomes one of the best zombie killers. Making complaints about the same type of missions in a cooperative action movie with an eye toward leveling up the protagonist is, to say the least, stupid. Moreover, the tasks alternate, the arsenal is constantly replenished with new toys. Even the plot does not evoke negative emotions, which is rare for such projects.

Dying Light is entertaining for the first few hours, and then you realize that the game has nothing more to offer. Well-made parkour, a primitive combat system, exploring a city full of zombies - in fact, there is nothing else here. The plot retains a little intrigue, but this is not enough to tighten it properly. The idea was great, the execution was a little let down. If there were more diversity in the project world, everything would have turned out differently. In any case, this is one of Techland's best developments.

Dying Light good game with bad elements. It is very interesting to combine under one roof the incredible progress of the studio in terms of images and new ideas for game mechanics with equally incredible stagnation in the form of a depressing crafting and auto-leveling system. If the campaign had been able to abandon its much-loved developments, we could well have seen a parkour breakthrough in the gaming industry. At the moment, we have a good craft with a lot of rough edges that can try to brighten up the fun of playing cooperatively or a truly thriller-like feeling of vulnerability at night. And congratulations to Techland for developing their ideas. You see, soon the team will be able to show the world a completely worthy project.

Kitsch, fast-paced, sometimes very scary, in an open world - Dying Light tries to be several good games at the same time, and in many ways it succeeds. In some places the level of technical execution is lame, sometimes zombies walk through walls - but these are the Techland Poles: they have managed to make very good, but slightly uncouth games before.

Traditionally, Dying Light has multiplayer - regular co-op and a zombie game mode in which you can invade other people's games as a super-powered infected. Co-op, like in Dead Island, is frankly not an acquired taste, and the zombie mode is generally an incomprehensible and unpopular thing. On the one hand, this mode has potential, on the other hand, there are very few people willing to let a human-controlled uber-monster into their game. Limited resources and significant penalties for death clearly have an impact.

Dying Light turned out to be one of those games that you pin your hopes on and wait for, but even if your expectations are not met, you will still play it, since the game, at its core, is one big sandbox with an open world. Techland still tries to walk the fine line between zombie slasher and survival horror. Oddly enough, they succeed!

Only the PC version, which we evaluated, failed. The forums were absolutely bursting with negative messages about the game's poor performance. For us, Dying Light behaved extremely unpredictably. Even after the release of patches, the number of frames per second jumped wildly at any graphics settings. If not for this unfortunate omission, the final score would have been clearly higher.

Dying Light is also full of various secrets, references and simply interesting finds. On your way you will meet real psychos, crazy artists and simply desperate people. There are also normal individuals among them who still retain hope for a bright future, but there are very few of them. At the same time, almost every additional task Someone's personal drama is hidden in the game. One asks to save his son. Another is to bring a box of chocolates and a favorite movie for mom. Deceased. The Poles have created a fairly harsh and truthful atmosphere of a zombie apocalypse, in which you don’t really want to find yourself.

And it’s boring to turn on traps. But running, jumping, climbing, sliding - this may not be much more difficult, but incomparably more exciting. The parkour in the game was simply excellent - not as complex and elegant as in Mirror’s Edge, but also not the one-button, press-space-and-run primitivism of the Assassin’s Creed level. Everything is very easy, smooth, impressive - it’s not for nothing that David Bell himself took an active part in the development. Once you take off, you enter into a completely special rage, which, together with the brutality of the battles, amazingly covers up all the other shortcomings of the game. Despite all its flaws, Dying Light has an inexplicable appeal that both Dead Island and many other similar projects were completely lacking. More than 40 hours fly by in one breath, leaving behind not a hint of regret about the time and money spent. Isn't this the best praise for the game?

Technically, Dying Light is far from ideal. The picture is excellent, but the developers didn’t bother with optimization, which is why the game coughs and sneezes even on powerful machines. I would like to believe that with patches it will still get better - after all, the locations are not inferior to Kirat from Far Cry 4 in beauty and are worked out to the smallest detail. Particularly impressive is the contrast of light and shadow, which creates the lion's share of the atmosphere. Walking through abandoned buildings and ornate tunnels, you willy-nilly recall the gloomy dungeons of Metro 2033.

The most frustrating part of the game is the zombie invasion. IN random moment(the frequency of invasions can be set in the menu) a person joins the game and takes control of a super-zombie. “Eggs” appear on the map, 5 groups of 3 pieces each, and the parkour player must destroy them. The task of the super-zombie is to prevent him from doing this, using several types of attacks. In addition to the fact that the mutant flies at incredible speed, he also kills with one blow. At the first stages of the game, this mode looks like torture, so many people simply turn off the possibility of random invasion. In addition, it is worth noting that only a person who has purchased a special DLC can play as a super zombie.

Otherwise, Dying Light is really fun to play. First person view and good implemented system parkour helps you to immerse yourself in the world of the game. The style of play that changes with leveling up (for example, having got a cat, you begin to feel almost like Spider-Man) significantly diversifies the game and allows you to achieve the fact that Dying Light begins to become boring only towards the end of its 30-hour (story + additional missions) adventure.

It’s true that it’s impossible to recommend the game to everyone; some will definitely find it not diverse enough - it definitely lacks everything that was originally stated, but what it does, it does well.

Dying Light did not turn out to be a clone of Dead Island, but on the contrary, it brought the first-person horror genre to new level. Dynamic combat, fast-moving enemies and exciting parkour allowed Techland to create a product with high replay value that will replace Dead Island, Dead Rising and cooperative zombie shootouts in Left for Dead 2.

Dying Light is a good game, it's hard to argue with that. It's hard to argue with the fact that there are plenty of bad elements in it. If you're still not tired of zombies, play it. If you missed Dead Island at one time, play it. If you are looking for how to have fun with friends in co-op, play it.

However, Dying Light is still a good game, and certainly better than Dead Island. It turned out to be very exciting - something like Borderlands: you upgrade the hero’s skills and gain more and more power and cool, spectacular ways to deal with enemies. True, the fact is that while the Gearbox game has its own charm and humor, then DL has nothing but parkour. But this, as it turned out, was not enough to become a truly memorable game.

In a nutshell, the review for Dying Light goes like this: Techland's new game is a lot like Dead Island, only it has parkour and the action has moved from the tropics to a virus-infected city.

You will spend at least 30 hours on the highly addictive world of the game, and this is if you are not distracted enough by side quests (skipping which would be a stupid act, because they are done with soul). And everything around is done with great love and conscientiously. You can start to disassemble the game into components from other games, but look at the main thing: Dying Light is a high-quality set of zombie-themed ideas in a beautiful package and much more than just “Dead Island slept with Mirror’s Edge.” A new reason to talk about “Polish development” as something really good and stable.

Everything would be fine, but in the first half of the game you are forced to learn skills that are quite basic and unremarkable. It is not very clear, for example, why an agile tracer should separately master a tackle, and then also learn to kick in the process. The authors' imagination apparently ended with such restrictions, which is why the best treats become available too late. It’s scary to think that you have to endure seven hours in order to be allowed to smear yourself with zombie guts for camouflage!

Albeit with difficulty, not without problems, but Techland managed to create the illusion of an infected city. And it’s even interesting to run around this city (don’t miss the second map!), collect some items, look for collectible figurines and hope that the next side quest will be unusual. Dying Light is noticeably better than Dead Island and more exciting than Dead Rising 3, but the mission design, co-op and competitive multiplayer are such that this game is unlikely to keep you on the console for more than one playthrough.

Dying Light becomes a little more fun in multiplayer. There are two options here: co-op for four and competitive mode “Become a Zombie”. With the first, everything is clear and familiar - we rush around the city and offend zombies in the company of comrades. All skills are preserved, the game becomes a little more coherent and meaningful for a while. Especially in a number of tasks that seem to be designed specifically for playing together(clearing quarantine zones, for example). With the competitive mode, everything is not so good: playing as a zombie, of course, is fun, but quickly gets boring. Perhaps with the next patch everything will be corrected, especially since the game surpassed the mark of a million copies sold in just a week.

There are a ton of side quests, and they will take at least a dozen hours to complete. The trouble is that you have to run back and forth a lot. No matter how much parkour refreshes the game, you still get tired from the constant fuss. Please note that you will be doing approximately the same thing in the plot, so the more often you are distracted by side missions, the more you want to quit the game.

And in vain, be patient - even if by the second half of Dying Light it begins to get boring (and, frankly, annoying), it’s worth getting to it at least to see the old city. The atmosphere becomes completely different. There are not so many games in the scenery of the East, and if you, like me, sigh for the original Assassin’s Creed and Revelations, be sure to get to the end.

Despite some limitations, Dying Light is Techland's best zombie game so far. It's a smarter, more fun version of Dead Island that manages to mask its own shortcomings with acrobatics, new mechanics, and a heady sense of freedom—at least for a while. Although the game soon becomes boring, rest assured: jumping into piles of rubbish, the sounds of crushing skulls and nighttime chases across rooftops will remain in your memory for a long time.

Once again, I was insidiously deceived by the exhibition impressions: it feels like for a couple of years at Igromirs I was playing a completely different game - in a good way. There is progress. And to your personal account. A vulgar lack of money cannot easily finish off a lively Polish company. An obvious attempt to rehabilitate itself after the successfully ruined Dead Island franchise was doomed to success. Previously controlled by Warner Bros. was able to turn another gray action game in the universe of The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion into something that could, if not win, then compete for getting into the Top 10 games of 2014 in a couple of nominations. And now the publisher has created a small miracle with another compilation in the survival horror genre, painstakingly earned by the hardworking employees of Techland. The limit of Polish zombie dreams, such a tiny crown (that word came out again, it just won’t go away). Will we wait for Hellraid?

...And here we come to probably the most annoying, albeit not too interfering with the game, problem of Dying Light - the plot stupidity, only enhanced by the lack of plot stinginess. Such flighty special agents as Kyle Crane simply cannot exist in the real world - well, such slobberers are not recruited for potentially dangerous tasks of infiltrating and seizing valuable data. And the plot itself suffers from overly naive and predictable twists. There are enough characters, you get attached to many of them very easily, and in general they are likable, and the desire to help them somehow in itself is formed with a bang, but the way they are treated within the script is too obvious and poorly executed an attempt to squeeze a tear out of the players. It’s really a shame for the main villain: where it was possible to make the ultimate scumbag and scoundrel for a long time, he is turned into an outright corrupt skin with a clotted brain...

Parkour zombie action is original. Previously, of course, you also had to run away from the walking dead on the rooftops, but here this is the main feature of the gameplay. And she’s really good, but it’s a pity that she can also become boring.

The graphics are beautiful, but there is one complaint about it - it is terribly demanding on hardware. Without a good video card (console), there’s no point in even meddling here.

A good game for all Dead Island fans. If at one time you found it boring and unimpressive, then you will have the same opinion about “Dying Light.” Here, of course, there are no these arcade-pop-up numbers, but everything else is preserved.

A first-person open-world action adventure, Dying Light lets you plunge headlong into the world of the zombie apocalypse. You will find leveling, role-playing elements, a large open world and a dynamic change of day and night.

During daylight hours, you will have to explore the metropolis in search of supplies, equipment and things from which you can create weapons. The arsenal includes axes, knives, bats, hammers and more exotic things, as well as weapons for destroying the enemy from long distances. At night, dangerous creatures come out - the infected population and the most dangerous predators, which you will have to fight off until the first rays of dawn.

Game world

Dying Light takes place in the fictional Middle Eastern metropolis of Harran. Traditional low-rise buildings are adjacent to mid-rise panels, high-rise buildings and a couple of skyscrapers. When designing the map, they even took into account the economy - there are slums, simple high-rise buildings and brick houses, as well as elite areas with mansions and towers.

The developers have worked on the inside of most of the houses, in addition, every building in the game can be entered, but the larger it is, the more likely it is that some spaces will be inaccessible. There are also suburbs and large open spaces.

Harran looks like it's rush hour - there are a lot of cars on the streets, some highways are stuck in traffic jams, and construction cranes stand still waiting for work. At the time of the events of the game, the city is in complete desolation, some buildings are burning or partially destroyed.

The feature of the city is the ability to quickly move - any steep ledge can be used as a platform on which you can jump or catch on in order to move on, cables are stretched everywhere, and the character uses a grappling hook and clings to any point.

Gameplay

The main threat in Dying Light are aggressive zombies, who are prescribed different logic of behavior. They are often in a daze, but if you disturb them, they will go berserk and attack.

And this is where it comes in handy - the hero jumps on roofs, slips through cracks, clings to walls, uses fences and buildings as natural barriers to avoid the fate of being eaten alive. If you have to fight zombies, you have a whole arsenal at your disposal.

Weapons in Dying Light are divided into three types: melee (axes, bats, machetes, circulars), throwing (bows and arrows, bombs, grenades) and firearms (pistols, machine guns, rifles and shotguns). Each is useful for a specific situation: at a distance it is most convenient to kill zombies with a firearm, at a dagger distance - to stab them with melee weapons, and in close combat to fight back with your hands and feet, throwing zombies away.

The protagonist also uses various ammunition (shields, armor) and equipment (first aid kits, potions, master keys), which can be bought from NPCs or crafted from collected loot.

The peculiarity of the combat system is the improvement of weapons, ammunition and equipment. To do this, in the game world (they can also be obtained from merchants or for completing tasks). Melee weapons have the most options: for example, a hammer can turn into an unstoppable weapon of destruction, receiving an area damage effect with additional electrical damage.

Zombies are an important part of the gameplay; in the solo playthrough there are ten types of them, from ordinary “infected” and more powerful “bruisers” to dangerous “jumpers”. The former often do not pose much danger even in large crowds. While three-meter “destroyers” break everything in their path, and due to their mass they will have to be hammered for a long time.

The most dangerous zombies - "jumpers" - will chase the player across roofs and buildings, deal several hits in one attack, have high health and are incredibly fast. More often than not, the player is forced to run away from them rather than fight.

Plot and characters

The game begins some time after the spread of an unknown virus, when most of the survivors have fled, and the few remaining are fighting off hordes of zombies.

The main character, undercover agent Kyle Crane, lands in Harran to obtain data on the study of the virus, and also to prevent local radical terrorists from creating a biological weapon from it.

Everything immediately goes wrong - Kyle is ambushed and bitten by zombies, but at the last moment he is saved by a community of survivors defending themselves from zombies and bandits. He needs to complete a mission, for which he decides to stay and become the best among parkour runners.

And although the events of Dying Light are told in several impressively choreographed acts, they concentrate on the action - kill this, steal that, run there and defeat the main bandit. As the player progresses, he will see a dozen minor characters who play the role of furniture, and only the antagonist makes any effort to play.

Techland scriptwriters have collected as many clichés as possible - an unkillable main character; a villainous villain who loves to talk; girlfriend in the form of a “damsel in distress”; invented complications just to move the story forward; problems with logic and character motivation; exceptional predictability of what is happening and the absence of plot twists.

Single player game

If we ignore the plot, then Dying Light is a classic “entertain yourself” attraction, in which there are a lot of activities and activities: you can explore the game world and look into every house, kill a lot of zombies and improve your skills, look for valuable items and weapons to upgrade or complete quests.

Even basic mechanics like movement and combat are mini-games of sorts. In a cramped urban environment, it is interesting to determine the route and use all the parkour opportunities, so o fast movement you forget.

Finding yourself in a crowd of zombies, you need to combine different styles combat and parkour, and firearms will not be the most convenient. Each zombie has its own weaknesses, knowledge of which will allow you to kill much faster.

The change of day and night greatly changes the gameplay - at first, most of the tasks have to be completed during the day, while the zombies are in “hibernation”, since at night they are more aggressive and stronger, in addition, much more dangerous mutants crawl out of their holes. The same “jumper” is capable of breaking the player’s plans and driving him back to the safe zone.

The main task is to develop your character. There is leveling and a simple RPG system. When a character kills zombies, searches the area, creates new weapons, and completes NPC tasks, he gains experience, which adds up to levels. For each level you get points that can be spent on new abilities in the categories of “acrobatics”, “strength” and “survival”.

Role-playing is provided by a system of dynamic encounters - all non-plot events occur in random places and are determined randomly. The player will have to help someone or destroy someone, and if you ignore the requests of the NPC, this will affect the state of Harran.

Co-op game

In Dying Light, you can play through the story or simply in the game world in teams of up to four people. The connection is established through the menu, the inviter becomes the host (you need to go through the prologue).

During story missions, players receive a common set of key items and watch the same cutscenes together, so there is no need for everyone to play separately. As for the adventures in the game world, they are similar to the actions in the solo playthrough, but much more fun, since searching for loot, exploring dangerous zones and bullying zombies is much easier.

There is also an asynchronous mode, when a team of human players faces off against a zombie player. But not an ordinary one, but a “night hunter” - the most dangerous subspecies, enhanced by the ability to see in the dark, quickly move over vast distances and kill with one blow.

To win, people need to destroy special “nests,” while zombies need to kill all the people without exposing themselves to fire and ultraviolet radiation.
