The .jpg filename extension refers to digital photography files or digital images that are associated with the JPEG file format specification. The joint photographic experts group, or JPEG for short, is a file format from the "lossy image" class of image formats. Many devices including smartphones with inbuilt cameras and professional digital SLR cameras support the JPEG/Exif file format natively. Such support allow images captured on these devices to be stored directly into the jpg format without conversion. Efforts towards standardization of the JPEG format first begun in 1992 with ISO/IEC 10918-1:1994

svg Scalable Vector Graphics

SVG or Scalable Vector Graphic File is a graphical format for images which are bi-dimensional and XML-based providing support to animations and various interactive elements. The SVG file format was developed with the open standards created in 1999 by the W3C (Worldwide Web Consortium). Adobe Corporation held the significant role towards the development of this file format, and it is considered to be the industry standard for viewing vector graphics on web networks. SVG images can be created, edited, and recreated in any of the text editing tools and drawing or illustration software. Additionally, SVG can be compressed, searched, scripted, and indexed.

The usual formats JPG, PNG and GIF are extremely popular, but due to their features they are not ideal, and in some cases they are simply inapplicable. And it was specially invented for such cases. SVG format.

For example, on so-called “adaptive” sites, images that look equally good on screens of any diagonal (read, regardless of width or height) are absolutely necessary. And the mentioned JPG, And when forcibly stretched/enlarged, they look very different and often bad.

Moreover, often on a website (including ours) the same picture can be used both as a post thumbnail and as a full-length illustration in the same and/or in another post.

As a rule, from one such image the site automatically creates several copies at once different sizes, from which the one that is best suited for a screen of a certain diagonal is then selected (this is in general terms). Thus, several versions of one image must be constantly stored in the site’s library, which is no longer considered an optimal solution these days.

The SVG image is a vector image. This means that it can be easily scaled (increased/shown) without losing quality. That is, if we return to our example with the site, the SVG format allows you to save only one picture on the server, which different pages site and on different screens will look the same quality (ideally).

Another advantage of the technology Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) is that files in this format “weigh” relatively little. This gives webmasters some flexibility when it comes to changing something in such files. Moreover, some changes can be made directly in CSS editor, which is very convenient.

An example of using SVG is this work by a famous blogger Terence Eden, who, as part of an experiment, faithfully translated the logos of the largest Internet companies into this format. As you can see, the “weight” of each logo is less than 1 kilobyte, and for some it is less than half a kilobyte. Yes, standard logo in PNG it weighs 20 kilobytes, and in SVG it is only 397 bytes.

That is why SVG is often saved on websites. , buttons and various icons. But for photographs and drawings, especially those that depict several objects at once, SVG is less suitable (or not suitable at all).

Now, actually, about how to convert JPG, PNG or GIF to SVG format

Let us immediately note that further we will talk about online services that are very convenient to use for converting files online. Information about professional software tools for working with vector graphics (Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, LibreOffice Draw, etc.) you can easily find on the Internet.

There are also plenty of online converters these days. But, as it turns out, when it comes to the quality of conversion, their range is sharply reduced. And what’s most unpleasant is that this is not found out immediately and purely by trial and error.

However, recently having been puzzled by the issue of finding an online service for converting a logo from PNG to SVG and after purposefully testing almost three dozen googled converters, we have compiled for ourselves a small list of the most suitable (in our opinion) resources:

  • Aconvert — accepts both ready-made files from your computer and URLs of pictures. An option to change the image resolution is available. After conversion, the logo to SVG turned out to be of sufficient quality, but it “weighs” twice as much as the source file in PNG.
  • Vector Magic — the service is paid. There is an online version ($7.95 per month registration required) and a Windows application (offered on the same site for $295). Automatic and manual modes are provided. We used the experiment for the sake of online option Vector Magic. And I must say that it pleasantly surprised me with its functionality and the quality of the final result (I liked the ability to compare the resulting SVG image and the source and select the quality of the final SVG file).

  • Vectorizer — the service is free and is especially interesting because, among other things, it also has an automatic editor function and a Wizard in which you can set conversion parameters. And after setting up, Vectorizer began to produce SVG files that were on average a third lighter than PNG sources with equal image quality.

The simplest way to trace an artwork is to open or place the file in Adobe Illustrator and automatically trace it using the Trace Image command: Illustrator Help. Using the Image Trace Tool - CS6

*Even simpler):
Using software, the image/picture/drawing/photograph you provide is converted into a vector for 1(!) euro ->Image to vector

=== Online services ===

  • The first one is paid, although two images to start with can be created for free.

In English, although it’s not difficult to understand. There are two options for using it – online or buying a computer program. The price for online use (unlimited) is $7.95, the desktop program costs $295.00. It is possible to order manual tracing.
Of course, you can find cheaper ones on freelance portals, but the choice is up to everyone.

Above are some comparison images of Vector Magic, Adobe Live Trace (CS6) and Corel
Corel PowerTRACE (X6). Pay attention to the careful processing of shapes by Vector.

Ease of use

You do not need to install and know a great many options and settings to achieve an acceptable result.

You just need to answer a couple simple questions and that's all. If the result is not satisfactory, there is a “troubleshooting” manual where you can easily find the answer and solve the problem.

You can try again and again until you get a satisfactory result.

In general, you can transfer this work to Vector and do more creative tasks.

The translation is loose, but the meaning is something like this.

Source images in JPG format, GIF, PNG, BMP and TIFF. The result is in three quality options and in three formats: EPS, SVG and PNG. Upon completion, it is possible to repeat with a different desired quality and some editing.

  • Next, completely FREE .

Completely in English, but everything is clear in use. A little more settings And self made, but it's worth it.

  • allows you to convert images to . You can either upload a file or provide a link to the image. It is also possible to apply digital effects.

In the case of converting raster images (PNG or JPG) to SVG format, shapes and objects will be converted into black and white vector graphics that are scaled without any loss of quality. Such images can be colored using free programs on working with vector images (etc.). Photographers in most cases will not achieve the desired result when converting bitmap to SVG format.

If you are converting any vector image(for example, eps or ai format), the converter will try to preserve all vector and color data, and will also ensure that the two files are as similar as possible.

The Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) format converter allows you to convert files of more than 130 formats. Conversion directions:

JPG is one of the most popular image formats in use today. Its main advantage is the ability to store images good quality in files small size. This is possible due to the type of compression used. The mechanism of this type of compression prioritizes some parts of the image over others, preserving high-quality areas of the image that are most visible to the human eye.

SVG- This vector format an open standard that uses XML markup language and can contain animated or interactive graphics. SVG was created by experts World Wide Web, an organization that promotes the development and interoperability of web products and offers these products freely. SVG files are supported by most web browsers and can be created in drawing programs or text editors.
