What is slow motion?

Both techniques are used to manipulate time to make the viewer see events in an unusual way. Time-lapse photography is a series of photographs taken over a long period of time and then stitched together into one sequence of frames. She evokes in me associations with a filmographer. It's hard to see movement in any given frame, but if you stitch them together and play them back and forth, you can tell a whole story.
Why bother with slow motion?
Basic set of equipment
To do simple time-lapse photography, you'll need four things:
- Camera
- Tripod
- Intervalometer (a tool that programs the camera to take a certain number of frames at a given interval - more on this later)
- Video editor (optional)
I bet that if you read articles about photography, you already have at least some kind of camera. You don't need a super professional model for slow motion photography. Timelapse can be recorded even using a smartphone! Some models even have a built-in time-lapse feature that's very easy to use—just press a button. You record a timelapse, and the phone automatically stitches the sequence together and displays finished video. He does just a wonderful job! Using tools like these is the easiest way to try time lapse, but keep in mind that you have little control over the shooting process or any editing you may need to do later. If you want to try this method, there are many time-lapse apps available.
Time lapse doesn't require a lot of equipment; you can start even with a smartphone, GoPro or DSLR.
Another simple option for taking time lapse is to useGoPro. Hero 6, 5 Black, Hero 5 Session and Hero 4 support two time-lapse functions - Video and Photo. The Hero 5 and 6 also have an option called “Nightlapse”. GoPro is a more flexible option, offering more options than a smartphone. You can set the interval time, resolution (4K, 1080p, etc.), as well as the field of view. Some cameras, like this model from Nikon, have a built-in interval timer (intervalometer) for slow-motion shooting. You can set the delay time between shots, the number of shots, the start time of shooting, and whether to enable exposure softening between shots.
Some newer DSLRs have a time-lapse feature in addition to an intervalometer. Just like a smartphone or GoPro, it stitches the photos together and at the end you get a video file instead of a series of photos. My Nikon D810 has this feature and it does a great job if you need it faster and easier.
It goes without saying that you definitely need a tripod. Something as simple as a GorillaPod or Platypod is enough. Shooting a timelapse takes several hours (or even days!) and holding the camera in your hands all this time is simply unrealistic. If what is happening or the subject you are filming is fast enough to be filmed handheld, then you can shoot a video, right? Another reason to use a tripod is to ensure that each frame is identical to the previous one except that the subject changes.
Planning
What makes a good slow motion subject? Basically, anything that changes in any way over time will do. Classic examples include clouds floating across the sky, moving shadows, flowers, melting ice, or the sun rising/settling. Really, the possibilities are endless! When planning a time-lapse photography, it is worth remembering that the composition should be chosen in the same way as for regular photographs. The same principles apply. Consider whether the sun's position and weather will change during the shoot, and whether exposure settings will need to be adjusted.
If you want to make your slow motion more cinematic, consider adding music. Many photographers recommend choosing a track first, and then choosing which type of timelapse will suit your mood. I'll admit, I haven't had the chance to use this advice yet, but the idea of being more intentional and thoughtful about how you shoot makes a lot of sense to me.
If you plan to publish your video anywhere, it is best to use royalty free music, especially if you're just getting started. I'm using Audioblocks from Storyblocks and so far I'm happy with it. Make sure to bring plenty of spare batteries and clean memory cards! They are being wasted at an incredible rate. It's amazing how quickly batteries drain and SD cards fill up when shooting in slow motion. Their number depends on the duration of the shooting, size and number of photographs.

Slow Motion and Camera Settings
The key to getting a successful time lapse is to get the settings right. Determining the optimal parameters is not that difficult, but since every situation is different, it may take a little practice.
When selecting settings, you should consider the following things:
- How fast is the subject moving?
- Interval (pause between photos)
- Video clip length
- Frame rate (number of frames/s)
- Shooting time (this depends on the subject)
- Shutter speed
- Number of pictures taken
The first thing to consider is how fast the subject is moving, as this will help determine what the interval will be. For example, shooting fast-moving clouds requires a very short interval (just a couple of seconds) between shots to be able to capture as much movement as possible. On the other hand, if you are filming an opening flower, the interval should be large (a couple of minutes or more).
It is often better to take more pictures than required. It's much easier to throw away a bunch of unnecessary frames than to end up in a situation where there aren't enough of them and end up with choppy video. I had to own experience experience this unpleasant situation while filming a moonrise in slow motion. In the end, not enough photos were released, so it was not possible to capture the smooth movement of the moon.
Other things to think about include the length of the final clip and the frame rate. If you plan to stitch together several different time lapses, the length of the clip will likely be determined by the music you choose in advance. For example, some songs have a downbeat every fourth second, while others have a downbeat every eighth. Of course, you can change the length of each clip in post-production, but it's best to think about this in advance so you can take enough photos. Although frame rate is considered part of the final processing process, it also plays an important role in the calculations. Normal frame rate is 24 frames/s, but when working with slow motion, 30 or even 60 fps can be used if the movement is very fast. We'll talk about editing later.
Shutter speed also plays an important role when determining settings for time-lapse photography. I recommend shooting in manual mode to avoid any unplanned changes in exposure that may occur. Set the shutter speed according to your aperture and ISO. Some photographers recommend keeping your shutter speed low (1/3-3s) so that there is a bit of motion blur in each shot (you'll also need to adjust your aperture and ISO accordingly). This trick will help make the final video smoother and reduce flickering. The barn building video above was made without using this tip and I'm now wondering if it would have been less jerky if the shutter speed was longer.
Now let's look at an example together
Let's say we plan to make a time-lapse of the Milky Way. We know that this is a slow moving entity and it will take several hours for it to move a noticeable distance. When doing astro photography, the shutter speed is usually 20-30 seconds (this depends on the lens and camera). In our case, we will set the shutter speed to 25 seconds. We want the final clip to be 10 seconds long and have 24 fps. Since we need to minimize any gaps in the movement of the stars, the interval between shots will be 2 seconds.
How many photos will be needed?
24 fps * 10 s = 240 frames for 10 second video
How long will it take?
240 frames * (25 sec shutter speed + 2 sec interval) = 6,480 seconds = 108 minutes
Fortunately, there are special timelapse calculators that can help speed up these calculations. This is very convenient when you need to decide how many memory cards to take with you. Editing
Ugh! We are almost there! It's time to edit our timelapse. I'll now briefly cover a couple of processing methods and point you in the right direction in case you want to look into this issue in more detail. One way is to use Lightroom and Photoshop. You import all your photos into Lightroom as usual. If the light was constant during the shoot, I recommend editing the first shot and then synchronizing the adjustments with all the others in the Develop module. This effect can be partially conveyed using the so-called Ken Burns effect. It was this that was used to create the time-lapse given at the very beginning of the article. The Ken Burns effect is a camera shifting and zooming technique used to simulate the movement of a still image. To do this, you specify two sections of the frame, as well as a start and end time. After this, the program itself “moves” the camera from the starting point to the ending point. The effect can also be used for slow motion. Although it doesn't look as professional, the overall feeling is conveyed.
- Shoot in landscape mode! It's a pity that this thought did not come to me when photographing the Milky Way. That timelapse was taken in portrait mode because I wanted to capture as much of the sky as possible, but this meant that the photos couldn't be brought to a 16:9 aspect ratio without cropping out a lot of them.
