TIFF format(Tagged Image File Format) - format for raster images. A special feature (at least for me) is that multiple images can be stored in one TIFF file. When viewing, you open one file and flip through the pages (images/drawings) inside it. Personally, I haven’t used this yet, but I came across this format once at work. Sent 3 images in one TIFF file. It turned out to be very convenient. Nothing will be lost and you need to send not 3 but 1 file. These are like archived files, but you don't need to unzip them to view them.

One of the popular document storage formats is PDF. But sometimes you need to transform objects of this type into the TIFF raster image format, for example, for use in virtual fax technology or for other purposes.

It is immediately necessary to say that convert PDF to TIFF using built-in tools operating system will not work. To do this, you need to use either online conversion services, or specialized software. In this article we will just talk about methods for solving the problem, using a computer installed software. Programs that can solve this issue can be divided into three groups:

  • Converters;
  • Graphic editor;
  • Programs for scanning and text recognition.

Let's talk in detail about each of the described options using examples of specific applications.

Method 1: AVS Document Converter

Let's start with converter programs, namely the Document Converter application from the developer AVS.

  1. Launch the application. In the block "Output Format" click "In the image.". The field opens "File type". This field requires you to select an option "TIFF" from the drop-down list provided.
  2. Now you need to select the PDF source. Click in the center "Add files".

    You can also click on a similar inscription at the top of the window.

  3. A selection window appears. Go to where the PDF is stored. Selecting an object of this format, click "Open".

  6. The specified path will become visible in the field "Output folder". Now nothing prevents you from launching the transformation process itself. Click "Start!".
  7. The reformatting procedure begins. Her progress is displayed in the central part of the program window in percentage terms.
  8. After the procedure is completed, a window pops up providing information that the conversion has been successfully completed. It is also suggested to move to the directory where the reformatted object is stored. If you would like to do this, please click "Rev. folder".
  9. Opens "Conductor" exactly where the converted TIFF is stored. Now you can use this object for its intended purpose or perform any other manipulations with it.

The main disadvantage of the described method is that the program is paid.

Method 2: Photo converter

The next program that will allow you to solve the problem posed in this article is the image converter Photo Converter.

  1. Activate Photo Converter. To specify the document you want to convert, click the icon icon «+» under the inscription "Select files". Select an option from the drop-down list "Add files". You can use Ctrl+O.
  2. A selection window opens. Navigate to where the PDF is stored and mark it. Click "OK".
  3. The name of the selected document will be displayed in the main window of Photo Converter. Down on the block "Save as" select "TIF". Next click "Save" to choose where the converted object will be sent.
  4. A window is activated where you can select the storage location for the final bitmap. By default it will be stored in a folder called "Result", which is nested in the directory where the source is located. But if desired, the name of this folder can be changed. Moreover, you can select a completely different storage directory by rearranging the radio button. For example, you can specify the direct folder where the source is located, or even any directory on the disk or on media connected to the PC. In the latter case, move the switch to the position "Folder" and click "Change…".
  5. A window appears "Browse folders", which we have already become familiar with when considering the previous software. Specify the desired directory in it and click "OK".
  6. The selected address will be displayed in the corresponding field of the Photo Converter. Now you can start reformatting. Click "Start".
  7. After this, the conversion procedure will start. Unlike previous software, its progress will be displayed not as a percentage, but using a special dynamic green indicator.
  8. After the procedure is completed, you will be able to take the final raster image in the location whose address was specified in the conversion settings.

The disadvantage of this option is also that Photo Converter is paid program. But it can be used for free for 15 days trial period with a processing limit of no more than 5 elements at a time.

Method 3: Adobe Photoshop

Now let's move on to solving the problem using graphic editors, starting with, perhaps, the most famous of them - Adobe Photoshop.

  1. Run Adobe Photoshop. Click "File" and choose "Open". Can be used Ctrl+O.
  2. A selection window opens. As always, go to where the PDF is located and once it's highlighted, click "Open…".
  3. The PDF import window opens. Here you can change the width and height of images, maintain proportions or not, specify cropping, color mode and bit depth. But if you don’t understand all this or you don’t need to make such adjustments to complete the task (and in most cases this is the case), then just on the left side select the document page that you want to convert to TIFF and click "OK". If you need to convert everything PDF pages or several of them, then the entire algorithm of actions described in this method will have to be performed with each of them separately, from beginning to end.
  4. Selected page PDF document will appear in the Adobe Photoshop interface.
  5. To convert, press again "File", but this time select not from the list "Open…", A "Save as…". If you prefer to operate using hotkeys, then in this case use Shift+Ctrl+S.
  6. Window opens "Save as". Using the navigation tools, navigate to where you want to store the material after reformatting. Be sure to click on the field "File type". From a huge list graphic formats choose "TIFF". In area "File name" You can change the name of the object, but this is not a necessary condition. Leave all other saving settings as default and click "Save".
  7. A window opens "TIFF Options". In it you can specify some properties that the user wants to see in the converted bitmap, namely:
    • Image compression type (default - no compression);
    • Pixel order (default is interleaved);
    • Format (default - IBM PC);
    • Layer compression (RLE by default), etc.

    After specifying all the settings according to your goals, click "OK". However, even if you don’t understand such precise settings, you don’t need to worry too much, since the default parameters often satisfy your needs.

    The only advice is that if you want the resulting image to be as light in weight as possible, then in the block "Image Compression" select an option "LZW", and in the block "Compress Layers" set the switch to position "Delete layers and save a copy".

  8. After this, the conversion will be performed, and finished image you will find it at the address that you yourself designated as the save path. As mentioned above, if you need to convert not just one PDF page, but several or all, then the above procedure must be performed with each of them.

Flaw this method, like previous programs, is that the Adobe Photoshop graphic editor is paid. In addition, it does not allow bulk conversion of PDF pages, much less files, as converters do. But, at the same time, using Photoshop you can set more precise settings for the final TIFF. Therefore, preference should be given to this method when the user needs to obtain TIFF with precisely specified properties, but with a relatively small volume of converted material.

Method 4: Gimp

The next graphics editor that can reformat PDF to TIFF is Gimp.

  1. Activate Gimp. Click "File", and then "Open…".
  2. The shell starts "Open image". Navigate to where the target PDF is stored and label it. Click "Open".
  3. Window opens "Import from PDF", similar to the type we saw in the previous program. Here you can set the width, height and resolution of the imported graphic data, and apply anti-aliasing. But the main thing is that you can select several pages to import at once or even all of them. To select individual pages, click on them with the left mouse button while holding down the key Ctrl. If you decide to import all PDF pages, then click the button "Choose all" in the window. Once the page selection has been made and other settings have been made if necessary, press "Import".
  4. The PDF import procedure is in progress.
  5. The selected pages will be added. Moreover, the contents of the first of them will be displayed in the central window, and at the top of the window shell other pages will be located in preview mode, and you can switch between them by clicking on them.
  6. Click "File". Then go to "Export As...".
  7. Appears "Export images". Go to that part file system, where you want to send the reformatted TIFF. Click on the inscription below "Select file type". From the list of formats that opens, click on "TIFF Image". Click "Export".
  8. Next a window opens "Export image as TIFF". It also allows you to set the compression type. By default, compression is not performed, but if you want to save disk space, then set the switch to the position "LWZ", and then press "Export".
  9. Convert one of PDF pages in the selected format will be executed. The final material can be found in the folder that the user himself assigned. Next, it redirects to the main Gimp window. To proceed to reformat the next page PDF document, click on the icon to preview it at the top of the window. The contents of this page will appear in the central area of ​​the interface. Then perform all the previously described manipulations of this method, starting from point 6. A similar operation should be performed with each page of the PDF document that you are going to convert.

The main advantage of this method over the previous one is that the GIMP program is absolutely free. In addition, it allows you to import all PDF pages at once, but you still have to export each page individually to TIFF. It should also be noted that GIMP still provides fewer settings for adjusting the properties of the final TIFF than Photoshop, but more than converter programs.

Method 5: Readiris

The next application with which you can reformat objects in the direction you are studying is the image digitization tool Readiris.

  1. Launch Readiris. Click on the icon "From file" in the form of a folder.
  2. The tool appears "Entrance". Go to the area where the target PDF is stored, highlight and click "Open".
  3. All pages of the marked item will be added to the Readiris application. Their automatic digitization will begin.
  4. To reformat to TIFF, in the panel in the block "Output file" click "Other".
  5. Window opens "Exit". Click on the topmost field in this window. A large list of formats opens. Select an item "TIFF (images)". If you want to immediately open the resulting file in an image viewing application after conversion, check the box next to the option "Open after saving".   6. After these actions on the toolbar in the block "Output file" icon will be displayed "TIFF". Click on it.
  7. After this the window opens "Output file". You need to navigate to where you want to store the reformatted TIFF. Then click "Save".

It is possible to convert PDF to TIFF using a number of different types of programs. If you need to convert a significant number of files, then it is better to use converter programs that will save time. If it is important for you to accurately establish the conversion quality and properties of the outgoing TIFF, then it is better to use graphic editors. In the latter case, the period of time for conversion will increase significantly, but the user will be able to set much more precise settings.

TIFF is a so-called container format, or a format that can contain different types of image data compressed with different codecs. Thanks to this, TIFF is a very flexible format that can combine different images in one file, different color depths can be used, various ways compression, etc. Everything is built on so-called tags, which can be used to describe the contents of the file, the organization of the data, its size, the compression method used, etc. For example, the compression method inside a TIFF image can be JPEG, ZIP, RLE, or no compression at all - all the necessary tag descriptions are in the TIFF file header.

Greater freedom in the formation of various tags and packaging various types data inside the TIFF format sometimes causes difficulties in reading and understanding the contents of the files. Therefore, even today, data for general use, where there should be a wide range various programs, are saved in TIFF format without compression and with 24-bit color depth (8 bits/channel).

TIFF format – color depth and layers

Color mode and depth. The big advantage of the TIFF format compared to JPEG is the ability to work with color depths other than 24-bit (8 bits/channel). TIFF, thanks to tags, can store images where each pixel has only 1 bit (black/white), where each pixel consists of 8 bits (1 byte), or: 24 bits (typical RGB colors images with 24-bit depth), 48-bit (RGB color images with 48-bit color depth), etc. Can save , and other color models specific to specific device. TIFF image format – description of compression types

As already mentioned, using tags you can compress data in a TIFF file using various methods. TIFF image format, however, allows you to save data even without compression, which is convenient for achieving high compatibility and for saving maximum quality file. Therefore, this option is often used for archiving images, for storing various intermediate versions, or for transferring data.

TIFF offers different kinds compression to make the file smaller (it all depends on the editor in which you work with TIFF). Lossless compression is typically used:

  • LZW- similar to lossless compression in . But recall that due to row-by-row compression, the result is worse if the picture changes little in the rows.
  • RLE- a very simple compression method, which basically just replaces repeating sequences of identical numbers with their number.
  • ZIP- a popular format used lossless compression to transfer any data between computers.
