Hello, dear readers of the blog site. I decided to write a short note about how you can convert a document created in Word into the more popular reading formats PDF (for reading on computer screens, laptops and tablets) or Fb2 (for reading on portable devices with a small screen).

Actually, to convert to PDF (there is also an alternative, but it is less widespread), you can use the built-in converter in Microsoft Office Word, but it will be too cumbersome, so let’s look at a couple more options.

Another question is why such a need might arise? Well, for example, I more or less understand only the capabilities of Word, and I’m not ready to master some other specialized editors (for example, for preparing documents in PDF format). However, sometimes there is a need to post documents online or send someone by mail (free manuals, e-books, etc.). Word is great for creating these files, but reading in it is not customary (and not convenient). That's why we have to use converter to more popular readable formats, such as PDF and FB2.

Word to PDF converter - several options

First option to get PDF file and, as I mentioned above, use converter built into Microsoft Office Word the version you are currently using. Those. You first create a document in this wonderful text editor (with pictures and all the necessary elements), format it accordingly, but when saving you choose a slightly different format from the default one (PDF).

In this case, you can choose the saving option: with best quality or "for the Web". The final difference in file size will, however, not be very noticeable. The default optimization option creates a PDF file significantly larger in size than the original Word document. The option for the Web simply “works wonders”, and in fact is not much different from the first (in my case, the weight reduction was only five percent and the final PDF file still turned out heavier than the original Doc).

doPDF - a universal converter of any document to PDF

Therefore, I suggest you try another option Word converter to PDF. He imagines himself as a tiny utility, namely free PDF converter doPDF(version 8.0.911 is current now). It installs as a virtual PDF (you can see it when viewing the list of your printers in the panel Windows controls). Therefore, doPDF is a universal converter to the PDF format from any program in which the document can be printed.

It installs like a regular program, but at the beginning it asks you if you need to install an add-on for Microsoft Office Word:

After installing doPDF, you can open the same document in Word (or some other text editor - WordPad, NotePad or any other where you can print the document on our new virtual PDF printer). In general, you will need go to document printing settings(in Word this is the large round button in the upper left corner and the “Print” option).

In the window that opens, you need to select our new PDF printer “doPDF 8” from the drop-down list:

By clicking on the “Properties” button, you can select any resolution from 72 dpi to 2400 dpi, and after clicking on the “OK” button you will be offered (highest, average and “so-so” - if there are no pictures in the document, then you can safely select last option). If the document does not use standard fonts Windows, it makes sense to check the “Embed fonts” box to include these font sets in the final PDF document (this will increase its size).

There is also a checkbox that allows you to immediately open the resulting document in the default program specified for it immediately after converting Word to PDF (I use Foxit Reader). When I set the minimum quality of the final document, my file turned out to be twice as light as when using the built-in Microsoft Office Word converter.

If, when installing doPDF, you did not uncheck the box installing add-ons for Word, then on your toolbar this graphic editor will appear new inset(on the right), where there will be tools for saving the document in PDF format and a button with settings. Essentially, all settings remain the same:

Convert DOC to PDF using Apache OpenOffice

If you do not have the Word editor installed (after all, it is paid), and the doPDF utility for some reason was not installed or did not work properly, then there is another option for converting a Word document into a PDF file. This package can help us with this Open Office (free alternative Office from Melkomyagkikh). For example, I have Apache OpenOffice installed, which can be downloaded for free on the official website using the link provided.

Actually, the analogue of Word in this package is called OpenOffice Writer and it works great with DOC documents. When you open a Word file in this editor, you will find a corresponding “PDF” button on its toolbar. All that remains is to use it and select a location to save the final file.

What is noteworthy is that the converter from OpenOffice Writer turned out to be the most effective and made it possible to obtain a PDF file half the size compared to what the Word converter created (from the same source in DOC format), and the quality did not suffer at all ( unlike the doPDF utility discussed above).

How to convert DOC to FB2 for reading on gadget screens?

Well, in conclusion, I would like to say a few words about the utility, which can convert a document created in Word into FB2 format. Personally, I use the latter all the time to read books on the go. It supports graphics and is very good at adapting to any screen size, unlike the same PDF, which will have to be viewed on a small screen with horizontal scrolling, and this is terribly inconvenient.

Well, somewhere like that. If you have other options to solve these problems, then I allow you to voice them in the comments(usually requests to be voiced go unheard, so I pin my hopes on the arrogant “I allow” - suddenly it will touch you and have an effect). Thank you.

Good luck to you! See you soon on the pages of the blog site

PDF editor is always with you!

The name PDF2Go speaks for itself. You can convert PDF files to Word or rotate document pages on any device in any browser. You don't need to download or install anything.

Edit PDF files anywhere on your computer, smartphone or tablet - any operating system will do, be it Windows, Mac or Linux. Just open your browser and go!

First, let's define what doc and pdf are. To correctly write the specified formats, you need to put a dot in front of them - .doc and .pdf. But they often don’t put an end to it - everyone is in a hurry...

The presence of a dot means that after the dot we are dealing with an extension (or otherwise, a file format). For example,

  • “schedule.doc” is the file name,
  • a.doc is a file name extension that tells the operating system which program should open the file.

Doc (from the English document) - this extension means that the document was created by Microsoft Word.

Pdf (from the English Portable Document Format) was developed by Adobe for the US federal authorities to create and store working documents.

Currently used in publishing, fax distribution, tax reporting forms, educational, legal, financial institutions, as well as by ordinary PC users in emails, in messages, etc.

This file is easy to print and share, and difficult to edit. It is generally accepted that if you are sent a document in .pdf format, then you will NOT change or edit the sent document. Likewise, if you send a document in .pdf format, then “ ” assume that your document will not be edited by the recipient (your resume, tax reporting, etc.)

So if you suddenly decide:

  • open “a la hacker” the document sent to you in .pdf format,
  • edit it (make changes),
  • then send it to the person who sent you this document,

then don’t be surprised that the other side won’t want to deal with you anymore. In addition, some materials in .pdf format have copyrights, such as e-books, so any change to such materials automatically constitutes a copyright violation.

After the “lyrical digression” on computer literacy, let’s return to the topic of the article: how to convert doc file in pdf? This can be done different ways. Possible use text editor Word, as well as other utilities or using online services.

Converting doc to pdf may be necessary in various cases. Let's say you need to send a file via e-mail in a well-formatted form, create a resume as a .pdf file or make a simple one e-book. It is possible to use paid and free programs. Programs designed to convert doc to pdf can be of two groups.

The first program is a full-fledged utility for converting DOC to PDF. Programs that are in the second group connect to the system as virtual printer, that is, a real printer is not required. In this case, you need to print the document, but you need to select a virtual rather than a physical printer. The PDF document will be placed in a separate folder.

Not everyone knows that it is possible to convert doc (docx) to pdf using the Word text editor in which the original document was created. This will help you avoid searching, downloading and installing third-party programs.

How to convert DOC to PDF in OpenOffice?

Word is paid program, and not everyone has it, so there is another option with free package OpenOffice:

To download, you need to follow the link above to the official website and then click on the “Download Apache OpenOffice” button.

In this package, OpenOffice Writer is a program similar to the Word text editor. You need to open Writer. At the top there is a toolbar and a “PDF” button.

When the document is loaded into the Writer editor, you need to click on the “PDF” button.

Here you can configure various parameters of the document, for example, put a password on it or configure the parameters of external and internal links.

If the original document contains graphic images, you should pay attention to the “Image” item in the “General” tab. The parameters are set there JPEG compression, as well as image resolution. The higher the parameters, the better the quality of the document will become, but its weight will also increase. Some argue that Writer converts to PDF better than Word: the file is smaller in size and the quality does not suffer.
