What are Word and PDF formats for?
Different types of files, which at first glance perform the same functions, are rarely created out of the blue; more often than not, each of them has unique features and is used to perform its range of tasks. This article is not an educational program on the purpose of doc, docx and pdf files, so I will convey the essence in a short form, and we will move directly to the topic of conversion.
Word with its doc (old versions) and docx (new versions) is intended for creating text documents from scratch, that is, by typing text and inserting the necessary graphic elements into it. Saving to files with standard doc and docx extensions allows you to edit the created document at any time by any user using Microsoft Word.
Word documents are needed to create files from scratch with the ability to edit them later.
PDF format (Portable Document Format) was originally created as an electronic analogue of printed publications (books, magazines). That is, this is a file that can be read and printed, but cannot be changed - a kind of protection against adjustments.
PDF is considered universal, as it is supported by any device, regardless of operating systems and versions, in addition, on every device and in every program its contents look the same.
Of course, there are ways to correct it; using special programs (such as Foxit Phantom, etc.) you can make minor changes to the finished pdf document, but it cannot be seriously changed in structure.
Files in PDF format are the final product, which does not imply changes after their creation (only view and print).
A pdf is not created from scratch, like a doc, but by converting documents created using other editors (text or graphic).
From all this the following follows:
- Word to PDF conversion is easy;
- Converting PDF to Word is significantly more difficult.
Now let's get back to the conversion. Since pdf files are created not by typing text and inserting pictures, but by converting them from other types of documents, the procedure for obtaining them from sources is quite simple and accessible to anyone.
Convert using Microsoft Word
Since 2007 version Word programs can create files in pdf format without outside help. Previously, there was no such feature and we had to resort to other programs or add-ons.
The presence of the pdf saving function has significantly simplified the process of creating e-books and other important documents that require copyright preservation. We simply work with any test document (rtf, doc, docx), write, insert pictures, format as needed and, when the process is completed, save not in a Word file, but in pdf.
You can see that you can choose one of two quality options - better or smaller in size.

Well, for example, I more or less understand only the capabilities of Word, and I’m not ready to master some other specialized editors (for example, for preparing documents in PDF format). However, sometimes there is a need to post documents online or send someone by mail (free manuals, e-books and so on.). Word is great for creating these files, but reading in it is not customary (and not convenient). That's why we have to use converter to more popular readable formats, such as PDF and FB2.
Word to PDF converter - several options
First option to get PDF file and, as I mentioned above, use converter built into Microsoft Office Word the version you are currently using. Those. It installs as a virtual PDF (you can see it when viewing the list of your printers in the panel Windows controls). When installing minimum quality the final document, the file turned out to be twice as light as when using the built-in Microsoft Office Word converter.
If, when installing doPDF, you did not uncheck the box installing add-ons for Word, then on your toolbar this graphic editor will appear new inset(on the right), where there will be tools for saving the document in PDF format and a button with settings. Essentially, all settings remain the same:
Convert DOC to PDF using Apache OpenOffice
If you do not have the Word editor installed (after all, it is paid), and the doPDF utility for some reason was not installed or did not work properly, then there is another option for converting the document Word format to a PDF file. This package can help us with this Open Office(a free alternative to Office from Melkomyagkikh). For example, I have Apache OpenOffice installed, which can be downloaded for free on the official website using the link provided.

Personally, I use the latter all the time to read books on the go. Microsoft Office Word. Are you surprised? Personally, I myself had no idea before that an ordinary text editor, starting with version 2007, has a built-in element for converting a document into a PDF file.
This is done very simply. You create any document in Word, and then you will need to save it in a slightly different way from a regular DOC file.
A window will appear where we make sure that the PDF type is selected. If necessary, change the file name, authorship and keywords.
When the document being saved is too large, try reducing its weight using “Optimization”.
For example, if my Word text file weighs 1.94 MB, then after converting it to PDF, choosing standard optimization, it weighs 2.1 MB.
