We fill the smartphone’s memory with the most suitable travel tools that can “make” any trip!

Irina became depressed at work. I took out my phone. I looked into one application - oh, Beyoncé’s concert in France! I went to another one - hmm, a plane ticket to Nice for 4,000 rubles. I moved to the third - wow, a forgotten bonus of $37 for an apartment. Three clicks and your vacation plan is ready.

And so Irina, in whose head after such fortune the “Who run” stuck the world? (girls apps), the idea arose to write an article about which applications help you travel around the world on a budget and without problems in the spirit - it’s all about France, and you need to find out the bus number to the airport. After all, this is not her first vacation “on her knees” :)

Have you got your megabytes ready?

1. Search for tours online

For what? To fish Spain/Thailand/whatever at the lowest prices

To plan your trips, you don’t have to bother with each segment (tickets, accommodation, transfers). Manipulations can be simplified to one action - purchasing a tour.

Smart search for tours online

Developing the ability to book tours cheaply requires a couple of conditions. First, determine the optimal departure date based on the price calendar. Secondly, check the nearest airports; perhaps it makes sense to fly not from Kazan, but from Samara. Thirdly, read the article about 10 purchasing rules, and only then use the tour app :)

2. Search for hotels

For what? To find accommodation cheaper than on Booking

Yes, yes, there are at least 15 more hotel booking systems, and each with its own discount offers. A polar bear from RoomGuru. The user provides input data, and the search engine itself will figure out what costs and up to what date and display suitable sites in order of increasing price tag.

Travel applications for finding hotels and apartments are not limited to those mentioned above. There are also Hotellook, Hotels.com, Hotel Tonight, CouchSurfing (free accommodation).

3. Search for air tickets

For what? To be the first to buy tickets while others go to the computer

Cheap air tickets, unfortunately, are running out quickly. Especially if they appeared in the mailing list, like, for example, in our telegram channel. Therefore, having a smart aggregator (searching prices for several companies) at hand is a must. Which one of? Choose either one, both are the best applications of their kind:

  • Skyscanner(download: for iPhone; for Android), the advantage is a cool “everywhere” option, showing where it’s cheapest to fly from a certain city/country
  • Aviasales(download: for iPhone, for Android), advantage – calendar and low price map

4. Offline maps

For what? To avoid wasting valuable traffic into the bottomless abyss of roaming

Maps.me is a great app for travelers where you can download maps of any country for free and use them offline. If an enthusiastic “ah!” It hasn’t broken out yet, here’s an explanation: Mapsmi works without the Internet :) Plus, it’s extremely accurate and relevant and with useful comments from users in the “police fines here” category. It also functions as a GPS navigator (tested by the author both on a car and on a bike).

And in Russia and the CIS good alternative– 2Gis.

5. Find a cafe nearby

For what? To avoid getting into a situation like Irina ↓

We love good coffee :)

Others mobile services, focused on food and entertainment - Foursquare and Yelp.

6. Search for free wi-fi

For what? So as not to run from Starbucks to McDuck and back to KFS

And Irina cannot provide a list useful applications without WiFi Map, because she is a real Wi-Fi addict, because she doesn’t want to buy a local SIM card :) The concept is very simple: people share passwords from access points around the world. To avoid getting into the dead zone, where there is a point but no connection, you need to use filters like “most popular” or “recently connected”.

7. Translator

For what? To more or less express myself, when is “speak English?” doesn't say anything

Google Translate– a well-known travel application where English/Russian/Arabic and other 100 languages are woven together, building bridges of communication between peoples. Of course, everyone already knows this, but does everyone know that Google Translate also helps out offline? You just have to download the desired language in advance.

8. Guide

For what? To be your own personal guide

There is a whole set here: Triposo, TripAdvisor, and izi.Travel. But recommendations are subject to Redigo, as convenient, non-lagging and not yet mentioned. There are maps with attractions, background information about countries, various routes, an event feed, and even a phrase book. In short, almost everything is available, except that the audio guide is missing.

Nature on the island of Nusa Penida, Bali

9. Travel app

For what? 1) to avoid sponsoring greedy taxis; 2) save your budget with your travel companions

Regarding the first: Uber- a lifesaver that will always cost less than the local elite with checkers on the roof. Public transport eats up a lot of money, time and personal space, but in some places Uber is surprisingly democratic.

Regarding the second: moving around the country between cities - on. This is a ride sharing app. The driver recruits fellow travelers (the cost is divided accordingly), and everyone rushes together in the car to music, jokes and heart-to-heart conversations (but more often in silence, not everyone speaks English 🙂) Distributed throughout Europe. Here's our review >>

For car rental

10. Communication

For what? Every connection with your mother is necessary, every connection with your mother is important

Otherwise, rest is not rest. Therefore, your best travel apps should include at least two:

  • whatsapp(download: for iPhone; for Android) – I like it because you can insert another SIM card, and the number on WhatsApp will remain the same
  • Skype(download: for iPhone; for Android) – differs in that you can call landline phones

11. Currency

For what? In order not to be stupid in the store over price tags with three zeros after the decimal point

XE Currency combines everything the travel world needs from such an application: it’s free, works with all known currencies, copes with calculations even without an Internet connection.

12. At the airport

Our flight from Rhodes airport

For what? To brighten up Hachiko's regime near the gate, and maybe calm his nerves

In fact, Irina doesn't really like to fly. And he prefers to spend his time waiting in cafes or easy walks through duty-free. And it helps to relieve the nasty chill down your back. FlightRadar24(download: iPhone; Android). As they say, you can forever look at the flames, the water and the number of planes in the sky above the globe.

13. Concerts

Well, and the same travel planning application that started this whole article - Songkick Concerts! You type in your favorite bands/artists, and this cool find notifies you of an upcoming tour in nearby cities.

14. Custom travel apps

  • DreamSim - mobile connection abroad (you order a SIM card online, it is delivered by mail). We always use it for short-term trips of up to 7-10 days. Using the link from us, a bonus of 7 euros to your account.
  • Splitwise- if you are traveling with a group and need to share expenses. There is no constant wasting of time and counting: today a friend buys, tomorrow you buy, at the end of the trip everything is mutually subtracted. Convenient, minimum cash.
  • Getyourguide - great prices on excursions around the world + you can buy tickets to museums, parks, palaces at a good price. For example, the Burj Khalifa.
  • HUJI– an application for shooting in low light.
  • Unfold– templates for Instagram stories.
  • Awardwallet– collects all loyalty programs (miles) in one place. You can also add travel routes. An application for people who really like structure.
  • Spotify– something like iTunes, Yandex and other music applications, but Spotify’s algorithms do something unimaginable and offer really cool tracks!
  • Google Trips– application for building routes. Helps to estimate how many days to spend in a particular city.
  • The Entertainer– a great app if you are traveling with a group. We tested it in Dubai, in short: it allows you to buy 2 dishes or tickets for the price of 1. But it doesn’t work all over the world. We tried it in the UAE, there is also Cyprus, Athens, Bali and several other places. Check on the website. To use, you need to sign up for a paid annual subscription, it pays off after the 1st or 2nd purchase.
  • Flush- an application for finding free toilets nearby :)
  • Yelp– the best analogue of TripAdvisor, search for cafes and restaurants in the USA.
  • Lift is an analogue of Uber, but with working promotional codes, you know what I mean? Here is the promo code – IGOR33222
  • VIA – you can get a “free” ride from New York airport in a Mercedes (click the link for a $20 bonus). So far, it is fully operational only in New York.
  • Hoteltonight– for booking hotels for today or tomorrow (sometimes there are very good offers).

And if you, reader, have other useful travel apps that for some reason are not mentioned here, then welcome in the comments! 🙂

We already have a post on our blog about the best mobile travel apps for Android, but everything is changing very quickly - I decided to update the list and add more useful apps for iPhone.

This article contains the top 30 indispensable travel aids that will help you easily find cheap air tickets, book a hotel or apartment, find a delicious restaurant or cafe, communicate with local residents and much more.

Best travel apps for iphone and android

Purchasing air tickets

✔ Aviasales— a mobile application from the largest Russian meta-search engine for air tickets, there are convenient filters, a price calendar, and you can subscribe to notifications about price reductions. Supports searching for a composite route, for example Moscow-St. Petersburg - Kazan-Moscow.

✔ Skyscanner- a similar application, also allows you to find cheap air tickets, comparing more than 700 airlines and providing information in a convenient form with the ability to sort by filters. Also supports complex search.

In general, these two are more than enough, but if you want, you can also try Momondo, Buruki, Kayak and similar ones.

Hotel reservations and other accommodations

✔Hotellook— a service from the creators of Aviasales, only for hotels. How it works: compares 80 accommodation booking systems and finds the cheapest option. It’s convenient to have everything in one place at once. It is also possible to find a suitable place using a filter, view photos and ratings.

Read also:

✔ Roomguru— an international meta-search engine for hotels from HotelsCombined, with similar functionality. I always look at both; in some cities the options offered differ, both in availability and price.

✔ Airbnb is the world leader in rental housing from owners. Renting an apartment, house or villa is often more convenient than a hotel room, especially if you are traveling with a large family, a group of friends and want to feel almost at home even at the end of the world.

Read also:

✔Couchsurfing— an application from the famous hospitality website of the same name. Find friends and people who are ready to host you among 12 million residents of 230 thousand cities around the world.

Best Travel Apps - Accommodation

Transport

✔ Russian Railways- official mobile application from Russian railways. Buying train tickets in Russia. Unfortunately, it doesn't work very stable.

MailRu Group recently released a similar application: BeepCar.

✔Uber- an application for ordering a taxi in more than 500 cities around the world.

Recently, YandexTaxi and Uber merged in Russia, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Belarus. Applications will also be combined into one.

There are many more analogues: Gett Taxi, Grab and many others. In some countries, Uber is a motorcycle taxi, which can also be called using the app (in Bali, the local taxi mafia is fighting with them). And in Tehran, for example, there is its own application for calling a taxi - Snapp.

✔ Flihgtradar24— No. 1 in the “Travel” section in more than 100 countries. This useful app allows you to track thousands of aircraft around the world in real time. And besides this, find out the flight status, speed, altitude, weather conditions, flight history for the last month. There is free and paid versions with extended functionality.

✔ Seat Guru- database of many airlines with detailed plans specific aircraft from one company or another. So you can choose the most comfortable spot- even a long flight will be easy. Now there are more than 130 carriers in the service, but many Russian ones are still missing.

✔ Yandex.Metro— allows you to easily plot routes and navigate the metro of Moscow, St. Petersburg, Minsk, Kyiv, Kharkov, Istanbul.

What other travel apps do I recommend?

Planners and organizers

✔ Evernote— organizer application, electronic notepad. Syncs across all devices and allows you to record thoughts and notes anywhere, they will all be stored inside the application. You can also add general access, make lists, save web pages, PDFs and more.

✔TripIt— collects all your travel plans in one place. The application can itself collect data from mail, creating a trip plan and synchronizing it with the calendar.

Attractions

✔TripAdvisor— the largest service for travelers. Easily find the best hotels, restaurants, entertainment, read reviews, find nearby interesting places, download city maps.

✔ Redigo— travel guides and guides to various countries of the world, now more than 800 cities and regions. All guides and city maps can be downloaded and used offline.

✔ Afisha-Mir— a similar guide to countries, you can also add notes, tips, and see recommendations from friends and other users.

✔ Triposo— also works offline, you can book hotels, excursions directly from the application, there is a built-in currency converter.

Cards

Google Maps - a must have for a traveler. Wherever you go, have maps handy. After all, you can buy a local SIM card with an Internet package and easily navigate the area. Now Google Maps has the opportunity to download a site in advance and use it offline - I've been waiting for a long time!

Maybe you prefer Yandex maps, you can take them, but Google is somehow more familiar to me.

✔ Maps.Me is the second travel map app that I recommend downloading to your smartphone. It works offline and via GPS, no internet or connection is needed, you won’t even get lost in the forest. There are most countries in the world, you download the package in advance for a specific area (now you can even not the whole country, but by regions or provinces) and use it offline. Now you can book a hotel or call YandexTaxi from the application.

✔2Gis— convenient when traveling around Russia. There is not only a map, but also a list of organizations in the building, driving directions and even a small historical note.

Languages

✔ Google Translateuniversal translator from 103 languages (online) and 52 (offline), and this list is constantly growing. The ability to receive translations from photos (for 30 languages) is very useful when traveling. Plus speech translation (from 32 languages). In China, I had a good time communicating with people who don't speak English at all on many topics - a very useful app for traveling.

There is also a similar translator from Yandex, you can use it as you prefer.

Connection

✔ WhatsApp- allows you to send messages or use it simply for a telephone conversation. Requires much less traffic than Skype and works stably - in Iran I could easily communicate with home thanks to the local 3G Internet and this application.

✔Viber- free video calls, telephone conversations And text messages. You can create group chats, which can be convenient at work.

✔ Skype is another useful travel app that allows you to make free video calls to any part of the world via the Internet.

Not all VPNs will work equally well in a given country. For example, in Iran I used Psiphone - it worked great.

Expense planning

✔ XE Currency— online currency converter. Before your trip, you update the database by downloading all the latest courses and then use it offline. As soon as there is internet, the courses will be updated again. It’s convenient when you just arrive in a new country and cannot immediately convert these dongs, rupees and others into rubles.

✔ Monefy— an application for recording expenses and income, allows you to keep records in a visual form. It features a clear interface, ease of recording expenses, and the ability to change currency. I use it not only on trains, but also at home in Russia.

Search for restaurants and cafes

✔ Foursquare- one of best apps to find food, entertainment and interesting places. Convenient filter by preferences, map with reviews from other people.

Search tours

Often, tours to popular tourist destinations turn out to be more profitable than planning the trip yourself. For a week to Bulgaria for 8,000 rubles with flights, accommodation and breakfast, or for ten days in Thailand for the price of a flight for 25,000 rubles?

✔ Travelata.ru— convenient search best prices for tours among 120 tour operators from many cities in Russia. Search by specified criteria, dates, price, detailed descriptions hotels. Payment online by bank card.

There are many more useful travel apps, but these are the ones installed on my smartphone and often help out on the road.

If you are an ordinary pedestrian or hitchhiker, have a navigator on your Android smartphone with useful features never hurts. Find the path to a specific object on the map, show a place for a possible overnight stay or snack, provide information about public transport in an unknown city. Some applications can give you all this, you just need to select and install them on your device. Let's look at several navigators on Android that can help a pedestrian navigate unknown terrain.

Maps with GPS navigation from the developers of the giant Google. The most common navigation application that is present out of the box on most Android smartphones. If you are a walker and need a guide, then Google Maps can easily help you with this.

The navigator will lay out a route in several options and show photographs of the area currently around you. He will tell you about public transport that can take you to the desired location. He will not miss useful places in the form of shops, pharmacies, ATMs and other organizations. You can also use maps offline by first downloading them to your device.

Yandex.Navigator

Another application from a well-known brand that offers users many useful and high-quality services. The Yandex navigator performs its functions perfectly. It has a simple interface and quickly creates several route variations. If on the way to the desired place you see something interesting or some incident happens that may interfere with movement, then you can put a comment about the event on the map.

Once it is published, other users will immediately see it on their Android devices. Some nice additions include changing the simple green triangle cursor used in each navigator to some others in the form of a car from the Transformers movie, a jeep and several more. The voice-over of the announcer was not left aside; in addition to the standard female and male voices, the application also contains the voices of some Russian actors and characters from films. Within the framework of this topic, the application still has one drawback - it is focused only on drivers, which it copes with at the highest level.

HERE WeGo

A small application also aimed at pedestrians. HERE WeGo offline maps, compared to previous applications, have a small set of functions. But if you travel on your own two feet, the navigator will help you with the fastest route planning or provide information about passing public transport.

When traveling to other cities and countries, he will indicate where you can eat, shop and find other useful places. Work offline when pre-loading maps of the desired area is not ignored. And here the disadvantage of the navigator is files with a large amount of memory, since there is no breakdown by city (to get your city you need to download a file weighing about 500 MB).

MAPS.ME

A navigator that is fast in its work and offers no less interesting features than the previous ones. Mapsmi has in its arsenal the same navigation capabilities as the applications discussed above. There is an offline mode with downloading maps, and useful places in the form of catering outlets, shops and other things.

The presence of a pedestrian mode and setting various markers or adding missing places on the map does not make MAPS.ME less attractive compared to its competitors. Recently, with the development of online taxis, the integration of the well-known Uber taxi has been conveniently implemented here, which can be called without resorting to the official application.

MapFactor GPS Navigation Maps

The last navigator in the collection, working with maps from two sources (OpenStreetMap and TomTom). When you log into the application, you will need to choose which ones you will use. A little complex, but at the same time having a full range of functions for high-quality work with route planning. In addition to constructing the movement by the application itself, this can also be done manually, specifying certain points in advance.

When managing maps, you can set prohibited areas so that the navigator does not take this area into account when building a route. A fairly important tool is the function "Simulate route", which will help you look ahead to places to eat, spend the night and other important details of your upcoming trip. The disadvantage of the program: it is impossible to use it without first downloading certain maps, which is what you are asked to do the first time you start it.

It would take a very long time to list the navigators that are freely available, and they will all work at approximately the same level. But the applications listed above include all the functions you can imagine. What to use is up to the user.

Traveling by car is one of the most popular types of summer holidays - they give complete freedom of movement and route planning. In order not to get lost in Paris or not to be left without a cup of good coffee in Istanbul, many tools have been invented. Applications for tourists take care of most of the worries about organizing a future trip, and are also an important help on the road.

Preparing and organizing a road trip differs from planning and preparing other types of trips. Anything can happen on the road - the car will break down, or bad weather will prevent you from reaching your destination on time. The possibility of changing the route for one reason or another cannot be ruled out. It is also necessary to provide in advance places for “halts”, during which you can not only replenish fuel reserves, but eat and rest. Although it is not always possible to strictly adhere to the plan, and it is not always advisable. The main thing is not to end up on a deserted road in the middle of the prairie without gasoline, communications and food.

The mobile apps presented below are listed in alphabetical order. With their help, you can plan your trip in advance and prepare yourself for all sorts of twists of fate during the trip. They will help you plan a route, choose a direction, book a hotel room or make changes to already placed orders, find interesting places along the way and not be afraid of starving to death on the road. The main thing is that these programs will not increase your vacation budget at all, since they are all completely free.

Field Trip (by Google)

Google's The Field Trip app uses information about places that are of interest to you and selects the most useful information based on your location. In order not to distract the driver from the road, you can connect an audio device via Bluetooth that will read this information out loud. Field Trip uses sites like Thrillist, Zagat and Sunset to generate recommendations, as well as Songkick and Flavorpill to find local music. The application is available in various languages, including Russian, and provides information worldwide.

The application is available on Android and iOS.

GasBuddy

GasBuddy will be useful when it comes time to refuel your car. This app and website will help you find the nearest gas stations and find the best price offer. GasBuddy will tell you if you can fill up cheaper by driving a few extra kilometers ahead. While most of the travel apps listed in this collection are available on iOS and Android, only GasBuddy has a version for BlackBerry and Windows Phone. The application contains information about gas stations on the roads of the USA and Canada and is available only in the version on English language.

The application is available on Android, iOS, BlackBerry, Web, Windows Phone.

Gogobot

Gogobot is a social travel app that helps you find places to stay, eat and relax. Members of the Gogobot community upload photos, information and ratings of places into categories based on their interests - family, foodie, outdoor, economy and adventure. Before the trip, you can study the area along the route based on reviews and photographs of community members, and select places that are worth visiting. The interface language of the application and the web version of the service is English.

Google Maps

It's hard to imagine anyone who hasn't used Google Maps. The route planning function allows you to get acquainted with the upcoming path. In addition, Google Maps can save travelers time by warning them in advance about accidents or repairs along the route, automatically suggesting an alternative route. This is an excellent navigation system if you have GPS in your smartphone.

The application is available on Android, iOS, Web.

iExit

The iExit app will show you what you can find if you take the nearest highway exit. Using the user's location, iExit identifies nearby highway exit locations and provides a list of restaurants, hotels, gas stations, campgrounds and more. If you prefer to eat at specific network restaurants or refuel at gas stations of one company, just indicate this in the preferences section, and iExit will show you where to turn to get to the nearest favorite point. Thanks to the application, you will never miss the right exit. This English-language application will be useful when traveling on US highways.

Maps.Me

The Maps.Me mobile app allows you to view maps around the world, zoom to a region or city, and download a detailed map of a specific area for offline use. When you first use the application, it will offer you the option to download only a map or a map with a route-building function, which allows you to plot your way from point A to point B without an Internet connection. What makes Maps.Me different is high level details on maps even for very remote places. The Russian-language interface and a wide selection of maps make this application a universal navigation tool in the absence of the Internet.

The application is available on Android, Amazon Fire, BlackBerry, iOS.

Roadtrippers

Tell Roadtrippers your location and destination, travel dates and what interests you about this trip, and the app will build a route for you. Roadtrippers will help you find unusual attractions, restaurants, museums, amusement parks, tourist centers and much more. Roadtrippers also takes into account the user's wishes, if he has indicated exactly where he would like to go. The application is presented in English only.

The application is available on Android, iOS, Web.

Roomer

Booking hotels early can significantly help reduce your travel budget. The problem with traveling by car is that we are not always able to reach our destination by the time specified in the booking. And if the hotel is paid for, then these are double expenses. However, if you use the Roomer app, things are different. This app and website (roomertravel.com) helps travelers sell their prepaid bookings to others and thus save themselves from unnecessary expenses. Also, using the application, you can find a free room that, for some reason, was not in demand by other Roomer users. The application is available in English. To pay for your room, you can choose different currencies, including the Russian ruble.

The application is available on Android, iOS, Web.

Triposo

When heading to the desert or mountains, you cannot be sure that you will have Internet access along the entire route. Triposo installs offline maps and guides directly on mobile device, and they can be used without an Internet connection. Once you arrive at your destination, Triposo will offer sightseeing tours, weather forecasts, and other opportunities to explore your new area. The English-language application contains maps and guides to the main tourist routes.

The application is available on Android, iOS.

Waze

Waze is an app that allows users to share traffic and traffic data, as well as other road information, including police hotspots, potholes, accidents and road repairs.

While Google Maps will provide general information about the situation ahead along the route, Waze will add to it the smallest details from eyewitnesses. You can even find out how fast cars are moving in traffic jams. In urban environments, this application is useful for taxi drivers and delivery services, but it will also come in handy on the highway. Please note that in order for Waze information to be displayed correctly, vehicle location data is required, even in background, which can lead to the gadget’s battery draining. The application is adapted for Russian-speaking users.

The application is available on Android, iOS, Windows Phone.

Yelp

The advantage of Yelp over others recommendation services is its high popularity, hence the greater number of different reviews. If you're entering a destination and want to find the nearest coffee shop to serve you a cup of real coffee, Yelp's recommendation is worth heeding. While other travel apps feature recommendations from other tourists, Yelp mostly relies on reviews from locals. This is especially good for restaurants, but Yelp can also help you find auto repair shops, stores, clinics, and other places you might need along the way.

The application is available on Android, iOS, Windows Phone, BlackBerry.
