Remember these basic keyboard shortcuts and you'll be able to get your work done faster.

Windows has several shutdown modes. In addition to the usual shutdown, through which we completely turn off the computer, there is also sleep mode and hibernation.

It makes sense to use them if you plan to interrupt work for some time - from several minutes to several hours. In this case, “putting to sleep” is much better than regular shutdown. But first things first.

Sleep mode is a feature that stops the computer from running, but does not turn it off. All open source software, files and folders will still be open.

When you turn on this mode, the computer does not turn off, but seems to fall asleep. When you exit it, everything that worked before you were put to sleep will be revealed.

It is very comfortable! For example, I decided to take a break from work and drink some tea. But on my computer there are documents, website pages on the Internet, and various other files open. So that after a break I don’t have to open it all again, I can put the computer to sleep.

In fact, it will turn off. The screen will go dark, the fans will most likely stop (that is, the computer will stop making noise), and virtually no energy will be consumed. But still, the computer will work and “remember” everything that I did with it.

When I wake him up, he is immediately ready to go. That is, there is no need to wait for loading - the whole process takes a few seconds. And the computer will be in the same state (with all open files, folders, Internet pages) in which I left it.

How to put your computer to sleep

The developers assure that if the computer suddenly turns off in sleep mode (for example, the battery on a laptop runs out), the system will automatically save everything open files. But there is always a risk of losing information, because something can go wrong.

Therefore, the first thing you need to do before euthanizing is to save your job. After this, you can turn on sleep mode. This is done in almost the same way as turning off the computer normally.

Windows 7 and Vista: click on the “Start” button, click on the small button with an arrow next to “Shut down”, select “Sleep” from the list.

Windows XP: “Start” - Shutdown (Turn off the computer) - Standby mode.

Windows 8: Power button () - Sleep mode. Or click on “Start”, click on the small arrow button next to “Shut down”, and select “Sleep” from the list.

You can also put the computer to sleep this way: move the cursor to the lower right corner of the screen, click on the button with the image of a gear, click on the “Shutdown” item and select “Sleep mode”.

If you don't have Personal Computer, and a laptop or netbook, you can often “put it to sleep” simply by lowering the lid.

By the way, often in the settings Windows systems 7 and Windows 8 are prescribed so that the computer spontaneously falls asleep after certain time inaction. That is, he will fall asleep on his own without your help if you don’t touch him for a while.

How to “wake up” your computer

There are several ways to wake up from sleep mode. All of them are simple, but not all of them will work - it depends on the computer itself, how exactly it “wakes up” for you.

In any case, one of the options will work:

  • Move your mouse
  • Left click
  • Press any keyboard key
  • Press the computer's power button
  • If you were put to sleep by lowering the lid of your laptop/netbook, just lift it

Hibernation Mode

This is a special mode designed for laptops. It is even more economical than a sleeper. We can say that when you select it, the computer goes into deep sleep and consumes very little electricity.

Among the disadvantages, it should be noted that the computer takes much longer to “fall asleep” and “wake up”. Otherwise, you won’t feel much difference between sleep mode and hibernation.

How to turn it on . Windows XP: no way - there is no such mode in this system.

Windows 7: “Start” - click on the small arrow button next to “Shut down” - select “Hibernation”.

Windows 8: “Power” (Shutdown) - Hibernation.

If there is no such item, then you need to configure something in the system. First, open Start and select Control Panel. Then find and open “System and Security”, and then open “Power Options”. In the column on the left side, click on “Power Button Actions”, then on “Change Unavailable in this moment settings". After that, check the box next to the “Hibernation Mode” item.

What's better: turn it off or put it to sleep?

It would seem that the answer is obvious - of course, turn it off. After all, what could be simpler and more effective?!

But not everything is so simple. Knowledgeable people say that the less often you turn on/off equipment, the longer it will last. That is, in their opinion, it is better for the computer to work without stopping at all.

The explanation for this is as follows: when the computer is turned on, some of its internal parts heat up and because of this expand, and when turned off they cool down and contract. If you do this often, the parts will wear out faster. Yes, and the computer can simply fail due to surges electric current.

So what happens, it’s better not to turn it off at all?! Also debatable. As you know, electrical current surges are not good for any technology. And if there are power outages, then it is better to completely disconnect the computer (including from the network) when it is inactive for a long time.

But if everything is in order with the electrical network, or even better, there is a special device (UPS, voltage stabilizer), then you don’t have to turn off the computer at all. Just put it into sleep mode at night or during downtime.

But somehow this is unusual and seems wrong. Although the refrigerator, for example, works without interruption - and nothing. Yes and Cell phones Same.

As for savings, compared to a refrigerator, a computer in sleep mode “eats” much less. And in hibernation mode it practically does not consume it at all. But despite this, many users do not risk leaving the computer turned on for a long time, even in sleep mode.

Therefore, here everyone decides for himself. Personally, I almost never turn off my computer during the working day. If I need to go somewhere, I put it into sleep mode. Although I turn it off at night and during long trips (a matter of habit).

Why do you need sleep mode anyway? I will give only one, but valuable option! Perhaps you are faced with a lack of time, perhaps your boss or friend urgently calls you somewhere, and you are working with a program where you cannot just pick up and leave everything. What happens? You won’t be able to save the data, and if you don’t save it, then start all over again?

The same fate can await you during a power outage if the source uninterruptible power supply yours is not new. You won't even have time to turn off your computer. But put the car into sleep mode for 10 seconds.

Yes, exactly 10 seconds (depending on the power of the computer). You are working with a program and you urgently need to leave for an unknown amount of time. You press one button on the keyboard and after 10 seconds the machine sleeps. In this case, you can safely turn off the power supply.

After turning on the computer, the program will continue to work from the place where you put it to sleep, without losing data. I think you will appreciate the usefulness of this function.

Now I answer the question How to enable sleep mode.

I think you already know how to call screen properties: right click on a blank screen Properties. Go to the tab Screensaver, click the button below Nutrition.

In the power properties, select sleep mode and check the box next to it Allow use of sleep mode. But that is not all. To enable sleep mode, the disk must have 10% free space.

Now here we go to the tab Additionally. Below in the window When you press the sleep button- choose Entering sleep mode. Well, at the same time, in the window above we select Shutdown. I’ll explain why in the next article.

After each action, press the button Apply.

I personally prefer this type of keyboard, inexpensive (because I love coffee :)) and with Power, Sleep, Wake buttons. When you press the Sleep button, the computer will go into sleep mode.

Your keyboard may also have such a button, but if not, don’t worry. Another quick way. Press the start button, hover the cursor over the standby button, press Shift and this button.

That's it - the cop went to bed. Turn on in the usual way or the Power button after some manipulations described in the following instructions.

Perhaps you are faced with a lack of time, perhaps your boss or friend urgently calls you somewhere, and you are working with a program where you cannot just pick up and leave everything. What happens? You won't be able to save the data, and if not...

Of course, there are some peculiarities in using the sleep mode, which we will now consider, for example, why there is sometimes no “hibernation” command in the shutdown menu or how to wake up the computer from sleep by simply touching any key on the keyboard.

Hibernate Windows 7

A lot of letters come with requests to show and tell how to configure it correctly joint ventureoperating mode on laptop and a simple computer with installed Windows 7. So let's get started: Start->Control Panel->System and Security->Power Options.

In this dialog box you must have selected Power plan, for example, I have selected Balanced, press Setting up a power plan

Here we can choose:

Turn off display: you need to set the time when the computer turns off the display when completely idle, for example 15 minutes.
Put the computer to sleep current mode: you can choose any time, for example, you set it to 30 minutes, this means that you were working on the computer, urgently left for other matters, and it was left on, after 30 minutes your computer or laptop will understand that the owner is not there and will go to sleep mode.

When you arrive, you just need to swipe your hand across the keyboard or press the Power button (depending on how you configure it, read on) and your laptop will immediately wake up and you can resume work from the place where you had to leave . For example, I can wake up my laptop from sleep mode by pressing any key on the keyboard and Windows 7 immediately restores operation, but on a desktop computer it’s easier to press the system unit’s power button.
When using a laptop, you and I will still have access to the function Action when closing digging the lid

If you select Sleep in this parameter, then when you close the lid of your laptop, it will go into sleep mode, and when you open the lid and press any key on the keyboard, it will instantly start.

In the Power window, the Request password on wakeup function is available; it is needed so that no one can use your computer without you; when someone tries to wake up your laptop from sleep mode, he will naturally have to enter a password.

Also in the Power Options tab, you and I can configure the parameter Action of the pi buttoncomputer tanning, so that when you press it, the computer goes into sleep mode or hibernation, and also completed his work. Select an option Nothing to do and when you press the power button from Windows 7, no action will occur.

By default, the computer wakes up from sleep mode when you turn on the power button, if you want, you can configure it to wake up when you press any key on the keyboard or touch the mouse. To exit from hibernation Wind ows 7 using a keyboard or mouse, you need to go to the device manager and double-right-click on the desired device and go to the properties tab Power management and check the box Allow this device to wake the computer from standby mode.

If this number it won't work for you, it means yours peripherals don't support this function, but you can find out exactly by typing in command line powercfg -devicequery wake_from_any and all devices that can be used to wake the computer from sleep mode will be displayed.

What is the difference between sleep mode in Windows 7 and hibernation and what is hybrid sleep mode?

  • Sleep mode: The computer saves information about your open applications in RAM and enters a low power consumption mode, doing this quite quickly, but if your laptop’s battery is completely drained, the computer will simply turn off and your open applications will simply close without saving the work.
  • Hibernation: The computer saves all information about your open applications on the hard drive in a file called hiberfil.sys and shuts down completely. The only difference is that during hibernation the computer does not consume any electricity at all, whereas during sleep mode energy is still consumed. But to enter and exit hibernation mode, the computer needs much more time than when using sleep mode.
  • Hybrid sleep mode: combines sleep mode and hibernation, the results of your work in open applications are stored in RAM, but also on the hard drive and the computer goes into low power consumption mode, so that when the battery is completely discharged, the results of your work will not be lost.

The simple answer is this: The computer enters sleep mode faster than hibernation, and it also exits sleep mode faster than hibernation.

You really need to be careful when using sleep mode with some programs, for example, if you process or encode video files for several hours and at this time the computer goes into sleep mode, the process will naturally be interrupted by an error. And when the computer wakes up from sleep mode, you will have to start encoding again, in such cases you need to turn off sleep mode completely while such a program is running.

  • Conclusion: It is preferable to use hibernation mode if you have enough for a long time walk away from the computer. If, when using the hibernation mode, you completely de-energize the computer, for example, remove the battery, then there is no risk of losing open and unsaved data, since the computer is completely turned off. Sleep mode does not provide such a guarantee.

In the shutdown menu, sometimes there is no "hibernate?" command.
Hibernation may not appear in this menu if Hybrid Sleep is enabled in Power Options. Power->Setting the power plan->Change additional power settings, in these settings, we can prohibit the use of hybrid sleep mode, remove the password for waking the computer from sleep, and more.

To find out what modes your computer supports, type powercfg /a at the command line
Hibernation and sleep mode can doesn't work in Windows 7, if they are disabled in your BIOS, read our articles How to get into the BIOS. They may also not work due to outdated drivers for the video card.

Sleep mode– the optimal way to turn off your computer due to temporary use and after a while instantly restore your work session. In this state, the device switches to minimal energy consumption: only the RAM and the processor function responsible for its operation. Which, in fact, makes it possible to save and restore a work session.

To put the computer to sleep in the menu "Start" Windows has a corresponding option. And on laptops, this mode is also turned on by default when the lid is closed. How to “put to sleep” a computer using hot keys? So that this process can be quickly carried out every time you need to be distracted for a while. And do not pull the lid of the laptop every time if you are working with one.

1. Keyboard hardware capabilities

It is not recommended to close or open the laptop lid unnecessarily. This will accelerate the wear of the device matrix cable and screen mounting hinges. Therefore, many manufacturers provide a combination with an auxiliary key to put you to sleep Fn. This is usually Fn + F1 or Fn + F7. In fact, these hotkeys are preferable to use on laptops. If combinations with Fn, you need to install native drivers - with DVD-disk from the delivery kit or from the manufacturer’s official web resource.

For assembly PC You can purchase a keyboard with additional function keys, including a sleep key.

2. Setting the “Power” button to sleep

If purchasing for PC a new keyboard is not being considered in the near future, sleep mode can be configured for the hardware power button "Power" system unit. On laptops, the power button is usually set to sleep mode by default. If this is not the case and the device is pressed "Power" turns off, goes into hibernation or simply turns off the display, in Windows environment all this can be reconfigured.

Let's go to control Panel.

Here we need a section.

And, in fact, we select what we want to happen when pressed "Power". Save the changes.

3. Sleep hotkeys

Windows does not natively provide hotkeys for sleep mode. But they can be implemented by setting up quick access to program shortcuts. To do this, you need to create a shortcut accordingly system function falling asleep.

On the desktop we create new shortcut.

We specify as an object:

C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe PowrProf.dll,SetSuspendState

We give it a name, it can be arbitrary. Click "Ready".

Appeared at work new object, go to its properties. Go to the tab "Label". By the way, those who find it convenient to use the sleep button on their desktop can customize an icon for it.
