A virtual reality(eng. virtual reality, VR) - created technical means the world transmitted to a person through his senses: vision, hearing, smell, touch and others. Virtual reality simulates both exposure and reactions to exposure. To create a convincing complex of sensations of reality, computer synthesis of properties and reactions virtual reality produced in real time.

Back in 2010, the ultimate dream of ours was a 3D TV or a Nintendo Wii game console. Now, virtual reality glasses have become a massive trend in the world of digital entertainment, giants such as Valve, Sony, Microsoft and even Facebook (owners of the Oculus subsidiary) are striving to grab their titbit of the market in the race for the most “true” virtual reality. However, even in the age of technology, when everything is at hand to create your own virtual reality helmet, the above companies have already faced significant problems in terms of sales of these VR helmets.

Firstly, the price of glasses from Sony, Oculus and other companies will, at best, be around $300, although in practice they are all in the $500 price range. This, you see, is quite serious money for a still experimental technology, in which the market may still lose interest before best years, this leads us to the second point.

Secondly, video game content for these glasses is very scarce, the vast majority of games are so-called “time killers” from independent indie developers, interest in which is lost after just a couple of gaming sessions. In other words, large manufacturers like Rockstar, Activision or EA are still looking at the platform, but have not yet hatched any major plans for doing business on them. It is quite possible that the market is not yet ready for this technology and what we have in this moment, will only serve as the basis for full-fledged virtual reality in the future.

To help users who cannot, or simply do not want to spend big money for glasses from major manufacturers, but definitely want to try the technology without losing the unique experience, I'm reviewing a budget version of VR glasses called , which cost only $13-$15.

Why such a difference in price?

VR Box 2.0 is the creation of Chinese engineers and designers, the prefix “2.0” speaks for itself - this is the second revision of the budget virtual headset, the first version has firmly established itself in the market for affordable VR devices and has also gained an extensive user base. This begs the question, why are these devices so much more expensive than the older line of devices? Are manufacturers skimping on quality? In fact, everything is extremely simple, the VR glasses of business sharks are stuffed with their own hardware - processors, video cards, speakers, expensive lenses and display high resolution, and devices such as HTC Vive even come complete with their own sensors for the living room and 2 remote controllers. The design of Chinese VR helmets is much more ascetic in this regard, the most expensive element of their glasses is high-quality lenses, and there are no electronics inside at all.

VR BOX 2 design

The fact is that the potential functionality of VR glasses can be revealed at lower costs; VR Box 2.0 does not have a display; its function is performed by the screen of your mobile phone, however, first things first.

Design of the box in which the new one is packaged VR Box 2 Compared to the first version, it went into pronounced minimalism - the previous version was delivered in a modest light brown box, while the second one was completely in a white box, in the style of Apple, with the proud inscription “VR Box 2.0” on the lid.

The first thing that catches your eye is that the design of the front panel of the glasses has slightly changed; unlike the first version, it does not have sharp corners, but has acquired neat rounded corners. Also, a small but pleasant addition in the form of a sliding lid that opens the camera of your phone; this feature is needed for playing games on a smartphone with augmented reality technology, in previous version helmet, this cover had to be picked with a finger to disconnect it from the body, but now everything is done in a matter of seconds with a slight movement of the hand.

The inner lining is made of foam rubber, since the touch of foam rubber is unpleasant for the skin of the face; it is covered with a mesh, which negates all the discomfort from using the device. Foam is also quite convenient if you plan to use the glasses long term, that is, if you plan to watch movies or play games, and not play 5 minutes of demo 360-degree games (however, it will also work for the latter, of course) .

The design of the glasses itself, with the exception of the front panel, has not changed, except that the straps are now not with special fasteners, but with Velcro, this is a weightless but still pleasant addition; adjusting the straps will now take much less time. However, if the whole family uses the helmet, this change will be much more significant.

Aspherical lenses and their adjustment

And here we move on to the most important thing - the lenses. Let me make a reservation right away that people with absolutely any vision can look through lenses; you can even wear a helmet while wearing glasses, but they should not be healthy and cover the entire face. The design contains two sliders, one allows you to adjust the distance of the lenses, and the second the interlens distance. This way you will not experience discomfort.

In addition, the new model virtual glasses Aspherical lenses are used, which eliminate image distortion.

Behind the lenses there is a special holder where your phone is attached, I immediately warn you that the screen size should be from 3.5 to 6 inches. Or up to 83mm wide and up to 163mm long, and features a gyroscope so the games you play can respond to your head movements.

Virtual reality games

To play games on your PC, you need special program– installed on your phone and your PC, this program broadcasts the image from the PC to your phone, which is currently inserted into the glasses.

How is the 3D effect achieved? This is very easy - when using VR mode, the phone screen is divided into two duplicate images, therefore, the left image falls into the left lens, and the right image into the right one. But the human brain sees 1 picture, thanks to a slight shift, a 3D illusion is created. Expensive virtual reality glasses work on the same principle, only they have electronics and, instead of a phone screen, they have their own display.

Please note that you can only play those games on a PC that support gyroscope technology, that is, the orientation of the device in space, but you don’t have to worry about this, almost every second of the newly released games supports this technology.

conclusions

I think we can sum it up, the only downside of these glasses I can name is the lack of their own speakers, which, in principle, can be easily solved with your own headphones; otherwise, the design of the helmet is as convenient as possible to use. Of course, before the first launch of the games you will have to do a little shamanism, but, in the end, similar more expensive devices also work not without shamanism, but this particular option is, without exaggeration, tens of times cheaper. Perhaps you only want to watch movies in 3D, in which case there is no better option (unless you go to IMAX, although I would say that the effect is almost the same). In any case, VR Box 2 is great for both watching movies and digital entertainment.

Over the past two years, the field of VR (virtual reality) has stepped far forward: a number of famous companies have already announced helmets or glasses of their own making, others promise support for these devices in their services, and the scope of application of this technology is expanding by leaps and bounds. What unknown horizons does VR open to us, and what can we expect from the industry in the coming years?

Oculus Rift

In 2012, a previously unknown American company Oculus VR, engaged in scientific research in the field of virtual technologies, announced the start of fundraising on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter, so that those that have almost completed development and reached the debugging phase 3D virtual reality glasses called Oculus Rift was released. As the engineers themselves stated, main feature The device was to create a wider field of view in comparison with the earlier developments of designers. In total, funding for the project cost $91 million (and only 2.5 million of them were raised on Kickstarter). Over the three years that have passed since then, the authors have presented three development kits, with each subsequent dev-kit being ahead of the previous one in terms of convenience and functionality. The release of the first consumer version is planned for Q1 2016. Now the prototype of this device can be found in large entertainment centers and shopping malls. The gadget also regularly appears at gaming exhibitions.

PC support announced Linux based or , as well as Mac. The publishers of such popular hits as Minecraft, Mirror’s Edge, Team Fortress 2, Half-Life 2, Euro Truck Simulator 2, etc. showed great interest in the device. Oculus Rift support in all the described games was also promised by the developers.

Speaking about the prospect and future development of the technology, the integration of 3D virtual reality glasses with many software platforms(in particular, with Source, Unity, Unreal Engine, CryEngine and a number of others). The plans include connecting the device to Android-based mobile gadgets.

What can you say about your impressions of using the glasses? When playing a simulation, 3D action or horror game, realism increases significantly. When you see a moving object in front of you, you get the feeling that you can literally touch it with your hands. When driving a car, motorcycle or bicycle, the gameplay turns almost like driving live: you can change the viewing angle; notice objects located on the sides and fully control the process of movement itself (though still without taking your hands off the keyboard and mouse).

Testing of a pre-production version of Oculus Rift by a major gaming publication.

VR demo of one of the announced games Back to Dinosaur Island based on the Crytek engine. Now it is available on Steam, and absolutely free.

Oculus Rift glasses were just the “first sign” in the unexplored field of virtual reality technologies. Shortly after the release of the glasses, several other leading companies in the gaming and mobile industry announced the release of alternative gadgets of their own production (namely, Sony and Samsung, respectively).

PlayStation VR – 3D virtual reality glasses from Sony

Sony has been talking about the start of work on its own VR helmet on the sidelines for a long time. Considering the Japanese promotion of the incredibly successful latest generation console PlayStation 4 on the market, it was not difficult to guess that 3D virtual reality glasses would be released just for it (most likely as an exclusive). The first presentation took place in March 2014; quite a lot of time was spent on concluding patents for the technological innovations used in the helmet. First called Project Morpheus VR, the project was renamed PlayStation VR in September 2015.

What can we say about technical parameters helmet? At the moment, it is known that the device functions in conjunction with DualShock 4, PS Move and PlayStation Camera. Support for Full HD 1080p is declared. The viewing angle is more than 90°. Simulation of up to 60 sound sources is possible. Both wireless and wireless connections are available. wired headphones or a headset.

A full review of the latest working version not yet, so we have prepared an official trailer for you.

Most recently, you could try the helmet in action and play some demos at the Igromir exhibition, held in October in Moscow. The next opportunity will likely come in Q1 2016, when Sony promises to bring the finished version of PlayStation VR to consumers.

Samsung Gear VR

Another interesting development is being prepared in the depths of the South Korean giant Samsung - a head-mounted VR display Samsung Gear VR It’s worth saying right away that the manufacturing company is creating this device in collaboration with Oculus VR, already mentioned in this review, which undoubtedly should have a very positive impact on the quality of the product.

If the previously mentioned devices are intended for PCs and game consoles, then Samsung classifies its creation as an expensive accessory for mobile phones. So, the display will connect to all the latest flagship smartphones manufacturer - Galaxy Note 4, Note 5, S6 Edge,+, S6 Edge, Galaxy S6.

The first announcement of the gadget took place in September 2014. At the same time, the technical capabilities were announced.

If we compare Gear VR with Oculus Rift glasses, the virtual display from the “Asian Tiger” works entirely offline, without requiring a connection to a computer. The helmet is not equipped with its own display, and functions in conjunction with a smartphone.

What is the device itself? Essentially, this is a special device that allows you to mount your smartphone in front of your eyes, on your head. The device has built-in lenses, a focus regulator, Touchpad controls, volume control. In addition, there are additional sensors that record head tilt. This solution allows you to reduce image delay time and increase positioning accuracy. The sound also comes from the smartphone. Connection to it is made via the microUSB port.

Things are pretty promising as far as HMD display projects go. A number of fairly high-quality, exclusive gaming projects have already been prepared for the device: Gunjack, Land’s End, Omega Agent, and they were released even before the final release of the virtual helmet took place.

On the first day of winter, Samsung Gear VR became available for sale on the shelves of Russian stores. The recommended retail price is 7999 rubles.

Results

At the moment, apparently, the potential of virtual reality gadgets is truly enormous, and the expansion of the ecosystem of applications that support VR headsets is happening literally before our eyes. For example, a panoramic view was posted on Facebook spherical video(in fact, a video for a new episode of the Star Wars epic that will be released in a week) with a viewing angle of 360 degrees. YouTube is also not lagging behind, and will soon promise support for 3D video with the same viewing angle (by the way, to shoot such a video, you will need a device like NextVR, or its analogue). Another recent announcement is a dedicated 3D browser exclusive to Samsung Gear VR, which allows you to view the web using 3D virtual reality glasses in a fully immersive and detailed way.

What does the future hold for VR technology? Will these glasses be truly useful, or will they be just another geek fashion statement for one season? Most likely, the answer to this question can only be given in 5-10 years, when the line of devices has been tested, all the shortcomings and flaws (such as fogging during long-term use, possible headaches, heavy weight) will be taken into account and corrected. We will closely monitor new products in the 3D field, and as announcements of new applications and hardware devices appear, we will inform our readers about them on the pages of the web portal.

Hello, today I would like to tell you about my recent acquisition - 3D glasses for a smartphone. Not that this is a very necessary thing in the household, but it can be good entertainment for children of middle and high school age. Especially if they like to watch videos in 3D.

This product is delivered in a good quality cardboard box with inscriptions in pure Chinese.

Opening the lid of the package we see the hero of this review:

In addition to the box and plastic bag, pieces of protective film were glued to the lenses of the gadget as additional protection.

In addition to our miracle helmet, the factory kit includes “color” (black-white-blue) instructions, printed to my boundless surprise on glossy paper, a napkin for cleaning them and a piece double sided tape(not included in the frame:):

Taking the glasses out of the box, I was able to see a very funny shape of the backing. Or rather, not the shape, but the location of the holes :) It was through them that the instructions and the napkin were noticed:

After removing the device from the depths of the box into the light of day, you can begin to inspect them. The glasses are made quite well. The main material of the case is black matte plastic. Everything is molded to a very decent level and does not require finishing with a file, in the literal sense. The gadget is attached to the head using elastic bands. They are sewn just as well, nothing comes off anywhere, nothing becomes shaggy.

The store page states that the device is suitable for sharing with smartphones with a diagonal from 4 to 5.7 inches.

With such characteristics, the width of the compartment for mobile device for glasses is 15 centimeters:

Height - 9 centimeters:

The depth is also 9 centimeters:

So, the cell phone compartment lid is closed using a special spring-loaded latch. Opening it, you can see the inscription in Chinese located on the back of the cover. Unfortunately, my knowledge of the Chinese language does not allow me to convey to you the essence of what was written :(

This sticker is glued to the base of the mobile phone mount. On both sides there are special legs connected to each other using a spring. In order to secure the smartphone, just pull them apart. As soon as you release them, they will come together and securely fix your mobile phone. In order to minimize the possible interaction of the smartphone with the moving parts of the locking mechanism and, as a result, eliminate the appearance of scratches and abrasions, a small piece of foam rubber is glued to each of the plates.

Opposite the platform there are lenses that magnify the image. The internal space of the compartment is divided into two halves.

The lid is held on plastic hinges and opens freely to an angle exceeding 180 degrees. Reading reviews of similar devices, I saw that some have an opening angle of only 40 degrees, which makes inserting a smartphone inside not very convenient. There are no problems with this right now.

This is what it looks like inserted into Motorola Droid Razr M glasses with a diagonal of 4.3 inches.

The position of the lenses can be adjusted for precise fit and adjustment of the picture. Moreover, this can be done both horizontally and vertically. Horizontal displacement of the lenses relative to the eye is carried out using a special eyelet protruding from the body of the device by 1.5-2 millimeters. You can easily move it left and right while the device is on your head, thereby placing the lens directly in front of your eye.

Moving the lens away from the eye (or from the smartphone screen, whichever is more convenient) is done by twisting/twisting it.

I tried for a very long time to photograph the picture with both lenses, but unfortunately my photography skills were not enough for this. But the picture looks something like this:

Such glasses are a specific product and it is unlikely to be in wide demand, but there will definitely be a buyer for it. Using them makes you feel like you're watching a video on big screen, and not on your 4.5 inch smartphone. And I must say that the picture turns out to be of quite decent quality. If it were not for the large size, then these glasses could be used during long trips, but I would be happy to see the reaction of others who saw a person wearing such glasses on their head :) So, this is more likely a product for home use.

That's probably all. Thank you for your attention.
