In this review, we will look at best models HP tablets. Let's get acquainted with their characteristics, find out how much they cost, consider their positive and negative sides. We will select the optimal models in terms of price/quality ratio.
The American corporation HP is a recognized leader in many segments of electronics. She did not ignore such an interesting segment as tablet PCs. Moreover, the company’s debut in this niche was not entirely successful, since all gadgets were equipped with WebOS.
Realizing that users prefer Android and Windows, the company created several lines of HP tablets running on these systems.
Types of tablets
HP Corporation presents a large line of tablets, in different price segments, aimed at both ordinary users and business clients:
- SlateBook. A series of tablets with Android OS with high technical characteristics.
- ElitePad. Business segment of gadgets, with Windows OS (examples on Win 8 and 10) and Android. The characteristics of tablet PCs in this line significantly exceed the requirements of existing applications.
- Slate. A more budget-friendly version of the SlateBook line.
- TouchPad. Tablet PCs with WebOS OS. They are distinguished by a thin body.
- Pro Tablet. One of the most interesting in its own way technical specifications company lines. All models in the series are equipped with Intel Atom processors.
- Pavilion x2. Flagship series of tablets with a keyboard (a hybrid of a tablet and a laptop). The most technically equipped line.
- Omni. Line of gadgets with powerful processor and excellent front and rear cameras. The screen diagonal of all models in the series is 10 inches.
- Plus Tablet. The most budget-friendly series of HP tablets, all models have an attractive design.
How to choose a tablet
Indicators by which you should choose an HP tablet:
- Processor power and clock speed.
- Installed operating system.
- Camera sensor resolution power.
- Screen size and color rendition.
- Availability of wireless communication modules.
Advantages and disadvantages
A huge advantage of HP tablets is the big the lineup and the availability of business-class gadgets. The thin body of the products is also worth noting. The downside is that it is quite expensive.

Video review of HP Elite x2 1012 G2
How much do HP tablets cost: prices for the best models by parameters
Note: prices are based on 3-5 popular models that can now be purchased in stores.
Used business laptops are a completely common phenomenon, but tablets of this type are still capable of causing surprise and genuine interest. This happened with the Elite x2 1012, a new product from HP. The device is aimed at corporate employees and employees of large enterprises, but the average user can also acquire it with equal success.
It seems to us that there will really be a lot of people who want to purchase such a device. It looks very interesting and stylish, plus the body uses expensive materials, good hardware and a high-quality display. In addition, there are modifications with a keyboard dock, which allows you to turn a 12-inch gadget into a full-fledged laptop, albeit a miniature one. However, do not rush to immediately run to the store; perhaps the price tag of the new product will quickly cool your ardor.

Design
Only aluminum is used in the design of the device. This catches your eye immediately and leaves no doubt. The tablet cover, like the entire body as a whole, is made in a completely non-marking silver color. It is practically immune to light impacts and resists minor scratches. In addition, the lid does not bend, even if you apply special pressure. In the middle of the panel is the HP company logo with a mirror surface; it looks appropriate and very harmonious here. At the top is the rear webcam lens. At the bottom of the back surface of the Tablet PC there is a retractable stand that allows you to hold the gadget in a given position. There's nothing unusual about the front of the tablet. A narrow black frame with another webcam on its upper edge. I guess that's all. Oh yes, we almost forgot: some configurations include a keyboard dock, but as you understand, you will have to spend money on this “good of civilization”. The keyboard, by the way, looks ergonomic, which is facilitated by the large keys. And its aluminum work surface remains comfortably cool throughout the entire time, which is good news. By the way, the Tablet PC can be upgraded (the built-in memory and battery are replaced), however, we still do not recommend upgrading it yourself.
And finally, I would like to note such important aspects as build quality, weight and dimensions. Let's start from the end: the dimensions of the HP Elite x2 1012 are 300x214x8 mm (as you can see, the device is very thin), the device weighs 840 g, whatever one may say, and the metal does its job. By the way, the keyboard dock weighs only 385 g, so there probably wouldn’t be a stand in the tablet. top part would significantly outweigh the bottom. As for the build quality, there is nothing to say: it is excellent! The parts fit perfectly, there are no creaks, no backlashes, no bending.
Display, sound and webcam
The screen of the HP Elite x2 1012 is, frankly speaking, what you need! Its diagonal is 12 inches, resolution is Full HD (1920x1080), and pixel density per inch is 192 ppi. The glossy surface is further protected by Corning glass Gorilla Glass 4, so the user may not worry about the safety of the display as much as, for example, the owner of another regular tablet. However, extra caution still won’t hurt, because protective glass does not mean that the gadget will always look perfect if handled carelessly. There are no problems with brightness (up to 340 cd/m2) and contrast; the output picture can be described as juicy, saturated and very realistic. Thanks to the TFT IPS matrix, viewing angles are very wide, so no matter how you turn the tablet, no matter what angle you choose, the screen will not lose anything in color reproduction. Of course, the display is touch-sensitive, it is characterized by a quick response, therefore, prompt execution of commands, without the slightest slowdown. The package includes an HP Active Pen stylus with Wacom technology, the work of which, without a doubt, many users will appreciate.
The device has two Bang & Olufsen stereo speakers, which performed very well. Of course, bass and high frequencies is not enough, but it is necessary to make allowance for the fact that the device in question is not a laptop, but a tablet. In general, the sound is pleasant, at maximum the sound does not sound hoarse, in short, to reproduce anything in an office or room, the acoustic capabilities of the tablet will be quite enough.
As for webcams, here, as in most other tablet PCs, there are two of them. The front webcam has a resolution of 2 megapixels, with its help it is very comfortable to communicate via Skype or carry out video communication using any other program.
The main camera is 5 megapixels, and you can take very good photos with it. There is a flash, as well as the ability to shoot video. In general, everything a modern gadget needs is provided here.
Keyboard
As we already mentioned, the keyboard is optional, and our modification does not provide it. However, if you opt for a more expensive package with a keyboard dock, you will never regret it. In this case, we can confidently say that it is even better than in many laptops!By the way, there are two variations with keyboards. They have identical appearance and functionality, but one has a slot for Smart cards and NFC, while the other has none of this. Otherwise, the keyboard dock is ergonomic, typing on it is a pleasure, and even with long typing, your hands will be comfortable. The palm surface is made of silver aluminum, the buttons are square black. The keys have average travel and good feedback, and are backlit. A few words about the touchpad: it has a glass surface and supports various multi-touch gestures, including zooming, scrolling and many others.
In the absence of a familiar keyboard, the user will have to use a virtual one, that is, use the HP Elite x2 1012 for its intended purpose. This will not be difficult, because the fingers of the vast majority of modern users are accustomed to touch input and take it for granted. The only thing that can cause difficulty is hitting the cross that covers the window. On the other hand, you can always use a stylus.
Performance
The HP Elite x2 1012 G1 (L5H00EA) business tablet comes with the Windows 10 Home 64-bit operating system. The modification described in this review includes a dual-core Intel Core m3-6Y30 processor of the Skylake generation. The clock frequency varies between 0.9-2.2 GHz, there is support for Hyper-Threading multi-threading technology (two cores simultaneously process four threads). The chip is made using a 14nm process technology, the Level 3 cache is 4 MB, and the TDP level is very low - only 4.5 W.The graphics component of the tablet is represented by an Intel HD Graphics 515 video card. It supports DirectX 12 and works with 24 units at frequencies from 300 to 1000 MHz (Boost). We will have to disappoint those who hope to play anything on this device. The fact is that its filling can only cope with the simple toys of yesteryear. For example, Metro: Last Light (2013) or Anno 2070 from 2011 will show 30 frames per second at medium settings and HD resolution. At the same time, the latter on ultra with a native resolution of 1920x1080 pixels will actually be unplayable at 9 fps.
There is enough RAM in the tablet - 4 GB of LPDDR3 1866 MHz standard out of a maximum possible 8 GB. Built-in memory is 128 GB, but if you wish, you can increase its amount by the same amount using a memory card.
Ports and communications
The HP Elite x2 1012 provides a fairly diverse set of interfaces. Yes, with right side visible to the naked eye USB ports Type-C (with Thunderbolt support) and USB 3.0. There is also a combined audio jack and microSD card reader (SDXC/SDHC). By the way, using USB Type-C, you can connect a docking station, for which you will have to pay an additional $299.On the left side there are two physical buttons (power and volume rocker), a slot for a SIM card (optional), and a slot for a Kensington lock. In addition, here you can see a button, after pressing which the tablet stand is activated.
Sensors include an accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, light sensor, proximity sensor, and an optional fingerprint scanner. Wireless communications include Wi-Fi 802.11 ac and Bluetooth 4.2.
Battery
The tablet has 4 sections lithium ion battery capacity 40 Wh. The battery life is enough for about 10 hours, not very much. active work, and this is a pretty good result. Of course, active use of the gadget will lead to the battery running out faster, but, by and large, the device will last 7-8 hours in web surfing or video viewing mode. At maximum load the number of hours will drop to 2-2.5, but this is quite normal for any tablet PC, not just for this product.Widget from SocialMart
Conclusion
The HP Elite x2 1012 has plenty of advantages. As befits a business attribute, the tablet looks stylish and presentable, always being the center of attention. It has a durable screen with excellent performance and rich color reproduction, so the gadget is ideal for colorful presentations, as well as for viewing movies, photos, etc. in an informal setting. Some modifications come with a keyboard dock that turns the 12-inch device into a full-fledged laptop. However, you can successfully work without it, using, for example, a stylus, which is an integral part of every configuration, even the most budget one. Speaking of price. The version we described has the most “modest” price tag – $899 (on the manufacturer’s website), while the maximum threshold for the top-end configuration is $1649. For most ordinary users, this is, frankly, not the most budget option, but for the business segment, the cost of the tablet is not very affordable.
I would like to note that the HP Elite x2 1012 hardware, at least in the configuration we are describing, is not designed to perform demanding tasks. For example, toys, if they are launched, will only be old and uncomplicated. But, again, for the role of an assistant in running a business, the capabilities of the tablet should be enough. Otherwise, you can take a closer look at the top-end configuration. In general, despite the fact that the HP Elite x2 1012 is a representative of a very narrowly targeted market niche mobile devices, there will definitely be demand for it, because the tablet has something to express itself!
Today's hero of the review is not a simple laptop, but another attempt to create an easy-to-use tablet-laptop hybrid. I present to your attention the HP Elite x2 1012 G1.
Initially, HP is positioning its new device tailored to the business segment. Accordingly, the emphasis of the advantages is different: durability, reliability and safety.
The laptop is designed for use both in offices and on trips/flights.
The two types of aluminum alloy make the laptop lightweight, and the Corning Gorilla Glass 4 display protection is strong.
Appearance
I don't even know what to call it this device: laptop or tablet? Let's stick to the tablet. Or a laptop? In general, the body of the device is almost entirely made of silver aluminum. On the back of the lid there is a small plastic insert, under which there is an antenna, camera, led flash and a fingerprint sensor. In the previous version of the device, the sensor was located on the keyboard unit; in this version, it is not necessary to connect the keyboard - the bug has been fixed.
The dimensions of the device depend on the configuration. Without the HP Travel keyboard, the tablet dimensions are 300x213.5x8.05 mm and weighs 820 grams; with keyboard - 300x213.5x13.45 with a weight of 1205 grams.
On the lid, in addition to the plastic insert, there is a glossy HP logo.
On top of it are Bang & Olufsen speakers and two microphones.
On the right side there is a headphone jack, a USB-C connector, a slot for microSD and under it a microUSB connector and a diode indicating the status of the gadget: white - the battery is full, orange - power is in progress.
On the left side there is a power key, a volume button, a SIM card slot and a special recess for a stand or holding a pen.
It is worth understanding that the entire description is for a tablet located in a landscape position. At the bottom there is a magnetic connector for connecting a keyboard. The connector itself holds the device quite tenaciously. Additional “tenacity” is given by the cover, which is attached to the metal using magnets.
HP Travel Keyboard
The main part of the keyboard is also made of metal, the outer side is covered with soft gray fabric. Chiclet keys have standard size and smooth running. The touchpad is located under the keys and responds to multi-touch gestures.
Connection occurs only through physical contact with the tablet through the connector. At the same time, if the keys are removed behind the tablet, the keyboard does not respond to presses. There are no complaints about the ergonomics of the keyboard.
Display
HP Elite x2 1012 G1 received a 12-inch display with FullHD resolution 1920x1080, with an aspect ratio of 3:2 - this is the best option for a hybrid, providing comfortable performance in both landscape and portrait orientation. LED lights combined with Direct Bonding technology provide Elite x2 1012 G1 high level brightness and contrast, but even this is not enough for comfortable work in bright sunlight due to the glossy finish. The oleophobic coating copes with fingerprints - there are few of them left and they are easily erased.
Job
Since the laptop is designed for the business segment, it works well with the pen. If you are not using a mouse, then a long tap on the icon causes context menu. In addition, you can use the stylus to click on small icons, or zoom in
I would like to make a separate point about the list of technologies that may seem interesting even to the most biased user:
- Security system at the BIOS level - HP Sure Start
- HP Touchpoint Manager Administration Service
- Integrated security features
HP Active Pen
Let's talk a little more about the pen. The tablet comes with an HP Active Pen stylus from Wacom. The pen recognizes 2048 levels of pressure and tilt angle, which means it is perfect not only for writing simple notes, but also for drawing.
The dimensions of the stylus are 147.29x9.5 mm, weight - 17.5 grams. It fits comfortably in the hand; there are several keys on the body that are responsible for canceling an action, erasing, calling an application, etc. As I already mentioned, you can assign your options in the settings.
The screen reacts not only to a direct touch of the stylus, but also when presented to the screen at a distance.
Iron
The processor used is a dual-core Intel Core m7-6Y75 with a clock frequency of 1.2-3.1 GHz (increase is provided by technology Intel Turbo Boost); Intel HD Graphics 515 is responsible for graphics.
Volume random access memory- 8 GB. The built-in volume is 256 MB, there is support for memory expansion using a microSD card up to 200 GB.
Cameras
Round numbers look more familiar. And if you wanted, you could also list ten advantages of the new 2-in-1 device from HP. But during a week of testing the HP Elite X2 1012 G1, I identified exactly nine points for myself and arranged them in order of personal preference.
Design
Unreal stylish transformer. If you can say “wow effect” about some youth devices, then in this case there should be something more respectfully merchant-like – “eva effect”! Solid and stylish metal body, upper part back cover– mirror stripe with logo. One colleague didn’t like the mirror, and the frames were too wide, but that’s a matter of taste. Everything fits well, does not creak or play. The folding stand is moderately tight and holds the tablet vertically on the table in any position.
Tablet
Sometimes in 2-in-1 devices the tablet is some kind of compromise... but not here. The sensor clearly responds to finger touches, not to mention the proprietary stylus. A diagonal of 12 inches, translated into conventional units, is a good 30 centimeters. The space allows you to place maximum content and comfortably work with any work files. The Full HD resolution (1920x1280) is not prohibitive by today's standards, but I didn't want more. The viewing angles and picture are definitely good.
Fingerprint scanner
It’s not for nothing that analysts from IDC say that biometric access will be used on half of all devices in the coming years. Even now, 15% of devices have recognition tools, and it’s good that the HP Elite X2 1012 G1 was among them. For a week I never had to enter a password, not counting the first day when you were just setting everything up. The fingerprint scanner is located so that it was most convenient for me to take fingerprints from the index finger of my left hand. Quite natural. I just grabbed the tablet by the top corner and was already logged in.
Keyboard
Outside – felt, inside – metal. The keyboard is island-shaped, with all function keys and a large touchpad. Magnets to the tablet when tilted, but you can lay it flat on a table. Convenient both ways. Checked when writing notes for this text. Even if you have to tinker with it for a long time Word document or Excel, your fingers are unlikely to get tired. Comfort, if not top-end, is quite laptop-like. And this with a weight of less than one kilogram.
Stylus
This is Wacom, gentlemen. An active pen that is perfectly read by the matrix even at a short distance from the screen (I hope this is visible in the title photo). In a week I hardly had to touch the screen with my fingers. I made do with a keyboard with a large touchpad and stylus.
The three pen buttons work differently in different applications. For example, the bottom one in Autodesk Sketchbook switches from drawing to eraser. While working in any application, pressing the top button (like clicking a fountain pen) brings up OneNote. Everything is ready for handwriting recognition, you can immediately write an urgent note. You still need to try to load this stylus with work to the fullest. I wish it was already August 2, download the Anniversary Update and start using the pen capabilities that Windows Ink will open. By the way, the device is magnetic to the keyboard, so you won’t accidentally sweep it off the table.
"Iron"
During operation, the tablet never froze, which is logical given its “strong” configuration (Intel Core m5-6Y54, 4 GB of RAM, 128 GB). This is at ten open tabs Microsoft browser Edge and three office apps. Of course, I would like to get an option with 8 GB RAM and 256 SSD - it should just fly.
Battery
In normal mode it worked for a long time. Dot. Largely thanks to the energy-efficient Intel Core m5-6Y54. Still, it was a successful series mobile processors. No stress tests were carried out, just all office tasks were completed during the day, as well as web surfing and briefly watching videos.
Equipment
The feeling of a well-built device itself extends to the entire package. Although in fact there was a feeling that there was even something superfluous here, for example, a disk with software in the absence of a disk drive. This device only needs a power cable - and it's here. Adapters are not required, since the case has both standard USB 3.0 and the latest USB Type-C connector. The most richly equipped stylus is a separate package, spare “leads” and other accessories.
Software features
HP Elite X2 1012 G1 is a 2-in-1 business device with a powerful 64-bit operating system. Windows system 10 Pro with advanced features. In addition, HP has taken care to improve ease of use and security. If you don't have an administrator, HP Support Assistant can help you maintain your device. You can enhance data security using the HP Client Security application, which also allows you to configure login when forgotten password(HP Spare Key) and encrypt information on the hard drive (HP Drive Encryption). In addition, there are various little things like setting up audio with the Bang&Olufsen utility, as well as trial version convenient Foxit PhantomPDF application with a clear “office” interface.
