Internet access is a necessary attribute of modern reality. They watch movies on the World Wide Web, find necessary information, communicate with friends, watch the lives of celebrities. Therefore, if error 651 appears when connecting to the Internet, the first reaction most often resembles fear. However, such a message is associated with technical problems that you can try to resolve yourself.

Error value 651 when connecting to the Internet

The appearance of error message 651 on the monitor has a hardware and software nature associated with problems in the equipment responsible for accessing World Wide Web resources. It means that something went wrong when trying to connect via a high-speed WAN Miniport (PPPoE) connection. The procedure for eliminating the unfortunate failure depends on the cause that caused it.

Reasons for the error

The range of reasons that cause error message 651 is quite wide:

  • unconnected network cable;
  • viral infection;
  • network card malfunction;
  • problems with the performance of the router;
  • outdated/inoperative drivers;
  • raspppoe.sys file mismatch;
  • presence of a connected second network output;
  • encoding differences, etc.

If the problems are related to a malfunction in the signal line itself, then a call to the provider’s technical support service will solve all the problems. If the problem is in network equipment or personal computer user, then you will have to fix the problem yourself.

How to fix the problem

How to resolve the problem depends on what caused the 651 error.

Restarting the computer

A universal method that allows you to cope with most problems that arise, if they are not caused by more serious violations. You can simply activate the restart button or completely turn off the computer and turn on the power again. In both cases, the system will be loaded from the very beginning, and if the problem was untimely delivery of a signal about the health of the network card or router, then the message will no longer appear.

Reconfiguring the network connection

This method involves deleting the existing connection and running the Internet Connection Setup Wizard. Depending on operating system configuration dialog boxes the masters may differ slightly, but the essence will remain the same. As a result, after rebooting the OS, a working connection will be created that will not disturb the user with an error message.

The algorithm of actions is as follows:

Reinstalling or updating network drivers

In any case, you will need to use another computer or device that connects to the Internet without problems, since working drivers must be downloaded from the developer’s official website. In a situation where there is no second computer with network access, we reinstall the drivers manually. If the problem is related to the functioning of the network card, then it is enough to perform a number of the following manipulations:

Video: updating/reinstalling network card drivers

Disabling the second network access

There are situations when the user’s computer is equipped with two network cards or can connect to the Internet in two ways: wired and wireless. In this case, one of the connections “interrupts” the action of the second, causing an error message. The solution to this problem is obvious - disconnect the second connection and check its functionality. For prevention, you can disable and enable each of the network access channels. Manipulations are performed in the Network Control Center and shared access by changing adapter parameters.

Checking the modem's functionality

This method will require another device capable of accessing the network. The modem is connected to it and they try to access the World Wide Web. If the error message no longer appears, then the problem is not at all with the router. If the system again classifies the connection failure as error 651, then you will have to call the provider’s specialists to replace or repair the unit.

Disabling the security system

In this case, it is necessary to disable not only the antivirus, but also the Windows firewall and firewall. If the connection is restored after this, you need to enable the security system and run a total anti-virus scan of your computer.

Reinstalling the operating system

To implement this option, you will need a disk or flash drive with the OS. The user will need to log in BIOS settings and activate download from removable media. After which the installation wizard will offer an installation option and carry out all the required procedures.

Restoring router settings

For this option, you need to open the modem management web interface; the specific address is indicated on the equipment or can be clarified by calling the provider’s technical support specialists. The settings are located in the Internet or WAN section. A few notes, taking into account which will allow you to restore your Internet connection:

Rollback to an earlier healthy state

Implementing this method is possible if you have restore points. The essence is simple - a request to repeat the configuration of all parameters in accordance with the nearest system restore point.

Checking the correctness of the VPN server address

This option is used in cases where access to the network is through a proxy server. When you set a specific IP address in the settings, problems with accessing the network may occur. The appearance of an error indicates that the connection is functioning, but due to incorrectness of some parameters it cannot connect to the nearest server.

Checking sockets, cables and connections with a special tester

Interference in the signal path does not allow the device to connect to the network and causes error message 651. Having discovered a faulty element, replace it yourself or with the help of a specialist.

Adjusting registry settings

This solution to the problem is used in cases where the computer is running Windows 2003 and displays manual installation PPTP protocol error 651, and when automatic detection- error 800. The procedure in this situation is as follows:

  1. Open the command line (Start/Run) and enter regedit.
  2. In the registry that opens, we sequentially go through the following path - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/Tcpip/Parameters.
  3. We create a function of type DWORD, calling it EnableRSS and assigning the value 0 - it will disable ReceiveSide Scaling.
  4. Here we create the Disable TaskOffload parameter with the value 1 - if such a parameter already exists, then we check and adjust its value.
  5. Reboot the computer.

Thus, the occurrence of error message 651 when connecting to the Internet is associated with errors in the software or hardware access to the network. Understanding the mechanism by which such problems occur, you can try to solve this problem yourself by consistently performing the actions and manipulations suggested above. The solution options are presented in order of their complexity; in the absence of minimal knowledge about the operation of the modem and computer, it is wiser to seek help from the specialists of the provider or the nearest service center.

In this article, I would like to clarify one incomprehensible situation, which is associated with the appearance of error 651 when starting a high-speed connection through a router. I will explain why this error occurs and what needs to be done to get rid of it.

Honestly, if you understand how a router works, you are unlikely to encounter this error. But, as it turns out, such a problem arises. So, recently in the comments they asked me for help. The problem was that the person installed and sort of configured the router, but after that, when he tried to start a connection on the computer, he got error 651. And that’s it, he couldn’t connect to the Internet.

I tried to explain as simply as possible why this was happening, but they didn’t understand me, or didn’t want to understand. In the end it turned out that I don’t know anything and am just being smart :). It was a funny correspondence. If you are interested, you can look at the first comment via the link. Comment from the author Roman (read our correspondence).

After such an incident, I decided to write this article, and also tell you why error 651 appears after installing the router.

In this article, we will look at the case when “Error 651” appears only when connecting to the Internet through a router.

Simply, this error can also occur when the cable is connected directly to the computer. Then the problem is most often in the operating system (I recommend deleting and re-creating the high-speed connection), or on the provider side.

Everything is much simpler than it seems. The main thing here is to understand how the router works. I will now write approximate actions that result in the error we are talking about today.

Why does error 651 occur when connecting through a router?

Look here. We have a provider that provides Internet using PPPoE technology. This means that you have created and configured a high-speed connection on your computer, which you launch to connect to the Internet.

We installed the router, perhaps even configured it. We connect to the Internet on the computer and see:

Error 651: The modem or other communication device reported an error.

By Wi-Fi devices They will connect, but most likely there will be no Internet access.

That's actually the whole problem.

How to solve this problem?

After installing and configuring the router, the high-speed connection on your computer can be removed, we don't need it! This is the main thing to understand in solving this problem.

By default, the router operates in mode Router(logical :)), which means that he will call the provider and establish a connection to the Internet. And simply distribute the Internet to your computers, laptops, phones, etc. But you no longer need to create and launch a connection on your computer. Simply enough, or via Wi-Fi and everything will work. Without any connections there. The router will establish the connection.

You can, of course, use the mode Bridge. In which you connect the Internet to the router, and the computer to the router. In this case, PPPoE connection must be configured and run on your computer. But this makes no sense, the Internet will simply pass through the router and nothing more. It’s better to just connect the cable directly to the computer.

On the tab WAN by selecting the connection type PPPoE you need to ask everything required parameters. You can find them out from your provider, or look at the contract that you were given when connecting to the Internet.

Also one nuance, do not forget to check the box next to “Connect Automatically” (connect automatically).

After configuration, the router will connect to the Internet and distribute it to all devices. Without additional connections etc.

I hope I was able to clarify this issue.

Leave your questions in the comments. Best wishes!

Error 651 is one of the most common messages when connecting to the Internet in Windows 7, Windows 8 and 10. Connection failure with error 651 can happen not only with Rostelecom, Dom ru, MTS and Beeline, but also with any other providers. It usually appears with the text “The modem or other communication device reported an error.” One of the error variations:

One of the options for error 651.

No matter what your window looks like with a connection failure with error 651, there is only one way out of it, and we will look at it below.

What to do if the Internet is connected directly via a cable from the provider and error 651 appears

If you need to click on a similar icon to access the Internet, regardless of whether your modem or router is connected to your computer, read on. If you don't need to do anything other than open a browser to get online, skip this header. Typically error code 651 and its solution in Windows 7 is identical to the solution in Windows 8 and Windows 10.

If you have a similar shortcut to connect to the Internet, but the computer is connected to the router, then it is in Bridge mode. If this is the case, try turning off the router for 10 - 15 minutes, then turning it on and trying to connect again. If there is no router or rebooting did not help, read on.

So, here is a list of actions that need to be performed:

First of all, check the cable connection. If you have an ADSL modem, check to see if the "DSL" or "Line" indicator on your modem is lit. If it is blinking, the reasons for connection failure with error 651 are due to a problem on the line. If your PC is connected to a twisted pair cable, check the reliability of its connection. Usually at the point where the cable connects to motherboard There are indicators that indicate operation. If there is no such indicator, check the connection status in network connections.

Connection indicators. If they are present, but do not light up (or blink), there is probably a problem with the cable.

Go to Control Panel/Network and Internet/Network Connections. If there is no “Network Connections” item, open “Change adapter settings”. Select network connection, press right click and select "Status".

If the “environment state” is connected, and the speed is 100 Mbit/s or 1.0 Gbit/s, then everything is in order with the cable. If the status says “connected”, but the speed is 10 Mbps, most likely there are some problems with the cable. If you do not find any problems with the cable, proceed to next step to fix error code 651.

Second, call your provider. The fact is that the problem may be on his side. In this case, no actions on your part will not only help, but will also do a lot of harm. Please note that the standard response from technical support is to reboot everything possible. In other words, reboot your PC and router, if you have one, and only then call technical support. The technical support number can be found on the provider’s official website.

If your Internet connection stops working after changes you made or you created it yourself, then you entered the connection parameters incorrectly.

Please check your connection information and try again.

Third. Buy a router or configure your existing one in router mode. The fact is that even if you have a router, but you have to access the Internet through a shortcut, there is practically no point in it. To take full advantage of its capabilities, you need to configure it. Then any devices will be able to connect to it without manually opening the connection.

If you can usually connect to your router from any device and you have internet on each of them, your router is configured correctly.

If, to access the Internet, you need to connect through a connection shortcut on your computer, your router is in Bridge mode. It must be reconfigured to “Router” mode.

Error 651 when connecting through a router

If your router is in Bridge mode (see above), you need to complete all the steps described above. If it works in router mode, the Internet does not need to be connected through a computer. You just need to turn it on.

In other words, if your router is working properly, you don't need to open High Speed Connection on your computer. And if there is no Internet, you need to configure the router itself. The best solution in this case would be to call the provider - its number can be found on the official website.

If everything is fine with the provider, but there is no Internet.

It also happens that the problem is in the computer itself. To make sure that this is not the problem, follow these tips:

  • If you have an ADSL modem and there was a thunderstorm recently, it may have failed. A flashing “Link” or “DSL” indicator may indicate a faulty modem or telephone line.
  • Try deleting valid connection and create it again. To do this, find instructions from the provider and connection information (login, password)
  • Reset network settings. To right-click on “Command Prompt”, which is located in the Start->Service menu.

Run Command Prompt as Administrator

IN command line enter:

netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset

After entering the commands, the computer must be restarted
  • Try disabling your antivirus
  • Try updating the drivers to network card
  • It happens that the provider does not close the old session and for this reason a new one does not open. Usually it is enough to disconnect the computer/router from the cable through which the Internet is received and wait about 30 minutes. After that, connect everything back and turn on the devices. This usually helps with connection failure with error 651.
  • Try disabling ipv6 for your network connection. To do this, go to “Control Panel/Network and Internet/Network Connections”, right-click on the network connection, open “Properties”, uncheck “TCP / IPv6”.

Properties->Uncheck TCP IPv6->Ok

If all of the above tips did not help, write in the comments and we will definitely help you. But do not forget that the problem may be on the provider's side, even if he denies it. For greater reliability, we recommend that you check another computer and router.

Error 651 when connecting to the Internet means that it is impossible to connect to the World Wide Web.

Moreover, it can arise at the most different systems, not only in Windows 7. Even Linux and similar operating systems also have it, but it’s just called a little differently.

In any case, it would be useful to understand what this error means and how to fix it.

Simply put, error 651 means some kind of failure of the PPPoE protocol, which is used by the vast majority of providers today.

But finding the root of problems is often very problematic. Let's look at the most common causes of error 651.

Typically this error looks like this:

Reason #1. Physical connection

If your laptop or PC displays error 651, the first thing you need to do is check your RJ45 connector, that is, the tip of the wire through which the signal to connect to the Internet passes.

Specifically, it looks like this:

To do this, you need to remove it from the computer connector, inspect it for any dents or other types of damage, and simply blow it out so that all the dust flies out of it.

It happens that even the “extract and insert” procedure itself is enough to restore the connection to the Internet. The same can be done with the connector.

In addition, all visible wiring should be checked for any defects.

Often the reason why a signal cannot pass through can be because the wire is bent or because someone has placed something heavy on it.

Of course, you shouldn’t go up to the roof - if there are no defects on the visible part of the wire, move on to the next point.

Reason #2. Settings failed

If these methods do not help, you should pay attention to the security system that is installed on the computer.

Modem error 651 can also occur due to malfunctioning antivirus and firewall.

Reason #3. Security systems

To eliminate this cause, you need to disconnect all these systems and try to reconnect to the World Wide Web.

The first thing you need to do to try to fix the connection failure is your antivirus.

Everyone has their own antivirus, some don't have it at all (which isn't smart), so single way There is no such program to disable it. You need to look at the user manual.

But almost any antivirus has an exit function, which appears when you click on the antivirus icon in the panel quick launch. This is what it looks like for Kaspersky.

As for the firewall, if you have not installed any additional firewall other than the standard one that is found in all Windows, then disabling it will look like this:

  • Go to the “Start” menu, then select “Control Panel” (in Figure No. 7 it is highlighted with a green frame). After that, go to “System and Security”.

  • In the window that opens, select “Windows Firewall”.

  • In the window that opens, in the menu located on the left side, select “Turn Windows Firewall on or off.”

  • Check the box next to “Turn off Windows Firewall.”

After this, you should restart your computer. If it doesn’t help, move on to the next point.

Reason #4. TCP/IP problem

If the problem is really in the TCP/IP protocol, then error 651 may also occur when connecting to a router. As for how to eliminate it in this case, this is done in the following way:

  • Go to microsoft.com/kb/299357 and download there special program to reset TCP/IP protocol settings. This is done very simply.
After following the link, you need to scroll (scroll the mouse wheel) the page down and find two “Download” buttons there and if you have Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows 7 installed, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2008 R2, click on the first one.
Accordingly, if there is some other system, go to the second one. The view of this window is shown in Figure 11.

  • After downloading, you just need to run it. The program will do everything itself. The user will only have to restart the computer.

If this does not help, the only option is the problem with network card.

Reason #5. Network card

As for the network card, the problem may arise with its drivers - they may be out of date or not working correctly.

At least, this is the only problem that can be dealt with without the involvement of a specialist.

The network card may well fail completely. In any case, you should update the drivers.

To do this, go to the “Control Panel” again, there in the search bar (highlighted in red in the figure below) we write “Device Manager”.

After that we see a list of these dispatchers. We need the one next to which it says “Updating device drivers.” Click on it.

After opening the manager, you need to find the item “ Network adapters", select yours there by its name (there may be virtual ones), right-click on it and click on the inscription "Update drivers ...".

These and other methods can be clearly seen in the video below.

Error 651 Windows 8: How to fix it

Some Windows users 8 sometimes encounter an unexpected error 651. Not knowing how to solve this problem, they often reinstall the OS.

Error 651- the most insidious of errors Windows connections . It arises - and you don’t know where to dig and from which side to look for the problem. Error 651 when connecting to the Internet can mean many things - problems with your equipment, problems with the provider’s equipment, failure of the PPPoE protocol on your computer, etc. First things first, reboot your computer and modem - ADSL or GPON - and check the connection. After this, call back the provider’s technical support and ask if there are any problems on your line and if any work is underway engineering works. This happens with any provider: Rostelecom, MTS, Dom.ru, ByFly. As a result, you will spend hours tormenting your equipment, trying to remove error 651, and the cause will turn out to be a problem on the telecom operator’s equipment.
Sometimes it happens that the reason for error 651 is simply a failure of the operating system and you just need to reboot operating system Windows.

Error 651 in Windows 8 Windows 8.1, due to the interface features, may look like this:

But the answer to the question of what to do and how to fix connection failure with error 651 is the same for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1.

Correction options:

1. If you are connected via ADSL via a modem.

Look at the DSL or Line indicator - it should burn continuously or blink very very quickly. If it does not light up or blinks slowly, check the modem connection, splitter and room wiring. Until there is a DSL link, you will constantly receive 651 connection errors, since there is no channel with the provider. Try connecting the modem directly at the entrance to the apartment (without a splitter or telephones) and see if a link appears. If it doesn’t show up, call your provider and get an installer to check the line. If the DSL link lights up stably, but Windows still displays error 651, then go to the modem settings and in the WAN or Internet section check whether the VPI and VCI parameters are entered correctly. If they are entered incorrectly, you will also receive Error 651. You can find out your VPI/VCI parameters from your provider’s technical support. The second point is that the connection type must be Bridge. If it's worth PPPoE, then the connection is made from a modem and then it distributes the Internet to the connected devices. Of course, when you try to connect from them, you will receive a connection error 651 - miniport wan because the modem in this mode will not allow a connection over its own.

2. If you are connected via FTTB (fiber to the home) and you have a router and Error 651 is displayed.

A logical question arises: why are you starting the connection from your computer? The point of the router is to connect to the provider and distribute the Internet to connected devices.

If your provider cable is plugged into the LAN port of the router, this is not correct. The provider's cable must be connected to the WAN port, and a PPPoE connection must be configured on the router. Therefore, we go to the router settings and reconfigure it to router mode (PPPoE).

3. If you are connected via GPON (fiber to the apartment), you have an optical terminal and the connection fails.

In the case of GPON - everything is the same as with ADSL - you must have an optical link, and your optical ONT terminal must be configured in Bridge mode. If it is in PPPoE or Routing mode, then when you try to start a high-speed connection you will always receive network error 651 - Wan Miniport.

4. You are connected directly with a cable to the network card, or your ADSL modem or GPON terminal is configured correctly, but you cannot connect to the Internet.

In this case, try the following. We delete the high-speed connection - the so-called “dialer” - and create it again.

The screenshot shows how to stop antivirus protection. To stop also Firewall— select from the menu corresponding value and turn it off. And here How to disable Kaspersosky Anti-Virus or and Kaspersky Internet Security:

6. The network card has failed.

There are times when, due to some kind of failure or error, the network card or its driver begins to “corrupt.” You need to try reinstalling the network card. To do this, you need to press the Win + R key combination - the “Run” window will open. We write the command in it devmgmt.msc and click OK. The Windows Device Manager will open:

Finding the section Network cards, which houses the NIC controller - the most common ones are Realtek, Nvidia, Atheros, Intel or Via. Right-click on it and select Delete. After this, restart the computer. Windows will re-detect and install the network card drivers, but just in case, a disk or archive with the driver should always be at hand.

7. Problems with the modem or optical terminal.

Yes, malfunctions occur on different models modems and terminals - both cheap and expensive. The modem can start to fail due to various reasons: faulty firmware, unstable power supply, errors on the channel, etc. This is normal practice. To exclude this option, you need to reset the modem using the button Reset, which is located on the back of the device:

Before resetting the settings, go to the web interface, find the Internet section and save the data for connecting to the provider and authorization. Otherwise, you may encounter the fact that after resetting the settings, you do not know how to configure the modem.
After that, with the modem turned on, press the button with a paper clip Reset and wait 7-8 minutes. The modem should blink the diodes on its face and reboot.
If you have a GPON ONT terminal, call your provider back and report a suspected malfunction of the terminal. Typically, optical terminals are configured remotely by the operator. Your device settings will be checked and the result will be reported.

P.S. Finally, I would like to note that on some websites on the Internet they advise going into the registry and adding parameters like “EnableRSS” or “DisableTaskOffload”. So this only helps on Windows Server 2003, and then only when Error 651 occurs on PPTP or L2TP connections. It is useless to do this on Windows 7 and Windows 8!
