Logging into Gmail.com - first steps

After this, the very first thing you should try is to clear all the history (cookies) of your browser. From the reviews of several users on the Internet, this is what helped them.

If it worked, great, if not, read on:

  1. Click on the following link: Sign in to Gmail
  2. A Gmail login form will appear, where one of your addresses will already be entered. And below there will be a link “Login to another account” or "Sing in with a different account"(if yours is in English) - click on it.

On the same page, where you get the answer “Name is already taken,” there is a circle with a person in the upper right corner (or with your avatar). Click on it and select Add an account. Next, enter your address, password and click Login.

Current status:

Active

Gmail(from Google Mail, pronounced Gmail or gmail) - free service email from the American company Google. Provides access to mailboxes via a web interface and via the POP3, SMTP and IMAP protocols.

In October 2012 Gmail service has become the most popular service in the world, surpassing Microsoft's competing Hotmail service in the number of unique users.

For users of this postal service an email address in the gmail.com domain is provided (such as [email protected]) and an alias in the googlemail.com domain ( [email protected]) . The service offers over 10 gigabytes of space for mail storage, and this number has been constantly increasing since April 1, 2005, when, in honor of the anniversary of the launch of the service, the available space was increased from 1 GB to 2 GB. This announcement was accompanied by a promise that Google will increase the volume it offers to users. On April 24, 2012, Google announced an increase in size mailbox from 7.5 GB to 10 GB in honor of the launch of Google Drive. On this moment Gmail mailbox space is 10.1 GB.

To promote the system, the company invited a thousand random users to try it out. Initially, to create a mailbox, you had to receive an invitation from someone who already had a mailbox, or, for US residents, identity verification was required via text message SMS. Free registration is currently open to residents of all countries. The beta status was removed on July 8, 2009.

Email confidentiality incidents

IN postal system integrated display of contextual advertising. This caused a lot of criticism, with some media outlets suggesting that Google was reading these letters and analyzing them. Google management assured users that data is analyzed only by machines, not people, but despite this, criticism of the contextuality of advertising lasted several years. A number of human rights activists who criticized Google tested it Post service and were pleased with it.

Peculiarities

Gmail offers a number of innovations that were not available in other email services:

  • Developed contact list. For each interlocutor, a photograph, addresses and telephone numbers can be specified.
  • Autofill- substitution of addresses from the list that is displayed when typing in the “To” line by user name or email address, even partially typed; functions “Don’t forget Bob” and “Got the wrong Bob?” - the first suggests a “forgotten” addressee for letters with several recipients, the second corrects the recipient’s address so that a letter is not accidentally sent to the wrong addressee with a similar name.
  • Built-in spell checker. Automatically detects the language of the message and offers suggestions for spelling incorrect words.
  • Message filters. Possibility of both manual (customizable) and automatic (automatic filtering function) Priority Inbox And SmartLabels) incoming messages.
  • Shortcuts. Letters are not entered into folders, but are divided into categories according to assigned labels, which the user can add and change (labels can be marked in different colors for convenience). The efficiency of this mechanism is slightly higher than the more traditional one with folders, since it is possible to combine different combinations of shortcuts. There are "standard" shortcuts, e.g. inbox(Inbox) or chats(Chats).
    • Archiving. If your email box is large, you don’t need to delete emails to free up space; just remove the label from them inbox(Inbox) to archive them.
  • Autosave. When editing messages, a draft message is automatically saved once a minute to prevent data loss in the event of a power outage or other failure.
  • View discussions. A method of categorizing messages in which Gmail keeps track of individual "discussions" - the original message with a thread of replies to it ( maximum number letters in the chain - 100). Chains are created automatically, but cannot be created manually.
  • Built-in chat. Messages can be delivered not only using mail protocols, but also through the Jabber protocol, thanks to which users can exchange instant messages using the mailbox web interface, Google Talk, or any other that supports Jabber. In addition, Gmail chat allows for voice and video communication.
  • RSS support. Thanks to it, you can read letters using other RSS clients, for example, from personalized pages of search sites msn.com, yahoo.com and google.com itself, Microsoft programs Deskbar. This makes it possible to check email without connecting to the web interface.
  • 10 gigabytes disk space for letters. However, the size of one received or sent letter cannot exceed 25 megabytes.
  • Using a secure connection. Unlike many free and even some paid email services, Gmail offers an encrypted connection using the SMTP / POP3 / IMAP protocols, as well as a web interface via an encrypted connection using the HTTPS protocol (TLS v1.1/1.2 and TLS v1. 0 128 bit ARC4 (1024 bit RSA/SHA)).
  • No recording of IP addresses in the attached headers of the letter. In most other free email services, the sender's IP address is recorded (headers Received from, X-Originating-IP). This is only true for Gmail - in Google-apps the X-Originating-IP header is present.
  • Viewing your account access log, indicating IP addresses, access protocol (browser, mobile device, POP3, etc.) and time, as well as information about whether they are working somewhere else under this account. If the user for some reason forgot to log out of the corresponding account, for example, at work, using the Gmail interface he can end this session.
  • HTML only option allows you to significantly reduce the amount of downloaded information, thereby providing fast access to the web interface even with narrowband Internet access. In turn, due to the large amount of information transmitted by the standard web interface, right while it is loading, you can switch to the “HTML only” mode and enable its loading automatically.
  • Almost complete absence of advertising significantly reduces the amount of information required to download (compared to services containing graphic and flash advertising). Advertising links are completely absent in the “HTML only” mode, and are present only when reading large emails like contextual advertising as text in the right panel.
  • Mail on your own domain. The ability to use your own domain name when working with the Gmail service, and create a large number of mailboxes in it, each of which can use all the advantages of Gmail. However, for domains not registered with the help of Google partners, you will need special setting domain records. Given the opportunity is part of a service provided by Google - Google Apps.
  • Work offline. Allows you to use your mailbox even when you are not connected to the Internet. Offline access to Gmail is enabled by Google Gears technology, which stores the application on the user's hard drive. In offline mode, users can read incoming messages, as well as write letters that will be automatically sent immediately after the Internet connection is restored.

Gmail Lab is a set of additional (experimental) features, including:

Enjoy using Gmail!

Hello! Today I would like to talk about Gmail email service(email from Google). Surely, you are already familiar with him; I personally met him relatively recently, about 4 months ago. Before that, I used Mail.ru, but after switching to Gmail, I realized that the latter is truly the best in the world. Why? I'll tell you more about this below.

What made me switch to another email service? This is beautiful, that is, now my mail looks like this: petr@site. Not bad, right? Yes, of course, this can be done in Yandex, but for some reason I settled on Gmail and I don’t regret it at all. Register for Gmail.com will not be difficult, but I still recommend that instead of the usual registration, you immediately make a beautiful mail with your own domain name(I told you how to do this).

How I use Gmail email

1. I empty my inbox.

In the “Inbox” folder I only have relevant letters that require some action: reply, follow up on some actions, etc. When a certain letter becomes irrelevant, I just I'm sending it to the archives. What is an archive? These are emails that are not visible in your inbox but are searchable. Here is the “Archive” button:

Also, letters that are sent to the “Archive” are available through the “All Mail” folder. This way, my inbox is always clean. If you are sure that you will definitely never need a particular letter, then instead of “Archive” you can safely click on the “Delete” button.

2. I mark important emails.

Some letters require an urgent response or are extremely important to me. And while I’m sorting out my mail, the first thing I do is go to the “Tagged” folder:

Marking a letter is very simple: just click on the “star” in the upper right corner:

If one star is not enough for you, you can use a bunch of marks. To enable them, you need to go to Settings -> General -> Stars:

3. I use “Shortcuts”.

For example, at the moment it is taking place and it is very convenient for me to collect letters from each participant in a separate folder. What did I do for this?

  1. I opened a letter from a marathon participant and clicked on the arrow in the upper right corner:
  2. From the list I selected “Filter similar emails”:
  3. In the “From” field, I entered the email address of the marathon participant and clicked on the “Create a filter according to this request” button:
  4. In the “Apply shortcut” line, click on the “Select a shortcut...” button:
  5. Already there I clicked on the “Create shortcut” button:
  6. I gave the shortcut a name (in my case, I wrote the website address of this participant) and clicked on the “Create” button:
  7. That's all! The shortcut has been created, now all letters from [email protected] will automatically go to the pupkin.ru folder:

This way you can filter letters by mailbox, subject, etc.

Assign a specific color to each label, thereby increasing visibility significantly:

4. I mark automated emails as read.

Letters often come from exchanges such as Rotapost and others. I need them, but I don't like them to be “unread emails.” For such letters from exchanges, I also create filters, just in step 4 of the previous paragraph (see above), I check the box next to “Mark as read” (I do not create labels for these letters):

6. I actively use search.

Do you need to collect all correspondence with a specific recipient? No problem! This is very easy to do in Gmail. Just enter the mailbox address of the person you need and voila! , all the letters from him are before your eyes:

It really helps when the person you are corresponding with does not use the message history in their email. Then they wonder why I don’t answer their letters? And sometimes I don’t even remember what I talked about with this person. Honestly, the search is very useful. I also search for all sorts of keywords and actually find the letters I need.

Also, what’s great about Gmail is that all emails that are replies are collected in email chains(saving space in the list of letters and making it easier to track history).

7. It is very convenient to use Gmail email through your mobile phone.

You can easily find an application for almost any phone here http://gmail.com/app. Or you can use the browser version of the Gmail website, which is still very convenient (mail is “narrowed” to fit the screen size). There are also a lot of applications produced by third-party developers. For example, on my beloved iPhone I use the Sparrow app, which is really very convenient. On the iPad, I use mail in the browser, everything works great.
