Hello!

Almost every computer user has at least once grabbed his head and regretted that he deleted a necessary file or document from the disk (or, for example, accidentally formatted the media through his actions). But in many cases, it is possible to partially or even completely restore information - the main thing is to do everything correctly, so to speak, without fuss and haste!

To recover data needed special utilities and programs. There are a lot of them now, and most of them are quite expensive (and, having paid for the software, it is unknown whether it will justify itself, whether it will be able to help restore data).

That's why, in this article I will give the best free programs that will help scan your disk and find files that can be recovered (even after deleting them from the recycle bin or formatting the disk).

👉 For reference: you probably noticed that copying a file takes a long time - and deleting it takes a couple of seconds! The fact is that after you delete a file and empty the trash, it does not physically disappear anywhere from the disk.

The file system simply excludes certain areas of the disk - it believes that there is no longer a deleted file on them, they are free, and any other information can be written to them.

Therefore, the less you work with the disk after deleting a file, the higher the likelihood of recovering information from it (since the likelihood that something will be written to the same areas of the disk is minimal!).

👉 A couple of important rules:

  1. As soon as you notice the file is missing, try not to use this disk/flash drive. It’s better to disconnect it from the PC altogether (especially not to agree to format it, fix errors, etc., which Windows recommends).
  2. do not restore data to the same media you scanned: i.e. if you are trying to recover photos from a flash drive, restore them to disk! The fact is that copying new information to the media from which you are restoring files can erase the remnants of the information that you are restoring (I wrote it chaotically, but I think the meaning is clear 👌).
  3. If one of the programs couldn’t find and restore anything, don’t despair, try another (or better yet, 3-4)!

Nowadays on the Internet it is easy to find suitable software for a wide variety of purposes. Therefore, it is not surprising that in recent years many special applications and utilities have been created that allow you to quickly recover accidentally deleted files. Often, the operating algorithm of this software is always different, so the level of success in returning objects also varies. Sometimes the user has to use several tools at once in order to successfully recover the data he needs. In today's article we want to demonstrate the most common and effective means for completing the task.

I would like to start with the most famous thematic software called Recuva. You may know the developers this application By . The main functionality of Recuva is precisely aimed at restoring accidentally deleted files. After launch, you are greeted by the Configuration Wizard, where you need to specify the type of objects that will be found. Next, the search location is determined. The location can be a specific folder or logical volume of the hard drive. The program will independently scan the selected location and display all the files found. All you have to do is determine which of them should be restored, and then place them in a convenient directory on removable or local media.

Recuva is still actively supported by developers and is distributed free of charge on the official website. If you want to purchase a complete set of software from this company, we recommend that you pay attention to the PRO version subscription. Read more about all this on the product page by clicking on the link below.

DMDE

DMDE (DM Disk Editor and Data Recovery Software) deserves special attention in our article today, since the developers have introduced a truly unique scanning algorithm into this software, which is effective even in situations where other tools do not bring any results. Its essence of work is to reconstruct the directory structure even after complex damage to the file system. This is possible thanks to heuristic algorithms. Heuristic algorithms are those whose correctness and effectiveness have not been proven, but in most cases they turn out to work.

DM Disk Editor and Data Recovery Software supports almost all known file systems and will help in recovering objects even in cases where using the file system structure is not possible. The free version of DMDE includes many useful functions- disk editor, partition manager, image creation and disk cloning, reconstruction RAID arrays, return files from the current panel. All this will help in a variety of situations, and we, in turn, can recommend DMDE as one of best solutions to complete the task.

TestDisk

Freely redistributable TestDisk utility primarily designed to recover the bootloader and find lost partitions. It does not require installation and is launched from the console or executable file. Additional functions include restoring the MBR by overwriting, searching for a file system for further adjustment of the bootloader, and performing a wide variety of actions with all popular file systems. Of course, TestDisk allows you to easily restore files, but the algorithm of the software is quite specific, so 100% success is never guaranteed.

The software in question is intended exclusively for experienced users who at least roughly understand the structure of the hard drive and understand the concepts of file systems and boot sectors. In addition, TestDisk will help you fix errors if they are discovered. The developers have created a special section on their website where they demonstrate the principles of interaction with this utility. Therefore, if you have not yet encountered working in such software, first read the training materials.

R.Saver

R.Saver is one of the most popular programs for standard recovery of deleted files, which allows even the most novice users to quickly understand the functionality and recover long-lost files. The principle of operation of this software is quite simple - you select the place where the necessary files were once located, or scan the entire physical disk, and then run the analysis. After this, a list of all found directories and files will be displayed on the screen. Most of them will obviously exist, so you will have to find the required objects among them in order to restore them and save them in the required place.

We are also glad that the Russian language is available, which will make the software management procedure even easier for beginners. There are practically no additional functions in R.Saver. This includes only file system testing, during which the number of intact and damaged elements is shown. The program is distributed free of charge, so there will be no problems with downloading either.

GetDataBack

The next tool is called GetDataBack and stands out among other similar software due to its unusual interface. In essence, this solution is practically no different from those presented above, but here more attention is focused on the initial settings before scanning. You can select the file system in which the search will take place, set the range of files by size and last edited date. Based on all this, GetDataBack will display on the screen only objects and directories that match the parameters.

This scanning method will allow you to quickly weed out unnecessary elements and concentrate on one thing. In addition, in some cases it is possible to fix the file system and damaged elements, since not everything depends on the algorithm of the software. It’s definitely worth paying attention to GetDataBack, because it is distributed free of charge and copes with its main task perfectly.

Ontrack EasyRecovery

If you have set yourself the goal of recovering files from a disk, flash drive, player or, for example, a RAID system, Ontrack EasyRecovery is ideal for this. Interaction with it is extremely simple and begins with selecting an existing device. Based on this, the software will automatically decide on the selection of a scanning algorithm. Otherwise, Ontrack EasyRecovery works exactly the same as previous programs - you need to wait for the scanning to complete, and then restore the found files to any convenient location.

Recover My Files

The name of the software, Recover My Files, already speaks for itself. Here you will have the opportunity to set a filter and select one of the scanning modes: either quick (superficial) or thorough (deep). There is a separate menu in which filtering is configured (file size, modification date, type and file system). All this will help optimize the scanning and recovery procedure as much as possible.

Recover My Files is distributed for a fee, but the developers provide a free trial version with a limited period of validity so that novice users can get acquainted with all the benefits. The only negative that immediately catches your eye is the lack of Russian interface language. However, it is clear enough that even those who do not know English should not have any problems. You can still view and download Recover My Files from the official website.

PC Inspector File Recovery

PC Inspector File Recovery is another free software on our list today. The built-in functionality corresponds exactly to the tools already discussed earlier, and the only special feature that can be noted is a search by content among all detected files, which will allow you to quickly find the required components. Otherwise, this is standard software with deep scanning and the absence of a Russian interface language.

Comfy File Recovery

Now let's talk about software called Comfy File Recovery, which differs from all others in its ability to save and mount disk images. It is not known why such a function is needed in a standard file recovery tool, but it is present here and may even be useful to certain users. In addition, it is possible to save a text report on the analyzes performed in automatic or manual mode. This will allow you to always be aware of attempts and results of file recovery.

Auslogics File Recovery

Auslogics File Recovery is a program with one of the most convenient interfaces. Despite the lack of Russian language, even the most novice user will quickly understand all the tools and be able to start the scanning procedure. It consists of several stages - selecting a logical or physical partition, setting up search filtering, scanning and recovery. After finding files available for recovery, you can sort them in every possible way or set up a convenient display mode. After this, the necessary elements are selected and restored.

Auslogics File Recovery is distributed for a fee, and the user is only offered to familiarize himself with the trial version for a limited period of time. This will allow you to study the functionality of the software in detail and understand whether you will really use it on an ongoing basis and whether it is worth the money.

Disk Drill

A completely free program for recovering files from a hard drive and other media, which has a rich set of functions, but, unfortunately, lacks Russian language support. Among the main features, it is worth highlighting two types of scanning (fast and deep), saving and mounting disk images, saving the current session and activating information loss protection.

Hetman Photo Recovery

The last participant in our express review is a tool for recovering deleted photos. The program has an excellent interface, Russian language support, a rich set of settings, which includes creating and mounting disk images, creating a virtual disk, full or selective photo recovery, and much more. Distributed for a fee, but with the availability of free trial version, which is quite enough to restore photographs on disks.

As you can see, there is now quite a large amount of paid and free software on the Internet that will help you quickly recover lost files. It should be noted that they all work using different algorithms. From this we can conclude that it is recommended to use several tools at once in cases where one of them is not able to restore the necessary objects. Now you can choose suitable option from the proposed list in order to accomplish the task.

On the Internet, including on our portal, the topic has been raised more than once
file recovery. In fact, there is a whole class of universal and perfectly working programs, differing from each other only in the class of application - whether you need to restore worn-out correspondence via ASI or a polished power cable HDD. In this race, all participants reached the finish line - rest assured, each of these programs will cope with what they are supposed to cope with. I do not provide links and prices, because armed with Google (and I am not promoting Google) you will quickly discover both these very popular programs and medications for them. At the end, I will share with you my subjective impressions and comments for those who, one way or another, want to choose “the very best of the very best.”

Search and Recover

Let's start with the standard list of features inherent in most programs of this class: support for most file systems; search for lost files on any device equipped with a permanent
memory; working on portable media (you can run a program from a CD-DVD and go through the damaged hard drive); recovering files after emptying the recycle bin, from formatted disks, after Windows reinstallation, Instant message recovery in Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Netscape Mail, and QUALCOMM Eudora. Recover contacts, calendars, tasks, etc. in M.S.
Outlook. There is a preview function, with which you can view a worn-out file without restoring it (both in its natural form and, for special aesthetes, in hexadecimal encoding).

Search and Recover allows you to work in two modes: “master” and user. I note that in this context, “master” is the program settings under “ artificial intelligence", where, according to the idea, she should do everything for you. In the "master" mode, all the most necessary tools are easily accessible.
The “Custom” mode has a number of differences. You yourself specify the file types and their location, and specify the disk drives.
It is worth noting the usability interface of the program: different files are highlighted in different colors (that is, all text files, you can, for example, see by a given color). It is also possible to view all files that are in good, fair or poor condition.

As a bonus, I would like to note the function of completely erasing files (using the method of repeated overwriting) and the high, even very, speed of operation.

EasyRecovery

[All standard features]

Using EasyRecovery Professional, it is possible to recover more than 300 files of various types on disk, including MIDI music files, audio files, movies and much more that a modern user may encounter. Essentially, EasyRecovery consists of a DataRecovery data recovery module, a FileRecovery file recovery module, a disk diagnostic module, and a user trying to figure it all out.

The diagnostic part of the program provides: testing of disks and their partitions; detailed information about disk space usage; information about the positions of disk DIP switches (via the Internet); creating a diagnostic floppy that loads the Caldera version
DR-DOS.

Scanning a disk, especially a large one, unlike the previous participant in our race, requires a lot of time. Not surprisingly, it is possible to stop this process and remember its state in order to resume scanning later. Testing can be of varying depths and take different times, but a short test provides, according to the company itself, a diagnostic reliability of 90%. The program provides for reading parameters (thresholds) corresponding to SMART technology from the disk controller and warning about possible problems with it (only for modern drives).

Data recovery possible at different levels, up to serious damage to the file system. To summarize, we can conclude that a program with such rich functionality may be useful to those users who have severely mocked hard drive(pardon the pun) and were unable to recover the lost information using other, faster means.

DiskInternals Uneraser

[All standard features] +
[Recovery of compressed (under NTFS) and encrypted (under NTFS5) files, support for long names, recovery of partitions with subpartitions]

The authors of the program claim that they have a unique technology for recovering deleted FAT32 partitions in Windows 2000/XP along with their contents. Another difference between the program and other similar utilities is that when restoring files in operating systems It is not always possible to restore them completely in Windows 2000/XP and FAT32. Therefore, the program we are considering restores them in several versions, most suitable for their content, so that the user can then determine for himself which one is more suitable, and can choose from them by other means necessary information, if the file has not been completely restored. (But they didn’t want to restore the archived files. The program didn’t show them among the files in the deleted partitions.)
Specific features of the file NTFS systems not allowed for separate files determine the section in which they were previously located. Such files are placed in the common Lost files folder.

A special feature of the program is also the ability to save and then work with a disk image. The authors suggest creating such an image before you start restoring files (especially if the number of files being restored is large), and also to prevent the disk content from being destroyed due to incorrect user actions. It is recommended to create a disk image (file) on other logical drives or on network drives. After its creation, such an image can be connected to the program in the simplest way, and it can be worked with as with a real logical disk.

The program behaves very well in the case
file recovery from broken disks. Having detected an unreadable cluster, it will not try to extract information from it, but will write zeros instead and move on to the next cluster.

FinalData

[Short list of functionality]

Already a bit old ( official updates has not been there for more than a year), but it is still quite a convenient set of programs that can automatically find drives, even if the Boot Sector or file allocation table has been deleted or damaged, as well as restore files that are not referenced from the directory. Even after partitioning your hard drive and converting one file system to another, you can recover information and save it to network drives.

The function of monitoring and protecting files from accidental destruction looks very useful and necessary (unfortunately, this function was not available in the demo and I was not able to test it in practice).
FinalData will also help you recover information from damaged CDs, permanently delete unnecessary information, clean your donkey, cache and history, restore MS Office package files and mail messages etc. etc. etc. and h.z.ch.

Memory Stick Data Rescue Service

But this is no longer quite ordinary software. It allows you to recover photos and data files that were written to a Memory Stick and subsequently lost or deleted. File Rescue software is free and can be downloaded from the support site Sony buyers. Before downloading the file recovery software, the program will require the user to register the Memory Stick model name and its serial number. Simple and user-friendly MSFR is capable of recovering jpg (DCF format), MPEG1 and mp4 (MS Video file format) files and, in addition, is also capable of
recover most office files, including documents prepared using PowerPoint and Word. Once a Memory Stick is inserted into the slot, MSFR guides the user through seven simple steps that scan, repair, and rewrite files.

Memory Stick File Rescue is compatible with all types of cards Sony memory Memory Stick sold since 1998. The success of file recovery depends on the state of the data and whether any data was written “over” the file being recovered.

Dead Disk Doctor

[All standard features]

The program is distinguished by an original algorithm for searching and correcting errors on partially unreadable media. It allows you to minimize the loss of “live” data when trying to restore information in “dead” areas during block reading. The file is read in blocks of 10 KB, and when the device (CD-ROM, for example) generates an error, the block size is reduced by 10 times, the attempt is repeated, and so on until the data block is read without errors. If the block size reaches the minimum, the program skips one byte and starts reading from the next. After successful reading, the block size increases 10 times, etc., until it reaches a maximum of 10 KB.
Thanks to this non-standard solution, in many cases it is possible to recover even information that was not susceptible to other anti-deleteers.

GetDataBack

[All standard features]

A fairly powerful and interesting means of information recovery, worthy of participating in our race. Regardless of what happened to the information, whether it was deleted, whether there was physical damage to the hard drive or a crash of a running program, or even low-level formatting of the HDD, GetDataBack will most likely be able to return all the information written to the disk. GetDataBack allows data recovery both on the computer on which the program is installed and on a remote one, for example, on any of the computers local network; Another good feature is fast operation.

Finish

Search and Recover, in my opinion, has left everyone behind in terms of speed of scanning and recovering information, but in terms of capabilities and richness of functionality (I don’t know of files that the program could not recover), EasyRecovery has taken the lead. The rest of the programs turned out to be too specific and of them I would like to highlight Dead Disk Doctor, which can help in almost hopeless situations.

Accidentally deleting files from your computer is quite easy. But restoring them can be problematic. Especially if you don't know where to start. Below you will find a selection of programs for recovering deleted files for Windows. You can safely use any of them to recover lost data.

It is best to keep one of these programs installed on your computer so that, if necessary, you can simply launch and recover lost files without any problems. This is extremely important, since the success of the procedure depends on the number of file operations (disk writes) that occurred after the files were deleted.

06/20/2016, Anton Maksimov

There are a great variety of different programs on the Internet. Every day, users install and uninstall different programs. In some cases, due to a variety of reasons, a system failure occurs and some data can easily go missing. The most important data on our computers are documents, photos, audio and video archives. To prevent yourself from losing important data, it is highly recommended to create backup copies regularly. Well, if it happens that the data is lost and there is no backup copy, then Recuva comes to the rescue. This is a free program for easily recovering deleted files (whether due to a crash or mistakenly deleted by the user).

12/26/2014, Anton Maksimov

A lot has been said about creating backup copies, but situations are still different. Sometimes a disk may fail, or it may be accidentally formatted, forgetting to write off important data from it. As a result, restoration is urgently required. In this case, the Hetman Partition Recovery software package comes to the rescue.

According to the developers, this product will help recover data from hard drives, USB drives and even memory cards as a result of accidental deletion, formatting, deletion “bypass the Recycle Bin” via Shift + Del, blocking by a virus, system failure or damage to the media.

02/27/2012, Marcel Ilyasov

Undelete 360 is a file recovery program. Undelete 360 is completely free (for home use) and has a high-quality translation into Russian. To scan and recover data, unlike any other similar programs, the application uses a more efficient search algorithm, which can significantly reduce the time spent on preliminary scanning of hard drives. The application can work with flash media, memory cards, CD\DVD, ZIP, external HDDs etc.

02/10/2012, Marcel Ilyasov

Information is valuable, and losing such value is very, very unpleasant. And in some cases, information is so valuable that its cost can reach tens, hundreds and even millions of rubles/dollars. Hard disks, flash cards and memory cards that store our data allow us to achieve very high degree reliability of storage, but they also have failures. In addition to device failures, human absent-mindedness also leads to information loss - any user can easily “by inertia” delete important documents, and only then realize that he did something wrong. In any of the options there is a chance to recover information. If this is not a hardware failure, then you can try to perform the recovery yourself using specialized utilities. One of the tools for recovering files from media is EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard Free.
