Wi-Fi not working on your laptop? Then you've come to the right place.

There are quite a few reasons when a laptop cannot connect to a Wi-Fi network. This article will provide an algorithm for solving this problem, taking into account the frequency of possible causes.

Step 1: Diagnose the source of the problem

If connection to wireless network, the problem may not be in the client device (netbook, ultrabook, etc.), but in the router settings.

To do this, you need to try to connect to the wireless network using any other device equipped with a Wi-Fi module - another laptop, netbook, tablet, smartphone, etc.

If you were able to connect to the wireless network, the problem is with your computer. If the connection fails, the problem is in .

Step 2. Hardware enable the Wi-Fi module of the laptop

So, based on the diagnostics that we carried out in the previous step, it was determined that the connection problem occurred on one of the client devices of the wireless network.

As a rule, all laptops are equipped with operation indicator lights. wireless module and have a specific key combination to enable it.

Note! A glowing indicator indicates that the adapter is turned on. Lack of backlight indicates switched off Wi-Fi adapter e.

Most manufacturers place indicator lights on the front or one of the sides of the computer.

Less common is the location of indicators near the touchpad or on the monitor body.

On some HP models, a module status light may be built into the power button on the keyboard.

To enable Wi-Fi module a key combination is used, which consists of a special key Fn and one of the system keys from F1 to F12.

Look carefully at the system (function) keys and find the Wi-Fi connection icon on one of them.

On some older models, in particular from the company, you can find a solution for turning on the Wi-Fi module in the form of a two-position switch.

Such a switch is usually located on one of the sides of the laptop or on its front side.

Below is a list of keys that can be used to enable/disable the Wi-Fi module on the most popular brands of laptops.

Acer: Fn+F3

Asus: Fn+F2

Dell: Fn+F2

Fujitsu: Fn+F5

Gigabyte: Fn + F2

HP: Fn+F12

After the adapter is turned on in hardware, connect to the wireless network. If the connection fails, move on to the next step.

Step 3. Software enable the laptop's Wi-Fi module

In addition to hardware enablement wireless adapter, which we dealt with in the previous paragraph, there is also software activation, which is performed directly in the operating system installed on the laptop.

To turn on the adapter wireless connection in Windows 7, you need to do next steps: on the notification panel (near the clock) select the Internet connection status icon “Network and Sharing Center” shared access».

In the left column, select “Change adapter settings.”

In the list of connections, you need to pay attention to the indication of the “Wireless network connection” item. If the adapter is disabled, it will not be highlighted.

To turn it on, click on the icon right click mouse, select enable.

The icon color should change.

Now you need to pay attention to the notification panel area. In the first case, the laptop's Wi-Fi adapter is turned on, but there is no network to connect to (usually this is a problem with the router).

In the second option, the adapter is turned on and you need to find your network in the list of connections and connect.

After software enabling the adapter, we try to connect to . If the connection fails, move on to the next step.

Step 4. Installing/reinstalling drivers for the Wi-Fi module

To check whether the driver is installed, you need to right-click on the “My Computer” shortcut, which can be found either in the Start menu or on the Desktop, in context menu select “Properties”, in the left column of the window that opens, select the “Device Manager” menu.

In the window that opens, you need to find the “Network Adapters” menu and find the name of the wireless adapter, which contains part of the name “... Wireless Network Adapter” or “Wireless Network Adapter …”, where instead of “…” there should be the name of your wireless adapter, for example, Atheros , Realtek, Qualcomm.

In our case, this is Atheros Wireless Network Adapter. Right-click on it and select “Properties”. In the menu that opens, you need to make sure that “The device is working normally.”

Important! If you do not find the name in the “Network Adapters” menu, you need to install drivers. Drivers can be found on the disk that came with the laptop, or by searching the Internet.

Step 5. Fix connection problems in the router

In the first step of our article, we looked at how to high degree probabilities to determine possible reason, due to which it is impossible to establish a Wi-Fi connection.

Since there are quite a lot of routers, and even more firmware for them will be given in this paragraph general recommendations to fix the problem.

1. Try to reduce the distance between and the router. Try to ensure that there is direct visibility between the devices and as little interference as possible (walls, partitions, ceilings, microwave ovens, radiotelephone bases, etc.).

What to do if Wi-Fi does not work on your laptop

Why doesn't Wi-Fi work on my laptop? You can find out by running system diagnostics. You will learn how to do this in the video presented.

Hi all. Recently I encountered a problem that the wifi on the router disappeared. If you come close to the router, everything works fine. But if you go to another room, the speed drops significantly and wifi periodically disappears. Although a little earlier there were no such problems anywhere.

I increased the power of the router, increased its speed, made special settings on a smartphone and laptop. But this did not give any results. I had to look for the reason elsewhere and I found it. I also realized that many people have this problem and many do not know what to do if wifi disappears on the router. In this article I will tell you how to achieve a stable connection to a Wi-Fi network.

Identifying the problem is quite easy. For this we need a smartphone. I will take my Android smartphone simply because it will be easier for them to check everything. In this case, we will need a smartphone to see in different parts of the room where and how our network is working, and also to see what interference there is in the network.

The whole problem is that today everyone puts houses WI-FI router and because of this, the number of Wi-Fi networks is increasing. Accordingly, when networks are on the same channel, it creates a lot of wifi interference and because of this, your network begins to work poorly. All devices that are connected to this network must also listen to other networks on the same channel and only after that connect to their channel (router), and then send data.

How to use wifi analyzer

To identify clogged channels we will use Android smartphone. You will need to download a free wifi analyzer program on your smartphone. The free version will be quite enough. You can find the program in Play Market. It is necessary to install the program from the author M. Sid. She looks like this

After installation, launch the program and see what networks we have. Below I will show you how to use wifi analyzer. My example shows all the networks that my smartphone can see.

In this case, the networks are located on different channels. At the bottom there is a strip of channels and the channels go from one to fourteen. But I want to say right away that old routers only support the first 12 channels. And channels 13 and 14 support only the most modern devices who have support latest versions Wi-Fi protocol. Accordingly, to find best network, we need to look at those networks that are on this moment free and where there will be the least amount of interference. If you noticed, in the graph above the 3rd and 4th channels are free. In addition, there is also a ninth channel, on which there are no networks at all, but the problem is that work on this channel is impossible on most devices. Therefore, some factors need to be taken into account. For example, if you have a modern router, you can turn on any channel in it and use this channel to connect to your Internet. But there is another point. In addition to the fact that you can connect using the 2.4 GHz frequency, there is also a 5 GHz frequency. Let me switch to it now.

Please note, when switching to the 5 GHz frequency, other channel numbers have already gone. But, as you can see, there are much fewer networks that are used. I use a 5 GHz network because the least amount of other routers operate at this frequency. There are a total of six networks here at the 5 GHz frequency, including mine. That is, it turns out that at the 5 GHz frequency there are many more channels that are not occupied by anything. This means there is no interference. But there are small differences from 2.4 GHz. 2.4 GHz networks are better at penetrating walls and avoiding obstacles that may be in the signal path. 5 GHz can perform much better over long distances. In my case, I simply went into the router settings and enabled support for the 5 GHz line. This gave me the opportunity not to encounter other Wi-Fi networks.

Let me now show you what settings you need to make for the router. If you do not have support for a 5 GHz network in your router, then, naturally, you will need to use a 2.4 GHz network and simply select the channel that is free according to the graph.

Router settings for stable Wi-Fi operation

Open the browser and address bar enter one of the addresses 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 depending on the router model. The exact address must be written on the router itself. In my case, the router is Netgear and I am visiting the address 192.168.1.1. I'm going to the section Wi-Fi network and here there is certain settings, which allow me to configure the router to the frequencies that I need. Please note that my router supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

On my channel, the 2.4 GHz frequency is on channel 13. This is exactly the channel that is least loaded. You can also use channel 14 on the Netgear router. In my case, it is better to choose the 5 GHz frequency. At 5 GHz, automatic channel selection is selected.

General algorithm for setting up wifi

Thus, the general algorithm for setting up a stable Wi-Fi work such:

  1. Install wifi app Analyzer for smartphone
  2. Let's see which channels are free
  3. Let's go to Wi-Fi settings router network
  4. Select a free channel in the settings (or set the frequency to 5 GHz, if supported)
  5. Save the changes and reboot the router

Electronic gadgets: computers, laptops, smartphones and tablets are found in every home. To ensure that all devices receive unlimited access to the Internet, users install routers in their apartments. These devices provide wireless access to the network from a single exit point. But here people are faced with a situation where the Internet periodically disappears through the router. We'll tell you how to solve the problem yourself, without involving specialists.

wi fi can disappear on any device

Possible reasons

If the Internet speed fluctuates, check the router's access to the network. When access is stable, the indicators should glow a steady green light. When there is a problem on the line, the indicators flash. The network disappears due to interference or incorrect settings devices. You can solve the situation by rebooting the router; there is a button on the back panel for this.

WATCH THE VIDEO

If the Wi-Fi connection is lost, the following messages are displayed on the monitor screen:

  • No internet access. The problem is caused by an incorrect connection or a problem with the line. In this case, the Internet via cable connection and remote access disappears.
  • Obtaining an IP address. due to incorrect network settings. Check the setting in Network Sharing Center.
  • Lost connection. If it is constant, adjust the power setting. In particular, deactivate the shutdown network adapters in order to save energy.

If the signal is unstable and the speed leaves much to be desired, contact your provider’s technical support.

Important! The provider's responsibilities do not include setting up a home connection if this item is not specified in the connection agreement!

If there are no technical faults on the line, but the signal level is still low, perhaps the problem lies in the reception. If Wi-Fi on your phone is lost, move your gadget closer to the access point. The speed has increased, which means there is interference on the path between the device and the router. The way out would be to install an additional amplifying antenna. When the signal level does not depend on the distance between the device and the access point, you need to look for a free connection channel. This situation is typical for apartment buildings, where several routers operate at the same frequency. Let's look at how to solve this problem.

How to connect to a free frequency?

If Wi-Fi on the router has disappeared, then you need to install the InSSIDer program on your computer. The application will scan for available wireless networks and display free channels with a graphical image.

Please note that the utility costs money. Free version available only for mobile devices on the Android platform.

Let's understand how the utility works.

From the same graph it is clear that the fourth channel is free. To troubleshoot connection problems, you need to connect the router to a different frequency.

Please note that it is recommended to select a channel that is farthest away from other frequencies in use. It is worth considering that the frequency width varies between 20-40 MHz, and the channels are located 5 MHz from one another. Accordingly, the selected frequency will invariably overlap with neighboring ones. Right choice channel will fix the problem when the laptop loses the Wi-Fi network. It is worth noting that router models have from 11 to 13 channels available connection, so reconfiguring the device will not be difficult.

If the network on your phone disappears, this will help mobile app. This utility will not only determine the free frequency, but will also help check the quality of reception at various points in the apartment. The application issues graphic image wireless networks, allowing you to choose the optimal frequency. Thanks to this, you can correct the situation when Wi-Fi on your tablet or mobile device disappears.

Other options

You need to check the default settings of the router.

  1. The installed parameters must match the recommended ones. If there are discrepancies, the device does not work correctly. Some routers may not be able to handle the flow of information.
  2. Besides, budget models do not support dual-frequency operation. High speed and dual-stream connection overheat the router. The result is unstable operation and causeless connection breaks. In this case, the solution to the problem is to replace the router.

There are several options for getting out of the situation; using the tips provided, you can establish a stable wireless connection in your apartment.

Let's consider today the problem when the Wi-Fi network is unstable, and when the connection to the Wi-Fi network is periodically interrupted, or the Internet connection is lost. It seems to me that this is even worse than when the Internet does not work at all. Because the problem is not clear, everything seems to work, but not as it should, the signal disappears, devices turn off, and other incomprehensible moments. It’s just that when something doesn’t work, it’s at least clear where to look for a solution, but in such a situation nothing is clear at all.

What causes an unstable Wi-Fi connection:

  • Periodic disconnections of devices from the Wi-Fi network. Or the Internet simply breaks for a while (), and everything starts working again. A very popular problem that causes a lot of inconvenience. For example, a laptop is connected to a Wi-Fi network, and the Internet is working. But periodically a yellow one appears near the connection icon Exclamation point, and the Internet disappears. Loading files gets stuck, etc. And, as a rule, the connection is restored after a while.
  • Devices do not connect to the Wi-Fi network the first time, or do not see the Wi-Fi network.
  • The Wi-Fi network completely disappears and appears.
  • Very low internet speed over wireless network (everything is fine via cable).
  • When the Wi-Fi connection only works close to the router.
  • The wireless network signal level is constantly changing.

This, of course, is not the entire list of problems that are associated with unstable operation of wireless networks. There may be many more. Very often, Wi-Fi works fine for a while, and then problems begin and go away again. You may also notice the appearance of problems, for example in the evenings, or at other times of the day.

If you have something similar, and you seem to have an Internet connection, but you can’t always use it ( use without any problems), then now we will try to fix everything.

Changing the wireless network channel when Wi-Fi is unstable

This is the first and most important tip that you should definitely try. We know that every Wi-Fi network operates on some channel. If there are many of these networks, then they begin to interfere with each other, and interference appears. As a result, Wi-Fi is unstable. Well, and various incomprehensible problems that I wrote about above, and which you have most likely already encountered.

You need to change the Wi-Fi network channel in the router settings. Details about channels, about finding a free one and about changing to different models routers, I wrote in a separate instruction:

You can try setting some kind of static channel (if you have Auto), or vice versa, set Auto if a static channel was selected. In the article linked above, I wrote about finding the freest channel using inSSIDer programs. You can use it.

You just need to go to the router settings, go to the tab where you configure the wireless network, and in the Channel item change the channel. This is what it looks like on Tp-Link routers:

And on Asus routers:

After each channel change, do not forget save the settings and reboot the router. Be sure to try several options. It should help.

As for interference, household appliances can create it. Do not place the router near microwave ovens, cordless phones, etc.

The Internet is cut off via Wi-Fi: router firmware, and other tips

Almost always, such problems in the wireless network occur due to the router. Not rarely, this is due to the firmware. Therefore, I strongly recommend updating the firmware of your router. We have instructions on our website for all popular manufacturers. Here's an example:

It is also possible that the wireless network may be unstable due to some technical problems with router. Something with the board itself, or the power adapter. By the way, it is power adapters that very often cause such problems. The router simply does not receive the necessary power and there are connection breaks, etc. Well, strong changes in the power supply can affect the operation of the router. If the Internet goes out after you put some kind of load on the router (online videos, games, torrents, connecting new devices, etc.), then this is usually due to an inexpensive (not powerful) router.

Need to eliminate problems on the ISP side. It may well be that the connection is broken on its end, and the router has nothing to do with it. It’s very easy to check, just connect the Internet directly to your computer and check its operation.

For many people, the connection breaks down in those rooms where there is very bad signal Wi-Fi networks. When, for example, only one division of the network signal remains on the device.

In such a situation, you need to increase the range of your Wi-Fi network. We have an article on this topic:. Or, install . After this, problems with Internet interruptions should disappear.

And if your devices at home find a lot of available networks that operate at a frequency of 2.4 GHz (as is most likely your network), and changing the channel, and even changing the router does not produce results, and the Wi-Fi network is very unstable, then this problem can be solved by purchasing a router that supports operation at a frequency of 5 GHz. This frequency is practically free. I just know a case where there were a lot of wireless networks in the house, and Wi-Fi was simply impossible to use until they switched to the 5 GHz frequency.

If the Internet disappears on only one laptop

And of course, it’s not uncommon for all devices to connect and work with a wireless network without any problems or disconnections, but one device keeps disconnecting, losing connection, etc. It’s not hard to guess that most often this device is called a laptop and runs on Windows.

In such cases, it is imperative to update the wireless adapter driver. I wrote how to do this. It is possible that the problem may be in the hardware. And it appears very often after disassembling the laptop (cleaning dust). Why is that? During assembly, the antenna that is built into the laptop often suffers. These are the problems with working with Wi-Fi networks. Very often, after this the Internet only works near the router itself.

Update: changing Wi-Fi network properties

Open Network and Sharing Center and click on your Wi-Fi network. In the new window, click on the “Wireless Network Properties” button and check the box next to “Connect even if the network does not broadcast its name (SSID).” Click Ok.

If it doesn’t help, and Wi-Fi continues to fail, then in the same window, on the “Security” tab, you can click on the “Advanced settings” button and check the box next to “Enable compatibility mode for this network with the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) )".

You can restart your computer. Thanks to Alexander for this advice. He suggested it in the comments to this article.

Here are some tips, if you have interesting information on this topic, personal experience, then write in the comments. You can ask questions there, I will definitely answer!

I bought it D-Link router DIR-651, I configured everything according to the instructions and encountered a problem that when the computer and power are turned off, the router resets the DNS server settings.

Preface... For a solution to the problem with the router (router), see below ↓

It all started with the fact that I first connected the router via LAN to a desktop computer. I wrote down everything I needed, the router turned on and started working, the Internet appeared, and I was happy. Then I thought I should check the Wi-Fi.

I turned on the laptop and it found it on its own wireless connection to the router, connected everything, the Internet worked, and sites began to open. Well, I also decided to check the wireless Wi-Fi connection from my phone and tablet. And everything turned out to be fine there, the connection was successful, and the Internet appeared.

The next day, turn on the router, then a laptop, and ! Or rather, it says that the network is without access to the Internet. The wireless connection itself is there, Wi-Fi is working and the network is connected, but in the corner near the clock there is an icon that says “network without Internet access.”

At first I thought there were problems with the provider. I think as a copywriter, logically, you need to turn on your desktop computer and see if there is Internet there! I turned on the computer, which is connected via LAN to the local network - the Internet works.
