The modern mobile phone has long moved away from its original concept - just a communication function. And the name “mobile phone” is used less often; more and more often we can hear: camera phone, smartphone or simply gadget. And if the latter is just a new slang term, then the previous ones are qualitatively different from the original name. Now a mobile phone is called the simplest device, which includes the Internet, SMS, MMS, calls, Bluetooth (or infrared) and an organizer. But even such “simpletons”, or as the manufacturers call them, “state employees”, already have useful functions that are not directly related to communications. So, for example, NOKIA phone 1100, already had a flashlight in its functionality. And the SE J132 phone has an FM radio added to the “basic” configuration. Of course, standards are rising, as are norms. Modern state employees have a radio, a simple camera and a slot for memory cards. And this is already the norm for state employees.

So, it is proposed short review useful additional features and technologies that make a phone attractive to buy, and for some, a necessity. However, do not forget that the presence of each of the above devices or functions “on board” shortens the operating time of the phone. Although manufacturers are trying to increase the capacity of this part and apply new energy-saving technologies, the operating time of a mobile phone without additional “gains” is much higher than that of “cool” devices. Let's look at some additional functions, without which a modern telephone would not be the same.

First on the list is a flashlight. This useful device will never be superfluous. The phone's flashlight function itself developed quite interestingly. At the very beginning, people simply had an active screen as a flashlight. Later producers software for mobile phones, applications were released. The essence of the work, which was based on the same principles, with some nuances - the screen became automatically active and the application had White background. And only after these tricks did manufacturers begin to install a full-fledged flashlight in some models. As a rule, located frontally, it was activated from the phone menu or with a separate key. Still, this option was not particularly attractive to the developers, since they had to allocate space for this device and power consumption, and this contradicts the general trend in the development of phones. This fact is confirmed by the presence of such a device in budget phones. The logical solution was to use the camera flash as a flashlight. This solved everything previous problems, but also added headaches. Thus, manufacturers had to modernize the flash - increase the operating life, introduce multi-mode and complicate the design. In modern camera phones, the flash is either xenon or LED, complete with xenon.

Second on the list is FM radio. Music is one of the important areas in the development of phones. Manufacturers realized this almost immediately. It even spawned entire lines of models (Music Express and Walkmen). And if for a player the phone’s memory capacity is of great importance, which has led to the active development of memory cards and related technologies, then the sound quality and functionality are also applicable to the radio. Here development followed a logical path. From mono to stereo, from manual search each time a different station to auto-tuning channels, the appearance of information feeds (RRS) and information about the station, from receiving a radio signal to receiving TV. The only feature remains a built-in antenna or mandatory presence in the form of a headset.

Tritium in the list is a player. It, as mentioned above, is of great importance. The player itself, as such, is divided into audio and video, with various support formats and availability useful settings. The telephone audio player has evolved from WMR and MP3 formats with meager settings, to a full-fledged multi-format with a wide range of settings (both manual and preset). The telephone video player has the same development, only somewhat belatedly. If we talk about manufacturers, the company Sony Ericsson one of the first to introduce high-quality players into phones. Later, NOKIA began to catch up and today is catching up with SE in quality and fans. To be fair, we note that other companies also participated in the race for music lovers. However, these two manufacturers are the brightest on the market in this segment.

Fourth on the list is the camera. Having a camera on phones is a common occurrence. Initially, there was only a photo camera, it didn’t take long and the video camera was almost immediately added to the phone’s functionality. That is why their settings are similar. Technically, video quality is more difficult to improve. Therefore, while modern camera phones can be comparable to some digital cameras, they are still a long way from video cameras. Almost all manufacturers boast one or a number of high-quality camera phones. Here, development went towards an increase in the number of pixels of the matrix, the emergence of a wide selection of modes (panorama, FullHD, etc.) and settings (light tones - twilight, snow, ... and focusing modes, stabilization, etc.), the presence of magnification , autofocus, flash, as well as a number of design solutions. Such as the presence of separate function keys and camera shutter. We also note that the camera can be used to run games, applications and video communications.

Fifth on the list is the flash drive function. Initially, this function was quite rare in devices. LG was one of the first to introduce this innovation. The phone simply had more free memory, and when connecting it to a PC, it did not require drivers. Increasing the phone's own volume is a problematic issue. But still, the development of cameras and players in phones led to an increase in the occupied volume of one file. Some manufacturers have nevertheless made one or more models with built-in hard drive(by 2,4,8...GB), but then they had to either increase the weight and dimensions of the gadget, or increase the cost. The logical solution is memory cards. They have already been successfully used in other devices (cameras, cameras...) and their manufacturers had experience in this market segment. The memory card was cheaper for the phone manufacturer, and also became a pleasant bonus for the buyer. The number of memory card formats is large - 22 types, in modern mobile phones About five types are used. The most common among phone manufacturers is microSD. It is the most popular type.

Sixth on the list is the touch screen. The screen is the advantage of any phone. From one- and two-line monochrome to modern TFT and OLED - the path along which it developed this element. In a modern phone, the screen is not only a device that displays all information, but also a control element. The screens of new phones have become more resistant to scratches and impacts, do not fade in the sun and are larger in size. And if the quality characteristics directly affect the battery, then the dimensions affect the dimensions of the entire device. In order to reduce the size of the device, manufacturers reduced the dimensions to the size of the display. Thus, all control keys have become touch sensitive - part of the entire screen. There are also semi-touch screens, i.e. Some functions of the keys are taken over by the screen (in particular, multimedia). There are also screens that can be controlled only with a stylus (a special marker) and those that can be controlled with a finger (and a stylus).

Seventh on the list is a GPS navigator. This is a relatively recent phone feature that has migrated from standard GPS navigators. Using the Internet and the a-GPS profile, a mobile phone can receive information from navigation satellites and thus view and plot a route. To operate the navigator, you need maps and an Internet connection.

Now let's look at some of the relatively new technologies that control the features and applications of our phones.

An accelerometer is a sensor that measures the magnitude (or difference) of acceleration. He found himself in the function of managing the phone, games and applications. For example, orienting the information displayed on the phone (landscape or portrait), controlling the player, alarm clock, calls, games or counting steps.

A gyroscope is a sensor that determines the angle of deviation of the device from one of the three axes. Performs the same functions as an accelerometer. New features in games.

Multitouch is a nice addition to your phone's touch screen. Allows you to simultaneously control the device with several fingers. Mainly used for scaling pages and graphics.

Multiple (common) point (Multipoint) - technology of using a headset one Bluetooth channel to connect it with two devices. Convenient for those who have two mobile phones.

Active noise reduction is a technology again for Bluetooth headsets. Its essence is to use two microphones simultaneously. The first is inside and perceives speech and outside noise, the second is outside and only outside noise. After simple processing, extraneous noise disappears.

Geotagging - GPS coordinates are added to the photograph taken. It is inherent in almost all devices with GPS navigators and will be relevant for uploading your pictures to resources with world maps (for example, Yandex.Photos) and for users of blogs and social networks.

Digital compass is a technology that uses GPS or a gyroscope to obtain the direction of the cardinal directions. It is good to use where a simple GPS navigator is not suitable (for example, in the forest).

FM transmitter is a technology based on an FM transmitter. An add-on that allows you to broadcast (or rebroadcast) any music or sounds to other devices with FM receivers.

The proximity sensor is a fairly rare technology. Sensors determine the distance from the phone to the object, analyze it and issue a given command. For example - blocking touch screen during a conversation from accidental pressing.

The article does not display all the functions of a modern phone, but only functions not directly related to communication.

Mobile phones are becoming more familiar and utilitarian, but the wild imagination of designers continues unabated. Mobile phones - so similar, and so different

Today, the mobile phone market has already reached the stage of saturation, at which manufacturing companies are forced to go to great lengths to attract the attention of users. One of the consequences of this is the increasing variety of models on the market - both in technical capabilities and in design and appearance. The various form factors of mobile phones will be discussed in this material.

The evolution of mobile phones continues. Not only can they quite notice desktop computers, gadgets will soon replace our televisions, cinemas, medical devices, household appliances and even a car. But wait! Why do we need all this jumble in one device? Of course, I understand... technology, innovation, modernization, but why do most of us need a compass, navigator or professional camera in a mobile phone? I asked myself this question while traveling around Europe this summer.

Sitting in a small cafe on the Italian Riviera and sipping a glass of red wine, I saw several young people arguing about who had “bigger and cooler”. I became interested in the guys. It was interesting what they were measuring against. Probably cars or girls, I thought, but I was wrong. In reality, they almost came to blows to prove who had the more functional smartphone: Apple iPhone 4S or Samsung Galaxy SIII. The guys are 20-25 years old, and they’re talking about this! Just like the children in Russia told their mother. I thought...

Why do modern mobile phones need numerous programs, functions, and services? Is it really possible that some kind of Foursquare or antivirus or Instagram can replace communication, simple human communication for people? Oh my god!

I am an Apple phone user myself! At the same time, I don’t use even half of the functions that it has. But why?

The answer to this question is simple. Big companies just brand us with all sorts of trinkets and pseudo necessary functions and services. Having returned to Russia, I conducted a survey among my friends, colleagues and simply close people about what functions in their phone they have never used and which they do not even know exist. The results were no better than mine. 60-65% of functions, programs and services are not used by people.

Let's look at the ten most unnecessary and downright useless features in modern mobile phones.

MMS

id="sub0">

I want to start my review of the most unnecessary functions on the phone with MMS. Who has used them at least once in their life? I don’t even remember ever sending or receiving messages with attached pictures or audio files. MMS finally died with the advent of unlimited mobile Internet. Now multimedia messages are a true anachronism.

WAP

id="sub1">

Another unnecessary feature is the Internet protocol WAP. At the dawn of the mobile Internet, it was in great demand because it allowed access to mobile versions sites. This was very relevant 5-10 years ago, when Internet speeds reached a maximum of 20 Kbps. It's a thing of the past now. However, some operators for a long time specially used separate Internet tariffs for WAP. As I remember now, regular Internet a year ago cost 7 rubles per MB, and WAP - 50 rubles per MB. True, now this scam has already been covered up. Uniform prices introduced .

Dictaphone

id="sub2">

The situation is similar with a voice recorder. 95% of mobile phone users do not use it, although the function is available even in phones costing 700 rubles. But for me personally, a voice recorder is a working tool. Here I am the exception to the rule.

PTT

id="sub3">

Many of us read this abbreviation as “er te te”. This already says a lot. In fact, this is “push to talk”! In the West and Europe, this function is in great demand. This is a mobile walkie-talkie with which you can communicate with a subscriber on another phone. In the CIS countries, the service turned out to be completely pointless, since most operators do not support it. Moreover, in Russia mobile connection many times cheaper than in Europe.

Flashlight

id="sub4">

Some will say that the flashlight ended up in this group by mistake or by accident. However, the uselessness of such a function lies in the fact that when the flashlight is turned on, the mobile phone battery drains much faster, which will not allow, say, to take a long walk through the forest in the dark. Also, each phone has a screen, and its brightness allows it to be used as a flashlight. But you can find a use for this function - illuminating something, for example, a lock in a dark corridor or a switch in a dark room, becomes easier with the use of a flashlight.

Camera

id="sub5">

The need and uselessness of cameras in modern phones became the talk of the town. This is a very ambiguous function, but it all depends on the quality of execution. In most cases than better phone, those better camera, and vice versa. If the camera takes excellent pictures, then the device is expensive. Cheap phones always have mediocre cameras, and they can be considered unnecessary, since the quality of the resulting images cannot be compared to even the most budget digital cameras. It is difficult to distinguish faces on them. The color rendition does not stand up to criticism; printing such photographs is out of the question. But phones costing 20,000 rubles or more already use better cameras.

Photos obtained with their help are no longer embarrassing to show to friends; they can be printed. The pictures are approximately at the budget level digital cameras entry level. There are even exceptions in the form of devices with a 41 megapixel camera like this one. However, having even the most mediocre camera in your phone is already a plus, because you never know when you will need to take a photo of something, and you always have a digital camera in your pocket. So the uselessness of this function is determined only by the personal requests and needs of a particular buyer.

Built-in photo and video editing programs

id="sub6">

Regarding the topic of photography and video shooting, I cannot keep silent about multimedia content editing programs. Very often they are already installed on the device by the manufacturer. At the same time, even if you use them, they look so miserable and uncomfortable that you will lose any desire to work with them. IN Lately V Google Play, App Store, The Marketplace has tons of very entertaining programs available, a la Instagram. This is another matter!

Email

id="sub7">

Some people manage to use mobile mail on their devices. Of course, I can understand those who have a Blackberry or Nokia with a QWERTY keyboard, but on other devices, mail is extremely inconvenient and non-functional. According to our surveys and research by email Only 3% of phone owners and 19% of smartphone owners use it. Here's another function that you don't understand why it exists.

Antiviruses for mobile phones

id="sub8">

Communicating with colleagues and telecom experts, we came to the consensus that antiviruses in mobile phones are a far-fetched thing. For the most part, this is marketing by antivirus companies in order to develop mobile market. The fact is that it has become very difficult to promote products only to computers - whoever wanted it had already bought protection. Mobile phones and their owners are a real treasure trove. We need to really scare them! Of course I have individual cases with Trojans, when mobile antivirus programs can help, but if you have a good head on your shoulders, you definitely won’t fall victim to phone viruses.

NFC

id="sub9">

This animal is generally very rare in Russia, although the number of phones supporting this function has begun to grow rapidly. Some vendors are positioning the technology as a means for contactless payments from a mobile phone, while others present it as an alternative to Bluetooth for exchanging files between phones. In both cases, the idea looks extremely weak, which is why NFC remains unnecessary for the mass user.

As you can see, modern mobile phones often have functions we don’t need or features that we don’t use. Manufacturers do not want to get rid of them, since such functions at first glance expand the functionality of the phone, making it more attractive to the buyer. This situation is both beneficial for the manufacturer and harmful to the buyer, making it difficult for him to choose, because the average buyer will only be happy to see a lot of things in the phone. But their real benefits will become clear only during the operation of the device. On my own behalf, I can wish everyone to always weigh their desires and needs and not chase after a bright wrapper.

Useful tips

Today, smartphones and other gadgets have become an integral part of our lives. With their help, we communicate with loved ones, watch movies, listen to music, and play games. And it seems that we have studied our smartphone inside and out.
