A classic mouse today has at least two function keys and a scroll wheel. Moreover, in addition to scrolling up and down, the latter also has a click function, which is why it is also called the middle (or third) mouse key. But this is only the minimum...
There are mice with several dozen keys and a couple of scroll wheels, as well as even more exotic controls, such as various verniers (second meaning).
Gamers and people involved in video editing like to use such mice because they additional keys You can assign various commands that make it quicker and easier to perform various actions that would normally require you to use the keyboard.
Such mice usually come with special software included, which allows you to customize all the mouse buttons at your discretion. However, there is also software that can add functionality to simple mice that everyone has!
About the theory and practice of remap
Remap or remapping (from the English “remapping” - reassignment) is the process of replacing one specific system parameter with another. In our case, we will talk about remapping in the context of reassigning mouse keys (although you can remap, for example, a keyboard, HDD or monitor (if there are dead pixels)).
It all started with what I was given for my birthday wireless mouse Pleomax MOC-315B. Unlike the usual one, which I used before, my new product had two additional buttons on the sides of the usual left and right keys.
Upon testing, it turned out that these keys perform the “Back” and “Forward” functions in the browser, and are also suitable for switching tracks in a music player playlist. This was already something, but in practice I only used the “Back” function. So the idea arose to use buttons in a more rational way through remapping.
The mouse came with a disk with a standard program for monitoring the battery charge status and (oh, happiness! :)) the ability to change the functions of the buttons. However, when checked, it turned out that it was not a remap that was proposed, but simply a “suspended” call to the executable file of any program when pressed.
But I wanted more :) The plan was to implement keyboard shortcuts for copying and pasting text using these buttons. And the end result of my search was a British program for intercepting “mouse” events X-Mouse Button Control.
Comparison with a paid analogue
The owners of five-button mice will get the maximum benefit from X-Mouse Button Control (although on regular mice we often don’t use, for example, the wheel click, which can also be used for your own purposes), which, in addition to traditional keys and a wheel, have two more functional buttons. The Key Remapper program also offers us similar functionality:
As can be seen from the comparison, X-Mouse Button Control cannot remap the keyboard, but it has more options for reassigning mouse keys than any other program. In addition, this is practically the only application that will work equally well both in 32-bit Windows XP and, for example, 64-bit Windows 8.1!
Program installation
Installation of X-Mouse Button Control occurs in the traditional way - using the installer, which can be downloaded in an archive from our website. Launch the installer and accept license agreement by clicking “I Agree”:
Here we are offered the opportunity to choose where to save the program configuration file. By default it is placed in your user profile folder, but for portability you can specify the folder in which all X-Mouse Button Control executable files are stored. To do this, simply indicate it in the specially designated field.
The “Delete (reset) any existing X-Mouse Button Control settings” checkbox is used to forcefully delete all existing settings (if the program was previously installed and you are updating it).
After this, the installation process will complete as usual and will not require any special intervention.
Launch and Russification of the program
After installation, X-Mouse Button Control will launch as a tray icon:

- The first section contains only one item - “Layers”. If we hover over this item, we will see a pop-up window with a list of five layers. They are needed so that you can configure additional actions for the same mouse keys. Since we have five layers, it turns out that up to five actions can be assigned to each mouse button! Active in this moment The layer is marked with a checkmark and in this menu you can quickly switch layers by clicking on them.
- In the second section we have four functions:
- “Settings” - opens the program settings window, which will be discussed below;
- “Hide icon” - hides the X-Mouse Button Control icon in the tray (I don’t recommend doing this so as not to search for the program later :));
- "Open LOG file» - opens the program event log, which can be useful when analyzing problems if any arise;
- “Disable X-Mouse Button Control” - allows you to temporarily disable mouse event interception while keeping the program running.
- The third section has two points. The first allows you to remember the current location of icons on the desktop, and the second allows you to restore this location at any time.
- The last section contains the “Exit” item, which allows you to close the program completely.
Mouse button settings in X-Mouse Button Control
The main window of the X-Mouse Button Control is “Settings”, so let’s go to them by clicking the corresponding item in the menu:
If you look at it globally, the settings window is divided into two sections: on the left there is a list of profiles (essentially, sets of settings), and on the right there are tabs for managing action emulation layers for all mouse keys.
By default, only one profile (“Default”) is created on the left side, for which in the right section you can configure up to five layers of emulation and parameters for processing mouse events.
The parameters of this profile apply to the entire system, but you can create additional profiles for anyone installed application by clicking the “Add” button below and specifying the required program in which you need to change the functionality of additional mouse buttons.
Setting up the layer is very easy. First, give it a name in the “Layer Name” field (to make it easier to find and switch to this layer in the list). Then we can begin to bind certain actions to the desired keys.
We press the mouse button that we want to remap and, if it is supported by the program, it will be highlighted yellow in the list of layer buttons. Open the drop-down list of the highlighted key and indicate the required action (in the screenshot above you can see that I have reconfigured the copy and paste actions for additional keys).
There are quite a lot of functions on the list, but they can all be divided into several groups:
- emulation of pressing one keyboard key (for example, Enter or Escape);
- emulation of pressing system keyboard shortcuts (CTRL+C, CTRL+V, etc.);
- emulation of various system actions (working with volume, calling a screensaver, turning off the PC, etc.);
- browser functions (go to bookmarks, refresh page, etc.);
- mouse clicks and scroll wheel operation;
- opening utility tools (control panel, network or any other folder);
- internal functions of the program (switching layers, activating modifier keys, etc.);
- emulation of manually specified complex keyboard shortcuts (item “Simulated keys (undefined)”).
If you do not find the function you need in the list (or it does not work correctly), then you can set the emulation of your own specified actions using the “Simulated keys (undefined)” item:
In the window that opens, we will have the opportunity to enter codes in a special field the necessary buttons or functions, as well as configure the pressing parameters at which the specified action will occur.
For some click parameters, you can also set a delay before simulating a second click. The rest of the space below is used to display quick help for key and function tags, as well as internal teams programs that we can use to create simple scripts.
When the buttons of the selected layer are set, all we have to do is click the “Apply” button and the specified action interception parameters will be activated.
Additional settings
In principle, the steps described above are quite sufficient for the program to work effectively, however, X-Mouse Button Control has a number of additional options. The first one is the Scrolling and Navigation tab (last in the list of layers):

There are no particularly useful functions here, but I advise you to pay attention to the possibility of enabling page-by-page scrolling (to quickly jump to the desired page in a multi-page document, for example) or, conversely, adjusting the number of scroll lines (for more precise or coarse positioning).
As with layers, the settings you specify will be activated immediately after you click the “Apply” button.
However, the tab described above is not all the program options. All others are hidden under the “Settings” button in the lower left corner:
Here all parameters are divided into four tabs. The first two contain a variety of additional options related to work and appearance(for example, interface language) of the program itself.
I wanted to pay special attention to the last two. These are the “Hot Keys” and “Modifier Keys” tabs. On both tabs we can set keyboard shortcuts that will allow you to quickly activate one or another X-Mouse Button Control function.
The only difference is that hot keys are used to switch the operating mode of the program, and modifier keys change the mode only for the time they are held down, and when released, the standard functionality specified in the profile returns.
I advise you to activate hotkeys for selecting a simulation layer if you plan to use three or more layers. If you are not going to activate more than two layers, then you are better off using modifier keys.
The last one is interesting and for many useful feature hidden in the "General" tab. This is a function for scrolling the window over which the cursor is currently located (it is activated by the first checkbox).
In conjunction with this function, you can also include the second checkbox “Activate window when scrolling”. It will allow you to quickly switch focus to the window that is currently scrolling.
Advantages and disadvantages of the program
- works on all systems;
- large selection of preinstalled functions;

- setting up to five functions for each mouse key;
- creating emulation profiles for any application.

conclusions
I worked with X-Mouse Button Control on both Windows XP and latest version"Eight" (64 bit), so I can safely recommend this program, as the most versatile mouse key remapper!
The main advantage of this program is that it allows you to work with several layers of emulation, which gives us the opportunity to expand the functionality of not only five-key mice (with two additional buttons), but also standard ones!
The only significant drawback I encountered was the not entirely correct operation of mouse wheel tilt recognition. In Windows XP, this function did not work at all, but in the “Eight” it was activated, but when tilted, the selected action is performed twice. I wrote to the developer about this bug and, hopefully, it will be fixed soon :).
It was also noticed that in Windows 8.1 in the latest official release (XMBC v. 2.6.2) the emulation of side keys on some layers sometimes disappears:(. If you also encounter this problem, then I advise you to update to the beta version 2.7.3 (I added it to the archive just in case), in which this bug has already been fixed.
