As usual, Sony has installed a lot of different software. Here you have the well-known branded client of popular social networks Timescape, and the Track ID music recognizer, and file manager Astro, and the OfficeSuite office suite, and a barcode scanner, and Evernote, even the Walkman player found a place.

And, of course, Sony Xperia ion boasts excellent virtual keyboard with everyone possible ways text input. You can choose from several layout options, and some will like to enter words without lifting their finger from the keyboard - Swype works surprisingly correctly, and with some skill you can learn to write very quickly.

Performance, battery life

Sony Xperia ion is built on the Qualcomm MSM8260 chipset - the Japanese are still wary of quad-core processors, so for now even flagship Sony models limited to two computing cores. The hardware platform is completely identical to what could be seen in the Xperia S, so the Xperia ion did not present any surprises.

The results in synthetic tests are at the expected average level, just like most other dual-core platforms. Smartphone performance is enough for everyone daily tasks, but there is no escape from the menu that slows down from time to time. In Quadrant, Sony Xperia ion scored 3183 points, and in AnTuTu - 8531.

The smartphone has a storage capacity of only 16 GB, which is half that of the Xperia S. But, unlike its predecessor, the Xperia ion boasts a slot for memory cards, while the previous flagship was content with only built-in storage. In our opinion, this is a big plus.

The battery is non-removable, as you already know, but there are no difficulties in this regard. The battery capacity is quite large - 1900 mAh, but there is nothing outstanding about it. The same Samsung Galaxy SIII, for example, could boast a 2100 mAh battery.

Nothing extraordinary in terms of time battery life Xperia ion did not show. One battery charge lasts from morning until late evening. At the same time, all the functions of the smartphone can be used in a very intensive mode. If you just call, write SMS and check your mail from time to time (disabling push mode), you can get one and a half to two days of work. True, if you really intend to use the device in this mode, you should rather look at something simpler. A fancy Android smartphone like the Xperia ion will be completely useless.

Competitors

Samsung Galaxy S III

Samsung's current flagship model this moment can be considered as a competitor to any other top-end device. If we compare directly with the Sony Xperia ion, then we must admit that the Korean smartphone has more powerful hardware and a camera of comparable quality, albeit with a lower sensor resolution.

World debut Sony smartphone Xperia ion took place at the beginning of the year and only a week ago it reached Ukraine. New Xperia is a work on the mistakes made during the release of the Sony Xperia S. Does this mean that the Xperia ion now becomes the owner of the flagship title? Yes, although Sony convinces us that the Xperia S is still the flagship, we understand that this is not so. Therefore, we will treat the evaluation of the top model with the utmost rigor.

The dimensions of the device are comparable to Samsung flagships, LG, HTC. To understand how much, let’s compare several smartphones

Sony Xperia ion– 133 x 68 x 10.8 mm, 144 g
– 137 x 71 x 8.6 mm, 133 g
– 132 x 68 x 8.9 mm, 133 g
– 134 x 70 x 8.9 mm, 130 g
– 128 x 64 x 10.6 mm, 144 g

It would seem that the difference in thickness between S and ion is 0.2 mm, which is difficult to notice even when comparing head-to-head, but bigger smartphone The sidewalls that widen towards the back side “give out”, which also worsens the grip of the smartphone. The ends have the same appearance. In fact, it turns out that the dimensions of the Xperia ion could be close to the Xperia S, but only if you compare their front parts. Surprisingly, 5 mm in height and 4 in width were rated as a “shovel” by the owner of the Sony Xperia S. Which once again emphasizes the fact that everything is relative.

The design of the smartphone is dominated by sharp corners. The front panel is covered with mineral glass. The plastic bordering the glass is made flush with it. This means that placing the phone on the table with the display down is not recommended, as there is a possibility of ruining the appearance of the device.

At the top there is a speaker, an HD camera lens, a proximity and light sensor, and an event indicator. At the bottom there are four touch keys - “Menu”, “Home”, “Back” and “Search”. The latter suggests that the design of the device was developed long before the Sony Xperia S, released a few months ago, which abandoned the use of this useless key. The second element that suggests this idea is the backlighting of the keys. It is located directly below the key icons and looks like small glowing stripes.

Looking at the smartphone from the front, you notice that it is more from Sony Ericsson 2011, for example, Sony Ericsson Xperia ray than from Sony Xperia S, Sony Xperia acro S. We cannot judge whether this is good or bad, but many respondents agreed that the design of the smartphone is less expressive.

On the left edge there is a retractable plastic flap, under which the MicroHDMI and MicroUSB connectors are hidden.
On the opposite side, four hardware keys are visible, two of which are combined into one elongated one responsible for adjusting the volume. The remaining two are the power/lock button at the top and the camera button at the bottom. Sony Xperia ion is the second smartphone with a large display, in which the unlock key is located not on the top end of the body, but on the side. Thanks to the “correct” placement, you do not have to train your thumb by stretching it in length. All keys protrude above the level of the body just enough so as not to attract attention and are easy to grope blindly.

There is one hole at the ends of the smartphone. At the top there is a headphone jack, and at the bottom there is a microphone. The case is slightly raised around the 3.5mm jack. Why this was done is not clear to us. Perhaps one of the designer's delights.

The back side is convex. Its main part is made of aluminum, while the area around the ends is made of plastic, which is caused by technical necessity, since antennas are located there wireless modules communications. The same sacrifice had to be made on the sidewalls: on one side there is a plastic plug, and on the other there is a plastic insert around the mechanical keys.

At the presentation of the Xperia ion, I could not determine where the SIM card was inserted, but it turned out that it was in the same place as the memory card slot. Both are Micro format. To access them, you need to move the upper part of the case away from you with considerable effort. Fortunately, this action will not have to be carried out often, so there is no need to talk about it as a minus.
Having such a proven solution, it is not clear why Sony Xperia S decided to resort to using a removable back cover, which is only needed to install a SIM card. On the other hand, even with a minimum of dismountable parts, the smartphone body creaks. Perhaps, by making a removable cover in the S-ke, the manufacturer gave the owners the opportunity to deal with squeaks using their own methods?

The camera lens is surrounded by a protrusion, which is most likely intended to protect it from scratches. Below it, closer to the center, there is a flash, a grid of slots for the speaker and, of course, the Sony Ericsson logo. I wonder when the company will come up with a new one?

So, what can we say about the design, ergonomics, build quality and materials of the device? The smartphone is really not small, but those who are looking for a compact device will never look in the direction of such giants. As befits a top-end device, the display diagonal is 4.6″ and its resolution is 1280x720 pixels. The materials used are not satisfactory, as is the build quality. The only thing that surprised me was the presence of squeaks, which are almost impossible to eliminate at home. Unless you have a hex screwdriver. The smartphone fits well in the hand, and using the correctly placed unlock key does not require any special skill.

Operating system and interface

Here you can write one thing - read the review, since the interface is the same as the one we described six months ago. At the presentation, the smartphone was installed latest version operating room Android systems 4.0.4, accordingly, we can only hope that an update for the Xperia ion is just around the corner.

Platform

Another part of the review that completely repeats the Sony Xperia S. There are only two differences - half the ROM volume, which is directly related to the second - the presence of a slot for memory cards. All! Chipset that includes two ARMv7 cores Qualcomm MSM8260 one and a half gigahertz for each, graphics core Adreno 220 And 1 GB RAM. It may seem that such characteristics do not correspond to the vision of a flagship for the middle of 2012, but even this is quite enough for comfortable work with any applications or games, in addition, the Qualcomm MSM8260 has other advantages - low power consumption, which, in the presence of a battery with a capacity of 1900 mA/ h gives good results. In numbers, this is a day of work with a small number of conversations, using the camera, automatic synchronization via Wi-Fi, and communication on social networks.

Display

Traditionally, the latest Sony devices use No air gap technology, which means there is no air gap between the display matrix and mineral glass. In practice, this results in higher brightness and a “pattern on the body” effect. When compared with the LG Optimus 4x HD, the brightness is the same, the Optimus 4x HD has better viewing angles, and the Sony has better sharpness, even without using Mobile functions Bravia Engine. Sony has obvious problems with viewing angles; as soon as you tilt the screen away from 90º, the colors begin to fade. But at typical viewing angles, the picture is pleasing to the eye, and the Sony performed well in the sun.

Camera

The final test also copies what we have already described, but since we were unable to compare the Xperia ion and Xperia S under the same conditions, we followed the usual path - we tested the camera in various situations, including how image stabilization works. In the meantime, a few words about the camera itself. Sony Xperia ion has a matrix with the most high resolution among the 12 MP Android smartphones available in Ukraine. The maximum resolution of recorded video is 1920x1080 pixels at 30 frames/s, 12-15 Mb/s bitrate, and two-channel audio.
You can start the camera through the menu or using a mechanical key. Its functionality is configured in the menu, and with a long press, the camera launches with frame fixation, the camera launches without fixation, or no action at all. The key is two-position, which allows you to use it to focus and then lock it. While recording video, you cannot focus using this key, but the camera does this automatically.
Testing has shown that when taking photographs and shooting videos, using stabilization worsens the final result. Therefore, we recommend disabling this feature.

Results

To the question: “Did the Sony Xperia ion turn out better than Sony Xperia S?”, we answer – yes! On our Xperia look ion beats the S in everything, but whether you can use a smartphone with such dimensions is another matter, because the new product is larger. The second parameter, more subjective, design is a matter of taste.
If we talk about official prices, the advantage will be on the side of the Sony Xperia S, which is quite logical, it appeared earlier, and Sony’s requests were much more modest. The recommended price for Sony Xperia ion is 7,500 hryvnia. We are confident that the market will quickly force the company to fall from heaven. We do not undertake to say what price is “correct” (minus earnings on the new product), but we can assume that by the beginning of September it will be at the level of 5500-6000 hryvnia.

Notify when on sale

Sony initially released the SONY XPERIA ion smartphone in the US market for the local mobile operator AT&T. In the states, the smartphone, as they say, went to the masses and the company decided to release it in other markets, including Russia.

But the following story turned out: the smartphone officially began to be sold in our country only in September, this is a very late date for such a smartphone. At this time, analogues from competitors are already being sold on the market, for example Samsung Galaxy SIII costs 22 thousand. rub., yes great smartphones from LG and HTC. The launch price for SONY XPERIA ion was 24 thousand. rub. and the phone went unnoticed, as they say, “it didn’t flood”!

For Sony itself, this means absolutely nothing. This is not a flagship for the company; the flagship remains the SONY XPERIA S. If so, then the SONY XPERIA ion is a “plug” between the SONY XPERIA S and the expected new flagship SONY XPERIA TX.

But nevertheless, there is something to tell about SONY XPERIA ion.....

2. USB cable.

3. Charger.

5. Various documentation.

6. Adapter for microSIM card.

The battery is not removable. As you can see, the equipment is budget. It's strange that the manufacturer didn't put HDMI wire included

Appearance, design

By appearance SONY XPERIA ion looks just great. For me personally this is one of the best designs in the smartphone market. Moderate thickness, sharp corners, pleasant weight, monolithic black body - all this creates the appearance of a fashion model. When the screen is turned off, the entire front part of the smartphone becomes a single whole and looks very impressive. The phone fits perfectly in the hand thanks to the rounded back. In appearance, the smartphone is suitable for both men and women, but the red color is more suitable for the fairer sex.

The smartphone is made of high-quality matte and glossy plastic. Rear end consists almost entirely of metal with a pleasant texture (invisible vertical stripes). The top and bottom consist of matte plastic inserts. Glossy plastic runs along the perimeter of the screen. Few fingerprints remain on the screen and back of the smartphone.

The build quality of the SONY XPERIA ion is simply excellent, I would even call it a reference. There is simply nothing to complain about. Everything is done as high quality as possible. Naturally, there is no play, creaking or other defects. The build quality is top notch.

Functional connectors on the device body:

1. At the top end, exactly in the middle, there is a 3.5mm headphone jack.

2. On the right side is the on/off/unlock/lock key for the smartphone. Just below is the volume key. At the very bottom there is a separate button for the camera.

3. There is a microphone hole at the bottom.

4. On the left side there is an HDMI and USB connector, which in turn are covered by a single plug. It is good when the various connectors on the case are covered with plugs, as this greatly reduces the risk of dust getting into the connector or damaging it.

5. On the front of the smartphone there is: a proximity sensor, a speaker, a front camera lens, and an LED notification indicator. At the bottom of the screen there are touch keys: menu, home, back, search. The keys are painted white and are not backlit. The backlight is only available in the form of strips under the keys themselves. Controversial decision. Under the keys is the inscription "XPERIA". Sensor automatic adjustment no brightness.

6. On the back of the smartphone there is the main camera, flash, second speaker, inscription and logo "XPERIA".

Functional elements

The smartphone has Android version 4.0.4. An update to 4.1 is rumored to be promised before the end of the year. The main menu is built according to the 4x5 formula for three desktops. A shell from Sony called TimeScape is installed, it is one of the best shells. The shell itself has extensive settings. Navigation through the menu occurs smoothly and without any delays.

Support for microSDXC memory cards has been implemented. 64GB card. works great.

As mentioned above, the smartphone has separate button to use the camera. A picture can be taken both from a locked state and directly when the camera is active. A very convenient feature, you can always take a photo in right moment. In the camera settings you can turn off the shutter sound, which is good when you need to take a photo in secret, so to speak. The sensor that is installed in this smartphone exactly the same as that of the SONY XPERIA S. The 12 megapixel camera allows you to take excellent pictures and even in the evening the pictures come out at a good level. I also think that at the moment this is one of the best cameras in a smartphone.

Examples of photos:

The camera allows you to shoot video in the now fashionable format like FullHD at a frequency of 30 fps. The video looks quite high quality on a 42-inch FullHD panel.

Screen. Screen size 4.55 inches. MultiTouch for 10 touches. Screen resolution 1280x720 pixels. Type TFT. Excellent screen for color reproduction (natural colors), great sharpness. IN this screen There is no air gap between the screen and the protective glass, so the image on the screen looks simply amazing, as if alive, you want to touch it. It's a pleasure to watch the film in HD format. Keep in mind that a protective film is already applied to the screen using the factory method, which will additionally protect the screen from scratches. The screen behaves well in the sun; information is almost always visible. The only thing is the viewing angles are not very large. With a strong deviation, the colors on the screen fade, but this is most likely nitpicking rather than some significant drawback. There is a large margin in brightness, which is very good.

I’ll say a few words about the touch keys: they have some kind of inhibited reaction to touch, sometimes you have to press two or three times for some action to occur. Sometimes this disadvantage It's very annoying when you need to do something quickly.

I really liked the sound in the smartphone. The speaker is moderately loud. There is a sophisticated equalizer with extensive sound settings. The smartphone has a Walkman application, which also hints at the music component of the smartphone. Excellent set of headphones. In general, lovers of high-quality music will be pleased. This smartphone is perfect for the role of an MP3 player.

The smartphone has an HDMI connector, which allows you to display any information on a monitor or TV screen. It is very convenient to view captured photos or videos.

In work, testing

Installed in the smartphone Qualcomm processor Snapdragon S3 MSM8260 and Adreno 220 video accelerator. This is certainly not the best hardware considering the end of 2012, but nevertheless this combination allows you to play modern 3D games quite comfortably. N.O.V.A 3, Dead Trigger, etc. go without problems. When working in 3D, the smartphone heats up noticeably, but this does not affect its operation in any way.

Results in synthetic tests:

There is a full-fledged GPS module. There are no problems with navigation so that there is no point in dwelling on this point in detail. Works with Navitel.

Wi-Fi. This smartphone has problems with Wi-Fi operation. The signal is not very strong, perhaps this is a problem with the metal cover and poor placement of the antenna.

I liked the quality of the transmitted speech. The sound is very clear, without interference or distortion. All thanks to the second microphone, which is responsible for noise suppression.

Possibility implemented fast charging. It takes approximately 45 minutes to fully charge.

Out of the box, the smartphone has support for the following formats: 3GPP, MP4, Matroska, AVI, WebM, so there is no point in installing the player separately.

The smartphone also has an NFC chip. For some reason it was not possible to set up work using this protocol with the Samsung Galaxy SIII....

Battery life

Installed in the smartphone non-removable battery at 1900mAh. The power consumption test results are as follows:

1. Work in “just phone” mode - 92 hours.

2. Play MP3 file. Headphones, maximum volume - 27 hours.

3. Mixed cycle work: games, Internet, video, calls, music - 12 hours.

4. Video playback - 6 hours.

The indicators are quite consistent with the declared battery density. But playing an MP3 file seemed short in time.

conclusions

The smartphone will be almost perfect. The price is rapidly falling and if you want a smartphone with excellent design, workmanship and camera, then you should definitely look at the SONY XPERIA ion.

Competitors. At the time of writing the review, the cost of SONY XPERIA ion is 21,890 rubles. IN price category up to 22 thousand rubles you can buy: HTC One X, LG P880 4X HD - as you can see, these are solutions for 4 nuclear processors and here the SONY XPERIA ion is simply outright losing to its competitors. And for 20,350 rubles. we actually get Meizu MX M032 with Galaxy SIII filling.

pros

1. Great appearance.

2. Excellent build quality.

3. Very good camera.

4. Good sound.

5. Resistant to scratches on the body.

Minuses

Of the minuses in this smartphone, I would only highlight the not very responsive touch control buttons.

I repeat: an almost perfect smartphone. And one of those that I want to replace my Galaxy SIII with.

As usual, Sony has installed a lot of different software. Here you have the well-known branded client of popular social networks Timescape, and the Track ID music recognizer, and the Astro file manager, and the OfficeSuite office suite, and a barcode scanner, and Evernote, and even the Walkman player found a place.

You should buy the case and film immediately. It's worth it. As for the touch buttons, everything is simple: you need to stroke them from bottom to top. And one more thing: if the backlight of these buttons goes out in the dark, then lightly pressing the camera button is enough. An excellent device at a reasonable price. Take it - you won't regret it)))

Year of purchase: January 2013. In general, I’m disappointed with the quality of SONY - I don’t recommend this model for purchase, you can’t do without dancing with a tambourine. Compared to the seemingly outdated SE K750i, this model should be better in many ways, but it turned out that this was not the case, the product was released onto the market raw, just to be honest! Therefore, if you take it, I recommend taking only flagship smart phones, where more or less everything works without glitches and other jambs, such as sony exp z1, z2, z3, nokia lumia, smng galaxy s4, s5, etc... So, it’s been a while since this review 2 more years, that is, I’m writing in 2017, this is the final review of this device. It is clear that now basically no one will use the same device for 5 years, but still, for comparison between the old and new Sony, I will add to the review. During this time, the phone literally began to crumble. The sensitivity of the microphone has dropped significantly, which is why it is difficult to hear at the other end, the buttons simply began to fall off from the body along with the graphite inserts when worn quite carefully, the plastic fasteners for the bolts from the metal cover cracked, the ring from the camera fell off, and about the plug for charging and HDMI is silent... And the most important thing is that the phone cannot be fixed in the software part, this is 100% Even the most latest firmware from Cyanogen 5.0.1 did not fix the situation with random reboots, overheating and freezing, but they fixed the camera, now everything is clear, it records HD video without any brakes, and third-party developers did it!! That is, after 5 years, haha... (I recommend downloading and flash someone who has problems with video recording, the firmware takes up less space and RAM, and some modern applications that are not available on version 4.1.2 will also work) Well, the k750i is still like a tank, worn out, but not killed, everything works, cannot be compared with this ion!

Advantages: +Good quality of Full HD video shooting +Appearance +Metalized body +At one time they may not have installed the best percentage, but in many applications it copes quite well today. +The display is clear, you watch movies without getting tired of your eyes

Disadvantages: 1. SIM card plug - it’s not clear why it is needed if the size is the same as standard size SIM cards. That is, you need to cut off a standard SIM card in order to insert it into the phone later with this plug, crazy... 2. The photo quality is bad. If you enlarge the photos of the SE K750i and this phone, it turns out that the quality of the matrix is “old” better!!! 3. As some in the discussion wrote about the blurriness (soapiness) of the photo, I suddenly got it after 3 months of purchase, without direct hands you can’t do anything about it... Fortunately, in latest version 4.1.2 seems to have been fixed. 4. Autofocus works terribly, it slows down - you can’t take snapshots with it, you have to press focus for 20 seconds! Again, incomparable with the SE K750i. 3. I don’t remember, but in some firmware video recording is slow (almost a slide show, that’s what it says), it can be treated with straight hands 4.Ra

Disadvantages: 1. insufficient smooth operation. can be treated by getting root and deleting unnecessary applications, but even this does not completely solve the problem. 2. The battery lasts for less than a day of active use. you have to carry the charger with you. 3. involuntary reboots at the most inopportune moment. 4. camera. at 12 megapixels it is worse than the iPhone 4s. In low light it is impossible to shoot at all. 5. cover covering the USB and HDMI connector. It's completely loose and has a lot of play. 6. sometimes when receiving an incoming call, you hear some strange sounds instead of the interlocutor. appeared relatively recently (3-4 months ago). 7. phone speaker, its sound is terrible. I bought the phone a year and a half ago. At that time the phone was ideal in terms of price/quality ratio. I liked the display, it’s huge and bright, it doesn’t scratch. In a year and a half, only 2 scratches appeared, and those were from falling on stones. The text is easy to read even under bright sun. The battery has failed. I constantly have to turn everything off and turn on economy mode. A full charge is not enough even for a day. I bought it for 10,000 rubles. For that kind of money, as they say, it’s a sin to complain :) after some time the phone gets tired and glitches begin. The programs minimize themselves, freeze, and the phone reboots. The sad thing is that the back cover is not removable, you can’t get the battery out if the phone freezes. The buttons do not respond well to touch, it takes some getting used to. I bought a Lenovo s 820 for my girlfriend for 8,000 rubles. So he gives 2000 points more in antutu than my Sonya for 10,000 rubles. The phone is not bad for the money, but I definitely wouldn’t buy it a second time

I've been using the phone for 3 years, I think this is a pretty good period for an android. The first year I couldn't be happier with the purchase of this model, it worked perfectly, no lag, good camera, screen, video... The built-in memory of 16GB was enough for the whole time, I recently remembered up to 100%. ), the rear speaker has become simply terrible, you can’t hear anything if you want to watch a video or listen to music, but with headphones the sound is just excellent. I also want to tell you about how recently he fell down a flight of stairs, flew 2 floors and nothing happened to him, also he managed to swim in the toilet, purely by accident fell out of his back pocket, I thought that the phone was gone, but literally an hour later it dried out and began to work, even better in some ways, it stopped slowing down so much, it also has a factory film on it, for everything I haven’t changed it during this time. In general, I’m happy with the phone, but soon I want to replace it with something new, I think it’s time)
