Image products are distinguished by a number of key characteristics. For example, their key feature is a deliberately worse price/functionality ratio. As a rule, they are expensive despite the fact that they do not have functional advantages over products of the average price group (and sometimes even lag behind them). Therefore, the purchase of such a product characterizes not so much the product as the buyer: they say, he has enough money to choose the quality and stylish product he likes. And a person who wants to get the maximum return for the money invested will never buy an image product - since it costs too much for the functionality it provides.

The most important, basic feature of any image product is its appearance. He must look stylish, attractive and expensive. But at the same time, it is not flashy (this difference, by the way, is clearly demonstrated when comparing truly expensive and high-quality things from their “Asian analogues”).

Finally, the third important component is the perception of the product and its manufacturer, the brand. Before selling an image product, the market must accept the manufacturer, agree that his quality and style are impeccable, and that he has earned the right to satisfy the tastes of the richest users.

Today we are testing an image ASUS model: ASUS Lamborghini VX3. The series, which uses the logo of the famous sports car manufacturer (which, by the way, also plays a vital role in the owner’s image), is ASUS’s top line.

By the way, in one of the discussions, an ASUS representative explained that the company does not have a separate image line, but has a business segment within which image models are made. Therefore, talking about the “image segment” is not entirely correct. And this is close to the truth: ASUS models really combine the characteristics of both the fashion and business segments. This should be taken into account when evaluating the model.

ASUS Lamborghini VX3 meets these three characteristics. It is quite expensive (although, as it seemed to us, it is cheaper than its analogues), it looks attractive and stylish (maybe a little bright, but Italian Lamborghinis are also not known for their modest appearance), and as for the third aspect, the VX3 borrows the charisma of the legendary manufacturer supercars - and that should be enough.

Before moving on to the functional part of the review, we would like to remind you that we filmed it, which can be viewed in the video reviews section. We recommend that you familiarize yourself with it; you can clearly see both the appearance of the laptop and its excellent packaging.

Objective testing

Finding the Lamborghini VX3 on the Russian website is quite simple; it is located in the “Style” section (in fact, a photograph of the VX3 with a yellow lid is used to design the entire section).

This is how the manufacturer characterizes the ASUS Lamborghini VX3:

Impeccable style and superb performance. Inspiration in every detail.

A more detailed description of the main functional features can be found on the ASUS website. Particular emphasis is placed on the exquisite style and the highest quality, the use of high-quality materials (titanium and genuine leather), and information protection (fingerprint scanner).

From the description you cannot go directly to the specifications; you have to return to the general page, this is a big disadvantage of navigation. But directly from the “products” section you can go to downloading drivers and utilities.

Let us remind you that ASUS company commented on the situation with her websites.

The official website of ASUS in Russia is. On the website you will find information about all product lines produced by ASUS in the world.

The site is a Russified version of the official worldwide site

The configuration is very powerful, possibly using the best available components, including processor, RAM, and hard drive. Noteworthy in the configuration is the use of an external video solution from NVIDIA.

Our measured weight of the laptop was 1855 grams, 2335 grams with the power supply.

Contents of delivery

The scope of delivery is impressive.

Firstly, the laptop itself comes in a large morocco box, and is also packed in a soft case.

The laptop comes with a black and yellow wireless mouse, matching Lamborghini colors, as well as a leather (!) mouse pad with a palm rest and also the Lamborghini logo.

All accessories are very stylish and make a great impression.

Battery life test results

Battery life testing has been carried out. All energy saving parameters were set by default. Testing was carried out in maximum battery saving mode (the text of the book is open in the reader) and in “optimized” mode (watching a DivX movie) in Windows Vista. The system turned off at 5% battery charge remaining. All wireless interfaces were disabled during the test. The battery capacity according to the test was 50380 mWh.

With a three-cell battery (capacity, according to the test, 24805 mWh), the laptop lasted 1 hour 15 minutes in reading mode.

By the way, surprisingly, when watching videos, the laptop lasted almost the same time.

We think two and a half hours is not enough for an ultra-portable laptop, although you shouldn't expect much battery life from a laptop with such a powerful configuration. The small battery showed predictably poor results; it should be used on short trips when the laptop will not last long on battery power.

Subjective characteristics

Keyboard and pointing devices

The keyboard left a good impression.

A significant complaint about the layout is the compressed letter keys on the right side. We have repeatedly mentioned that changing the size of keys with letters means making touch typing very difficult, since for it the distances and sizes of the keys must be the same. And so it happened - when typing on these keys you constantly miss. It seems to us that it was necessary to rework the layout, remove the right vertical row and move these keys to another place.

The cursor keys are also very narrow vertically; when working with them, you constantly touch adjacent keys. Also, sometimes when working with the keys of the far right row you touch the neighboring ones. Otherwise, there are no complaints about the layout: ctrl is located in the corner, just like Del, and it is convenient to use it and the right row keys when editing.

I liked the feel of the keyboard when typing. The keystrokes are good - soft but clear, there is protection against false presses. The keys do not hit the backing when pressed, so printing is quite quiet. The entire keyboard moves a little up and down in the center in the case, but for this you need to apply quite a lot of force, so the play has almost no effect when typing.

The Lamborghini touchpad is large and has a very smooth surface, somewhat reminiscent of glass. The sensitivity and acceleration settings are quite well tuned. To move the cursor across the entire screen, it takes about one and a half movements from edge to edge of the touchpad (depending on how fast you move your finger).

The touchpad has two keys, with a fingerprint scanner located between them. The keys are pressed with average force, with an audible click.

Additional keys and indicators

The VX3 only has one additional key besides the power key. Both keys are located in a cylindrical insert in the housing between the matrix and the main part.

The power key is located on the right, the additional key is on the left. The keys are large and protrude slightly above the body; they are easy to press. An additional key is configured to quickly switch energy saving modes.

Indicators in VX3 bright blue and red LEDs. All indicators are divided into two groups. One is located in the cylindrical insert of the case between the additional keys; it is visible when the cover is open.

From left to right: laptop operation indicator (lights blue when the laptop is running, blinks in sleep mode), battery indicator (blue, red), wireless interfaces indicator (blue Wi-Fi, red Bluetooth, when both interfaces are activated, both diodes are lit , the glow turns purple), hard disk access indicator, Caps lock indicator. Below the indicators are very clearly visible icons. The glow of the indicators is bright, in the dark it hurts the eyes a little.

The second group of indicators is located in the lid, under the black grille, symbolizing the air intake; they shine directly through the grille. There are only four indicators: laptop status indicator, battery status indicator, wireless network indicator, hard drive access indicator.

Frame

The appearance of a fashion laptop should be given top priority, especially considering the use of such a famous brand as Lamborghini. And, I must say, the designers did their best. The design of ASUS Lamborghini VX3 is made in the same vein as the previous models in this series. However, the laptop itself is much smaller than the VX1 and VX2, and we thought this worked to its advantage - it looks much sleeker than its predecessors.

The body is made of very high quality and good looking materials. Both metal is actively used in the finishing (the laptop lid and the edging around the keyboard are made from it) and carbon-look titanium alloy (the main elements of the case are made from it). ASUS couldn’t do without genuine leather, which is so beloved; it looks especially appropriate in this model. The bottom panel is plastic and looks rustic, which attracts attention when you turn the laptop in your hands.

The design of the case is also excellent.

The lid comes in two signature Lamborghini colors - black and yellow. It is styled to resemble the hood of a sports car with an air intake grille and features the Lamborghini emblem. In the VX3 model, the designers abandoned the carbon-look cover; now both covers are painted and varnished. We tested a model with a yellow lid; this laptop looks very bright and attracts attention. We can’t say anything about the black model, but we think it looks calmer.

The open laptop looks great: stylish and expensive, exactly how a laptop in this class should look. The combination of leather, blued metal around the keyboard and carbon fiber makes a very winning impression. By the way, the VX3’s keys are not the usual black color, but black-gray “with a spark.” The keyboard looks much better than the usual black plastic and blends very well with the laptop body.

Let's take a look at the location of the connectors.

There are no connectors on the front edge. Note that the leather cover extends over the front edge and is curved so that your wrists rest comfortably on the leather cover when typing.

On the left side, from left to right, there is a connector for the power plug (the plug itself is angled, and the wire from it goes behind the matrix), a ventilation grille, as many as three USB ports (usually there are fewer USB ports on models of this class) and a digital HDMI output, unique for this segment. The wireless interface switch is located here. Pay attention to the design of the metal insert in the middle of the case. The end of the cylindrical insert is designed like a car wheel.

The back panel is almost completely occupied by the battery. We remind you that two batteries are supplied with the VX3 - a three-cell one (it is small and does not protrude from the case) and a nine-cell one, which protrudes from the case. The batteries on the back and bottom are also trimmed with leather, apparently to make the laptop more comfortable to hold in your hand.

Finally, on the right side there is an optical drive (as far as we remember, only Super-multi, there is no Blu-ray support due to size limitations), and above it there is a card reader in a metal insert. To the right are audio jacks and another USB 2.0 port. In the corner is the port of Kensington Castle.

The bottom of the VX3 looks plain compared to the splendor of the rest of the laptop.

Screen and sound

The VX3 has a widescreen matrix with a diagonal of 12" and a resolution of 1280 × 800 pixels. The matrix is glossy, so under some conditions it glares quite strongly. The vertical angles are small, but when working, especially in applications with a light background, this has almost no effect.

The VX3 uses LED matrix backlighting. The backlight is bright at maximum level and can be adjusted within a wide range.

The sound is typical for this class of laptops: one small speaker, suitable for voicing system events, possibly for use in telephony. By the way, the VX3 starts with a powerful roar of the Lamborghini engine. When performed by a standard speaker, this roar somehow... does not sound.

Positioning

It still seems to us that the ASUS-Lamborghini VX3 is precisely a “top model of the business segment with elements of image,” and not an image product.

The laptop costs about $3200-3500. Expensive? On the one hand, yes. On the other hand, the ASUS M70 costs the same, and it is just a universal home laptop. And in this segment there are now many laptops from first-tier global manufacturers. This is undoubtedly the top of the ASUS line, but it is in the upper segment of the market, not higher.

Style? And here the situation is the same. The laptop is very beautiful, looks great on its own. But this is not its own style, it is a Lamborghini stylization.

Finally, reputation. ASUS has its own reputation - it is a manufacturer of reliable, productive laptops for both home and office. But these are work laptops, not fashion laptops. Accordingly, this laptop is unlikely to be chosen based on style and image considerations. Rather, its buyer is a person who needs a functional, convenient laptop, and also “liked” this model.

Conclusion

Very attractive, beautiful and stylish laptop. Good performance, nice functionality, a couple of good little things - both the configuration and usability are at a good level.

And at the same time very beautiful, and stylish, and even with a lot of pleasant little things that caress the heart of a lover of Italian sports cars. It is a little expensive if you look at it purely from a functional point of view, but the beautiful appearance and style are worth the extra money. We think VX3 will find its fans.

The first two models from the ASUS Lamboghini family had 15-inch screens, and this year the world saw the baby Lamborghini Gallardo L-140 in the world of laptops - the 12-inch ASUS Lamboghini VX3. Small, but daring! The laptop's specifications are impressive: 3 GB of RAM, Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 processor, GeForce video card 9300M G (a kind of “double 9300”) and a hard drive with a capacity of 320 GB. In addition, there is also an HDMI port. Even desktop replacement (DTR) class laptops can envy such a filling.

Design and ergonomics

As in the case of the VX2s model, we tested a modification with a yellow body. From a subjective point of view, it is the yellow modification that will the best solution for users who want to stand out. And the black Lambo looks stylish, but too strict. When folded, the laptop lid is somewhat reminiscent of a car hood; for complete similarity, it lacks some indicators stylized as headlights, as was done in some older LG phone models. The yellow lid quickly collects fingerprints, but they are only noticeable when viewed from an acute angle.

Scratches also “stick” to the body reluctantly, and if they appear, they are also practically invisible. The side panels have decorative plastic inserts with a chrome surface. The bottom panel is made of smooth black plastic. Unlike VX2, emulation rim no above the ventilation grille. But the linings in the form of wheel rims are installed in the corners of the body, in the area of the connecting loops.

The work area is decorated with metal inserts and a genuine leather overlay stitched with yellow threads, which is reminiscent of the front panel and seats of a sports car. Unfortunately, the stitching threads quickly get dirty, and cleaning them is a very delicate and painstaking job.

The build quality is excellent, there is not a single defect, even the battery sits in its compartment like a glove, without the slightest play. When trying to twist and squeeze, the housing creaks only in the area where the drive is installed optical disks- due to the small thickness of the bottom.

Hidden on the display cover under the grille, which imitates the air intake of a sports car, are several system status indicators (network, battery status, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi adapter status), which are invisible when switched off. At the top edge, in the center, there is a raised logo with a bull - the Lamborghini trademark.

At the front end there is only one speaker, protected by a grille.

At the back, to the left of the battery, there are communication ports Rj-11 and RJ-45, to the right is a VGA port.

On the right is a memory card reader, as well as an optical drive cover, a pair of standard audio jacks, one USB port and a Kensington security lock hole.

The left panel contains a ventilation grille, three USB ports, an HDMI port, an ExpressCard/54 slot and a sliding wireless switch.

There are two compartments available on the bottom - for installing hard disk and a common bay for installing memory modules, processor and expansion cards.

Most of the keys are standard width (17.5 mm), but the width of several letter keys on the right side and the arrow keys is reduced to 13.5 mm, which creates some inconvenience when typing, as well as in car and flight simulator games. The keystrokes are quite soft and crisp, and the actuation sound is very quiet.

The touch panel has not a traditional rectangular, but a trapezoidal shape, its upper part is slightly wider. The manipulator keys are also of a very specific shape. A fingerprint sensor is installed between the keys. It is set deep enough, so accidental touches, accompanied by system messages about an incorrect fingerprint, are practically excluded.

On the laptop lid mount, the power buttons and an additional key for cyclically changing energy saving modes are located symmetrically. In the center there are system status indicators - power, battery charge, wireless interface mode, activity hard drive and a key indicator. Just to the left of the power button there is a hole for the built-in microphone.

At the top edge of the display there is a camera - unlike the VX2s, it is not rotating.

Display

The laptop has a 12.1-inch LCD matrix with WXGA resolution (1280x800 pixels), glossy finish and LED backlight. Thanks to the use of LEDs, the thickness of the cover is small, and the uniformity of illumination is good - only the upper and lower edges of the matrix are slightly overexposed. Horizontal viewing angles are large, but vertical ones are not always sufficient, and the tilt of the display has to be adjusted to correctly reproduce colors. When viewed at right angles, color rendition, contrast and clarity are not satisfactory. The backlight power level varies over a large range, but in steps. Too sharp a change in brightness occurs when moving from the first to the second level, then the change occurs more evenly. There are 15 gradations in total, this is more than enough to select the optimal brightness level. In bright sunlight, the image fades a little, but remains easy to read due to the fact that the matrix can work on reflected rays. You can connect external displays to a standard analog VGA port or a digital HDMI port - the latter is very rare on laptops with a screen diagonal of less than 14 inches.

Sound subsystem

The sound subsystem is based on Realtek codec ALC 888. The characteristics of the sound controller declared by the manufacturer are 24 bit/192 kHz, it is possible to connect eight-channel speaker systems in parallel with stereo. The signal-to-noise ratio of the DAC is up to 97 dB, the ADC - up to 90 dB. Compatibility with EAX/Direct Sound 3D/I3DL2/A3D and DTS is also stated. With more detailed description The codec can be found on the manufacturer's website. The laptop has one built-in speaker. The developers considered that to reduce weight and dimensions, the second speaker could be sacrificed, since most users would choose headphones or external speakers to listen to music in any case. The built-in speaker is only suitable for audible system signals. His frequency range narrow, the sound is empty. Although it is worth noting that even if there is bass in the melody and at maximum volume, the speaker does not “choke”. In headphones or external speaker system the sound is many times better, and the test package RightMark Audio Analyzer 6.0.6 (hereinafter referred to as RMAA) rated the audio path as “good”. But still, connoisseurs of high sound quality should purchase an external sound card with a USB or ExpressCard interface for the third Lambo. Overall RMAA results Operating mode: 16-bit, 44 kHz

Wireless interfaces

ASUS VX3 is equipped with an adapter wireless network Intel Wireless Pro 4965AGN and Bluetooth module with EDR support. To manage wireless interfaces, standard OS tools are used, as well as dedicated control keys. Setting up local (including wireless) network parameters is possible using the proprietary ASUS NetSwitch utility, which supports many independently created profiles. This greatly simplifies the work if the PC is used on different networks, with different settings.

Noise level and thermal conditions

The cooling system is equipped with a fan with five fixed rotation speeds, but when changing modes, the rotation speed changes smoothly without creating acoustic discomfort. During testing, the following noise levels were recorded - 33.1, 35.1, 38.5, 40.2 and 42.1 dB. That is, on average the levels differ by 2 dB. The last two modes are used extremely rarely, for example, during video editing, when running resource-demanding games or archiving a large package of files. The LG optical drive is very quiet, and even a “crooked” disk did not make it “shout out” to the cooling system - exactly 40 dB. Measurements were taken at a distance of 20 cm from the center of the front edge of the laptop. The temperature of the air exhausted by the cooling system under any load is always almost the same - 46.2-48.3 degrees, only the air flow speed changes. The maximum temperature of the keys is 29.1 degrees, the bottoms - from 27 to 32 degrees. Only in the area of the memory modules (and not the processor, as expected) did the temperature exceed 37 degrees. Measurements were made at temperature environment 21 degrees Celsius.

Performance

Due to the lack of direct competitors, the Samsung R700 laptop was chosen as an opponent, as well as the ASUS VX3, which is equipped with a more powerful video subsystem.

Power supply and battery life

ASUSTeK has always pampered its customers with luxurious packages, and even with the most affordable laptop models, the user always receives a bag and a mouse. The VX3 package includes, among other things, an additional nine-cell lithium battery with an impressive capacity of 7800 mAh. The main battery is three-cell and its capacity is 2400 mAh. The additional battery is quite large and protrudes 39 mm beyond the rear wall of the case, while the main one is flush with the laptop body. Testing of both batteries was carried out in the Battery Eater Pro 2.7 package in the “classic” mode.

conclusions

ASUS-Lamborghini series laptops, like Lamborghini supercars, do not leave anyone indifferent. In a cafe, in an office, just on the street - wherever you had to work with the VX3, it attracted the gaze of others. Everyone wants to look at the laptop itself and see what kind of logo is in the center of its lid. You often hear exclamations in the style of “Yes, this is an ASUS Lambo!” It’s nice to know that your laptop is so interesting not only to yourself, but also to those around you. At this point, it’s worth stopping the rave reviews and clearly listing what’s good and what’s not so good (I wouldn’t dare use “bad” to describe the VX3) of the ASUS Lamborghini VX3 laptop. Minuses: a single speaker with low sound quality, slight illumination of the upper and lower edges of the matrix, several narrow keys. Pros: stylish and bright design, good quality assembly, four USB ports, an HDMI connector, LED screen backlight, low body temperature, relatively low noise level, high performance, a luxurious package (including two batteries with a total capacity of 10,200 mAh) and... price. Yes, yes, its considerable cost is also a plus, because powerful “babies” are usually quite expensive, and often more expensive than the hero of the review. Among the 12-inch models for ASUS Lamborghini VX3 it is difficult to find a worthy competitor in terms of performance, so the laptop rightly deserves the distinction from 3DNews. We thank the representative office of ASUS in Ukraine for the equipment provided.

Recently ASUSTeK company Computer introduced a new gaming laptop Lamborghini VX7. The design of this device was developed jointly with the designers of the Automobili Lamborghini stable. This is not the first collaboration between the two giants. Previously, we already had the opportunity to get acquainted with the fashion laptops of the ASUS Lamborghini series. The last to be presented was the ASUS Eee PC VX6 Lamborghini subnotebook. By the way, the VX6 and VX7 are very similar in design. This is not surprising, because the design of both devices is based on the Murcielago LP640 sports car.

So, this fifteen-inch laptop will delight you not only with its outstanding appearance, but also with its amazing performance. The device is equipped with a top-end quad-core Intel Core processor of the Sandy Bridge family, a video card from NVIDIA, hard drives with a total capacity of 1.5 TB (HDD+SSD can be installed) and RAM up to 16 GB. The laptop may have an integrated Blu-ray drive. Everything is done using the latest computer technology. This is not surprising, because the ASUS Lamborghini VX7 laptop is the brainchild of great companies.

Design

There are quite a lot of laptops with powerful hardware, but not many can boast of a truly interesting design. ASUS Lamborghini VX7 is a laptop that can hardly be called “ordinary”. The design of this device was developed jointly with representatives of Lamborghini, a manufacturer of expensive sports cars. Everyone has heard about this concern. The beauty and power of the cars of the Italian corporation fascinates everyone and everything. The VX7 is based on the Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 sports car. The common features of this car and the new ASUS laptop can be seen in everything. By the way, the car itself was first presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 2006. Alas, the Lamborghini Murciélago series was discontinued at the end of 2010. Let's consider the ASUS Lamborghini VX7 to be part of the glorious history of the Murciélago.

So, the lid of the ASUS Lamborghini VX7 is made in the same style as the hood of the Murciélago LP640. It features the Automobili Lamborghini logo. The protrusions and curvature of the lid resemble the features of a supercar; the aggressiveness and harsh nature of the model can be seen with the naked eye. On the rear edge there are two ventilation grilles, above them there are two red LED strips (imitation of a car’s brake light). Made in the same style rear end supercar.

The common features of this laptop and car are noticeable not only in the exterior. The interior decoration of the laptop also emphasizes the high status of the model. Thus, the palmar area is covered with leather (like the interior of the Murciélago LP640). On top, above the keyboard, there is a decorative perforated grille, under which the audio system speakers are hidden. The symmetry of the interior gives the laptop sophistication and elegance.

The build quality of this device is simply excellent. There will be no squeaks, bends or play. ASUS Lamborghini VX7 can be made in two colors. If you are a bright personality and want to stand out against the background of the “gray” mass, then the orange color of the model is more suitable for you. However, with VX7 you will not go unnoticed in any case. Even if you buy a black laptop.

Display and sound

Such a device cannot be equipped with a budget matrix. The display of this device is extremely bright and clear. The diagonal of the LED-backlit screen is 15.6 inches. The resolution of the matrix is 1920x1080 pixels (Full HD), aspect ratio 16:9. The image on ASUS Lamborghini VX7 seems deep and realistic. The heroes of modern computer games are about to jump out of the screen! And at your leisure, you can empathize with the movie characters, because viewing HD content on a high-contrast widescreen matrix is so interesting and exciting!

The viewing angles of the display are absolutely standard. They are slightly larger horizontally and smaller vertically. Due to the design features, the display cover can deviate no more than 130 degrees. By the way, the display frame looks a little ridiculous. It looks a bit wide.

The laptop's sound system includes two built-in speakers and a digital microphone. The Azalia sound chip supports the so-called 3D effect (surround sound). By and large, these are just big words. Of course, the ASUS Lamborghini VX7 will sound better than any average laptop, but the laptop’s audio system cannot compare with external acoustics.

Keyboard and touchpad

The laptop is equipped with a full-size island-type keyboard. The buttons are spaced 2 mm apart from each other. The keyboard backing is made of glossy black plastic. This is not particularly practical, because such a surface quickly becomes scratched and covered with dust. The square matte keys have excellent mechanical properties and operate accurately. Traditionally for gaming devices, the W-A-S-D buttons are marked with arrows (for controlling the character in games).

The touchpad has the shape of an inverted trapezoid. Along the perimeter the touch pad is made of brushed metal. The panel itself has a matte surface, with a vertical scroll bar on the side. In addition, the touchpad recognizes a large number of multi-gestures. Two separate metal buttons have a clear moment of operation; when pressed, a characteristic ringing sound is produced.

Processor and performance

Collaboration with the Lamborghini brand simply obliges this laptop to be as powerful as its “prototype”. Equip with mediocre ASUS components The Lamborghini VX7 is akin to a crime. Therefore, ASUSTek has equipped the device with only the most powerful components. The performance of the device will be driven by an Intel Core i7-2630QM processor with a frequency of 2 GHz. It is based on the Sandy Bridge architecture and supports Hyper-Threading and self-overclocking technologies Turbo Boost, thanks to which the frequency can increase to 2.9 GHz.

The Core i7-2630QM features an integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000, which should be faster than the older Intel HD Graphics cards in Arrandale design processors. In addition, an improved dual-channel DDR3 memory controller is located on the same die as the CPU, so it is shared by both the processor and graphics card. The third level cache is 6 MB.

Will deal with graphics in the laptop discrete video card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M with GDDR5 video memory. This adapter is one of the ten most powerful mobile graphics cards. Any modern computer game with a GTX 460M will simply “fly”. Both Metro 2033 and Mafia 2 will run at the highest high settings and detail.

Two hard drives with a total capacity of 1.5 TB can be used to store data. The official website of ASUS says that these can be hard drives of various sizes and at different speeds spindle rotation: 500 GB (7200 rpm), 640 GB (5400 rpm), 750 GB (5400 rpm, 7200 rpm). Information can also be stored on a HDD+SSD hybrid. The volume of the solid-state drive is 4 GB.

Volume random access memory DDR3-1333 can reach 16 GB. There are 4 memory slots for this.

Ports and communications

ASUS Lamborghini VX7 – clean gaming laptop, so the set of ports on this mobile PC looks quite expected. There is a microphone input, an output for external acoustics (S/PDIF), a VGA video output, an HDMI interface, a USB 3.0 port, three USB 2.0 ports and an RJ-45 connector (local area network). The multi-format card reader is able to recognize 8 types of memory cards: SD, Mini-SD, MS, MS Pro, MS Duo, MS Pro Duo, xD, MMC. The laptop may come with one of three optical drives: Super-Multi DVD, Blu-ray Writer, Blu-ray reader. The display frame houses a two-megapixel webcam.

Responsible for access to wireless networks Wi-Fi adapters 802.11n and Bluetooth V2.1+EDR (optional).

The Lamborghini VX7 comes with an eight-cell battery with a capacity of 5200 mAh.

Conclusion

ASUS Lamborghini VX7 is more than just a laptop. This device is created for the real gamer. And it’s not just about the laptop’s contents. The very appearance suggests that incredible power is hidden “under the hood” of this device. The design of the VX7 was developed jointly with the Lamborghini concern. The Murciélago LP640 sports car was taken as the basis. So, top processor Second-generation Intel Core, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M video card, 16 GB of RAM and a spacious hard drive - all this confirms the seriousness and aggression of the model.

Two heads, a hundred hands and a thousand eyes

The fact that laptops are a popular and in-demand thing has been no surprise for five years now, even in Russia (in Europe and America, as always, this was understood earlier, but what can we do, we all know which way the planet is facing for now) spins). People buy and will continue to buy laptops because they are convenient and functional: regular computer you can’t carry it with you, PDAs still don’t reach what you want in terms of functionality, and UMPCs haven’t even really been invented yet, only a vague idea is in the air, periodically turning into something rather lopsided... in general, laptops lived, are alive and continue in the same spirit. But it’s boring for manufacturers to rivet “workhorses” all the time. And users want something more interesting, more original. Nowadays, it has generally become fashionable to be original - we are so tired of school uniforms and identical jeans on the Vietnamese market, we need something new. So that it’s not like everyone else’s. And it is also desirable that it looks more expensive - with some well-known, expensive brand, which just by the combination of letters commands respect. So, about brands. In 2003, somewhere in the minds of the management of Acer, a bright idea arose that one head is good, but two are still better. And Acer began to collaborate with Ferrari, and made the first “car” laptop - a red one. Lamborghini, which has historically always turned its face to the future, and its nostrils to Ferrari (which you need to breathe into while running), simply could not help but notice such impudence - and since December 2005, another joint brand has appeared on the market. Created by the Italian automobile concern Automobili Lamborghini and the leader of the Taiwanese computer industry ASUSTeK Computer. The result of their collaboration was a whole series of spectacular ASUS Lamborghini laptops: VX1, VX2 and now VX3.

Go make your own tractors...

It all started in Italy, in the sixties of the last century. And it started with famous manufacturer tractors Ferruccio Lamborghini suddenly showed interest in high-speed cars. He already had cars produced by Osca, Maserati and Ferrari, but not a single car suited him in all respects - well, what are you going to do, there is no perfection in life... Rumor has it that even Lamborghini once came to Enzo Ferrari’s factory to complain about the quality clutch in your Ferrari. And Enzo sent him back with a friendly wish to continue working on tractors - because Lamborghini supposedly knows nothing about cars, and especially sports cars. He, of course, was upset, out of grief he picked out the transmission in his Ferrari 250 GT and discovered that the parts used were the same as in his tractors... in his own warehouses he found a suitable replacement - and after assembly the problem was solved. It would be stupid to stop there - and Enzo’s arrogant friend really wanted to wipe his nose. Therefore, after a couple of months, Ferruccio lures one of the company’s leading engineers, the young and talented Giotto Bizzarini, from Ferrari - and together they come up with the first Lamborghini sports car. Model 350GTV. In 1963, it was presented to the public at the Turin auto show, great success and instantly made the new brand widely known in narrow circles. The first success was followed by a second, named Lamborghini 400GT, and then a third, Lamborghini Miura. In 1971, the company, which had already become a market leader, created the revolutionary Lamborghini Countach model - it, however, will begin to be sold only in 1974, but it will bring world fame to its creators. Born under the sign of Taurus, Ferruccio Lamborghini decorated the logo with the image of a bull - and now the whole planet knows this bull.

Beast machine! Genus, species, class

But let's get back to laptops. So, the engineers and designers of the joint team were faced with a difficult task - to create not just another mobile computer in a “car wrapper”, but a mobile computer that would be chic, fashionable and powerful, different from its modest “brothers” as much as Lamborghini is different from ordinary foreign cars. So that it turns out not anyhow, but a real fusion of technology and frantic energy - after all, Lamborghini cars are sports, fast and expensive, so the laptop had to come out in style. Well, so as not to disgrace the glorious name in general and the golden bull in particular.

Happened. The body of the laptop was made of shiny metal and expensive yellow plastic, the panel on both sides of the touchpad was covered in leather (and the battery was also covered in leather, by the way), and special blue sparkles were added to the keyboard, which are not even noticeable in the light, but glow slightly in the dark - to make typing at night more convenient.

The first two versions of Lamborghini Books were large and heavy - they looked luxurious, but you can’t really carry such a thing with you, it’s still heavy. This time, the manufacturers decided to reduce the size (and with it the weight) in order to attract the attention of very busy businessmen and women: the diagonal of the laptop screen was only 12”, but with WXGA resolution, a travel version. Latest Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 processor (Penryn), 320 GB SATA hard drive, Nvidia video card GeForce 9300M G, 4 GB RAM. There is also a Bluetooth and Wi-Fi module of all kinds, and its own built-in modem. All this, including the battery, weighs a little more than one and a half kilograms - you can carry it with you without particularly straining.

Manufacturers did not deprive the laptop of connectors: there are only four USB 2.0 connectors. Also available is HDMI, output to an external monitor, two network connectors - LAN and modem, PCI Express slot, 5-in-1 card reader, DVD-ROM (of course, recording and supporting LightScribe technology), headphone and microphone jacks... and There's even a slot for a Kensington lock. So that, God forbid, no one steals your laptop.

Premium laptop - premium accessories. At your disposal will be a bag with leather trim, two batteries (main and high capacity), a wireless mouse, a manual for its use, a leather mouse pad and case, a cloth for the display, a user manual in Russian, a brochure with the history of Lamborghini cars on English, and a whole bunch of other software.

We will go, we will rush...

If you need powerful laptop(one that certainly doesn’t slow anything down), then the Lamborghini VX3 is your choice. Because games run on it, programs are loaded and unloaded instantly, and the RAM never runs out...

When turned on, the laptop makes the sound of a car starting - and begins to vigorously load Windows Vista Ultimate Edition. He does it quickly, clearly, one-two-three times. To log into the system, you can use a password, or you can simply put your finger on the fingerprint sensor: the computer will instantly recognize you as the owner and let you into the system.

New wireless communication format

There are two problems in the modern world: time and money. Moreover, time is a much more serious problem, because money can still be obtained, accumulated and multiplied, but over time such things do not go away. People have little time (especially if these people are businessmen), but they need to do everything, so no one wants to waste minutes - and so, we conduct business negotiations through Internet conferences, all our important correspondence is electronic, we read news from news sites, and the weather is shown to us by google-desktop in the corner of the computer screen. In general, today you can’t live without the Internet. Therefore, all laptops have long been equipped with a whole range of wired and wireless communication modules: from a LAN connector to Wi-Fi of all letters of the alphabet. However, in order to use GPRS, you have to connect a mobile phone to the laptop - via a USB cable or Bluetooth. Or rather, I had to connect. Because you don’t need to connect anything to the Lamborghini VX3 - it has its own HSDPA modem that supports third-generation networks. The SIM card slot is hidden on the back panel, under the battery - so it is better to get a separate card for modem communication. Insert it there once and never take it out again.

To control the modem, a special program was invented, which is incredibly simple. It's called 3G Watcher and manages your connection: calls the operator, establishes a connection and keeps it, displays packet transmission statistics, and so on. You can also set it to “schedule dialing” - say, to download news twice a day, for breakfast and dinner. You can set a list of programs that can and cannot independently use the HSDPA connection (so that, for example, the antivirus does not start downloading updates via GPRS without your knowledge), configure access rights to the SIM card for different users (if you are a computer administrator , of course), and so on. The program, unfortunately, is only in English - but, believe me, understanding it is really very simple.

Verdict ION

This device is inherently exclusive, since it contains all the best that is in the world of laptops - and at the same time it is also wrapped in a “car wrapper”. The concept of “speed” has become defining for the Lamborghini VX3. Like its cousins on the automotive side, it's powerful, strong and very, very stylish. The “computer” side has added productivity and the latest technologies, expanding the mobility of the “machine” to the limit - now you can access the Internet using the GPRS protocol without connecting additional modems to the computer.

Introduction Whether or not to believe in “time-dusted” stories is everyone’s business, but one of the legends, very close to the theme of our story today, says: “One early summer morning in the hot year of 1962, a Ferrari 365 GT stopped at the entrance to Enzo Ferrari’s office in Maranello. A middle-aged man of presentable appearance came out of it and went straight to the boss's reception area. by eye, as is customary in the circles of true entrepreneurs. The secretary, having entered the boss’s office, forgot to close the door behind her, so the visitor became an involuntary witness to the conversation. “Signor ... would like to talk to you,” the secretary said, “he drives a Ferrari and wanted to I would like to make a few comments about the car." In response, the head of the already eminent company at that time asked in a loud and dissatisfied voice: "...? Who is it? Explain to him that this is not a public yard and I don’t have time for every client.” “It was a real blow for me,” the failed visitor later admitted, “I immediately rushed home, drank a glass of wine to calm down, and at the same time day I sold my Ferrari. The scoundrel Ferrari will still recognize me!” That’s actually the whole parable, as you already guessed, of course it was none other than Ferruccio Lamborghini, at that time already a very influential and rich man in Italy, whose name was known thanks to the production of competitive tractors, especially relevant for agriculture in the post-war period.

It so happened that the decision to create a company was made under the pressure of emotions, very simply “we are starting to build cars” and that’s it, economic calculations were left “overboard”, the main goal was to build a sports car that would surpass the quality of the products of the famous “Scuderia”. At the beginning of 1963, at the Turin Motor Show, the first sign was presented to the public - the Lamborghini 350 GT. Then the history of the company flowed with varying success, models replaced each other, like the owners, from 1998 to this moment, “Automobili Lamborghini” belongs to Audi, in turn, a division of the Volkswagen AG concern. Thanks to the “fresh ideological breath” introduced by the new owners, the legendary Diablo and Murcielago appeared, and at the Geneva Motor Show in 2003, the debut of the long-awaited and relatively miniature Gallardo model took place (power 500 hp, maximum speed exceeds 300 km/h, and acceleration time up to 100 km/h is only 4 seconds).

Lamborghini Gallardo

Actually, this model inspired the designers and engineers of another famous computer brand ASUSTeK to produce a portable computer with the proud name ASUS Lamborghini VX1, imbued with the racing spirit, squeaking brakes, clouds of smoke from under the wheels and the roar of engines, together with their colleagues from Lamborghini, whose debut took place in Bologna (Italy) directly on the territory of the legendary factory for the production of sports and racing cars. This event launched a new stage in laptop car racing, bringing relevance back to the long-standing rivalry between Ferrari and Lamborghini in the auto industry and continuing the shifting of scales between slightly less old competitors Acer and ASUS.

ASUS Lamborghini VX1

ASUS Lamborghini VX1 is like a sports coupe: bold, bright, aggressive. Every detail is polished to the smallest detail, a stylish top lacquered lid, magnesium-aluminum inserts, strict and at the same time elegant lines. Under the hood, crowned with the famous "Automobili Lamborghini" logo in the form of a bull (in fact, it is not a bull, but a Taurus - the zodiac sign under which Ferruccio Lamborghini was born), there is a "motor" maximum power, a productive video card, like all other high-tech “internals”, strive to make the laptop “go away” from the start and in the blink of an eye turn into a point.

Of course, it would be more correct to compare the “racing creations” of Acer and ASUS with each other, but the Acer Ferrari 4005WLMi is built on a single-processor solution from AMD, as opposed to the dual-core “heart” of the ASUS Lamborghini VX1. The new dual-core Ferrari model has not yet reached the domestic market. Therefore, the car from ASUSTeK will be opposed today by ASUS V6J, on the “chassis” of which our guest today is installed. In terms of interior, both laptops are very similar, the only noticeable difference is the processor frequency and the amount of RAM; the ASUS V6J has lower both of these parameters. By the way, with the top cover raised, the exterior of the mobile cars is visually very close.

ASUS Lamborghini VX1: packaging and delivery

The packaging box of ASUS Lamborghini VX1 is different from those in the budget version. On the visible sides with a black background, the “hood” of a laptop computer with a bull “Automobili Lamborghini” is depicted; the exact same logo is duplicated in the upper right corner. The model name and the name of the laptop computer manufacturer are printed in white so that even with the relatively small size of the letters they are clearly visible. The principle of nesting dolls, typical of products from ASUSTeK, is also present. The box with the laptop itself and the smallest accessories is placed in a larger one together with a bag for carrying the “portable car”.

ASUS Lamborghini VX1: packaging box

The appearance of the ASUS Lamborghini VX1 packaging is quite consistent with its content, neither give nor take, laptop computers from ASUSTeK have always been famous for the richness of the package, and today’s bright representative of the family, tailored for “laptop racing”, is no exception. In addition to the laptop itself, the following was found in the box: a rechargeable battery with a capacity of 5200 mAh; AC adapter with indicator light; modem cable; "Quick Installation Guide"; two-year warranty card for the laptop; list of authorized service centers Worldwide; user manual (in Russian); LCD ZBD monthly warranty brochure; a small Bluetooth mouse from Logitech with the words ASUS and Lamborghini in the middle along with installation instructions; a bag and case for carrying a laptop computer with Lamborghini symbols, a booklet "ASUS-LAMBORGHINI VX1", a napkin for wiping the monitor (and not only that, I think) and a set of disks that included:

Two system recovery disks (Recovery);
Disk Driver&Utility ver. 1.0;
Nero v. 6.6.0.15;
Medi@Show SE 2.0;
PowerDirector DE v 3.0.1208;
ASUS DVD v.6.0.

The Bluetooth-enabled Rodent, manufactured as already mentioned by Logitech, is powered by standard AA batteries. To replace batteries, you just need to pull the top cover in the opposite direction from the buttons. Wireless mouse– this is certainly convenient, but it obliges you to promptly monitor the battery charge level so that you don’t have to switch to working with the Touchpad at the most inopportune moment.

ASUS Lamborghini VX1: mouse with Bluetooth interface

As the “play” progressed, another question arose, why the yellow laptop (ASUS Lamborghini VX1 arrived for testing in yellow color) a black mouse is attached. It is worth assuming that this was probably a special order from ASUS and the designers did not have the opportunity to vary the colors.

ASUS Lamborghini VX1: design and ergonomics

Moving from the packaging to a direct examination of today’s “hero,” the eyes stop at the bright yellow hood of the “portable car” (in general, the ASUS Lamborghini VX1 is available in two color variations; in addition to yellow, there is also a searing black, no less polished and bright, thereby ASUSTeK presents the potential owner with a difficult choice, because both color solutions are really good). The lines are strict and the geometry, coupled with the color, is strongly reminiscent of a true Lamborghini. Both edges are decoratively raised towards the back with narrow stripes, forming between themselves a kind of “air intake”, in the middle of which, when the top cover is lowered, duplicated system indicators clearly glow.

ASUS Lamborghini VX1: front view

In the middle, closer to the protruding part of the lid, designed to raise the display, is the Automobili Lamborghini logo with a body inside. The inscription of the manufacturer of the laptop itself modestly found its place at the very edge of the “air intake” or, in other words, “pseudo-poler”.

ASUS Lamborghini VX1: logo on the lid

The group of indicators on the lid includes (from left to right):

ASUS Lamborghini VX1: status indicators
on the top cover

Power indicator (lit when the laptop is turned on; blinks when the PC is in standby mode; when the computer is turned off or in sleep mode (STD) the indicator is off);

There is no lock for securing the display; there is a small protrusion at the end of the top cover, holding which it is not difficult to open the laptop. Inside, the color scheme changes sharply from yellow to black, which is quite logical, because... if what was contained under the “hood” had such a bright color, then it could be distracting and simply disturb its owner, dazzling the eyes with its relatively “poisonous” color. The interior decoration is very reminiscent of the ASUS V6J, from which we can make a bold assumption that they have the same “base”, because And dimensions, with the exception of the thickness due to the built-in “air intake”, are the same. In the center of the frame around the display there is an ASUS logo; along its perimeter there are rubber pads for a softer fit to the bottom. At the base of the screen, between the two hinges, a battery clearly fits into the entire thickness of the bottom of the laptop computer, which fits snugly to the second group of indicators together with the PC power button and the quick launch keys, located a little closer to the keyboard, and forming a small black " edging".

ASUS Lamborghini VX1: open

Of the mentions of Lamborghini, only the inscription with the name of the brand, displayed in white, remains.

ASUS Lamborghini VX1: inscription under the keyboard

The display mounting mechanism is no different from the ASUS V6J, the hinge bases are a continuation of the top cover, this method makes it possible to move the screen away from the user by several centimeters, but the maximum opening angle of the laptop is limited and is relatively far from 180 degrees, which can be seen in the photo below:

ASUS Lamborghini VX1: opening angle

ASUS Lamborghini VX1 is equipped with a 15.0-inch matrix with a maximum resolution of 1400x1050 pixels with a classic 4:3 aspect ratio (SXGA+). Subjectively, the vertical and horizontal viewing angles are quite decent, as befits expensive models. There is a “glass” coating on the display, which adds richness to the image on one side and, on the other, displays any well-lit object or light source located behind. For this reason, the potential owner of a “race car” is provided with a search for the most favorable incidence of light.

The nature of the “glassiness” is hidden in the use of proprietary ASUS technology ASUS Color Shine (a special polymer coating) - this is a technology for the production of “glass” liquid crystal displays, which provides exceptional picture quality and color saturation, creating a more vibrant and colorful image.

ASUS Color Shine Technology

In addition to Color Shine, the ASUS Lamborghini VX1 has another proprietary technology from ASUSTeK - ASUS Splendid Video Enhancement.

ASUS Splendid Video Enhancement technology is an intelligent image control that allows you to customize the picture on the screen using preset modes (controlled by the Fn + C key combination).

ASUS Splendid Video Enhancement Technology

For the Lamborghini VX1 series of laptops, as well as for the V6J, the manufacturer provides a one-time thirty-day LCD Zero Bright Dot warranty, which gives the owner of the laptop the right to replace the display at the support service if bright dots are detected. To do this, you need a sales receipt or any other document confirming the fact of purchase.

LCD Zero Bright Dot Warranty

The number of brightness gradations in the ASUS Lamborghini VX1 is traditionally sixteen; when setting the lowest levels, what is visible on the screen rapidly approaches “zero”.

ASUS Lamborghini VX1:
brightness levels

Using a special Pantone ColorVision Spyder device and the OptiCAL ver. program installed under it. 3.7.8 measurements of the brightness and contrast of the monitor were made. When powered from the mains and battery, the brightness value was set to the maximum position, after which the test was started. When changing the power supply to the battery, its performance dropped significantly, thanks to those installed in portable ASUS computers energy saving systems that operate by default. The brightness values are quite impressive, but the same cannot be said about the contrast:

Values from the network:

contrast: 40:1;
brightness: 132.3 cd/sq.m.

Battery values:

contrast: 41:1;
brightness: 104.7 cd/sq.m.

The laptop is equipped with an 87-key keyboard in black color. "Enter" is a classic L-shape. The cursor control buttons are in line with the bottom of the keyboard, making them more likely to be pressed accidentally. The "Fn" key is located, typical for ASUS, in the lower left corner, which is not very convenient for those who often use the combinations "Ctrl+C", "Ctrl+V", because the risk of pressing it incorrectly instead of Ctrl increases. Built-in numeric keypad and two dedicated Microsoft Windows buttons. One of them is located in the bottom row of the keyboard, to the right of the spacebar key and launches the "properties" menu or works similarly to clicking right button mouse on any object. The second “Windows”, which opens the “Start” menu, is located in the same place, symmetrically to the left of the space bar. The function keys are slightly smaller. Home, PgUp, PgDn and End are lined up vertically on the right; Pause, Print Scrn, Ins and Del are located in one line along with the function keys. Latin letters are highlighted in white, Russian letters are highlighted in pale green, function keys are colored blue (the functions hidden underneath can be used after pressing and holding Fn).

ASUS Lamborghini VX1: keyboard

Touchpad ASUS Lamborghini VX1 is the twin brother of its “colleague” ASUS V6J. The color and “metalized” structure matches the surrounding surface. The touch panel is as close to black as possible and has a dedicated scrolling area on the right side. There is no additional text scrolling joystick. Distinctive feature This Touchpad is the presence between the keys that replace the right and left buttons of a regular mouse, when the laptop is turned on and the unit itself is not turned off, the original blue backlight.

The Touchpad is locked by pressing a special key, the location of which will be described below. This process will be displayed on the screen as follows:

The entire front edge of the bottom of the laptop is literally drilled with tiny decorative holes with a smooth “bending” of the Touchpad, hiding two relatively loud stereo speakers underneath, thereby bringing the sound as close as possible to the user and at the same time making it possible to block the stereo speakers with your hands. Changing the volume settings is done with By pressing the "Fn" and "F10", "F11", "F12" keys together, this is displayed on the screen in the form of the following images:

Changing volume settings

On the left side of the strip “riddled” with holes there are status indicators, duplicated on the top cover, plus one, which there was absolutely no point in bringing up (from left to right):

ASUS Lamborghini VX1: status indicators

Touch panel off indicator (lit when the corresponding button is pressed);
Power indicator (lights blue when the laptop is on; blinks when the PC is in standby mode; when the computer is turned off or in sleep mode (STD), the indicator is off);
Battery charging indicator (lit when the battery is charging; off – the battery is charged or completely discharged);
Bluetooth indicator (lit when Bluetooth function is activated);
Wireless indicator (blinks when packets are being sent or received using the built-in wireless adapter).

The visibility of this group of indicators is low, because the light still penetrates into the same tiny holes, albeit of a slightly larger diameter than those surrounding them. You can only see the operation of the unit in the immediate vicinity and then not from all angles.

Another group of status indicators, together with the power key of the laptop computer (illuminated by two blue LEDs), is nestled next to the right hinge and retracted along battery to the left, including:

Activity indicator (shows the computer's access to storage devices: hard drive or optical drive);
Numeric keypad indicator Num Lock(lit when the numeric keypad is activated);
Caps Lock indicator (lights up if the letters being typed are converted to upper case);
Scroll Lock arrow keyboard indicator (lit when Scr Lk mode is activated, which allows some letter keys to be used to move the cursor).

Symmetrically to this group of status indicators, only at the left hinge, there are quick launch keys (from left to right):

Touchpad Lock key (locks touchpad when using an external mouse and helps to avoid accidental movement of the cursor while typing, when pressed, the corresponding indicator lights up, and the backlight between the left and right keys of the Touchpad goes out);
Launch key for ASUS's proprietary Power4 Gear+ power saving utility (allows you to switch between different power saving modes, allowing you to control many aspects of the laptop to improve performance or battery life, such as changing the processor frequency, screen brightness and control circuits Windows power supply). When using mains power, three operating modes are available, when using battery power – seven;

Bluetooth key (pressing turns on or off the built-in Bluetooth function, the indicator lights up when turned on);
Internet login key (pressing activates the Internet browser);
Wireless LAN key, pressing which activates the wireless network.

The left side of the laptop is loaded with the following components (from left to right):

The cover of the combined compartment of the central processor and RAM hides two slots occupied by memory modules of 1024 MB each. This fact means that it is impossible to improve, namely add more RAM, because 2048 is its maximum size.

What is inside

The “engine” of ASUS Lamborghini VX1 is a dual-core Intel processor Core Duo with a T2500 rating and a clock frequency of 2.00 GHz, which is based on the Yonah core, manufactured using a 65 nm process technology, which has a 2 MB L2 cache combined for two cores.

Intel Core Duo T2500 in different power modes

In addition to the traditionally used Enhanced Intel SpeedStep power saving technology, thanks to which software And Laptop BIOS gain control over the CPU clock frequency multiplier, reducing it at times of incomplete load; there is Dynamic Power Coordination technology on board, with the help of which the cores can independently change power consumption depending on the current load on the processor, until the second core into a state of Deep Sleep, in other words, minimal energy consumption. Dynamic Cache Sizing technology is also used - “dynamically resizing the cache memory”, which disables idle blocks. For a more detailed look at the device Intel processors Core Duo should refer to the following material - " Review of the Centrino Duo mobile platform".

The NAPA platform also includes wireless network adapter Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG and Intel Calistoga 945PM chipset. NMCs of the 945 family have the ability to work with high-speed DDR2 SODIMM modules, thus increasing throughput memory and reducing energy consumption. The i945PM logic set is equipped with a bus PCI Express x16 for connecting an external video card. The ICH7-M chip is used as the south bridge, the north bridge is connected to it using a specialized Direct Media Interface (DMI) bus. The Southbridge supports one Parallel ATA port, two Serial ATA ports, eight USB 2.0 ports and has an integrated sound solution Intel High Definition Audio. In addition, it supports six PCI Express x1 lanes, which are supposed to be used for connecting external devices. More detailed technical specifications of the platform can be found at manufacturer's website.

Intel 945PM Chipset

In addition to the powerful computing engine, the ASUS Lamborghini VX1 was equipped with a discrete video adapter NVIDIA GeForce GO 7400VX with support for the TurboCache function and 128 MB of hardware video memory, made using a 0.09 micron process technology, which significantly reduces energy consumption, designed specifically for thin, light and ultraportable solutions . TurboCache allows GPU share the amount and bandwidth of allocated video memory and dynamically available system memory, thus increasing the performance and graphics memory capacity of the PC. Due to the fact that two 1 GB modules are installed in the laptop, each GeForce GO 7400VX can take up to 512 MB. The video adapter from NVIDIA uses NVIDIA technology PureVideo, which provides high-quality HD video. Another power management technology, PowerMizer 6.0, optimizes power delivery and also reduces the amount of heat generated. More detailed technical characteristics of the NVIDIA GeForce GO 7400 are summarized in the table, and they can also be viewed at manufacturer's website:

The laptop is equipped with a Seagate Momentus ST9160821A 2.5" hard drive with a spindle speed of 5400 rpm and a capacity of 160 GB. The laptop is also equipped with a MATSHITA UJ-832S optical DVD burner with the following speed characteristics:

Entry:

CD-R/RW (24x/10x);
DVD-R/RW (4x/2x);
DVD+ R/RW (4x/2.4x);
DVD+ R DL (2.4x);
DVD-RAM (2x).

Reading:

CD-R/RW (24x/10x);
DVD-ROM (8x);
DVD-R/RW (4x/4x);
DVD+ R/RW (4x/4x);
DVD+ R DL (4x);
DVD-RAM (2x).

ASUS Lamborghini VX1 uses the fastest DDR2 RAM with a frequency of 667 MHz. Both slots are easily accessible, but this accessibility is irrelevant due to the fact that the installed two modules in total exhaust the entire possible memory limit. The RAM operates in dual-channel mode, as you can see by looking at the following screenshot:

Dual-channel memory mode

During the Battery Eater Pro 2.60 test, after 30 minutes of operation in “classic” mode, temperature values were taken from the surface of the laptop with an infrared thermometer (the temperature in the room was maintained at 22 degrees). On each surface, a point with maximum temperature was sought. As a result, the following values were obtained:

LCD panel - 35 degrees;
Keyboard - 36 degrees;
Bottom surface - 39 degrees.

And because ASUS Lamborghini VX1 and ASUS V6J have the same "base", then for greater clarity, below is a comparative diagram of the heating of individual elements of laptops, from which it can be seen that the laptops are very close and according to these indicators, the minimal difference can be attributed to measurement errors.

Below is a comparison table with detailed technical characteristics tested "mobile coupe" and ASUS V6J:

Testing methodology

Before starting testing, the ASUS Lamborghini VX1 had its hard drive formatted for file storage. NTFS system, then the Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2 operating system (English version) with DirectX 9.0c package and drivers from the included disk are installed. Also additionally installed Windows Media Encoder 9.0 together with the Windows Media Player 9.0 video player program (for some tests, such as PCMark 2005 and SYSmark 2004 SE, Windows Media Player 10.0 was delivered separately).

During testing, the following parameters were set:

Energy saving services - disabled;
Sound card – disabled;
Network services - disabled;
The screen brightness is set to the maximum possible position;
The resolution of the liquid crystal matrix is maximum, 1400x1050;
"Taskbar docking" (in taskbar properties) - disabled;
"Auto-hide taskbar" - enabled;
The desktop theme is “classic”;
Background image – disabled;
Screen saver – disabled;
Exhibited low level security;
Pop-up blocking is disabled.

The exceptions are two tests: when working with PCMark 2005, the Windows XP desktop theme was returned, and for normal operation of SYSmark 2004 SE, all parameters were returned to the default state.

The tests were carried out in two modes by changing the settings of the power management circuit. The first part took place with mains power (the “Always On” setting – in the Russian language Windows versions), which ensures maximum performance of the laptop computer, and the battery life is correspondingly minimal). The second part is when powered by a rechargeable battery (the "Max Battery" setting ("Battery Saving" - in the Russian version of Windows), in this case the battery life is maximum).

Two groups of tests were used:

Group 1 – tests to measure system performance, which in turn consist of three subgroups:

Synthetic tests (SiSoftware Sandra 2005, SiSoftware Sandra 2007, PCMark 2004 1.3.0, PCMark 2005 1.1.0);
Performance tests in office and multimedia applications (SYSmark 2004 SE, Business Winstone 2004, Multimedia Content Creation Winstone 2004);
Gaming performance tests (3DMark 2003 3.6.0, 3DMark 2005 1.2.0, 3DMark 2006 1.0.2, Quake3, Quake4, Unreal Tournament 2003).

2nd group, consisting of one indicative test to determine the battery life of a laptop computer using the Battery Eater Pro 2.60 battery.

The Battery Eater Pro 2.60 test contains three operating modes:

Classic mode – uniform maximum load on the system (Classic);

And idle mode.

The first two perform the basic manipulations provided by the program. In "idle mode", in which the battery life of a laptop is measured without any load from Battery Eater Pro 2.60, a DVD movie was launched.

Those who follow laptop reviews on our website will immediately notice the changes" test bench". The first thing that has changed is the use of the new diagnostic package SiSoftware Sandra 2007 (the program is designed for remote analysis, testing and diagnostics of computers, servers, PDAs, smartphones, small home and office networks, as well as for enterprise networks). The 2007 version of the utility has an updated interface with improved functionality. The main features are as follows:

Supports 3 platforms (Win32 x86, Win64 x64, WinCE ARM) in a single installer;
13 benchmarks developed separately for each platform;
34 modules with detailed information about system components;
Official support for a huge number of different devices, thanks to direct cooperation with Intel, AMD, ATI, SiS and VIA;
Versions in 6 languages (Russian, English, German, French, Italian, Dutch) in a single installation program;
Lite version (free for personal and educational use).

The SiSoftware Sandra 2005 version of the program will be used for now, but as statistics on the latest version become available, it will be excluded from testing.

The SYSmark 2004 SE benchmark has also been added, aimed at identifying the complex performance of the system under various typical load patterns. It simulates user work aimed at solving specific problems in several of the most common applications, taking into account the possibility of multi-threaded work. At the output, the benchmark produces several indices showing system performance demonstrated under various activity scenarios. SYSMark 2004 SE is primarily positioned as a benchmark application for determining the performance of desktop systems. For this reason, this package also includes applications that are not quite typical as a typical workload for mobile computers. That is why the benchmark results will be presented in “expanded” form, focusing separately on each type of load it creates.

Added a synthetic package PCMark 2005, which continues the tradition of complex benchmarks of this line, like PCMark04, it uses work elements as tests real applications, which increases its value compared to “fully synthetic” benchmarks. A series of eleven mandatory tests of the performance of various system components leads to the calculation of the overall result in certain conventional units ("PCMarks"), based on the famous cartoon, traditionally called "parrots" in the countries of the former "union". PCMark 2005 has functions for testing the system load when working with HD video, encoding audio information, and advanced capabilities for testing multi-threaded load on the processor and hard drive. The overall benchmark result is obtained by the formula: PCMark Score = 87 x (Geometric Average of Main Tests), where the geometric mean is calculated as (result 1 x result 2 x ...) / number of results.

The update also affected another Futuremark Corporation product - 3Dmark. Now 3DMark 2005 and 3DMark 2006 will take part in testing laptops with discrete video solutions. What changes have occurred in 3DMark 2005 compared to the previous version: refusal to use Shader Model 1.x, using exclusively Shader Model 2.0x/3.0; full compatibility with Shader Model 2.0; the complexity of game tests has been increased (more than a million polygons per frame); using normal maps. New in 3DMark 2006: support for HDR, Uniform Shadow Maps, support for multi-core CPUs and focus on using Shader Model 3.0, although not completely - 2 out of four graphics tests work within the framework of Shader Model 2.0. 3DMark 2001SE Pro will be used as before, only for integrated video.

And on top of all of the above, will take part in testing a new version Quake4 games are on par with the old one. Because Since the special demo video did not exist in nature at the time the tests began, it was made with my own hands and will be used in every subsequent laptop testing, thereby making it possible to compare the performance of different systems under absolutely equal conditions.

Testing

According to the established tradition, testing is opened by synthetic SiSoftware Sandra tests only now in two versions 2005 and 2007 and two PCMarks 2004 and 2005.
SiSoftware Sandra displays information about the computer and tests both the system as a whole and its individual components. PCMark is designed to measure computer performance when working with office and related applications, including tests to determine overall performance and the performance of individual subsystems (central processor, memory, graphics capabilities, disk subsystem).

First, let's talk about the good old SiSoftware Sandra 2005 and PCMark 2004. The results of processor tests are quite natural and predictable, they are completely proportional to the frequencies of the “hearts” installed in laptop computers. When switching to a rechargeable battery, thanks to artificial throttling when using the “battery saving” mode and plus under the influence of enabled energy saving systems, processor frequencies drop to the minimum possible level of 1 GHz, as a result of which the values with a tiny error also become equal. File system both laptop computers are actually at the same level, because hard drives have similar characteristics, with the exception of capacity. The memory system of the ASUS Lamborghini VX1 benefits slightly due to the use of more RAM operating in dual-channel mode. This fact, in addition to the higher frequency of the video adapter, also played a plus in PCMark 2004 when testing the graphics subsystem, giving a greater opportunity to fully use TurboCache in the NVIDIA GeForce GO 7400VX.

As for SiSoftware Sandra 2007 and PCMark 2005, the test results are very decent in both power supply cases and behave similarly to previous versions of the programs, so it makes no sense to repeat the above, since Since data statistics for these applications have not been developed, they are a kind of “starting point” for subsequent testing.

The Business Winstone 2004 test is designed to determine computer performance when working with office applications (Microsoft Internet Explorer, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Microsoft Project, Microsoft Power Point, Microsoft Front Page, WinZip, Norton AntiVirus Professional Edition). Business Winstone launches several tasks at once, thereby implementing multitasking. The Multimedia Content Creation Winstone 2004 test is designed to determine computer performance when working with multimedia applications (Microsoft Windows Media Encoder, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, NewTek LightWave 3D, Steinberg WaveLab, Macromedia Dreamweaver MX, Macromedia Director MX).

The results obtained during the tests Business Winstone 2004 and Multimedia Content Creation Winstone 2004 are summarized in a table and, for greater clarity, presented in diagrams:

Due to the fact that the ASUS Lamborghini VX1 and ASUS V6J systems are very similar, the obtained values are predictable and directly close to their configurations. Due to the fact that the tested “car” has a more powerful “engine” installed together with dual-channel memory and a slightly more powerful GPU, it benefits slightly when powered from the mains. The results obtained when changing the power supply to the battery fall in accordance with the drop in frequencies and become almost identical, minus the same measurement errors.

Now let's test our "racing" laptop in the SYSmark 2004 SE benchmark, as mentioned above, which simulates the user's work in popular applications and actively using multitasking. And because SYSMark 2004 SE is primarily positioned as a test application for determining the performance of desktop systems, for this reason the benchmark results will be presented in an “expanded” form, focusing separately on each type of load it creates.

In this case, we simulate the work of a user who, in the 3ds max 5.1 package, renders in bmp file image and at the same time prepares web pages in Dreamweaver MX. After these operations are completed, 3D animation is created in vector graphics format.

Because the system is loaded with quite “heavy” tasks that are demanding on the processor’s computing resources, and the ASUS Lamborghini VX1 has a 2.0 GHz “stone” Intel Core Duo T2500 installed, then the result obtained during the test is completely justified and directly corresponds to the CPU level. When changing power to the battery, for the same reasons as in previous tests, the values drop by almost half, exactly like the core frequency.

2D Creation simulates the work of a user in Premiere 6.5, who creates a video from several videos in raw format and separate audio tracks. While waiting for the operation to complete, the user also prepares an image in Photoshop 7.01, modifying the existing image and saving it to disk. After completing the creation of the video, the user edits it and adds special effects to After Effects 5.5.

All three applications used are optimized for multithreading. And, consequently, the result shown by the dual-core architecture completely satisfies the tasks assigned to it.

This benchmark simulates the work of a professional webmaster. The pseudo-user will unzip the website content from the archive while using Flash MX to open the exported 3D vector graphics movie. Then the same user modifies it by including other pictures and optimizes it for faster animation. The final video with special effects is compressed using Windows Media Encoder 9 for broadcast over the Internet. The created website is then built in Dreamweaver MX, and in parallel the system is scanned for viruses using VirusScan 7.0.

Again we obtain values proportional to the frequency of the “engine” installed under the “hood”.

In this case, when measuring performance, a scenario quite typical for the average user is used. A certain person receives a letter in Outlook 2002, which contains a set of documents in a zip archive. While the received files are scanned for viruses using VirusScan 7.0, the user views the email and makes notes in Outlook calendar, then opens the corporate website and some documents when Internet help Explorer 6.0.

The result is quite high, even if the power supply scheme is changed, the drop in half does not occur for one simple reason: in this benchmark, the processor frequency is not as relevant as in previous applications.

In this benchmark, a hypothetical user edits text in Word 2002 and also uses Dragon NaturallySpeaking 6 to convert the audio file to Text Document, which is already converted into pdf format using Acrobat 5.0.5. Then, when using the generated document, a presentation is created in PowerPoint 2002.

Here again the high result when powered from the mains is justified; when switching to a battery, the processor frequency drops.

The operating model for the final SYSmark 2004 SE application is as follows: the user opens a database in Access 2002 and runs a series of queries. Documents are archived using WinZip 8.1. The query results are exported to Excel 2002, and a chart is built based on them.

However, in this test the result is somewhat underestimated. When powered by battery, the values take on their true size.

For the reason that both laptop computers that came to us are equipped with discrete graphics solutions NVIDIA GeForce GO 7400 only with different frequencies GPU, testing in 3Dmark was carried out in three versions: 3DMark 2003 3.6.0, 3DMark 2005 1.2.0 and 3DMark 2006 1.0.2.

The 3DMark test program is a set of three-dimensional scenes based on its own graphics engine that load the video subsystem in various ways.

The results shown in 3DMark 2003, where we can compare two video solutions from NVIDIA with a difference in name of two letters VX, indicate a slight advantage in favor of ASUS Lamborghini VX1. But you can’t definitely give all the awards to the more productive NVIDIA GeForce GO 7400 VX, because Don’t forget that our today’s hero has twice as much RAM, and it also works in dual-channel mode, which certainly also affects the obtained values.

As for 3DMark 2005 and 3DMark 2006, the results are quite acceptable and they can also be considered a “reference point” for future comparisons and analyses. It is also worth noting that the parameters of the graphics solutions were set to the level of maximum performance and for this reason there was no noticeable decline in the performance of the video cards when changing the power mode.

Testing of a laptop computer in Quake3 was carried out in two modes for adjusting image quality:

The first mode settings are 640x480; 16 bit; Lighting: Vertex; Detail: Low; Texture Quality: 16 bit; Texture Filter: Bilinear;
Second mode settings - 1024x768; 32 bit; Lighting: Lightmap; Detail: High; Texture Quality: 32 bit; Texture Filter: Trilinear.

In Quake4 there was one scheme - General quality: High; Resolution: 1024x768; Format 4:3; Multi-core optimization: Yes. All other settings were set to default.

As in previous gaming tests in Quake3, the victory is for the NVIDIA GeForce GO 7400 with the addition of VX. It is simply impossible to evaluate and compare the results obtained in Quake4, because The demo video, due to the absence of the latter in nature today, was created independently, and, therefore, it will be possible to compare high or low levels of values only according to subsequent testing, i.e. the current results are nothing more than a “baseline”. However, we immediately note that the difference in the values from the network and the battery is not large, the reason for this is the set maximum performance of the video card.

In the latest test for today, aimed at the performance of the graphics subsystem when powered from the mains, the ASUS Lamborghini VX1 is half a length ahead. Processor frequency coupled with dual-channel RAM and slightly best video card They confidently do their job. However, as soon as the plug was removed from the socket, the results were almost equal, which is not surprising, because The systems are almost aligned with each other. As a summary of the series of tests above, one thing can be said is that the ASUS Lamborghini VX1 fully justifies the status of a “racing coupe”, although not the fastest in the world, but far from the last.

To conclude the testing, we use the Battery Eater Pro 2.60 program, which shows the maximum distance in kilometers (hours and minutes, of course) that our Lamborghini can travel with the tank filled to the brim.

Testing was carried out at maximum screen brightness in the following modes:

Classic mode – uniform maximum load on the system;
Reader mode - emulation of reading a book (in the Reader's test mode, rewinding is done one page at a time every 15 seconds);
Movie viewing mode (the movie was launched in Idle mode).

I must say a very, very impressive result for such a “sporty” configuration. All other things being equal, even the slightly weaker and theoretically less voracious rival ASUS V6J is left behind. Our “car” had enough fuel for a longer distance, almost four hours of non-stop measured movement, or 2.5, but at maximum speed.

Below are battery discharge diagrams for different operating modes:

Advantages and disadvantages of ASUS Lamborghini VX1

Advantages:

Bright design of a "racing" laptop;
Good performance in any application;
An abundance of wireless interfaces and the presence of a Bluetooth “rodent” with Lamborghini symbols;
Rich equipment;
Using a number of proprietary technologies from ASUSTeK to improve the image;
Long battery life.

Flaws:

"Mirror" display;
Stainless cover;
Poor visibility of system indicators when the top cover is open;
High cost, but are Lamborghinis cheap? ;O)

Conclusion

The ASUS-Lamborghini team has something to contrast with Acer-Ferrari, which has already been united by several years of joint titanic work in the field of “royal racing”. It seems that Ferruccio Lamborghini would now be happy with the thought that a racing car, even in the guise of a laptop computer with his name on the “hood”, to say the least tickles the nerves, is a worthy competitor to his old enemy in the person of Scuderia Ferrari, surpassing him even on a laptop field.

Through the joint efforts of designers and engineers from the computer giant ASUSTeK and one of the leaders in the sports car industry, Automobili Lamborghini managed to bring to life a very adventurous idea - to create a racing laptop. ASUS Lamborghini VX1, with all the bright and aggressive elements of the exterior, turned out to be a completely balanced “machine” in the Premium segment, with a rich “inner world” and, as a result, excellent performance. Plus, a nice bonus: the laptop turned out to be one of the most “long-lasting” autonomously in its class. A serious disadvantage, of course, is the price, but who has ever met a cheap Lamborghini. ;o)

ASUS Lamborghini VX1 has already appeared on sale with a “bored engine”, namely an updated dual-core NAPA platform. This means that it is based on the core of Merom, and not Yonah, like our “guest” today. All that remains is to wait for a response from Acer-Ferrari, already made in the form of presentations and announcements of the new “red car”, which will never leave the pits, making its potential owners nervous. All this suggests that the confrontation between Automobili Lamborghini and Scuderia Ferrari is only gaining momentum, and we will be unwitting spectators of these laptop “races”.
