Working daily with such a complex device as Personal Computer, we often forget about the simplest settings that significantly increase the convenience and speed of performing routine tasks. We are talking about setting up a device for manual input of information - a computer mouse.

In this article we will tell and show you how to properly configure a mouse for yourself in Windows 7, 8 and 10.

Like any governing body, computer mouse universal for use by anyone. However, in some cases it is necessary to “adjust” the parameters based on the user’s preferences. Some people prefer high cursor sensitivity, while others prefer a non-standard pointer. These and other parameters are configurable basic means Windows. By correctly setting up the mouse on your computer, you can achieve more high speed in working with routine tasks, for example, in office programs.

IN separate group Users should include gamers, since gaming mice can have from 4 to 10 or more buttons, providing maximum control over the situation in dynamic games. For each button you need to specify a command using special utilities, usually included with the manufacturer. We will also touch on this type of software in our material.

Setting up mouse buttons

Mouse settings in Windows 7 and 10 are no different from those in older versions of the operating system. There is only a slight difference in the display of the main parameters.

To get to the settings menu you need to follow the path “Start/Control Panel/Hardware and Sound/Mouse”(for Windows 7) or “Start/Settings/Devices/Mouse”(for Windows 10).

The settings menu and its first tab appear before us - "Mouse Buttons".

First parameter “Change button assignments” necessary for people who use the mouse with their left hand. It is indispensable for left-handed people and people with limited mobility.

"Double-click speed" allows you to set the time interval between the first and second click of the left button. To adjust the mouse, use the speed slider, and to check, use the folder control icon.

"Mouse Button Stuck" makes it easier to drag and select multiple objects on the desktop and in Explorer. This option was originally created to simplify work with outdated mechanical mice equipped with a rubberized metal ball. However, some users still use it now.

We adjust the wheel (SCM)

All modern optical mice equipped special element control - wheel. It is used to scroll web pages, documents in text editor, for quick navigation in file manager and other tasks. It also combines the function of the third (middle) button when you press it.

Let's look at the second tab of mouse properties "Wheel".

"Vertical scrolling" allows you to set the number of lines that will be scrolled per step of rotating the wheel. A value that is too small will force the user to scroll harder with the SCM, while a large value (or value "on screen") - will reduce the accuracy of object search. You need to find a “golden mean” for yourself, which by default is 3 lines.

Option "Horizontal scrolling" relevant for devices with joystick-type wheels that allow you to move horizontally through text and pages. The setup principle is similar to the previous point.

Setting pointer parameters

All actions and mouse movements we perform are displayed on the screen in the form of a graphic symbol - a cursor. It appears on the screen immediately after connecting the device to the computer and remains active in Windows environment.

To configure the mouse cursor, go to the tab "Pointer Options".

Paragraph "Move" is a slider for adjusting the speed at which the pointer moves across the screen. Too much speed can make mouse control inaccurate, and too little speed can make mouse control inconvenient. You can also set the accuracy of the mouse sensitivity settings on Windows 7,8 and 10 by checking the appropriate box.

« Initial position in the dialog box" allows you to bind the cursor to the window control buttons at the moment it opens. This rather outdated option was useful for mechanical mice. It reduces the number of movements of the device on the surface and, accordingly, the rotation of its ball.

"Visibility" includes three parameters:

  • "Show mouse trail"- a trail will follow the pointer, reminiscent of system braking. This solution makes it easier for people with visual impairments to work at the computer.
  • "Hide the pointer while typing"- when typing on the keyboard, the cursor will disappear and then appear automatically. The option is enabled by default.
  • "Indicate the location of the pointer when clickedCtrl" makes it easier to find the arrow on the screen. After pressing the key, an animated image of a circle will appear around the cursor.

Changing the appearance of the cursor

After we have figured out the button and sensor parameters and changed the mouse sensitivity, we can move on to changing appearance pointer on the screen. Some users strive to make it practical and strict, while others want unique non-standard option. Often, modified pointers come with themes for Windows 7, 8, 10.

To change and change the icon, go to the tab "Pointers".

In point "Scheme" contains images of icons from those installed in Windows themes. From the menu "Settings" the user can choose the size, color and shape of the pointer in each specific situation or action, for example, when the system is busy or working with text. Button "Review" allows you to select a separate cursor image file. The last two parameters are enabled by default, and are responsible for enabling the shadow cast on the screen by the arrow and permission to change standard icon custom from another topic.

Additional settings

In the mouse properties menu, we did not touch the last tab "Equipment", since it is responsible for checking the functionality of the device and updating the driver, which is rarely used in practice. However, it has one useful option that allows you to wake the PC from standby mode by moving the mouse. It's located along the way "Hardware/Properties/Power Management".

To facilitate the work of people with disabilities, the system offers a special plan for setting up the manipulator. It's located in the menu “Start\Control Panel/ Special abilities/Change mouse settings".

Parameter "Mouse Pointers" serves as a highly targeted version of the tab "Pointers" discussed above. It is necessary for users with visual impairments.

The next item allows you to use the numeric keypad to move the cursor around the screen, thereby replacing the mouse. This option is indispensable for people with severe motor impairment.

Last parameter "Simplified window management" in demand among many users who want to disable automatic window alignment. Here you can activate auto-switching between windows by hovering the mouse cursor over them.

X-Mouse Button Control

After review basic settings computer mouse in Windows, we got to non-standard solutions in the form of third-party software. We are talking about reassigning the buttons of gaming devices (remapping) using special utilities. They will only be useful if your mouse has several additional buttons. There is no point in reconfiguring non-game models.

The X-Mouse Button Control utility acts as a universal option for inexpensive game controllers and “no-name” models from the Middle Kingdom. In it you can create from one to five layers of action bindings, for example, in games, player, explorer. You can also save new commands based on hold time and button combinations. There is also a cursor sensitivity adjustment scale with many add-ons. The current profile is saved separate file in the directory with the program, from where it can be copied and used on another computer without any problems.

To start using X-Mouse Button Control:

Main right part The window is reserved for buttons and functions associated with them. Above it are tabs with layers of settings and menus with additional options. On the left is a list of saved profiles and action buttons above them.

Among the features of the program, we highlight the following advantages:

  • ease of installation;
  • the presence of a Russian-language shell;
  • several layers of settings in one profile;
  • concise interface;
  • support for all known (and even unknown) device models;
  • free license.

Among the shortcomings we note:

  • conglomeration various parameters without explanations for them;
  • There are no options for backlit buttons and the mouse body.

Manufacturer's software (Razer Synapse 2.0)

It's time to consider the most advanced solutions for customizing your computer mouse. Most well-known brands of gaming devices release their own software to maximize the implementation of their capabilities. Such programs only work with licensed computer mice, and have many variations in control and backlight settings. As an example, we will take the Razer Synapse 2.0 utility for the company’s devices of the same name.

Razer Synapse 2.0 is a cloud-based utility for configuring Razer gaming devices. When you first start the system automatically detects the mouse model and selects required driver To her. All parameters saved by the user remain on the remote server, which allows you to customize the control on any PC.

We will skip the long story about how to download and work with it in full, and go straight to brief overview options for working with mice:

Calibration in automatic mode can be produced if you have a branded mat from Razer, you just need to indicate its name.

Manual calibration is used in all other cases. It is extremely simple and takes only a few seconds.

We noted the following advantages of Razer Synapse 2.0:

  • “Friendly” beautiful interface in Russian with a clear description;
  • There are many settings that are not available in standard programs;
  • Thanks to cloud service saved settings can be applied on any PC;
  • Syncs the settings of all connected gaming devices (provided they are from Razer).

We didn't find any flaws, but it's a little disappointing that the software doesn't work with mice from other manufacturers. But this is understandable because the company’s goal is to distribute its products on the market.

Conclusion

In our new article, we showed you how detailed it can be to configure the simplest computer device - a mouse. We hope that after reading this you will not need to search additional information.

For a comfortable game and work on a PC, it is enough to limit standard means Windows. This is usually enough for owners of standard and gaming devices with a couple of additional buttons.

If you are the owner of a branded gaming device with a large set of buttons and rockers, then be sure to use the utility from the manufacturer. Only it can reveal the full functionality of the mouse.

In online shooters, the most important thing depends on the sensitivity of the mouse: accuracy and speed of aiming. Thanks to the opportunity fine tuning gaming mice players can customize the manipulator and start a career as a professional fighter in their favorite game.

An insurmountable obstacle that can get in the way is a lack of understanding of the terms associated with setting up a mouse and not knowing which settings will be optimal for you. There are no standard mouse sensitivity settings for online shooters, but we will try to highlight key features and recommendations for them. This assumes you have a gaming mouse. Otherwise, you will not be able to get a real continuation of the hand. Setting up a mouse is carried out in several stages, all of which complement each other.

1) Sensitivity and acceleration settings in Windows

We need in the mouse properties (Start -> Control Panel -> Mice) set the pointer movement speed slider to the middle (Pointer Options tab) and disable the increased accuracy of setting the indicator so that Windows does not in any way affect the movement speed and does not allow the manipulator to skip pixels. That's it for setting up the mouse in operating system completed.

2) Configuring the mouse via software

It's time to move on to the most important part of setting up a mouse - adjusting sensitivity through the software that comes with the device. As an example, the author of the article uses gaming mouse Razer DeathAdder Chroma. To configure this mouse, use the program Razer Synapse. The most important thing for us is to adjust the DPI characteristic (how many points on the screen the mouse will pass when moving an inch on the mousepad) and again disable all kinds of software acceleration (we don’t need to skip pixels when moving the mouse). Of course, everyone chooses the DPI based on personal preferences, but this can get confusing.

For online shooters, it is recommended to use a low DPI value: in most cases it will do 800 DPI. Professional players use an even smaller value, but this may seem too inconvenient if you are not used to it. The lower the DPI value, the more you need to move the mouse to get from edge to edge of the screen. Therefore, a lower value means more accurate and accurate shooting, but more complex control. The higher the DPI, the less you need to move the mouse, but too high a value can make the game completely impossible - the crosshair will twitch, and precise aiming will cause inconvenience and even strain. There is an opinion among inexperienced players that the higher the DPI of a mouse, the better. This is a misconception if we take into account playing online shooters.

It's good if the mouse settings are included in the supplied software allows you to separately change the DPI on both the X and Y axis. We recommend trying to reduce the DPI on the Y axis relative to the X axis by 30-50 percent. In my case, I managed to find an interesting combination 800x500 and 800x600. After all, in fact, vertical mouse movement in online shooters is done less frequently and not as intensely as horizontal movement. In addition, this will prevent sudden sharp movements of the camera up or down (if the mouse was accidentally moved).

Also, if your mouse supports several DPI settings and switching between them while playing using a button, then you can safely experiment and enter different meanings to determine the optimal one. As a result, your mouse will have settings built into it that will work the same on any computer. You can't achieve this without using a gaming mouse. This is why in eSports it is common to come to lans with your own devices.

3) Adjusting mouse sensitivity inside the game

In almost every online shooter you can make additional settings mouse sensitivity. Moreover, this can usually be done both for shooting from the hip and for shooting through the sight. You should select these values after you have charged your gaming mouse with the settings from the first and second steps. A good step is to check your hotkeys for changes to mouse sensitivity while in-game. Typically these are the "[" and "]", "" or "-" and "+" keys. You should not ignore these settings. No professional player will play with standard settings, especially since most often they speed up the mouse or do anti-aliasing (you should definitely turn that off too).

It is also recommended to get a large play mat. In my case, I managed to get a mat from the same Razer (Razer Goliathus Speed Large). You shouldn't be skeptical about such a rug, but you can save money by purchasing a cheaper model. This will give you room for maneuver - you won’t have to huddle on a small patch, and, given that we try to lower DPI in online shooters, you will have to move the mouse intensively. In addition, such mats will last a long time.

As a rule, after purchasing a new mouse, you need to make settings for yourself: adjust the buttons and wheel, adjust sensitivity and speed, as well as color and various visual effects. Today we'll figure it out how to configure the mouse inWindows on a computer or laptop.

Instructions for setting up a mouse in Windows 7

First of all, you need to go to the mouse settings:

Alternative options to go to mouse settings:

  1. Open “Start”, go to “Control Panel”, find the “Mouse” section there;
  2. Or “Start” - “Devices and Printers”, find your mouse there and use the edit mouse button to bring up properties.

What settings should be made on the mouse?

Once you get to the settings section, a window will appear:

A little more detail on the tabs:

Mouse buttons

  1. Change button assignments - this function is useful for those who work with their left hand. The left and right buttons will switch places;
  2. Double-click speed – determines the time at which the second click will be counted as a double. If the reaction is fast, then you need to set it higher. If you don’t have time to click again in time, you should do it below.
  3. Sticky – Allows you to drag without having to hold down the mouse button.

Pointer Options

It is in this section that you can use it when working on a computer or laptop. More details:

  1. Move – the speed at which the mouse moves across the desktop;
  2. Starting position in the dialog box - by activating this function, the mouse pointer will by default immediately be located on the button that you click most often. For example, in the dialog box there are options for “Accept” and “Cancel”. If you click “Accept” more often, Windows will recognize it as the preferred option and will automatically place the cursor there when a new window appears.
  3. Visibility – here you can:
    — Enable or disable mouse trail (personally annoying me);
    — Hide the pointer when typing on the keyboard;
    — Indicate the location of the pointer when pressing Ctrl ( useful feature for those who often lose the mouse cursor on the monitor screen).

Wheel

IN this section You can configure the number of lines that will be skipped on the screen when you scroll the wheel one click vertically. And also the number of characters when scrolling horizontally.

Signposts

This section of the mouse settings is intended for the design of the cursor. There is no need to describe it, here you can select a theme, enable a shadow for the mouse, and select a cursor image.

Equipment

In this section you can see specifications mouse, drivers, etc. Nothing useful for the average user.

These are the usual settings for standard mouse. For gaming mice, it is often necessary to make additional configurations, for example, setting up macros for buttons.

Video on setting up a computer mouse on Windows

I hope the article " How to set up a mouse in Windows on a computer or laptop"was useful to you.

Many users believe that a computer mouse is a simple device that does not require any configuration. To some extent, this statement is true: after connecting the manipulator to the computer, it usually immediately starts working correctly. However, if you know how to configure your mouse, you can make working with this input device more comfortable.

Mouse options

Often a mouse is bought on a residual basis - just to have it. Only gamers, for whom it is important that the input device responds as quickly as possible, look at the characteristics of the manipulator. The sensitivity is affected by the following parameters:

  • Sensor resolution (CPI or DPI) – the higher this indicator, the better the sensitivity of the mouse. CPI represents the number of changes in cursor position recorded when the mouse moves 1 inch (2.54 cm).
  • Polling frequency – characteristic of the USB port polling rate. The higher the better.
  • Response time should be minimal.

Additional buttons, connection interface, USB interface or wireless connection– all this also affects the ease of working with the manipulator. But we will not dwell in detail on the selection rules; It’s better to take a closer look at how to adjust mouse sensitivity.

Manipulator settings

If, when you move the cursor, it starts jumping around the screen, and you have to aim for a long time to get to the desired element of the desktop, then you urgently need to open the mouse settings. The same applies to the situation when a single click triggers a double click, and instead of selecting a folder (file), you open it.

To properly configure the mouse, you need to find its operating parameters in the Control Panel. On Windows 7 you can use search bar in the Start menu.

Another way is to go to the “Control Panel” and change the display to “Large icons”. The Mouse section will be in the first column on the left.

Open the section and the “Properties: Mouse” window appears, which has five tabs. Let's look at them in detail so that it becomes clear which parameters can be changed manually.

If you are left-handed, be sure to use the button assignment exchange. When this option is enabled, the right button will begin to perform the functions of the left button, and the left button will perform the functions of the right button. That is, you will select, open and drag right click, and, for example, call context menu- left.

If problems arise with double click(you don’t have time to press twice), reduce its speed using the slider.

The required value is selected experimentally: change the speed, save the changes, check the operation.

It’s better not to turn on sticking – it’s not very convenient to work with. You can drag windows and elements without any sticking.

If you are only interested in sensitivity, then go straight to the “Pointer Options” tab. There is a slider here that allows you to set the speed of the pointer.

  1. Check the “Enable increased pointer precision” checkbox.
  2. Set the optimal driving speed.

The higher you set the speed, the more changes in cursor position will be recorded when you move the mouse one inch.

If you set the value to the minimum, it will take a lot of time and a lot of mouse movements to move the cursor from one end of the screen to the other.

If you set the maximum permissible value, then the cursor will “fly” from any, even the smallest movement of the manipulator.

Pointer trail, hide the cursor and show it when clicked Ctrl keys can not be configured: these parameters do not affect the operation of the manipulator.

Don't forget about the mouse wheel - it can also be customized to make scrolling the page vertically and horizontally as comfortable as possible. When you go to the Wheel tab, you will see two options:

  • Vertical scrolling.
  • Horizontal scrolling.

For both parameters, only one value is set - the number of scrolled lines per one turn of the wheel before clicking. By default, 3 lines are scrolled, but you can set any convenient indicator.

You can explore the “Equipment” and “Pointers” tabs yourself - there are no important mouse operation parameters in these sections. Through the “Equipment” tab, for example, the properties of the manipulator are opened (the same actions are performed through the “Device Manager”). In the “Pointers” section, you can select the type of cursor for different situations, as well as the parameters for its display.

What do you think you know about the mouse and how to configure it? Just think, it’s some kind of mouse, what’s there to configure? However, let's not rush and draw premature conclusions. In the seemingly simple task of setting up a mouse, there are several nuances that may be unknown to you. So let's talk about them.

In essence, as regards computer games, then why precision in moving the cursor (pointer) is needed is clear - otherwise it will be very difficult to hit the enemy’s head in CS or Battlefield: Bad Company 2. However, not only gamers need precision movement. Moreover, gamers actually have special mouse drivers for this, but more on that later.

Let’s take for example designers, both regular and those developing website designs. These guys often need perfect precision so that they can move the mouse pointer to select an object with pixel-by-pixel precision. In addition, this is also useful for ordinary users - for example, you wanted to take a screenshot (screenshot) - this is where accuracy is needed.

There are actually three ways to adjust pointer precision in Windows:

  • a well-known method in the mouse settings;
  • setting up cursor movement using the keyboard;
  • driver settings.

Adjusting mouse pointer precision

This is the easiest way to improve the accuracy of the mouse pointer, and it is well known to most users.

In Windows 7/Vista you need to go to the following path:

Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Mouse.

A window will open Properties: Mouse. In it we go to the tab Pointer Options and check the box Enable increased pointer accuracy. It couldn’t be simpler, the accuracy of the pointer will increase dramatically, and it will no longer dangle around the desktop like crazy.

In Windows XP, a similar window can be opened by selecting the command Start > Control Panel > Printers and Other Controls > Mouse(unless classic access is selected). Next you need to check the same box.

Setting the keyboard to move the mouse pointer

But this is more interesting and many people do not know this possibility. The mouse cursor can also be controlled from the keyboard, which is very useful for designers of all stripes when you need to move just a few pixels. In this case, the numeric keypad will be used for control.

To set up such a move in Windows 7, follow this path:

Start > Control Panel > Accessibility and click on the link Changing mouse settings in field Accessibility Center. A window like this will open.

In this window, check the box Enable keyboard pointer control and then click on the link Setting up pointer control.

A new window will open, which presents a lot of interesting parameters. Don't forget - these are parameters for moving the pointer using the keyboard and nothing else.

As you can see, there are enough parameters. Mainly you need to check the box Enable mouse pointer control from keyboard. But that is not all. Now, for this mode to work, you need to click the indicated in the field Keyboard shortcut combination, namely Alt left + Shift left + NUM LOCK. A warning will appear (can be disabled), in which we click on the button OK and the mode will be activated. You can now move your mouse pointer using the numeric keypad.

As you can see, there are other parameters in the window, where you can adjust the speed of pointer movement, select keys that can be used to accelerate or slow down movement, etc. Feel free to experiment and select the parameters that suit you best.

The same access option is available in Windows XP. Follow the path:

Start > Control Panel > Accessibility. A window will open Special abilities, in which go to the tab Mouse. Check the box Keyboard control and click on the button Settings.

A window will open Setting up keyboard pointer control. It has fewer parameters than a similar window in Windows 7, but that's enough for us :) Customize it to your liking.

Adjusting pointer precision in the mouse driver

With pointer precision using Windows and when moving using the keyboard, we have already figured it out. Things get much more interesting if you have a mouse for which a separate driver is installed.

Of course, the mouse can work without a driver, you just need to connect it, any mouse at that. However, there are a ton of cool mice available now that are primarily aimed at gamers. And they come with drivers in which just a ton of cool parameters are available.

And it comes with drivers in which you can configure a lot of interesting things. For example, the polling frequency of the mouse port, of course sensitivity in dpi, assign different actions to buttons, etc.

However, that's not all. We are talking about increasing the accuracy of the pointer. To do this, the driver window has two tabs, Sensitivity And Advanced Settings. On the tab Sensitivity you should click on the link Acceleration: ON, located at the very bottom. We will not delve into the intricacies of setting up this particular mouse - the main thing is to show the principle of setting the accuracy of the pointer.

Or, for example, the IntelliPoint driver for the Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse.

Important: If you enable precision mode in your mouse driver, disable it in Windows. This is the same checkbox in the first picture in this article. Otherwise, there may be problems with the operation of this mode. The mode implemented in the driver is usually more accurate than the mode in Windows, so this is in your best interests :)

As you can see, mouse drivers provide amazing capabilities. Moreover, these drivers differ for different types of mice, but the principle remains the same. The driver allows you to configure the mouse exactly the way you want. My hands are itching to start describing the cool new gaming mice from Razer, SteelSeries and Logitech, but we'll leave that for the next article;)
