Introduction

At the time of writing this review, the Philips W8510 smartphone is a flagship device and stands out among similar solutions, perhaps, only because of its capacious battery. However, this is sometimes enough for the attention of potential buyers to be focused precisely on such a product, since the majority of “classmates” flaunt graceful “waists” and neglect autonomous operation. As a result, we get a “slender” device that barely survives until the middle of the day.

New model from Philips has a rather “lush” shape, but boasts an excellent battery life. In addition, the W8510 uses a powerful MediaTek MT6589 chipset and a cool HD IPS display. Together, the result is a very interesting gadget for those who are not looking for a miniature phone.

Design, dimensions, control elements

The Philips W8510 smartphone has a classic appearance touch phone: The body is rectangular in shape, with slightly convex top and bottom edges. The sides are not beveled; the top and bottom of the case have a slight slope towards the rear panel. In general, there is nothing to complain about in the ergonomics of the design - everything is done wisely, Philips are great in this regard, they do not deviate from the accepted quality standard - strictly, but tastefully.

The device screen is protected by glass. The site does not say which one, regular or all the same Gorilla Glass. In any case, I note that after a month of use there was not a single scratch left on the display. However, on the surface (as I took it out of the box) a rather wide grid is noticeable: as if a hot fryer was placed on the display and then for a long time didn't wipe it. Unfortunately, these marks cannot be removed even with the help of special cleaning products for equipment. The touchscreen grid looks different - it is thinner and visible only from a certain angle.

A metal insert runs along the perimeter of the case, capturing the contour of the earpiece hole (similar to the iPhone 5). On the front side it rises slightly above the body, protecting the screen from external influences. The sides are smoothly polished. In my opinion, it looks stylish and emphasizes the elegant contours of the case.

The back side consists of two parts: the top is removable, the bottom is not. The lid is made of durable semi-gloss dark blue plastic. Fingerprints remain on it, they are noticeable, but erased easily. Over a long period of testing, the socket was not scratched, which can be considered a definite plus.

There are some minor flaws with the assembly, or maybe I just didn’t get the highest quality sample. The fact is that when you shake the smartphone, you feel like something is loose inside, judging by its massiveness - the battery. Probably, the developers did not solder it tightly, since it would be difficult to make a service replacement in the future. Otherwise, everything is fine: the device does not creak or crunch when compressed.

The Philips W8510 fits well in the hand, despite its impressive dimensions - 138x69x10.4 mm and weight of 173 grams. In general, it is not entirely clear how, for example, the LG G2 (with a 5-inch screen diagonal) was able to fit a 3000 mAh battery with a body size of 138x70x8.9 mm and a weight of 143 grams, while the Philips battery about the same, but the case is more than 2 mm thicker, the weight has increased by 30 grams. Lenovo P780 (143x73x9.9 mm, 176 g) has a 4000 mAh battery. What I mean is that the W8510 model could have been made a little lighter and more compact.

On the front panel of the device there is a speech speaker at the top; it is covered with a thin dark metal mesh. The speaker volume is high, mostly pleasant low and mid frequencies are heard, the interlocutor can be heard legibly and clearly. However, holding the device near your ear is not very pleasant, since the sharp edges sometimes scratch the ear. Pay attention to this point when you choose your phone. It is possible that a metal frame will not cause you discomfort.

To the right of the speaker is the ambient light sensor, to the left is the proximity sensor and front-camera. Below the screen are touchscreen “Back”, “Home” and “Menu”. Illuminated with white light. On the left side there is a special switch for energy-saving mode and back to normal. On the right are two separate metal volume control buttons. Easy to feel and easy to handle. The microphone is located on the bottom, 3.5 mm audio output, micro-USB and a thin power button are on the top. At the back is a recessed camera, a single-section flash and a speaker. speakerphone(there is a small bump on the body so that the speaker is not covered when the device is placed on a horizontal surface).

As was said at the beginning of the review, this model only removes top part back cover. Below it are two slots for regular miniSIM cards and a slot for a microSD memory card.

Display

On a smartphone Philips Xenium The W8510 uses a 4.7-inch diagonal display (physical size 58x103 mm). The resolution is 720x1280 pixels, while the density is 312 pixels per inch. The matrix is made using IPS-LCD technology; there is apparently no air gap between the matrix and the protective glass. The picture quality is one of the best among all devices costing up to 15,000 rubles. The image is clear, the colors are saturated, the viewing angles are maximum, and in case of deviations the matrix does not turn purple or turn yellow! The brightness is high, but the display fades in the sun, everything is fine during the day, the brightness can be lowered indoors. The brightness control range is average.

Battery

The Philips W8510 uses a non-removable lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery with a capacity of 3300 mAh. The manufacturer indicates that the device should operate for about 18 hours in talk mode, and about 860 hours in standby mode.

If you use the phone for about 25-30 hours, the battery will be completely discharged provided: 20-25 minutes of calls per day, 8 hours of Wi-Fi Internet use (Twitter, mail, downloading applications and installing them), about 7 hours of mobile Internet and a couple of hours of listening to music.

You can listen only to music for 65 hours, watch only video (maximum screen brightness, high volume, movie resolution - HD 720p) - just under 10 hours. If you want to play toys (like Asphalt 8), then you won’t have to save energy either - the battery will run out after only 4 hours!

The battery charges from USB within 7 hours, from network adapter in 3 – 3.5 hours.

Communication capabilities

The phone works in cellular networks 2G (GSM/GPRS/EDGE, 900/1800/1900 MHz) and 3G (900/2100 MHz). In the “SIM Card Management” settings section, you can set the name of the SIM cards, their color, and data transfer.

Available Bluetooth version 4.0 (A2DP, FTP, HFP) for file and voice transfer. Wireless available Wi-Fi connection IEEE 802.11 b/g/n. The device, of course, can be used as an access point (Wi-Fi Hotspot) or modem.

USB 2.0 (High-Speed) is used for file transfer and data synchronization.

There were no connection problems, Wi-Fi sensitivity was high: for example, at a distance of 5 meters (behind a wall) from the W8510 router, it confidently showed 1-2 risks out of 4. During testing, no connection interruptions or glitches with network loss were observed.

Memory and memory card

This model has 1 GB of RAM. About 500 MB of this volume is free. Typical indicator. Built-in 4 GB of Flash memory: 1.7 GB for data storage, just under 1 GB for installing applications. In the settings, you can switch the location where information is saved either to internal memory or to a microSD memory card (up to a maximum of 32 GB).

Camera

The device was equipped with two camera modules: a main one of 8 MP, a front one of 1.3 MP. There is a single-section LED flash. The maximum photo resolution is 3264x2448 pixels, video - 1920x1080 pixels at 30 frames per second. The main camera aperture is F2.4, the focal length is 35 mm, the front camera is F2.8.

This model uses the familiar camera module that we saw in almost all modern smartphones in early and mid-2013. The photo quality is good, but nothing more. Mainly quibbles relate to the small dynamic range and the white balance shift to red shades.

Videos are recorded in FullHD resolution, the quality is very good: high detail, no blurring or motion artifacts, the sound is clear (mono). The only annoying thing is that the image is greatly enlarged, as if it was “zoomed in” 5 times.

Performance

The Philips Xenium W8510 uses the MediaTek MT6589 chipset - 4 cores, each with a frequency of 1.2 GHz. I won’t go into detail, since now almost every second smartphone under 15,000 rubles is equipped with this particular chip - it’s productive and consumes little energy.

Performance tests (Quadrant, Antutu, Anomaly 2 Benchmark:

Software platform

Acts as an operating system Google Android version 4.2.2. During testing, a 60 MB update arrived (Philips_W8510_1336_V09_RU). The description says that it eliminates some minor issues.

Multimedia

Music player. Standard music player, familiar to everyone from the “naked” Android 4.xx. Equalizer presets: normal, classic, dance, flat, folk, heavy metal and so on. The “own” five-band equalizer is configured from 60 Hz to 14 kHz. There are two sliders: Bass Boost and 3D Effect.

The sound quality in the headphones is excellent (a little more “bass” would be great), and the volume is very high – it “rocks” almost all the headphones I have for testing.

The volume of the ringing speaker is average. If the Xenium W8510 is placed back side down, the speaker does not close, so the volume does not drop. If you close it with your finger, the volume will decrease by 90%, i.e. practically nothing will be heard.

FM radio. The receiver operates at frequencies 87.5 – 107.8 MHz. RDS is supported, the broadcast is recorded in 3gpp format.

Video player. There is a separate player. Understands MP4, 3GP and AVI, but not all audio codecs. Any permission “eats”.

Conclusion

The quality of communication was not satisfactory: the signal level is not bad even in difficult conditions reception. The vibration alert is of average strength (probably due to the large size of the device) and is only noticeable in internal pockets.

If you are looking for a reliable smartphone without unnecessary frills (ultra-thin body, replaceable color panels, light weight, etc.), which has high performance, a very high-quality screen, and a capacious battery, then I advise you to pay attention to the Philips Xenium W8510! The device really makes a positive impression due to the use of high-quality materials (durable plastic, metal and glass). I think it will be of interest to people 40+ years old, because, as it seems to me, at this age you pay less attention to decorations and value quality and style more.

Roman Belykh (

At the time of its release, Xenium was a flagship device. Thanks to a set of impressive features, it stood out well against its closest competitors. Although Xenium played a significant role in the phone, probably only enough capacious battery. This decision saved the company more than once, and potential buyers made their choice in favor of this device. Using the example of the Philips W8510 Xenium smartphone, we can see that sometimes it is enough just to increase the source capacity battery life, so that people pay attention to it, forgetting about competing devices. It is interesting that the companies that produced similar devices relied specifically on appearance and dimensions. Therefore, it was the Philips W8510 Xenium that became the leader. After all, it is much more practical to have a smartphone that will work longer, and not just delight you with its shape.

Brief technical specifications

(the price in the official store is about 8,500 Russian rubles) is equipped with an operating system of the Android family. More specifically, this is version 4.2, which users call “Jeli bin”. The screen diagonal is 4.7 inches. Thanks to a similar solution, the Philips Xenium W8510, the price of which ranges from 8 to 9 thousand rubles, is not bulky, but not ultra-compact. The same golden mean that many users are looking for.

If we talk about the quality of the picture display, then it is displayed on the screen in HD mode. This is 720 by 1280 pixels. The smartphone has an eight-megapixel main camera.

The processor operates at a clock frequency of 1200 megahertz. By the way, the chipset has four cores. The volume of built-in flash memory is only four gigabytes. RAM - 1024 MB. In general, as we can see, the characteristics turn out to be quite average, but they are quite enough to maintain stable performance and use the device in multitasking mode with virtually no freezes or lags.

Additional options include support for two SIM cards. They should not be processed according to micro or nano standards. The highlight of the Philips Xenium W8510 phone, the characteristics of which we are currently describing, is the battery, whose capacity is 3300 milliamps per hour. According to the manufacturer, this parameter provides eighteen hours of continuous calls in third generation cellular networks.

Contents of delivery

Included as standard Philips phone Xenium W8510, Charger for it, a cable for synchronization with personal computer, laptop or OTG adapter (MicroUSB - USB 2.0 wire), wired stereo headset, as well as a film to protect the display. The manufacturer's concern for the safety of the screens of manufactured devices is simply touching, of course. The case for Philips Xenium W8510 is not included in the factory package; you will have to purchase it in the store for an additional fee. However, you will spend less than a thousand, since this accessory for the device is not that expensive.

Appearance

Philips Xenium W8510, whose screen has a diagonal of 4.7 inches, has a classic appearance. The smartphone is made in a rectangular shape. Both its upper and lower edges have small convexities, barely perceptible to the eye. The designers did not dare to bevel the sides, but there is still a slight slope closer to the rear panel at the top and bottom. It’s unlikely to find fault with the device’s ergonomics in general. Everything was done modestly and without frills, but wisely and according to unwritten rules. By the way, this company’s approach is typical for many devices. The quality standard exists, and designers and engineers stubbornly continue to follow it. which you will find at the end of the review, can be described as a smartphone made in accordance with strict standards, but at the same time with a certain taste.

Screen protection

Philips Xenium W8510, whose battery, as already mentioned, is designed for 3300 milliamps per hour, is additionally protected by a glass layer. More precisely, the protection was designed exclusively for the display of this device, and not for its entire surface. It is interesting that the manufacturer has not commented on this matter. It is known that glass exists. But whether it is ordinary or created according to the standard is still unknown. However, tests have shown that even with active use, scratches appear rarely and very slowly.

When you first unbox it, you'll immediately notice the touch grid. However, its detection is possible only when the light falls at a certain angle. Nevertheless, we are not able to fix this, which means we will just have to come to terms with such a miniature drawback.

Perimeter

An insert made of metal materials passes through it. Interesting solution was used by the developers of the device: this frame immediately captures the back of the earpiece at the top of the smartphone. We can see a similar approach in the design of, for example, a phone like the iPhone 5. The insert on the front side rises above the body in some way. Why was this done? Many designers use a similar move in order to protect the device screen from physical influences from the outside. Imagine that you placed the device face down on a horizontal surface. If there is no elevation at the frame, then the smartphone will lie directly on it with the screen. Accordingly, abrasions and even scratches may occur. From the side you can see that the frame has been sanded. This solution makes the appearance of the device stylish, simultaneously emphasizing the elegance of the body as a whole.

Back part

The back side can be divided into two parts at once. The first of them is removable, while the second (lower) is not. The manufacturer made the lid from fairly durable (which cannot be ignored) semi-gloss plastic. If we talk about color, it is a dark blue shade. Fingerprints are clearly visible on the lid. However, if you regularly treat your phone and monitor it, then nothing bad will happen, since fingerprints can be erased from the semi-gloss surface as easily as possible. Again, the same tests showed that the cover has a load reserve. Mechanical stress it gives in with difficulty, and leaving scratches on it will not be very easy. These two parameters together can be called a significant advantage, which goes to Xenium’s piggy bank.

Build quality

This is where things get a little worse. If desired, you can identify a real set of minor flaws. Nevertheless, this is no longer our task, but the work of experts, and we will simply tell you what you can, if not fear, then at least expect. It is quite possible that you will be lucky and receive a sample of improved quality, since engineers and designers still took certain steps after the release of the first batch. And yet we will not rely on luck. If you shake your smartphone, you will most likely feel a slight play. Probably, it is the device’s battery that is shaking inside the device. The smartphone does not cover it tightly enough. This means that after a significant period of use you will have to contact service center to replace the battery. Or buy another device. I was pleased that there was no crunching noise when compressed.

Dimensions and dimensions

As mentioned earlier, when designing this device, experts relied on a compromise. And this decision was made and implemented more successfully than ever. The device reaches a height of 138, a width of 69, and a thickness of 10.4 millimeters. Such indicators make it possible to feel all the benefits of using a smartphone. It lies surprisingly neat and comfortable in the hand. If we try to translate this into disadvantages, we can note that the increase in battery capacity had an impact on the thickness and weight of the devices.

Arrangement of elements. Front panel

On the front side you can find the speech speaker, which is located at the very top. For additional protection, planners and designers decided to cover it with a mesh made of metal materials and camouflaged with dark-colored paint. Well, since we're talking about dynamics, let's note a good volume reserve. Almost all average and low frequencies They can be easily heard, and it won’t be difficult to understand the interlocutor’s speech even in a noisy environment from both ends of the wire. The disadvantages are sharp edges. Sometimes holding the device directly close to your ear is not particularly pleasant, and even a little painful. If you talk on the phone a lot, we advise you to pay some attention to this point. Such a drawback can cause a whole mountain of inconvenience.

To the right of the earpiece you can find a light level sensor. On the opposite side there is a proximity sensor. There is also a peephole for the front camera. We go lower, under the screen frame. Here are touch controls typical for devices running on the Android operating system. There is a white backlight, which is good news.

Left and right edges

On the left side, the user can find a switch that was added specifically to select between normal and energy-saving modes. On the opposite side there are buttons designed to change the overall volume level. They are made of metal materials. It is quite simple to distinguish these elements from each other, and you can also feel them without much difficulty. They are compressed at a standard load level, so there should be no problems with handling either.

Top and bottom ends

The last one houses the speaking microphone. That's all from the elements. But on the upper end we have a whole set of tools, if you can call them that. We are talking about a MicroUSB standard input, a 3.5 mm audio output, as well as a power control button. By the way, on the back of the phone you can see a camera whose module is literally recessed into the plane of the cover. There is also an LED flash with a high-volume sound speaker.

Under the lid

If we take off back panel, then we can detect the slots. They are designed to integrate an external MicroSD drive, as well as integrate two SIM cards.

Reviews. Advantages and disadvantages

What users who purchased can tell this model smartphone? As advantages, they usually highlight a fairly high-quality screen matrix, for example. This also usually includes its resolution. The processor also demonstrated good performance during the tests, which copes well with multitasking. Reviews indicate good, one might even say high-quality materials from which the device’s body is made. Of course, the highlight of the device is the capacious battery, which makes it possible to spend more time on the Internet, for example. The speaker has a good volume reserve, and the interlocutor's speech is intelligible. Well, we can’t help but mention the presence of two SIM card slots.

Among the shortcomings, reviews highlight the grid on the display. In later models, this disadvantage may be absent due to the timely intervention of engineers. This also includes play inside the device. This is a problem with the same battery, which could not be firmly fixed. Well, the dimensions complete the composition. This is rather a relative disadvantage, because not everyone may find it an obvious disadvantage. In general, the device turned out to be quite neat and tastefully made. The “filling” cannot boast of anything special, but it still provides above-average performance.

    1. Few glitches compared to other smartphones. Other smartphones either unexpectedly reboot during a conversation, or there are extraneous noises, or you can’t hear the interlocutor... there are no serious problems with this phone 2. The battery holds well, lasts for 2 days with active use. 3. Fast speed work 4. Excellent workmanship

Everything I wanted from a phone (well, almost everything) is in it. Communication, dual-SIM capacity, speed, screen, battery - excellent! The camera is good for its 8 megapixels. I was pleasantly surprised by the sound quality on the included headset! Never glitched.

    1. At least there is some design, it looks more expensive than what was paid for it. 2. Screen. Good stuffing for half the price of current flagships. 3. Possibility of memory expansion. 4. For me, this is also the weight of the device; there is no panic that the phone will slip out of my hands at the most inopportune moment.

    1. A very good price-quality ratio - perhaps only a few models today can compare with it. 2. Long-lasting battery - it’s funny to read how on the forums of other gadgets people “optimize” the work of the smart device, turning off everything, cutting down processes and extinguishing applications. Here 4 days of ownership - from 100% charge by the evening of 4 days it sat down to 20%. 3. Possibility of memory expansion up to 32 gigs and 2 SIM cards. 4. IPS screen - normal HD resolution and graininess is not visible at all. 5. Andryusha version 4.2.2.

I suspect there are high-voltage cables buried there, and the EMR from them throws him off balance. Wow.

The sound in the speaker is a little weak at full volume; on a noisy street you have to press the phone harder to your ear. But in principle this is not so critical. The button for turning on the energy-saving mode is loose.

    1. As you know, android has 3 types of memory:
    1) Section /data Inner memory for applications. The section where applications are installed, regular means the user cannot access this section (root rights are required for access). This is where installed applications are located.
    2) Section /mnt/sdcard Internal memory available to the user.
    3) External SD card.
So I installed a small number of applications, but when installing a new application, a message appeared that there was not enough memory. Despite the fact that I transferred almost all applications to external card, on the internal one there was about 700 MB free, it still gave the same error. I had to root the phone, increase the “Partition /data Internal memory for applications”, i.e. waste time on this, yeah

Not quite the usual size, there are no physical call or end buttons. But can this be considered a disadvantage? :) Even when charging, the upper part gets a little warm, which is psychologically a little unpleasant. When there is an incoming call, it is not clear which way to move the “button”, but I quickly got used to it. There is no film for it in stores, and the supplied one quickly scratches, although this does not interfere with work at all.

The design of the device is nothing special. The Philips B 8510 looks like a standard modern smartphone: a rectangular body, slightly convex top and bottom edges, rounded corners. There is a slight slope towards the back of the device. The ergonomics of the phone are excellent. All components fit tightly together.

The good news is that the phone screen has Gorilla Glass protection. Therefore, we can talk about the display’s resistance to scratches and damage.

However, the device does have some design flaws. Just shake your smartphone a few times. The owner will hear something loose inside him. Most likely it's the battery. The developers did not fix it too much. Otherwise, there are no complaints - the phone does not creak, does not crunch, or falls apart.

Despite its large dimensions and weight of 173 grams, the Philips W8510 Xenium fits perfectly in the hand. Using a smartphone is really convenient. Some owners say that the device could be made more compact. But this feature is not emphasized as a disadvantage.

About controls

Now a little about the controls. On the front panel (top) is the phone's speaker. It is covered with a small mesh. Works this element The controls are excellent: it has excellent volume, the interlocutor can be heard clearly and intelligibly. However, holding the phone near your ear is not always comfortable - all this is due to the sharp edges of the metal speaker frame. They may scratch. This drawback needs to be addressed.

There is a light sensor to the right of the speaker, a proximity sensor and a front camera to the left. About memory

One drawback to filming video on a phone is the significant magnification of the image.

The front camera is not suitable for taking great pictures. It shoots in 1.3 megapixel quality. But for selfies or video calls, the front camera is ideal.

Communications

The performance of the device is briefly discussed: the phone is productive, it consumes a small amount of energy. However, the speed of the device sometimes leaves much to be desired. Random access memory The gadget doesn't have much. Therefore, problems may arise with some software.

operating system

About operating system The gadget is not worth saying much. The device runs on Android based. This fact alone pleases its owners. Version software installed on the phone - 4.2. Not the latest build of Android, but it works well.

Philips W8510 Xenium is supported automatic download updates. It is better not to neglect them. This software corrects minor errors and shortcomings of Android 4.2.

About media

A device under study, like everyone else modern phones, supports working with media formats. To listen to music, the smartphone has a special player. Standard application for all Androids fourth versions. The equalizer of this program also does not stand out in any way. You can enhance bass frequencies and adjust 3D sound.

The sound quality in the headphones, according to reviews, is excellent. The volume is also good. The sound does not make noise, does not hum, does not break. The ringing speaker does not overlap, which ensures good audibility under any circumstances.

FM radio is also nice. It operates with frequencies in the range 87.5-107.8 FM. The application supports broadcast recording. Documents are saved in 3gpp format.

A video player also has its place. Philips W8510 it works with any resolutions, accepts mp4, 3GP, AVI. But not all audio codecs are recognized.

Price

The unsurpassed advantage of the Philips Xenium W8510 is the price. As already mentioned, this device is in the middle price category. It costs about 7-9 thousand rubles. This is not to say that it is very expensive. But the device is not cheap either.

It is noted that the price tag for this device does not upset buyers. Philips Xenium W8510, whose price is about 9,000 rubles, is really worth the money.
