Redmi Note 4 is the 11th smartphone released by Xiaomi in 2016. It would seem that the mid-budget segment is already quite saturated with offers from this manufacturer. For example, relatively recently the market for affordable devices was “stormed” by the Redmi Note 3 Pro. Not everyone had yet managed to buy this device when the Redmi line was replenished with another phablet.

Now it remains to be seen whether the new product will compare favorably with its predecessor in terms of design, hardware, stability and cost. The first thing that might interest a potential buyer is Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is equipped with a 10-core processor. And the price is more than attractive: from 167 USD for the 16 GB version. The 64 GB version will cost at least $222. Prices are current at the time of this review.

Characteristics of Xiaomi Redmi Note 4

The smartphone has quite serious hardware for its price category.

Appearance, connectors, buttons and sensors

The smartphone has an “all-metal” design: connoisseurs of high-quality assembly approve. The metal of the case is matte and does not slip in the hand. Instead of plastic inserts, there are much thinner plastic seams. The display and front panel are covered with 2.5D glass.

Color variations: silver/golden back panel combined with a white front panel, and gray “back” combined with a dark front panel. The back part is almost exactly the same as the top Redmi Pro, only a fingerprint scanner is installed in place of the second camera. There are no complaints about the speed and correct operation of the sensor.

Pronounced curves along the edges of the rear panel have a positive effect on the comfort of one-handed grip. A thin shiny edging emphasizes the oblique cut at the ends, adding extra charm to the design.

Touch navigation buttons are located at the bottom of the screen. They are illuminated very dimly, but this is enough for use in the dark. An event indicator light is installed above the screen in the right corner. The combined SIM card tray and flash drive slot is located on the left side, the power and volume control buttons are on the right.

On the bottom edge there is a MicroUSB connector (with OTG support), and on the sides of it there are neat holes. The fact that on the right is a speaker, on the left is a microphone. On the top edge there is a second microphone, an infrared port and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

Bottom line: visually and tactilely, Note 4 is perceived much better than its predecessor.

CPU

The hardware is based on top-end MediaTek processor Helio X20 (64 bit, 10 cores). “Impact” performance is provided by 2 Cortex-A72 cores with a frequency of 2.1 GHz. The remaining 8 Cortex-A53 cores are less powerful and are distributed to process tasks that do not require high computing power. The graphics chip used is not the weak Mali-T880 MP4. The results of the synthetic performance test are also impressive: up to 85 thousand points in Antutu.

The characteristics “on paper” and the numbers in benchmarks are impressive. But reality is much more important. For this particular device, the importance of 10 cores is greatly overestimated. Yes, the smartphone easily copes with any everyday tasks, the system interface works quickly. However, in the same “tanks” at maximum graphic settings You won't be able to play.

It is generally accepted that throttling is to blame for this situation: when a certain temperature level is reached, the processor automatically lowers the frequency. Naturally, at the expense of performance. In normal operation this is not noticeable, but a drop in FPS in 3D games and accompanying lags are guaranteed. But there will be no problems with overheating here.

Memory

The standard version received 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of main memory. The extended version has 3 GB of RAM, and the built-in storage is as much as 64 GB. There is a serious gap between versions in the built-in storage capacity. If necessary, the lack of free space for storing your own files can be offset by an external drive in MicroSD format (up to 128 GB). “You just” need to stop using a second SIM card.

Regardless of the amount of RAM (2 or 3 GB), undemanding users will be pleased with the fast and relatively stable operation of the device. But advanced users will encounter a lack of RAM even in the extended version (with 3 GB of RAM). You can run a maximum of 3 applications at the same time. If there are 4 or more of them, they are simply unloaded from RAM. It is impossible to force a smartphone to send notifications even from the most important applications: “protection” against memory overload is triggered.

There are suggestions that the reason lies in insufficiently optimized software. It is possible that future updates will improve the situation.

Autonomous operation

The battery is quite capacious: 4100 mAh. Autonomy is normal, but not outstanding: the charge is enough for 1 day of active use. With a moderate intensity of use - 1.5 days, for thrifty users the battery will last for 2 days. At maximum load, the smartphone can withstand 4-5 hours maximum. Technology fast charging not supported. It will take 2 hours and 25 minutes to fully recharge the charge.

Camera

Great by day, terrible by night: this a brief description of 13-megapixel main camera in Xiaomi Redmi Note 4. A photo module with an f/2.0 aperture is complemented by a flash and fast PDAF autofocus. The interface of the Camera application is no different from others budget models Xiaomi, there is no full-fledged manual mode, only a simplified variation of it with basic capabilities.

There is no noticeable progress in improving shooting quality compared to previous models. During the day, in ideal lighting, you can get detailed pictures with good color rendition. Dynamic range medium, to improve the sharpness of photos, do not forget about the HDR mode. The device copes perfectly with macro photography.

Indoors at artificial lighting A soft noise reduction comes into play, so the level of detail is acceptable.

At night and in the evening, everything is expectedly bad: low detail, blurriness, noise.

Video recording is possible in a resolution of 1920 x 1080 (30 fps). Slow and fast motion shooting in HD resolution (1280 x 720) is supported. Videos are of normal quality, but the device is still better at taking photographs. The front camera (5 MP, f/2.0) produces quite acceptable results with sufficient lighting.

Display

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is equipped with a wonderful 5.5-inch IPS OGS display with FullHD resolution (1920 x 1080). The brightness range is wide; at the minimum backlight level, almost nothing is visible during the day, but in complete darkness the screen does not dazzle your eyes. At the maximum value (450 cd/m2), you can safely use your smartphone on a bright sunny day. Viewing angles are good, the loss of contrast can only be noticed when viewed from “extreme” angles.

A cheaper analogue is installed as protective glass Gorilla Glass(manufacturer not specified). In order for the first scratches to appear on the glass, it is enough to walk with the device in your pocket several times. The oleophobic layer is of fairly high quality: your finger glides across the glass with ease, and fingerprints are erased with one movement.

Networking capabilities

The hybrid tray can accommodate 2 SIM cards: one in micro format, the other in nano format (installed instead of a MicroSD flash drive). The smartphone can connect to 2G/3G/4G networks, and one of the SIM cards supports CDMA communication. Available bluetooth module 4.2, and WiFi is capable of operating in two bands: 2.4 and 5 GHz. It's nice to have an IR port that can be used for remote control home appliances. Navigation capabilities: GPS/A-GPS + GLONASS. The device copes well with the role of a navigator, and there are no questions about the operation of all other communications.

Sound

The main multimedia speaker is located on the bottom edge: another small difference from the Redmi Note 3. Thanks to this, the rear panel looks more harmonious. And the incoming call is not muffled when the smartphone is lying on the table with the screen facing up. The sound quality is nothing special, the main thing is that the sound is not flat, and the volume level is average, that is, quite sufficient. The sound in good headphones is clear, loud, and detailed.

Software part

On this moment The smartphone has received an update to the global version of MIUI v8. This is a multilingual version, with Google services, without hieroglyphs and Chinese applications. The shell is based on Android 6.0 OS. It has a nice interface and the ability to flexible settings. At the same time, there are problems with optimizing the firmware (remember the problems with the RAM). During operation, less obvious defects may appear.

However, MIUI is regularly improved and updated. There is no doubt that over time, developers will bring the OS to an almost ideal state.

Individual characteristics

To unlock the display, you no longer need to lift your smartphone from the table and then turn it over to reach the scanner. Now the screen can be activated by double tap.

It is also worth mentioning such innovations as Dual apps and Second Space. The first allows you to “clone” any application in order to log in to it under two different accounts. The second allows you to divide the workspace into 2 profiles: each will have its own design, an individual set of software and its own settings.

Advantages and disadvantages

Pros:

  • good design, almost perfect assembly;
  • excellent screen for image quality;
  • presence of a fingerprint sensor, infrared port, light event indicator;
  • software utilities (Dual apps, Second Space, unlock with double tap);
  • CDMA support;
  • adequate cost.

Minuses:

  • severe throttling in games;
  • even with three GB of RAM, there is a lack of it (due to crude firmware);
  • hybrid slot for SIM and MicroSD.

Who is a smartphone suitable for?

For those who need a beautiful and functional phablet at a reasonable price. Adjusted for the fact that the user is ready to put up with the current instability of the software and does not count on high-quality night shots. It is cost-effective for Xiaomi fans to hold off on purchasing a device until stable firmware is released. Or skip the “four” altogether, waiting for the next model.

Our review of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 smartphone

No serious innovations have been noticed compared to Redmi Note 3 PRO. That is, owners of the third version make no sense to pay attention to the “four”. It’s another matter if we consider the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 as an independent device and do not make comparative analogies. In this case, this is a very successful smartphone worthy of attention.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 design

The phone looks nice and even expensive. The all-metal nature of the case and the plastic seams for the antenna leads look quite solid.

For the most part appearance The smartphone is inherited from its older brother with minor changes.

Namely: only one camera module is installed, as well as a slightly simpler screen in terms of color reproduction.

The arrangement of buttons and other elements along the body is standard: on the right we will find the power button and volume control, on the left there are connectors for SIM cards.

A Micro-USB connector is installed at the bottom end.

Experts have different preferences regarding the type of connector.

Some people think that this phone model should be “armed” with a type connector, while others talk about the practicality and versatility of the Micro-USB connector.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 combines these traditional smartphone design features with a number of features:

Touch buttons. Touch buttons have appeared on the front panel, which can roughly be called “Menu”, “Back”, “Exit”.
Fingerprint's scanner. Located on the back panel under the camera
Symmetry.

The aforementioned solidity of the case seems to be achieved due to the symmetry of the arrangement of all elements.

Upon closer examination, you will find, for example, symmetry in the position of the front and sensor window in relation to the earpiece slot.

The same applies to the end elements.

In addition to the fact that the phone with all the above-mentioned delights is also comfortable to hold, the design of Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 deserves a solid “A”.

Screen

The quality and usability of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 display is generally a controversial issue.

From a purely technical point of view, the screen is very good for such a budget device.

The matrix supports FULL HD resolution, the picture looks smooth and good under any circumstances, the viewing angle is quite wide.

The screen sensitivity is good and supports up to 10 touches simultaneously.

The screen also has nice features, such as a “reading mode” with dimmed brightness and a very convenient “software screen reduction” function.

“Software screen reduction” is a function that reduces the working windows to such a size that the phone can be easily operated with one hand.

But what the display can be criticized for is its contrast and insufficient color depth.

Despite the wide brightness range, the screen falls short in these areas.

So on a bright sunny day, working with Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 on the street is unlikely to be comfortable.

Another “pain point” of the screen is its protection.

The matrix is covered with slightly convex glass with an oleophobic coating, which you should not count on in extreme situations.

Also, many users of this model note that the screen is easily scratched.

In the overall picture, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 display has the following pros and cons:

  • FULL HD resolution and smooth image
  • Good sensor
  • Good viewing angle
  • “Software screen reduction” makes the smartphone convenient in any circumstances.

Minuses

  • Insufficient color depth and contrast
  • Weak protection

Although Xiaomi screen Redmi Note 4 can hardly be considered an advantage of the gadget; nevertheless, its shortcomings are not critical enough to abandon this phone.

Especially against the backdrop of an excellent FULL-HD matrix with a wide viewing angle.

The camera equipped with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 smartphone can be classified as a conventional “regular camera”.

Available modes:

HDR mode
Manual mode
Flash mode

To Work with system settings made easier thanks to the search bar. Now you don’t need to “shovel” the entire menu in search of the desired parameter.

Second space

The interface also offers interesting feature"Second space".

Figuratively speaking, you can create a second smartphone inside a smartphone, with your own settings, contacts and all the parameters.

This option will be very useful if two people use one phone.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is very easy to use and easy to set up.

This smartphone will perform excellently in situations where you need to react quickly.

Performance

If we talk about the “filling”, then the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 assembly is optimal for this price.

Hidden inside the case is a ten-core Helio processor and a good Mali-T880 MP4 video accelerator.

In fact, this means that the average user will have more than enough performance reserves.

Let's take a closer look at what the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is capable of in specific cases.

  • Websurfing. The built-in RAM (3GB) is enough to squeeze everything you can out of the Internet browser without a headache. copes well with a bunch open tabs, flash player and fast scrolling.
  • Applications. When working with a large number of applications, Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 can “cough easily”, however, such inconveniences will only occur in case of overload.
  • Games. It is worth understanding that Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is not “tailored” for games at maximum speed.

The video accelerator does not cope well with “heavy” graphics, but this only applies to the “ultra” settings.

In variants with medium and low Xiaomi settings Redmi Note 4 performs well and makes gaming fun quite comfortable with smooth images and excellent FPS.

  • Video. Here the smartphone performs excellently. When loading a “heavy” 4K video through a native player, the video plays without any “brakes”, and rewinding also works properly.
  • . The design features of the case make the increase in temperature noticeable to the hands, but not critical. It is also worth noting that although the “nimbleness” of the phone decreases due to overheating according to system indicators, in reality this is barely noticeable when working with the phone.

Overall, the performance of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is optimal for those who need a smartphone to make everyday life easier.

Basic “delights” like web surfing, working with applications and watching videos are excellent here, and this gadget can rightfully be classified as “ good quality behind good price».

Video review of Xiaomi Redmi Note 4:

It would seem that just recently the Xiaomi company released the Redmi Note 3 phone, and the “four” has already been born. Is it possible to say that the Redmi Note “four” version has some significant difference from the previous phone in the line? Or are there no significant differences, and the whole point is the desire of manufacturers to earn more? You can understand by reading the review on the Arstyle website or reading our honest review Xiaomi Redmi Note 4.

The gadget comes with a USB cable, power adapter and a set of documents. The box, as usual, is not very big. The kit includes instructions for those who are encountering Xiaomi products for the first time and do not know how to operate the phone.

An interesting fact: Xiaomi Redmi 4 in appearance is not at all similar to the “three”, but to the flagship Redmi Pro. Both gadgets come in a solid metal case with plastic inserts. In both places we see identical perforations for the speaker. The only difference is that the Pro version has two cameras and a physical return button. start screen menu. The camera, by the way, is located on the Pro exactly where the manufacturers of the Redmi Note 4 placed the fingerprint scanner.

The front surface of the device accommodates not only the screen, but also the earpiece, front camera and light sensor. Just below the screen there are touch buttons for Home, Back and Menu. Using the keys on the right panel, you can control the volume and lock and turn on the screen. On the left there is a slot for a SIM card or additional card memory.

An audio output, microphone and infrared port are located at the top end. At the bottom there is a connector for a USB cable, and to the right and left of it there are perforations for speakers. There is no MHL standard yet.

Finally, on the back is the already mentioned fingerprint scanner and the main camera lens along with a two-color LED flash.

The classic version of Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 3 is made, oddly enough, not in black. The developers paint the panel white, gold or dark gray, leaving black aside.

Convenience

Reviewing the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 smartphone, it should be noted that it is very easy to use. The case does not bend and does not creak when twisted. We feel that the body is made of metal when we take the smartphone in our hand - the device is quite heavy. But I’m glad that the metal is truly reliable. This is an excellent aluminum alloy. In Redmi Note 3, the metal is an order of magnitude thinner, which can be felt to the touch.

The screen dimensions remained at the usual level - 5.5 inches. It’s good that all the connectors remain in their usual places, and you won’t have to relearn how to use the phone. After just a short time of working with the gadget, you can easily find all the physical buttons blindly. The touch buttons are backlit.

Let's say a few words about the fingerprint sensor. The finger fits perfectly on it, and the system can recognize not only the index finger, but any other finger.

Display

The screen of the fourth Note recognizes up to 10 touches simultaneously. Its resolution is 1920x1080 pixels with a density of 401 ppi. To protect the screen, 2.5D rounded glass is applied to its surface. An oleophobic coating is applied on top.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 global version will delight its owners with a thoughtfully crafted screen. Good visibility is ensured at any level of illumination. The colors are clear and rich, with the right level of contrast. You can change the display settings color temperature from cold to warm shades and back, or use the reading mode, which will automatically block ultraviolet radiation. If desired, reading mode can be turned on automatically through certain applications.

In general, Xiaomi has once again pleased us with its smartphone screen. This is already becoming a trademark of the manufacturer.

Interface

The phone works on the basis software Android 6.0 under the proprietary MIUI 8 interface. The standard firmware includes several main languages, including Russian. There are a minimum of additional programs - only the most basic ones are included. This is good because the user can always go to Google Play and download the application he needs.

Traditionally for MIUI, all applications are located on desktops. There is no limit to their number, so create as many as you like. For convenience, you can also sort applications into folders.

Through the settings it is possible to set the “Light Mode” menu. It assumes that the user will see large icons of only the applications that are most needed to use. There is also a Second Space mode. If it is activated, a full-fledged duplicate of the interface will be created, and in it all applications and data will be different. This is convenient if two people use the same phone, or the same user uses the gadget both at work and in his personal life. The second profile has its own memory section, so that data located in different profiles will not be mixed. To quickly switch from one profile to another, just click on the Switch icon. At the request of the phone owner, switching can only occur if the procedure is confirmed via a password or fingerprint.

By swiping left or right side The “Home” button activates the “one-handed mode”, in which a smaller screen appears, convenient for operation with one hand. An irreplaceable thing, especially if you have to use the phone while holding the handrail in transport.

Specifications

Don't look for the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Snapdragon 625 - the manufacturer of this gadget decided to use the MediaTek Helio X20 processor. At the presentation of the new product, company representatives said that the performance of the fourth model in the line will be approximately 60% higher than that of the third, and at the same time, energy consumption for the operation of the gadget will be reduced by a third.

A decent level of graphics is provided by the quad-core Mali-T880 MP4 accelerator. There is only 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of built-in memory, of which the user can actually fill up to 11 GB. Of course, this is not enough, but you can additionally buy a memory card up to 128 GB. The slot for it is combined with a slot for a SIM card, so you need to choose either a second card for communication or a memory card.

An improved modification of the model assumes the presence of 3 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory. There is no configuration with 32 GB of internal memory. The market demand for Redmi Note 4 64 Gb is even greater than for the standard version, even if its price is higher. This is understandable - it’s unlikely that 16 GB of disk space will really be enough for anyone, and you don’t really want to install a memory card at the expense of the SIM card slot.

Popular benchmark for assessing performance AnTuTu smartphones When testing the device, it gave a high score of 81604 points. In fact, the gadget will be able to solve any task that is popular today that the user sets for a mobile device. Games are on high settings and without lags.

Camera

The resolution of the main camera of the model is 13 megapixels. According to company representatives, an OmniVision sensor is installed, and one of the latest and most effective developments. The five-element lens and f/2.0 aperture are complemented by phase detection autofocus and a dual-tone LED flash. The front camera also turned out to be quite decent - 5 megapixels with an f/2.0 aperture.

If we conduct a global analysis of the camera after using it for a couple of weeks, we can say that it perfectly performs the task of color rendering, does not allow errors in exposure and guarantees obtaining the most detailed images regardless of the lighting level. The main advantage of the front camera is its fixed focus. To get good pictures, we recommend using it only in sufficient lighting.

The camera has enough modes for shooting: “Panorama”, “Alignment”, “Manual mode”, “Night mode”, “Timer”, “Voice”, “Scene”, “Enhancement”. In manual mode, you can only set white balance and ISO yourself, while distance and shutter speed remain fixed parameters.

Battery

The model is equipped with a 4100 mAh battery; it cannot be removed and replaced. It takes about two and a half hours to fully charge the battery. In terms of autonomy, AnTuTu gives the phone 9215 points - this is almost twice the average.

In the settings, the user can choose the energy consumption modes - balanced or productive. Can also be customized automatic shutdown power-saving mode for a particular application.
