Mi Note, Xiaomi's largest and most expensive smartphone, has not been updated for almost two years. The Chinese manufacturer seemed to be waiting for the right moment to release an updated model and, as it turned out, it finally arrived. After Samsung's failure with its spontaneously combusting Galaxy Note 7 phablet Xiaomi company fussed and released Mi Note 2, which is similar to the deceased Korean flagship not only in appearance, but also in cost. Let's see what Xiaomi can offer for the amount you can spend on a top-end A-brand smartphone.

A couple of years ago, Xiaomi switched from yellow cardboard boxes to white ones. The latter look more, so to speak, premium, solid, and fit perfectly into the ideology of an expensive Chinese smartphone. Although it would be possible to put the expensive Mi Note 2 in the box for Mi Mix. True, in these boxes everything is always standard - a power supply, a cable, a clip for removing the SIM tray, and the smartphone itself in a special tray.

Suddenly, in addition to all this, the Mi Note 2 comes with a plastic cover for primary protection of the glass back of the smartphone. The smartphone fits in it like a glove, although the accessory itself is quite simple and, in my opinion, spoils the attractive appearance of the device.

Appearance, ergonomics

One quick glance is enough to notice the resemblance Samsung Galaxy Note 7 and Xiaomi Mi Note 2. The body of the two smartphones is made mainly of glass, which is curved on the sides on both sides - back and front. But it’s worth considering that the rounded back was already in the first generation of Mi Note, which was presented in January 2015. So I wouldn’t talk about complete similarity.

It is not clear what kind of glass the front and back panels smartphone. The feeling of using a smartphone for a week is tempered glass, similar to those produced by Corning ( Gorilla Glass). It is important to know that they both have an oleophobic coating, so although fingerprints are collected, I would not call, for example, the back cover a brand. On a black smartphone, fingerprints are slightly visible, but on a gray smartphone there will definitely be nothing.

At the back, by the way, Mi Note 2 is somewhat reminiscent of Mi Mix - a solid glass cover (Mi Mix has ceramic instead), on which there is a place for a camera with a minimally protruding bevel and a dual-LED flash. The front has the same curved glass with a large 5.7- inch screen. Above it is a voice speaker, various sensors, a front camera and a useful notification LED, below there is a touch-mechanical Home button with a fingerprint sensor and two touch buttons Menu and Back on the sides. The last two have a fairly pleasant white backlight with a comfortable brightness level.

The rim along the contour of the case is made of metal and painted almost the same color as the entire case - black with a gray tint. Most likely, anodizing technology was used in its production, because during normal use it does not leave scratches. Unfortunately, there is no official information either on the frame of the case or on the glass manufacturer. There are several small and almost invisible plastic inserts on the frame for correct operation. wireless modules. The power and adjustment buttons are also made of metal, have an excellent tight action and are located in the usual place on the side. On the other side of the case there is a tray for two nano SIM cards.

Xiaomi again made a mistake with the location of the standard headphone jack and left it at the top of the body next to the infrared sensor and the second microphone for noise reduction. On the opposite side - USB port Type-C and two symmetrical hole islands. Traditionally, a loud multimedia speaker is located under one, and a microphone under the other.

Mi Note 2 is assembled the way a modern one should be assembled flagship smartphone. Outwardly, it is flawless (until you touch it and leave a few fingerprints), plus it is perfectly assembled - nothing creaks, wobbles or plays. It feels like the smartphone is a little wider than the Galaxy Note 7, but at the same time it is quite grippy with an excellent size-to-weight ratio. Redmi Note 3 Pro with a metal body slipped out of my hand much more actively compared to Mi Note.

Fingerprint scanner and control buttons

A touch-mechanical button with a built-in fingerprint sensor is a solution that is more commonly seen in Meizu smartphones, not Xiaomi. The implementation is excellent - you only have to press the button when unlocking the smartphone; in all other cases, just one touch on it is enough to return to the main desktop. Importantly, the fingerprint scanner is much faster and more convenient than the Snapdragon Sense ID 3D sensor in the Xiaomi Mi 5s. The accuracy of operation is 9 out of 10 touches, that is, excellent. Occasionally, when pressed, the Home button makes a crunchy sound, but it works correctly.

There are complaints about the touch buttons on the sides. They have a pleasant light milky backlight, yes, but they only work perfectly if you press just above these button points. I think the solution to the problem will come with the release of the global version of MIUI.

Display

The screen is the main wow factor of the Xiaomi Mi Note 2, which the Chinese worked hard on. This is a large 5.7-inch OLED matrix with FullHD resolution. The pixel density (about 390 PPI) is enough not to look closely at the pixels, but with VR helmets (and Xiaomi has one) the resolution will not be enough. There are minimal frames on the sides of the display (about 3 mm), but on the black Mi Note 2 they are almost invisible.

If you hold the smartphone directly in front of your eyes, the colors will be a little oversaturated, the blacks will be perfect, and the whites will be minimally blue. At acute viewing angles, the white color is greatly distorted and the overall tone of the display shifts into blue and green shades. This effect is further enhanced by the curved screen, which shimmers blue and green at angles. In the MIUI settings you can adjust the display contrast, but this does not affect the final picture much.

The maximum brightness level is average - 341 nits (cd/m²), which may not be enough for comfortable use of smartphones in direct sunlight. The minimum brightness is low enough to read text from the screen in complete darkness without straining your eyes.

Comparative table of display brightness levels in smartphones:

The practical value of the curved display of the Mi Note 2 is zero. Why? Samsung in its Note smartphones and S7 Edge with similar matrices have implemented various software features - for example, calling contacts by swiping from the right edge of the screen or displaying service information on a curved edge. At Xiaomi, it was clearly used exclusively as a decorative element.

Operating system and shell

Xiaomi Mi Note 2 runs, like all the latest smartphones from this manufacturer, on MIUI 8 Android based 6.0.1 Marshmallow. I was pleasantly surprised by the pre-installed black theme, which looks great on the OLED matrix of a black smartphone.

Even though Xiaomi already sells an international version of the Mi Note 2, there is still no global version of MIUI 8 for it. The smartphone arrives with Chinese custom firmware MIUI 8 with Russian localization, which works less stable than the original Chinese one. For now the best option- stay on the original Chinese, install Google Apps and Russian localization of applications morelocale according to this manual.

MIUI itself on Mi Note 2, except for the color design, is no different from the MIUI that is installed, for example, on Xiaomi Mi 5s and other smartphones from this manufacturer. From interesting to relatively new firmware Dual Apps and Second Space can be noted. In the first option, you can keep two identical applications in the system with different data inside them, and in the second, create a second account on the device with your own settings, applications and files. When working with Mi Note 2 with its huge display, the One-Hand Control function is very helpful, which reduces the working area of the display from 4.5 to 3.5 inches.

Hardware platform

The newest and most productive mobile chipset at the moment is Qualcomm Snapdragon 821, which Xiaomi recently chose for its new flagship Mi 5s. Given that it turned out to be controversial there due to throttling, it was especially interesting to see what was achieved with it in the glass smartphone Mi Note 2.

Snapdragon 821 - 64-bit chipset based on Kryo architecture with four cores, only here two of them run on increased frequency 2.35 GHz, and the other two are at 1.6 GHz. The Adreno 530 video accelerator with a frequency of 624 MHz is responsible for the graphics. Predictably a smartphone on the original Chinese firmware MUI 8 runs at incredible speed from the factory. There is no lag or slowdown, and switching between applications is almost instantaneous. Impressions of system performance are similar to those obtained when testing Xiaomi Mi 5s.

There are no problems with gaming performance at first glance. Except perhaps for the famous shooter Modern Combat 5, which simply refused to launch. There are no problems with all other resource-intensive toys - they all work perfectly at maximum graphics settings. The situation changes literally after 40 minutes of play.

Throttling turns on, although the temperature of the smartphone remains reasonable - about 40 degrees Celsius. As a result, the number of FPS drops, although most games (Asphalt Extreme, Space Marshalls 2) continue to work adequately. Throttling is also clearly visible in repeated runs of the Antutu benchmark, where the number of points jumps within 10 thousand.

In other synthetic tests, Xiaomi Mi Note 2 scores a high number of points, but at the same time average at the level of modern flagships. For example, he loses in most of them Huawei Mate 9, OnePlus 3t and iPhone 7 Plus.

My Xiaomi Mi Note 2 has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of ROM, and an older model with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of ROM is also available. You should only look at the latter if you don’t have enough built-in memory. Even 4 GB of RAM is enough for the smartphone to work very quickly and keep several resource-intensive applications in memory. After the first start of the system, 2 GB of RAM is available. During the week of testing, I did not have a single application/game reboot after restarting - an excellent indicator.

Communications and multimedia

The voice speaker of Mi Note 2, of course, cannot be compared in quality to my Moto Z Play (here it sounds much better), however, the sound is a solid four plus without extraneous noise. The speaker at the bottom of the case is quite loud. It is louder than in Xiaomi Mi 5s due to a separate DAC. Since I am not an expert in the field of sound, I evaluate its quality solely in comparison with other smartphones. I dare say that the sound in wired headphones VE Monk Plus Mi Note 2 delivers excellent results - with pronounced bass and excellent detail.

I don't have a single complaint about the Wi-Fi receiver. In my case everything worked fine. The signal was received well in two rooms - in an old Stalinist apartment through a wooden door and a thick concrete wall, and also in a large office with a powerful router.

Autonomy

Compared to the first Mi Note, Xiaomi has made a major leap in battery capacity with its second big flagship. Instead of 3000 mAh, there is a 4070 mAh battery installed here, similar to that in the latest models of the Redmi line. True, you shouldn’t count on exorbitant autonomy here - after all, we are talking about a smartphone on the most powerful mobile chip.

Interestingly, Xiaomi Mi Note 2 and Mi 5s are approximately equal in terms of battery life. Apparently, the increased screen size is offset by the economical OLED matrix. We are talking about an honest 8 hours in the PCMark benchmark. In normal use with online music, social networks, a minimum of calls and adaptive screen backlighting, the smartphone works from early morning until late evening. On average, this is 5-6 hours of screen operation.

Yes, Mi Note 2 supports the popular standard fast charging Quick Charge 3.0, thanks to which a standard power adapter with output currents of 5 V / 2.5 A, 9 V / 2 A and 12 V / 1.5 A is fully charged in an average of 1 hour and 40 minutes. For comparison, my previous Redmi Note 3 Pro with the same battery capacity took about 3 hours to charge on average.

Cameras

Lastly Xiaomi time They thoroughly upgrade their smartphones with good camera modules, and Mi Note 2 is no exception. It has a 22.5-megapixel Sony IMX318 sensor with a fairly large size of 1/2.6” (but smaller than in the Mi 5s). The aperture is f/2.0, there is a dual flash, phase detection autofocus and digital image stabilization. In my opinion, the quality of the images matches that of the Mi 5s smartphone, with one caveat. Photos from Mi Note 2 are more detailed.

The focus works well for macro photography, but when there is a lack of lighting, Xiaomi smartphones have not learned to take photographs at the level of A-brand devices.

You can download full-size photographs using this link.

Example of a panoramic photo:

The standard camera application will be familiar to all Xiaomi users, there are no changes here. Eat additional modes shooting: night mode, HDR, beauty and others.

A true flagship in 2017 simply needs to be able to shoot in 4K. Mi Note 2 is just one of these - it shoots video in resolutions of 3840 by 2160 and 1920 by 1080 pixels. Digital image stabilization does not help the picture quality very much - the image is a little jerky.

The front camera here is 8 megapixels with an f/2.0 aperture. The final images can be praised for their detail, although the front camera sometimes misses the mark.

Results

Mi Note 2 is the same Xiaomi experiment as the first generation of this smartphone. It will definitely appeal to all fans of the big “old man” - the device has been improved on all fronts. As many people do, I would not compare it with the defunct Samsung Galaxy Note 7; after all, there is no unique S-Pen stylus, no software features for a curved screen, no moisture protection. But if you need a top-end Xiaomi smartphone with the most big screen, then this is exactly the option.

What I liked:

  • unique appearance;
  • equipment;
  • black screen color;
  • performance;
  • quality of pictures of the main camera;
  • fast charging support;
  • large amount of RAM/ROM.

What I didn't like:

  • as always, difficulties with MIUI firmware;
  • throttling;
  • Camera performance in low light conditions.

Where can I buy?

Thanks to the Gearbest online store for providing the smartphone for review. At the time of publication of this article, the Mi Note 2 version with 64 GB of memory is out of stock, and the Global version of the smartphone with expanded network support will cost $670. Applying a coupon MINOTE2S reduces the price to $630, you can also save up to 10% (depending on the site) by using the cashback service.

Conclusion

Smartphones with the new curved screen, as a rule, are not inferior in performance to conventional devices. And the rating of the best smartphones with a curved display proves this to us. Large RAM on par with powerful processor makes smartphones best choice for shopping. Therefore, if you decide to buy a cell phone, choose any model and find out more information about it on our website. Enjoy the shopping!

Precisely because of the display extending onto the side edges. In some situations, a curved screen can be very inconvenient: fingers touch its surface when this is not at all planned, and some applications are accidentally launched on the smartphone. However, the people do not care about this from a high mountain, and between flatness and curvature, they choose the latter. How else can we explain the fact that at the end of 2016 there are more copies of the Galaxy S7 edge than the Galaxy S7, although the regular “seven” is noticeably cheaper?

In general, curves are fashionable. If so, then keep a selection of smartphones with curved screens. All of them are made using AMOLED (or OLED) technology, since LCDs cannot be bent in this way. .

(5.8 and 6.2 inches, 54,990 and 59,990 rubles)

Everything is clear here: the most sophisticated and one of the most expensive smartphones of our time. They can be criticized for the fingerprint scanner located in a strange place, for the alternatively gifted Bixby assistant, for just one rear camera... However, the screens in both models - both the younger and the older - are first-class. Some even consider them the best on the market.

(5.5 inches, 49,990 rubles)

Why not? The device, of course, is last year’s, but in most respects it can compete with this year’s flagships. That is, it has not lost its relevance. Glass, a good camera, firmware with Android 7.0 Nougat and other joys are included. And you will have to pay a little less than for the Galaxy S8.

(5.7 inches, 34,990 rubles)

One of the most charismatic Xiaomi smartphones. It stands out from other models of the company precisely thanks to the 5.7-inch curved OLED screen manufactured by LG. The bends here are minor, and they are needed primarily so that you can say: “Look, we also made a smartphone with a curved screen! Weeeeeee!” The body is made of glass, the battery is powerful (4000 mAh), the chipset is fast (Snapdragon 821). For some time now, Xiaomi Mi Note 2 has been in Russia.

(5.4 inches, about 25,000 rubles)

The device is very rare and, without exaggeration, unique. Simply because this is the only smartphone today in the “slider” form factor. The charms don't end there: the BlackBerry Priv is equipped with a curved AMOLED screen, and Canadians were able to find a useful use for this very curvature. On the part of the screen that creeps onto the side edge of the case, a strip is displayed - a battery charge indicator. It looks nice, and it is also very convenient in practice. In Russia, BlackBerry Priv is not officially sold; it can only be found at gray dealers with all the ensuing risks.

(5.5 inches, about 90,000 rubles)

The most expensive device in our selection. Of course, a good third of the price is added due to the Porsche Design studio logo. But the price did not particularly affect the popularity: they say that people are buying this model very actively. Which is actually not surprising: smartphones with a pronounced image “charge” are few and far between today. And Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Design is just like that. The picture is complemented by impressive specifications: 256 GB of memory, a powerful Kirin 960 chipset, as well as a pair of cameras on the rear panel, created with the participation of Leica.

(5.46 inches, about 36,000 rubles on AliExpress)

Vivo was one of the first to purchase curved screens from Samsung. At the beginning of 2016, she released a model, and at the end of the year she launched the Xplay6 smartphone. From the back it is very reminiscent of an iPhone, and in terms of filling it is a typical flagship from the end of 2016 - beginning of 2017: Snapdragon 820, a pair of rear cameras, 6 GB of RAM. An interesting smartphone, but for rabid exotic lovers. Because it’s not that cheap, and it’s not officially supplied to Russia. Maybe, .

With the increase in smartphone screen diagonals, a problem has arisen related to the inconvenience of using devices in one hand. Manufacturers have not stopped improving the models, but have focused on the efficient use of the front panel surface.

A reasonable way out of the situation was to reduce the borders around the screen. Nobody has yet developed a device with a complete absence of frames, but work is in active mode. We recommend checking out our selection of smartphones without frames that you can purchase today.

Sharp Corner R

Great device from Sharp. Before the company delighted us with its frameless smartphones, this time the company went even further and presented a 5.2-inch device on which Touchpad occupies 90% of the front surface. The smartphone should soon go on sale under the famous Sharp logo. In our country, such devices are rarely found; apparently, you will have to order the goods from abroad.

ABOUT this smartphone All that is known is that it has a 5.2 screen with a resolution of 1920x1080, developed using IGZO technology. The remaining parameters are not yet known.

A rather unusual frameless smartphone called Elephone P9000 Edge. The display has a diagonal of 5.5 inches with a resolution of 1930x1080 pixels. The model is equipped with 8 nuclear processor MediaTek Helio P10 (MT6755), 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory.

Note that the smartphone was originally planned to be equipped with 6 GB of RAM. In addition, a dual camera module was expected, which was never implemented, limiting itself to a single one. The camera in the device is 20.7 MP.

Ulefone Future

Another fresh release of the 2017 season, Ulefone Future, has gone on sale, the device is already available in some online stores.

In terms of its parameters, Ulefone Future is somewhat similar to ZTE Nubia Z11. It has a 5.5 display 1920x1080 pixels, 32 GB internal memory with the ability to use memory cards, 4 GB of RAM, a 16 MP camera and an 8-core MediaTek Helio P10 (MT6755) processor.
