Or maybe the cable just doesn’t have the contacts that are needed to transmit sound? The DVI-I dual link cable has the most complete set of conductors inside, but the rest need to be looked at.

8 Some TV models have a menu item “Audio HDMI”. When enabled, audio will only be taken from the HDMI input when an HDMI cable is connected. You need to know this if you are using a DVI-DVI cable, and there is a DVI-HDMI adapter in front of the TV and the sound is supplied via a separate cable. So, with this connection and the “Audio HDMI” item is active, there will be no sound on the TV. When you disable this menu item, the sound should work.

At the top, you are prompted to change the settings for the entire sound at once. The current level is 47%. By clicking on the speaker icon, you can instantly turn off all speakers; the balance is located next to it. But there are 12 more settings! They shouldn't scare us:

It remains to add that changing the level of the orange connector simultaneously controls the subwoofer and the central speaker, and the gray connector controls both side speakers. Only the inscriptions “in” can lead to confusion. In fact, some of the connectors are audio outputs. We didn't say anything about blue. This is a line-level analog input, like a (pink) microphone. Headset on the front panel of the system unit

The second on the Realtek HD Audio 2nd output list is the front panel audio connector. A red arrow means it is not connected. As already mentioned above. This option means that the motherboard has a free F_AUDIO connector where you can connect a headset. Its typical appearance is shown in the picture.


If you look closely, you can see the second bottom pin from the left. This is the key that determines the connector layout. The electrical interface is shown on the screenshot.


The pinout will help you connect almost any headset here. Please note that F_AUDIO can be connected to two different physical interfaces:

  • AC`97.
  • HD audio.

The table is given for the second case, because the first is becoming obsolete. But in the specification for the motherboard you need to clarify what signals this connector comes with. In addition, you can separately find internal USB ports for headsets, but usually no one uses them, but instead use those located on the case system unit. The photo shows a typical combined module for the front panel of a system unit made of USB and audio jack. The two connectors differ from each other in the position of the key.


Digital audio output S/P-DIF

The last component in the playback devices menu works fine, but the description says something about a mysterious internal ATAPI port. You will not find a decoding of these words anywhere on the Internet. It's actually just an S/P-DIF connector, which isn't on the back panel. The connector on the motherboard is empty. Why might S/P-DIF be needed when setting up sound?

The interface was introduced in the 80s (XX century) by Sony and Philips after the release of the first digital CD players. To play music, it was necessary to perform double analog-to-digital conversion (reverse and forward), which reduced the quality. S/P-DIF delivers stunning sampling rates of up to 768 kHz at maximum performance. The bus bitrate is usually from 2 to 3.1 MHz depending on this parameter:

  1. 2 MHz for 32 kHz sampling rate (satellite receivers).
  2. 2.8 MHz for 44.1 kHz sampling rate (CD players).
  3. 3.1 MHz for 48 GHz sampling rate (digital tape recorders).

To evaluate the possible benefits of this connector, let's look at the supported interfaces tab.

  • DTS audio. Used to play HD video quality and Blu-ray discs. Supports 5.1 and 7.1 speaker system depending on software implementation. Suitable for connecting home cinemas.
  • Dolby Digital – in its usual form the same 5.1 interface. The difference from DTS is in the capabilities of the connected equipment (players, home theaters, etc.).
  • Microsoft WMA Pro Audio. Used by some players, such as online at nbcolympics.com/video.

All three varieties provide high-resolution digital audio for complex speaker systems. Since they are transmitted over the same channel, the process is completely transparent to the user. In some cases, codecs or drivers will be needed. S/P-DIF is a 3-in-1 hybrid output port for maximum compatibility with external equipment.

How to use S/P-DIF

From the motherboard configuration it is clear that the manufacturer (Gigabyte) does not care much about the S/P-DIF digital output. Instead, there is a high-performance HDMI port on the rear panel. This is a hybrid interface for transmitting audio and video information over one line. The only problem is that the cable is not cheap, it is extremely rarely supplied with equipment and is not supported by all devices. Speakers with an HDMI interface are extremely difficult to find, however, the same can be said about S/P-DIF (for example, Polk Audio Woodbourne).


The photo shows that the connector has only two pins. Rumor has it that Gigabyte uses an ALC883 transmitter here, which can be directly connected to the 75 Ohm optical or coaxial input of any equipment. To do this you will need the appropriate cable. One of the pins is the circuit ground, and the other is the digital audio output. A pin connector from a system fan (cooler) is suitable for docking. We managed to find the ports on e-bay (ebay.com/sch/-/175673/i.html?_nkw=spdif). True, they are not cheap. If possible, you need to ask for connectors at the nearest PC repair shop; sometimes they agree to sell components at a reasonable price.

Some, even old, motherboards (Asus A7N8X-X) have an S/P-DIF connector with an input. This allows you to record audio and perform some other operations here. In this case, there may be not 2 pins, but more, for example, 6. Their functions are described in the user manual (see photo).


HDMI

Analog audio will never be the best. Therefore, if it is not possible to use S/P-DIF, then you need to buy. This digital interface is usually found on modern motherboards. Its version should be found in the user manual. Starting with 2.0, the interface supports the transmission of as many as 32 independent channels. Of course, HDMI is compatible with DTS and Dolby Digital, mentioned above in connection with S/P-DIF. HDMI is aimed at movie buffs rather than audiophiles because it allows simultaneous transmission of high-definition video.

To use the interface, you need to buy a cord, and on your home theater you will find an input jack. From the above it should be clear that you will need 5.1 or 7.1 (including +2) to enjoy all the benefits. Otherwise, there is no need to use such complex equipment.

Recording devices

This topic has actually been covered. An analog microphone is usually inserted into the pink jack next to the headphones, and a USB headset sometimes requires driver installation. The author had to see one village system administrator (population of about 2500 people) who said that complex headphones do not require a driver. The fact is that they don’t sell really high-quality equipment in the villages, and not everyone knows about it.

A complex USB headset is detected in Device Manager as composite device. And it doesn't work, although sometimes (we haven't seen this personally) you can hear something in the headphones. This is not suitable for Skype and communication, but it is still recommended to install the driver. Because fancy headphones can often have their own controller inside.

The main problem users have is that the microphone settings are set to zero gain. That's why you speak, but no one can hear you. This can be fixed in a couple of minutes. At the beginning it was said how to go into playback devices, and now you need to select recording devices. Check the boxes in the context menu as indicated above and change the gain. I would like to draw your attention to the fact that manufacturers also make mistakes. For example, our microphone is supposedly located on the front panel, which is not true. It is plugged into the jack next to the speakers.

The functionality is checked by lightly clicking your fingers in the receiving area. In this case, the indicator on the right side of the window will partially turn green. If this does not happen, then the sound is not coming, and communication is not at fault. Double-click on the working microphone and go to the Levels tab. Here all scales need to be set to maximum. Most programs automatically adjust the headset volume, and you don't need to worry about this. If the indicator now turns green when clicked, then everything is fine. Otherwise, we check the drivers and switches on the microphone, because the device is not working correctly.

In addition to the microphone, there is also a stereo mixer in the window. This is a system device and cannot be found on the motherboard. It is responsible for mixing channels. And if you need to capture full audio, not just a microphone, then you should choose a stereo mixer as your default device. Other programs (Audacity) allow you to make changes on the fly. Line input means blue jack (see above).

Skype

Now it is not necessary to install Skype, because an online version has appeared (web.skype.com/ru/). To do this you need to install a plugin on your browser.


After this, you will need to give permissions to the firewall, and you can start communicating. The downside is that there is no test call option. But if everything is configured according to our instructions, then there should not be any special problems. To test the microphone, use any audio capture program, including the built-in Windows Voice Recorder. In the new Windows 10, a warning will appear under the microphone, which is an additional guarantee and at the same time a signal to perform a check.


This means that apps are not allowed to use the microphone. Then here, in the sound recording, you need to go to the parameters and give permission. Otherwise the microphone will not work.


In the installed Skype application internal settings simultaneously change the system microphone gain. You need to remember this and check them periodically manually according to the scheme described above.

How to play sound on PC

First, you need to figure out how the computer reproduces sound. Analog interfaces convert a digital binary signal from music or video files into a continuous signal. First in the chain of converters are software or codecs that unpack the audio file and allow the media player to then read the audio data. After processing, data from the central software core enters the sound card, where binary audio is converted into analog audio and pre-amplified. Setting up sound on a computer in the operating room Windows environment performed both using standard system tools and using third-party utilities (which are best not to use). Below we will look at setting up the sound using standard means, which are on any computer. To do this, go to the “Start” menu, then “Toolbar” and select the icon labeled “Sound”. Setting up sound on Windows XP

Setting up sound on a Windows XP computer is done as follows: first, click the “Start” button => “Run” or “Run”, after which a window will appear, in the line of which you need to enter: “devmgmt.msc” and click the “Ok” button. Now Device Manager will appear in front of you. In general, it should be said that if there is a yellow exclamation or question mark on any device here, then this means that the device is not working correctly or is not working at all. To do this, you need to find your motherboard box, which should contain a disk with drivers for the motherboard. Using this disk we install drivers for our audio controller.
