Equipment

The phone is packaged in a compact but nice-looking cardboard box. All inscriptions, except the model and company, are in Chinese. Included:

  • Documentation;
  • Box;
  • Telephone;
  • Headphones;
  • USB-microUSB cable;
  • Charger (network-USB).

All documents (apparently the warranty and instructions) are in Chinese. Headphones with a clothes clip, a microphone and one button look as if they were bought in a transition for 5 hryvnia. I would never have thought that a branded phone with a price of about two thousand could be bundled with such nonsense. Also, in the box that came into my hands, there was no adapter for our sockets - I had to buy it.

Appearance and body

At first glance, for n inexperienced user, the phone looks too big. However, if you take the device in your hand, this impression disappears. Talking on this phone is also convenient. From the side, the phone looks elegant, befitting its size (its thickness is just under a centimeter).

On the front side above the screen in the middle there is a speaker and a logo. To the right is the camera (0.3 megapixels) and the charging indicator (lights red when charging). Below the screen there are three touch buttons: “Settings”, “Menu” and “Back”. There is also a light and distance sensor somewhere on the front panel, but I couldn't find it. I didn't find any information about this in the phone manual (at least in the pictures).

Along the contour phone is coming silver border imitating metal. On her with right side At the top there is a two-position volume control button. Top center is the power button. Opposite it at the bottom is a microUSB connector, and a little to the right is a microphone.

There is a 5 MP camera on the back of the phone. It protrudes slightly above the surface of the phone, but is recessed into a metal border that protects it from scratches. Below it is an LED flash. The second speaker is located at the bottom of the case on the left side.

There are no buttons on the case other than volume and power. Even the camera launch buttons, which is very bad. But those that exist are pressed comfortably and with a pleasant with a click.

The body is made of dark blue glossy plastic. The plastic is very soiled and slippery to the touch. Well assembled. Even after making an effort, I did not feel any play or creaking of the body in my hands. Back cover it lies very tightly, even too tightly - I personally find it inconvenient to remove it, as it is necessarypry with a sharp objectalmost along the entire perimeter. It is put back on backwards - easily and with a pleasant click.

Under the cover there is a wide 2250 mAh battery, two slots for SIM cards ( standard size) and one for the card microSD memory(up to 64 GB).

Screen

IP S phone screen size 5, 5 inches and resolution960 x 540 pixels. Image density 200 ppi, 16 million colors. Externally it makes a very pleasant impression: bright and clear, despite the relatively small number of pixels for this size. However, If the screen is under film, it looks mediocre outside even in cloudy weather. Everything you need can be seen without problems, however The picture is pretty faded.

Software

The device runs on Android 4.2.2.

By default, the phone has almost all the necessary programs:

  • File Manager
  • Complete set from Google: Play market, Chrome, Gmail, Google+, Hangouts, YouTube
  • Norton antivirus
  • Skype
  • Any share (a program for exchanging data with other devices via Wi-Fi)
  • Program for using your phone a as a modem (via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB)
  • Voice recorder, calculator, radio
  • User Tutorial
  • Battery manager.

Speaking of the battery manager, I want to dwell on it in more detail.

Lenovo thought it through very well. It contains five tabs.

1. In the first one you can find out how long your charge will last. Energy-intensive functions are immediately disabled or configured (from GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to the time the phone goes to sleep, ringer volume, vibration and automatic screen rotation). After the changes, the phone immediately recalculates the operating time and shows it to us.
2. The second displays the running processes and what percentage they make up of the phone’s total energy consumption. You can close them right away.
3. In the third, you can see at what stage of charging the phone is if it is connected to the network. The program claims that charging the phone consists of three stages: fast, smooth and support. In the first, the phone charges intensively and quickly to 80%. Then it goes into a smooth mode, where it charges more slowly to the end. At 100%, the phone goes into support mode to maintain the charge at 100% (like laptops). In the same tab, you can calibrate the battery if the phone begins to show the charge level inaccurately.
4. In the fourth tab, you can select one of four energy consumption modes: low economy, medium, high and native. Again, just like in a laptop.
5. B last tab are various settings and program information.

Desktop.

In the native version of the phone's firmware, control of the desktop and icons on it is also excellent. Just by clicking on the table, you can add shortcuts, programs, folders, widgets to it. Graphic effects, design themes, and desktop wallpaper can be configured right away. You can even put animations and videos on your desktop. You can add and remove desktops - a maximum of nine. While working, you can switch between them in the usual way - by scrolling left/right, or by pinching two fingers together (as when zooming out), open thumbnails of all tables.

Connection

An interesting nuance: when the subscriber picks up during your call, the phone vibrates. At first this is unusual, but very convenient, because due to poor communication quality you often cannot understand: the subscriber has picked up the phone and is silent, or there is still a call in progress.

The volume of the main speaker leaves much to be desired. Even at maximum conversation volume the sound is not very strong. It's sufficient for everyday situations, but in a noisy environment you probably won't hear anything.

The second speaker has good volume. To listen, for example, to an audiobook through it, 50% will be enough for you under normal conditions.

Dimensions

In terms of width (8 centimeters), the phone is, in my opinion, a little too big. It fits comfortably in your hand, but your thumb is not long enough to reach the opposite side of the screen if you hold the device with one hand.

If you hold the phone horizontally with both hands, then the size (15 and a half centimeters) fits almost perfectly: you can press the buttons in the middle of the screen with the thumbs of both hands.

However, people who have not used this type of phone before will find it very inconvenient to work with the device at first. The question immediately arises: where to put it? It doesn't even fit completely into the pockets of some pants. And even if it fits, you still think about how to sit without damaging it. True, this problem is partially compensated by a convenient function - while in your bag (which is where you will most likely carry it), the phone automatically increases the ringer volume. So keep this in mind if the question about the size of the phone is still open for you.

Camera

Five megapixels, in my opinion, is not enough for a phone that costs two thousand. But even if you don't take into account the number of points, the camera is bad.Autofocus bad — the necessary objects are often not clear.

I don’t think it’s necessary to say that photos taken at night are of terrible quality. The front VGA camera takes pictures as a VGA camera should. Also, the video quality is poor. And no 720p can save him.

In general, a battered Nokia N97 four years ago and with a similar matrix size (today you can buy it for 500 hryvnia) took both photos and videos a cut above. I don't even know if this is good or bad.

Below are examples of photos and video taken at night.

Battery

I used the phone very actively- Internet, Wi-Fi, camera, Bluetooth, games, - and so on almost all day. Is it true, the whole time the device was in off mode f line - without SIM -cards. With this usage, at the end of the first day I had 40 percent battery. That is, the phone is barely enough for two days with active use.

Charges from the computer.

Performance

The device is equipped with 4- nuclear processor MediaTek with frequency 1.3 GHz and 1 GB random access memory. The Antutu test returned 17004.

Ratings

If you evaluate all the points of the phone on a five-point scale, you get the following:

Design: 3. The phone looks absolutely nothing - neither fish nor fowl. Although you can judge for yourself.

Case quality: 4. The case is quite good looking. As good as plastic can be.

Screen: 4. Makes a pleasant impression, despite the relatively small number of pixels and slightly low brightness.

Sound: 3. Average volume, average quality. The external speaker is loud.

Ready to work: 5. Everything that an inexperienced user might need at first is in place.

Ergonomics: 2+. The lack of necessary buttons speaks for itself.

Iron: 4. Good processor, average amount of RAM, not enough built-in memory.

Camera: 2. Takes pictures poorly, no matter how you look at them. Looks average even on your own screen.

Battery: 4. Holds up well, not least thanks to the excellent manager.

Bottom line

Despite all the criticism, I liked the phone. He gives the impression of an unprepossessing, modest, but reliable hard worker. It's clearly nicer on the inside than on the outside and a pleasure to use. The only significant drawback for me is the camera. But not everyone will pay attention to this.

The rating is a solid three, adjusted for the inflated price, as for a Chinese person. That way I could have competed for the top four.

One of the leaders in the Chinese smartphone industry, Lenovo, recently updated its the lineup devices, releasing new smartphones in each line, following the development trends of such devices towards increasing processor power and increasing screen diagonal. The popular "A" series, so popular among users in Ukraine, has been replenished with the A850 smartphone, which is rapidly gaining popularity with a 5.5" diagonal. Devices with such a diagonal are even more or less comfortable to hold in the hand, and the entertainment and multimedia functions, thanks to the large screen, begin to look noticeably more interesting. than smartphones with the usual 4.7" screen.

Characteristics

The manufacturer's website states that the Lenovo A850 has the following technical characteristics:

SpecificationsLenovo A850

The price at which a smartphone can be bought in Ukraine at the beginning of April 2014 is from 1800 to 2300 UAH, which allows it to be classified as average price category.

Description

The Lenovo A850 box is made of ordinary white and red cardboard, without any additional decorations. However, it is quite reliable and of high quality, and does not fall apart in your hands, as happens with some Chinese manufacturers second echelon. Inside we find a minimal and sufficient package, which, in addition to the smartphone itself, includes:

Charger with micro-USB cable;

Headphones (which look pretty cheap);

Protective film on the screen;

Instructions in Chinese (for now we can only dream of Russification of instructions).

Taking the Lenovo A850 in your hands, you feel its rather large size. The smartphone is made quite thin, and will fit into a jeans pocket without any problems, but thanks to the 5.5" diagonal, the dimensions of the device make it almost impossible to use with one hand. It is impossible to reach the located controls with one finger. Well, increasing the diagonal is the dominant trend in the world now mobile devices, and Lenovo is no exception. However, externally the Lenovo A850 looks quite stylish and neat.

The body is made in such a way that it is difficult to find fault. Nothing bends or creaks. We received the device in black for testing (there is also a white one). Along the perimeter there is a silver plastic edging that looks like metal. The back cover is glossy, quite easily soiled and not very comfortable; your fingers slip on it, threatening to release the smartphone.

From external elements Lenovo A850 has:

  • - power button and headphone jack on the top end;
  • - micro-USB connector at the bottom;
  • - volume rocker on the right;
  • - front camera, charging indicator and speaker at the front;
  • - camera with LED flash and another speaker on the back cover.

On the front panel below the display there are also three Lenovo standard touch buttons. In general, the controls are well thought out and functional; perhaps a separate hardware button for starting the camera is missing. It would be convenient, and there is space at one end.

Screen

The Lenovo A850 display is made using IPS technology and has a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels. This is not much, especially for such a diagonal, and some “pixelation” of the picture can be noticed when carefully examining the screen. But for a simple user who does not plan to analyze the image under a microscope, the image quality will be quite sufficient. Moreover, thanks to the matrix, the viewing angles of the screen tend to be maximum, while maintaining brightness and contrast.

In bright sunlight, the screen dims noticeably, but is quite readable.

Iron

Built on a quad-core MTK 6582M processor with a frequency of 1.3 GHz, the Lenovo A850 is a fairly fast smartphone. It works very quickly, programs launch without annoying lags, and you have to try hard to load the processor.

In the popular Antutu benchmark, Lenovo A850 shows very decent performance, giving 17100 points.

Other options

The sound quality from the external speaker on the Lenovo A850 turned out to be quite good, and at the same time relatively loud (considering the “quiet” nature of many Lenovo smartphones). You will have a high chance of not missing a call in transport or on a noisy street.

The smartphone also receives praise for the quality of its wireless interfaces.

Among other features of the Lenovo A850, it is worth mentioning the rather slow start of GPS, and the FM radio that does not work without connected headphones. It's strange that they're cheap Chinese phones for a couple of hundred hryvnia they can do what an expensive smart phone from a popular brand cannot.

Camera

Main camera with 5 MP resolution, autofocus and LED backlight The quality of the photo does not shine. It happily catches “hares” in backlight and produces low-quality images in poor lighting conditions. To get decent photos, you need to shoot during the day in the sun with the sun behind you. The video, despite its HD resolution, also looks bad. In general, for that kind of money the manufacturer could have splurged on something more decent.

There is a second camera, and that says it all.

Firmware

The operating system installed in the smartphone is Android 4.2.2 with a proprietary launcher, which is quite thoughtful and convenient. Lenovo A850 likes to develop different launchers for its devices, apparently in search of some ideal unknown to us. But even those that are obtained have quite good usability. Basic set preinstalled programs quite enough to start using the phone out of the box. You can set a different ringtone for each SIM card to understand which number the subscriber is calling you on.

Representative of the budget segment of devices. There is a large display, a 4-core processor, a 2250 mAh battery and support for dual-SIM mode. It's nice that with all this the price tag for the end user is below two hundred dollars. But was the handset interesting to use?! You will learn about this in the review.

Packaging and delivery

In a compact cardboard box with a recognizable design, the user, in addition to the smartphone itself, will find a typical “ gentleman's set": adapter charger, micro-/USB cable, as well as a wired headset with an answer button plus the necessary documentation.

Appearance and assembly

Like other Lenovo smartphones, this device features a proprietary “optimizer” for battery consumption. Its name is “Lenovo Power”, and it is curious because it allows you to optimize energy consumption as much as possible by disabling unused functions.

Equipment

The smartphone runs operating system 4.2.2 out of the box.

The hardware inside is 4-core MTK6582M, clocked at 1.3 GHz. In addition, there is 1 GB of RAM and Mali-400MP graphics on board.

Productivity and Communications

The hardware implemented here is quite enough to play Full HD video or run resource-intensive games.

And here are the results of testing using several specialized utilities.

An inexpensive “plafond” may be quite in demand today, since users often prefer the convenience of surfing the Internet over compact size and common sense. The Lenovo A850 costs a little over 2,000 hryvnia. Moreover, it has a 5.5-inch IPS screen. And a quad-core processor to boot. And it supports two SIM cards.

Design and ergonomics

About convenience, we can only say one thing: if you like “plafonds”, then you will like them; if you consider them funny manifestations of human complexes, then it’s unlikely. Lenovo A850 is not the largest “spade” on the market, but one of the most affordable among those whose diagonal is off scale. 5.5 inches. Quite a lot.

This Android phone is typical, only big. With rounded corners, quite flat (9.5 millimeters), but at the same time weighty (184 grams). For me, traditionally, there is too much of it: the size of my palm is somewhat lacking, and it is inconvenient for me to handle it with one hand, despite the very flexible and mobile fingers that, apparently for fun, nature has endowed me with. But with two hands, as with a small tablet, it’s quite possible.

You just need to hold the smartphone firmly: due to the glossy plastic coating of the back, the A850 tends to slip out of your hands. This backrest is removable and may crack slightly when pressed, but it fits quite tightly. In the lower right corner you can find a nail hook with which you can separate the cover from the smartphone. Underneath is a large removable battery, two slots for full-size SIM cards, designed so that “cut” ones can be neatly inserted into them, as well as a hole for microSD. A memory card or SIM card can be placed in the slots without removing the battery, but you cannot remove them without this operation. Regarding SIM cards, this is, of course, not scary, but for a memory card I would like to have hot swap. However, a removable battery is already very good.

The volume buttons are located on the right, the audio jack and the power key are on the top end, and the microUSB for charging is on the bottom.

Like other Lenovo smartphones, the Android touch control buttons are located not on the screen, but below it.

Screen

5.5 inches in budget smartphone- that's already good. True, the resolution of this giant is only 540x960 pixels. So the pixels are visible, although I can’t say that they are annoying. In fact, the picture looks quite smooth, pleasing to the eye. Thanks to the discreet colors, fairly high brightness and adequate display contrast. According to the characteristics, the smartphone has a matrix made using IPS technology. In principle, you believe this, only one thing is alarming: if you tilt the smartphone up or down in landscape orientation, the colors are inverted. This is especially noticeable when watching movies. But the deviation of the gaze relative to the other axis does not affect the quality of the picture in any way.

The screen sensor does not slow down and responds to five simultaneous presses. On these frosty days, we were able to verify its performance in the cold (at -10 degrees Celsius there were no problems). In a word, in its price category, such a display is completely justified, and with a low resolution it is quite possible to come to terms with it. If it were higher, the Mali-400 video card would have a really hard time!

Camera and sound

At first glance, the manufacturer was greedy by installing a five-megapixel sensor in the A850. However, if you look away from the numbers and move on to the facts, it becomes clear that there is not much difference between five and eight megapixels in the budget sector. So this is quite the right way to save money! The camera, however, has nothing special to brag about. There is a flash, there is HDR... But this is a very simple sensor, so you shouldn’t expect magical photo quality. Here's a couple for you.

The sound in the smartphone is normal, no different from smartphones on this platform.

System and autonomy

Lenovo smartphone works under Android control 4.2 with Lenovo Launcher shell. That is, on the initial desktop we can immediately see application icons, but it is possible to install widgets. Panel quick access organized in exactly the same way as other Lenovo smartphones. Here you can see recent actions, configure Wi-Fi and others wireless technologies, and also go to full settings. Among the branded decorations, various icon designs and animations of desktop transitions were noticed. Well, among useful programs installed by default, I would like to once again note the convenient file manager, where you can find documents not only by location, but also by file type.

The Lenovo Nutrition program is very good, if you get confused, of course. It allows you to set up different power modes, view what is eating up the battery the most (at the software and hardware levels), and set up on and off schedules (for example, during sleep). By “smart settings” the program means optimizing the screen lock (you can disable some applications, and add others to White list; these will be in memory all the time until you evict them from there with your own hands), turning off network connections, controlling the auto-backlight and switching the mode depending on the charge (low charge - just switched to economy mode). Among the settings, I noticed the activation of smart energy saving. According to the description, when it is turned on, a self-learning process begins for more accurate energy saving.

It’s interesting, but in practice I was not able to evaluate the advantages of this function. In fact, if you study all this, the smartphone can be configured to work for a very long time, like for an Android device. So, I managed to work with him for three days in economy mode(conversations, letters, a little internet, clips). But usually it lasts for a day and a half. Movies in 720p can be watched for about 5-6 hours at average screen brightness.

Performance

Lenovo A850 is powered by MediaTek MTK platform and MT6582M processor. This well-known processor is made using a 28-nanometer process technology and has four ARM Cortex A7 cores, each of which operates at a frequency of 1.3 GHz. It is paired with a Mali-400MP GPU and another gigabyte of RAM. In fact, what we have in front of us is a typical fast budget employee of the last year. The device works quite quickly. Both at the interface level and at the application level. Most 3D games ran without problems. In particular, I tried Dead Trigger 2, Temple Run 2, Asphalt 7, Dragon Age, Sonic Dash, Moto. The only application that did not work correctly (already traditionally) was Real Racing 3. Most likely, it lacked system memory(alas, the storage is limited to 4 GB), and the traditional transfer from system memory to external memory is either not implemented in this smartphone or is hidden. Very strange! In all other new Lenovo devices, this function worked (although this operation could not be performed with all programs). But there is an auto-cleaning function designed to unload applications from RAM memory. Below you can see the results of a couple of tests. No surprises, average performance in both graphical applications and HTML5 (Vellamo). It so happened that while testing the smartphone, I was sick and spent time mainly in bed. The Lenovo A850 was very useful to me there: I used it as a video player. To do this, I armed myself with headphones and the Random Film application, which selects a random movie to watch. To my surprise, this program not only offered popular hits, but somehow found out what I liked, and even featured my favorite films a couple of times. This scares me a little, frankly speaking, but this is not about that now, but about the fact that the Lenovo A850 did an excellent job as a video player, even without special effort played movies from the Internet in 720p resolution. With FullHD everything was not so rosy. So, a heavy film in mkv was pretty slow. Although the other one went without problems. The tests were carried out mainly with the help of a friend of all movie lovers on Android called MX Player.

Competitors

There are not so many budget lamps (except for the Chinese noname), but they exist. The most interesting among them is the smartphone with the stuttering name LG G Pro Lite. This is also a dual-SIM phone, also with a 5.5-inch screen, with the same resolution of 960x540 pixels. Its screen is a little brighter, for my taste it has too much color, unlike the hero of the review, but there are many people who find such bright colors more attractive than “pale and calm”. LG's competitor is somewhat weaker in performance: it is also based on the Mediatek platform, but the processor here is a dual-core MT6577. The competitor looks somewhat more expensive and prestigious, moreover, it is equipped with a stylus that is more than dubious in terms of applicability. The competitor’s camera is also more interesting, and also has eight megapixels. But Lenovo costs on average 500 hryvnia cheaper. I would also like to mention the Fly IQ451 Vista with a 5-inch diagonal and a resolution of 1280x720 pixels. The device runs on MT6589 and, in theory, is somewhat slower than the hero of the review. But Acer Liquid S1, on the contrary, is a little faster with a 5.7-inch screen (1280x720 pixels). True, it costs more, about 3000 hryvnia.

Bottom line

Lenovo A850 is able to make happy those who want to buy a lamp for little money. This large and convenient smartphone is fast enough to satisfy those who like to game on a smartphone (although not all games will run perfectly), and especially for those who surf the Internet a lot and watch from mobile device movies. Fortunately, the A850 works for a long time, and if you play tricks with it properly, you can get a completely long-lasting and fast smartphone budget price category.

Conclusion.
Not a bad phone for a low price. This smartphone like a workhorse. No frills. Well built, self-contained.
The camera is bad, but does everyone need it? Controversial issue.

IN this moment buying this smartphone makes no sense due to the release of Lenovo A850+ with an 8-core processor.
