First! 8 E-Ink book TB-138 with WiFi! teXet presents the first Russian market 8-inch e-reader with E-Ink display. In addition to an easy-to-read screen, the new product has a WiFi module that is responsible for connecting to the Internet.

The functionality of teXet TB-138 is not limited to classic reading; thanks to the built-in WiFi module, users can freely navigate the Internet, read online electronic versions of magazines and expand their library without connecting to a computer. You can now download the literature you are interested in anywhere there is a WiFi access point. The device can unpack archived RAR files and ZIP, so you can start reading immediately after the book is loaded into the memory of the new product.

Large by the standards of E-Ink readers, the TB-138 screen with a diagonal of 8 inches and a high resolution of 1024x768 pixels is made using electronic ink technology: the image imitates printing on a regular paper sheet. High quality picture consists of 16 shades of gray, which makes it possible not only to work with text, but also to view illustrations and photographs in black and white.

Like most e-books teXet, the new product understands an impressive number of text formats, including the most popular DOC and DJVU, and reproduces images (JPG, BMP, GIF, PNG).

teXet TB-138 has a wide range of tools for text design: the device displays bold, underlined and even strikethrough five font options (Arial, Arial Black, Calibri, Times New Roman, Verdana), allows you to select the optimal letter size? and thanks to the improved software displays contents, footnotes, recognizes epigraphs and stanzas.

For a truly comfortable reading experience, the new product features a variety of useful functions: auto mode text viewing, 360° rotation, saving/deleting bookmarks, copying/deleting files without connecting to a PC. Users can optionally set an interval for turning off if the book is not used for a long time, and locking the buttons will protect the TB-138 from accidental presses.

The device has 4 GB of internal memory for storing content. This space can be easily expanded using microSD/SDHC cards up to 16 GB, as well as using a USB drive via OTG-Host (cable not included).

Thanks to the capacious Li-Pol battery, teXet TB-138 can operate for a long time without additional power; one battery charge is enough to view more than 10,000 pages.

The e-reader is housed in a thin case with a soft touch coating that is pleasant to the touch. In addition to the microUSB cable and network adapter, the kit includes a new branded teXet case. The thin cover reliably protects the e-book from scratches and other damage.

teXet TB-138 is no longer a narrowly targeted device, but a multifunctional reader that opens up new opportunities for working with text and access to the Internet. The convenient arrangement of functional elements, a large 8-inch display and a discreet, thoughtful design promise the most comfortable communication with an e-reader.

E-reader Texet TB-418FL: 8 inches with backlight

In a natural effort to catch up and overtake competitors, Texet relied on a large screen, releasing the TB-418FL model with an 8-inch diagonal and high resolution classic display E-Ink Pearl. In addition to innovative big screen, making reading e-books comparable to paper ones in terms of page size, the device is equipped with a backlight. Its soft bluish light can be adjusted to 8 brightness levels for reading in any conditions - from bright sun to complete darkness. Turning off the backlight will significantly save battery power and allow you to think less about charging it. A large number of supported formats and 4 GB flash memory will allow you to store an entire library on board, supplementing it with an SD card if necessary. The included thin cover, soft touch coating and duplicated paging keys inspire hopes for the most comfortable reading, but here it is, a spoiler: they did not materialize.

Delivery set and appearance

The packaging attracts attention with bright contrasts: on a white background we see a black reader and the red and blue symbols of the Texet company. In addition to the model name, its key characteristics are indicated on the front side: 8-inch high-resolution screen, 4 GB of internal memory, backlight and support microSD cards. The back of the box is traditionally dedicated to technical details in 12 languages, with more detailed descriptions for Russian and English.

Inside we see the same white cardboard and bright colors: on the inside of the lid, on the documentation packaging, and even on the case with the charger and cable. The book itself, in classic black, comes complete with a black cover.

The outside of the case is made of artificial leather, and the inside resembles suede. Instead of latches, it has two adhesive strips that will hold the e-reader in place. It is unclear whether they provide reuse or the desire to remove a book from its cover can only be realized once.

Unfortunately, Texet is in no hurry to introduce a “smart cover”, although this would not hurt the TB-418FL model at all, which we will return to below.

The book is covered with soft touch plastic and does not look bulky due to its small thickness and thin frames around the screen. The side paging keys are duplicated on the right and left, which makes the book convenient to operate with one hand (however, given its dimensions and weight, this will only be of interest to a male audience). The control buttons under the screen are unusually shifted to the right for the sake of the Texet logo, which bothers us as inveterate perfectionists. The key assignments differ from those typical of competitors: the Home button is followed by a Zoom function, followed by a slightly modified 5-way joystick and the Menu and Return buttons. As it turned out, the second button partially took over the “Menu” function, but the decision seemed controversial to us.

On the bottom edge there are clear and practical connectors for a Micro-USB cable and microSD/SDHC memory cards, as well as a tiny power button. The recessed Reset button seems to have crawled from the edge of the device to the back panel.

The assembly of the case is of such high quality that it seems like a solid block - there is no play or creaking. The buttons are pressed easily and clearly, but we found sharp clicks irritating - perhaps we are supposed to read a book exclusively while listening to music or on public transport.

Screen

Texet has released a book with a large E-Ink screen: an 8-inch diagonal and an HD resolution of 1024×768 bring the e-book as close as possible to a paper one. However, an ordinary printed publication does not have the habit of publishing scraps of text from the previous page among orderly rows of letters, but Texet’s electronic ink is guilty of this. Having turned on the book, we only managed to go to one section and return when we received a mixture of two images, and attempts to go somewhere else to update the screen completely led to the device freezing. After turning it on again, we continued to observe residual traces when navigating through menu sections, but in reading mode the screen was updated “clean up.” On the other hand, changing pages itself takes almost a second, and this blinking turned out to be very tiring for the eyes - there are competitors on the market who are more nimble in this regard.

The display of text also caused us complaints: the letters seemed to lack color saturation, and we wanted to find the image contrast settings. For example, when you launch the reader, the Texet slogan is frankly blurred, as if there is no talk of any HD screen. To justify the device, let's say that during the actual reading you quickly forget about it - as if we were reading an inexpensive pocket-sized book or newspaper.

The built-in backlight is a big plus for such a device, however, the Texet TB-418FL suffers, like many other e-readers, from a lack of minimum brightness level. With eight levels of adjustment, the brightness remained excessive, in our opinion, even at level 1. In its defense, it reads the same in the dark as it does in a lit room, so you can read in bed before bed without disturbing your partner/cat/anyone. Maximum brightness is intended for use in bright sunlight, so the device can also help out on the beach.

Firmware

Having gone into the book's settings, we found out the current firmware version - V.1.0.0 - judging by the name, the first. Having found an archive with firmware on the official website, we did not find a hint of an update in its name, but still decided to install new version manually, fortunately the instructions were included with the archive. After fighting a little with the LiveSuit program, we successfully installed, as it turned out, the same first and only version of the software.

Main screen

The main screen in Texet is one of the most intuitive, as are the controls in general. There is no need to go into subsections and scroll through the screen, all key elements are displayed in a column with icons on the right side of the screen, and on the left we see the current time, date and day of the week.

So, on the “desktop” of the reader we see the following sections: History, Books, Photos, Files, Favorites, Calendar, Guide and Options. This list cannot be changed, so you will have to get used to scrolling to the desired item each time. Since the main screen does not provide a link to the last opened book, to continue reading after turning on the device, you will need to go to the “History” section. It is also as simple as possible: icons of the latest open books without any sorting or display settings.

We weren't able to use it for long, because it's easier to go all the way through the file manager than to endure endless freezes associated with the device's attempts to display book covers on icons. In the photo below you can see one cover. It took a little less than a minute to display it, and all this time the e-book did not respond to any commands (including exiting the ill-fated section).

Library

In this model, this section is called “Books” and is, along with “Photos,” part file manager with a single structure. For this reason, when entering any mentioned section, we must each time go through the full path from selecting the data storage location ( inner memory or map) to the desired subfolder. It's good if your memory card will only be used for this device and contain a convenient structure, but if you want to rearrange it, for example, from a smartphone where you downloaded the necessary books, then you will have to regularly go through rather tedious steps of selecting folders.

When we finally got to the folder with books, we discovered that by pressing the “Menu” button you can change the view from icons to a list and back, and that’s where the personalization options end. The list view has an advantage - you can immediately see both the name and the file format, while the icon view cuts off both. Also, during testing, it was discovered that the icon view tries to show book covers (for example, for the EPUB format), which causes the device to slow down and even freeze.

Photo

The offshoot of the file manager for viewing images also offers only viewing functions, and also allows you to set the automatic transition time and screen rotation for an open image. We successfully opened all four declared formats (JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP), but the quality of what we saw on the screen seemed even worse to us than we are used to seeing on E-Ink displays with 16 shades of gray - apparently due to the larger diagonal of the display.

Files

This menu item gives access to all supported file formats with the ability to move, delete and sort them using the “Menu” button. The latter amazes the imagination with the richness of its options: “A-Z” and “Z-A”.

Favorites

IN this section can store up to nine text files added to it from reading mode. To do this, after opening the file, you need to press the “Menu” button and select the “Add to Favorites” option. There is nothing you can do with the files in the section itself, so when the limit is reached, the most old file will be replaced with a new one.

Calendar

The application allows you to view the current month and scroll through months and years forward and backward, but nothing more.

Management

Menu item that opens when clicked electronic version user manuals. It includes content that makes it easy to navigate through sections, and generally shows well all the capabilities of the device.

Options

That's what the settings are called here, and they are as minimalistic as the rest of the functionality. The “Language” item offers a choice of English and Russian, “Date and Time” allows you to set the date and time in the same barbaric way, which will be described below.

“Auto shutdown” is perhaps the most surprising feature of Texet: if you select one of five intervals, the book will turn off after specified time regardless of whether you are using it at that moment or not. Reviews on the manufacturer's official website point to this glaring flaw, forcing users to turn off the book only manually, but the official answer is that there are no plans to correct the error. Since the energy saving mode, also known as sleep mode, is completely absent here, you are left with a choice between quickly draining the battery and the constant ritual of turning it on and off.

The following menu items allow you to clear your history and reset your book settings. The “Information” item reports the model, software version, memory status and release date. It is curious that the book remembers itself before birth: the release date is later than the current date in the system at the time the book was submitted for testing. :)

Finally, “Backlight” offers you to choose a brightness level or turn it off.

Reading mode

Texet TB-418FL has one reader installed for working with text files, which successfully opens all the promised formats, and there are many of them: FB2, TXT, PDF, EPUB, HTML, RTF, PDB, CHM, DJVU, MOBI, DOC, PALMDOC. The procedure for working with any file is the same: you can turn pages using either the side keys or the joystick, context menu is called by the corresponding button, and the “Zoom” button opens four additional settings. For standard text file, for example, books in EPUB format, we found the following menu options: going to a given page, working with bookmarks, setting the time for automatic transition to the next page, rotating the screen, one-time screen refresh, inversion mode and adding a file to Favorites.

To go to any page of a book, you need to enter its number using only the joystick: pressing up and down will increase and decrease the values, and pressing right and left will change the digit. For example, to go to page 129 you will need “only” 7 clicks: first enter the number 9 with the “down” button, then move to the left and enter the number 2, then further to the left to the hundreds place and enter the number 1, at the end we confirm with the central “OK” button . Setting the time and date occurs in exactly the same way. What century is it in our yard?..

Working with bookmarks involves creating, opening and deleting them, with only five bookmarks available for each text file. There is no centralized access to bookmarks, so their appearance is as simple as possible and does not even include the book title at the top. The usefulness of this function is vanishingly small, since the name of the bookmark does not include a passage of text - we only see the page number.

Clicking on the “Change Zoom” button allows us to go to the contents of the file, change the font size and type, and also adjust the backlight while reading.

There are 4 font types available (there is a micro-preview of two letters) and 5 sizes: from very small to very large. Interestingly, they differ slightly depending on the file format: for example, at the maximum font size in EPUB, 12 lines fit on the screen, and in FB2 - 1 line more. The time to use a different font or size is also different: in the same EPUB it happened about 4 times faster than in FB2. Of all the possible combinations, the “small” Arial seemed to us the most readable.

Despite the impressive screen size, working with DJVU and PDF turned out to be no more convenient than on the most compact devices. Firstly, the poverty of the reading mode settings interferes, and secondly, incorrect work available. For example, in both formats we absolutely lacked contrast, and it cannot be changed. When we decided to at least increase the scale to a readable size, all our experiments with font size yielded only 2 options: small and very small, and they were only suitable for reading with a lens. For dessert, we also got a freeze in the process of turning pages: first, the screen appeared to be a mess of letters and drawings, then there was no reaction to button presses, and instead of honestly shutting down, the book quickly showed a splash screen and innocently opened the main screen. Bottom line: you won’t be able to scale large documents, but if you have a magnifying glass and patience, you will have time to read something - before the next freeze.

Energy consumption

Declared by the manufacturer in technical documentation 7,000 screen updates, judging by user reviews on the Internet and our feelings during testing, are somewhat overestimated. In addition to this, on the official website the model description generally lists 8,000 updates, which misleads the buyer. While charging from a PC via USB cable, we were surprised that just 30 minutes was enough for the battery indicator to show a full charge. We were even more surprised when, within the same 30 minutes of operation, the battery discharged back from three to one bar. In the instructions, the manufacturer warns against incomplete charging and partial discharging, but the realities of life often force e-book users to resort to just such formats.

When we honestly let the battery fully charge, it only lasted 1 (one) day at the minimum backlight level. This result discouraged us: the manufacturer warned that the use of backlight significantly shortens the period battery life, but not as much. As a result, our advice to all buyers: be prepared Charger and don't be afraid to use it.

In this comparison, Texet has only three advantages: a larger screen diagonal, more capacious battery and a full set of accessories. The disadvantages are more significant: when working with backlighting, the battery is discharged in 1 day, the screen resolution remains at the level of other competitors, and the dimensions of the device are significantly larger. Considering its price positioning, any of its closest competitors looks more attractive due to its well-developed firmware, and Pocketbook and Amazon additionally offer built-in Wi-Fi module and touch screen.

pros

  • support most formats
  • large high resolution screen
  • adjustable backlight

Minuses

  • regular braking and freezing
  • Fast battery drain using backlight
  • high price for existing functionality

Summary

Texet TB-418FL, sadly enough, turned out to be a continuous source of irritation: constant slowdowns and freezes when displayed with icons rather than a list; the lack of opening the last book immediately after turning it on, extremely limited reading mode settings and an absolutely illogical auto-shutdown killed all the comfort of reading from the big screen. In our opinion, the only way to use the device with pleasure is to read fiction in the most popular formats without turning off the book, and charge it daily. So, our conclusion is banal, but true: appearance alone without decent content is not enough for a strong relationship.

Change the firmware to eliminate freezes with the view of files with icons and when working with PDF documents and DJVU, expand the reading mode settings, and also fix a bug with auto-shutdown right during the reading process.

Good day to all readers!

About a year ago I started thinking about buying a tablet. Purpose: reading books and surfing the Internet. At first I was choosing between well-known brands, such as Asus, Lenovo, Samsung, etc. But after a sudden rise in price, I had to lower the bar a little to domestic manufacturers.

In the end, I formed several requirements for applicants:

1) good memory(at least 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal space). I didn't want to buy a memory card.

2) 7-8 inches IPS screen with good resolution.

3) large battery capacity.

The TEXET X-pad AIR 8 3G 16 GB suited all the parameters, which I purchased from DNS for 6,490 rubles.

Main characteristics with my comments:

Screen

7.85", 1024x768, IPS, dual-core Mali-400MP2 graphics processor

This is not a shabby little screen. For some reason, from photographs on the Internet, 7-inch tablets seemed small to me, although they looked quite decent on the display case. Most likely, 7 inches is suitable for reading, and 7.85" is more suitable for watching movies and videos, although any movie in the browser does not open in full screen.

I can’t say anything about the resolution - it’s not bad, but it could be better. Individual pixels are not visible, but after watching a movie in Full HD on TV, the screen scratches the eye

Android

Version 4.2. Not new, but I don't chase new products.

CPU

Quad-core, MediaTek MT8382, 1.3 GHz. It works quickly, without failures for half a year.

Memory

RAM - 1 GB, out of 16 GB internal, a little more than 11 GB is free. I have enough for everything, 7 GB is still free.

Battery

Li-Ion, 5200 mAh. This is a LOT for a tablet, I have never seen anyone else use it. Enough for 1 day of watching movies and games. If you just read from your tablet and occasionally go online, about 3 days will be enough.

Camera

Main: 2 MP, front: 0.3 MP. The numbers are deplorable, even more on my ancient phone. But the camera is actually not really needed. My main one is always covered with a cover, but I don’t like taking selfies. You can improve the quality using different applications and filters. The camera also has the ability to respond to voice: say “capture” or “cheese” and get a picture. This function is a great mood lifter because... You need to speak as clearly as possible and without an accent.

Other

There is a phone function, a slot for a regular-sized SIM card. Moreover, the connector is very strange; in order to insert a SIM card, you need to use a pin or a paper clip to poke around in the small hole nearby. Somehow this is all a chore, so I never inserted a SIM card. And due to the size of the tablet, it is inconvenient to use for calls.

On the top right is the on button (a little loose), a headphone jack (included, but not the best quality, after a couple of months of use, the sound in one spontaneously becomes quieter, then louder), memory card slot (micro, up to 32 GB, nothing not covered, also untested), USB (aka charging). Here I have small complaints, because... The charger does not fit into the socket tightly, the slot may soon break.

There are 3, if I'm not mistaken, dynamics. Two on the bottom of the back cover, one under the front camera. The sound is not bad, but if you want to watch a movie while someone in the next room is watching football/listening to the radio, you most likely won't hear much. Headphones fix everything.

Once I called a friend on Skype, the sound came through the top speaker, and it was very quiet; in order to hear the words you had to bring the tablet to your ear (imagine what the interlocutor saw at that moment).

To make the tablet look richer, the manufacturer made back cover made of metal (or simply skewed to look like metal, because it scratches just like plastic), plus all the solidity is destroyed by the inscription “Made in China” on the bottom of the lid.

It gets a little hot during operation, but not much.

Overall I'm happy with the tablet. In 6 months no changes were observed.

Thank you for your attention!

The idea to show 3 tablets at once in one video arose spontaneously. First I wanted to get acquainted with the new Texet TM-8041HD tablet, equipped with an 8-inch display, with the same characteristics as iPad mini. It turned out that it is possible to hold 3 devices in your hands at once, with the same design and characteristics, but different screen diagonals, namely 7, 8 and 9.7 inches.

To be precise, we are talking about Texet 7043XD, 8041HD and made in the same style. An interesting combination of a dual-core processor was chosen as the filling for the entire series Amlogic AML8726-MX with a frequency of 1.5 GHz and dual-core graphics Mali-400MP, seasoned 1GB random access memory . Considering Texet’s pricing policy, the solution is very promising...

Thanks to the fact that all 3 tablets are available at once, we had the opportunity to compare the 3 most popular screen diagonals in the world, and due to the same filling, also see how display resolution affects graphics performance.

As I already noted, all 3 tablets are made in the same style and design. Interestingly, the back is made of aluminum, making the body look monolithic. It’s a pity that this beauty is hidden under the black leather case that comes with the kit). Among the pleasant bonuses, we can note the fresh Android versions 4.1., main 2 megapixel cameras (albeit without flash) and VGA front cameras on 7″ and 8″ inch devices. The largest device is already equipped with a 2 megapixel front camera.

The delivery set is also uniform. It is worth noting here the presence of an OTG “tail”, thanks to which you can connect external USB drives. Not enough for complete happiness HDMI cable on a TV, however, it is rarely included even with much more expensive devices.

So, the screens are: 7″, widescreen 16:10 with a resolution of 1280x800 pixels, 8″ - almost square 4:3 - 1024x768 pixels and 9.7″ 4:3, also having 1024x768 pixels. For understanding and analogy, you can compare the resolution and diagonals of these devices with Google Nexus 7, iPad mini and iPad 2, in the same order!

As for performance - the average Antutu result is about 9000 for a resolution of 1024x768 and 8000 for a resolution of 1280x800 - very good for an inexpensive line of devices, putting them on the same level as last year's flagships. For comparison, mine Samsung Galaxy S2 on dual-core Exynos showed even more modest results!

But with a drop in productivity of more than high resolution Texet 7043XD has an interesting pattern - it decreased PROPORTIONAL to the increase in the number of pixels - by about 15%. Now it’s clear how much graphics for the iPad with Retina costs Apple)

And finally - the dimensions. I still haven't decided which screen format I like best. If you hold a 7-inch baby in your hands, you get great pleasure from the display and the ability to put the tablet in your jeans pocket. 8 inch tablet I like the balance of size and feel, and the difference in pixel density is almost invisible. If we talk about 9.7″, it loses in comparison. The iPad 2 display, which was once the standard, is beginning to yield in quality to more compact devices. This is noticeable if you look from one tablet to another, and almost doesn’t bother you if you don’t look closely at it. From the point of view of convenience, almost 10″ is ideal in my opinion, but everyone can have their own opinion on this matter...

And now, after watching, I would like to know your opinion: what diagonal and what screen resolution for a tablet in your opinion are optimal? We are talking specifically about tablets (7″ - 10″) and precisely the OPTIMAL resolution for comfortable work... As usual, please leave your opinion in the comments.
