Asus is committed to creating products with the most user-friendly interface possible. However, setting up the asus wl 520gc router will be easier using the instructions below.

The working area of the Asus WL-520GC router is 850 meters without taking into account possible interference and obstacles.

Worth stopping at brief overview the model itself. This router is a good budget solution entry-level with simple and intuitive controls. That is, the asus wl 520gc router – perfect solution for home or cottage. The device is a kind of remake of the original WL-520G.

The working area of the router is about 850 meters, excluding possible interference and obstacles.

At the same time, it supports an interesting technology called WDS - Wireless Distribution System, thanks to which, if you have a system of such devices, you can extend the coverage area to up to a kilometer! The only thing that can spoil the pleasure of the purchase is the lack of official Russian-language documentation for setting up the device. The need to install unofficial software in order to fully unlock the gadget’s potential does not add any advantages. But overall, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

Setting up an Internet connection

Before directly setting up an Internet connection, you need to open the main web interface of the router. The procedure is quite standard for most routers, and such unification only plays into the hands of users. You need to enter the following address (1) into the browser you usually use and click on it. Before logging in, you will be asked to fill out the “Username” and “Password” fields. By default they are the same - the word “admin”. Of course, for security reasons, it will be necessary to change this data in the future, which will be discussed later. Click "Accept".

In the menu that opens, follow this path: “IP Configuration” – WAN & LAN.

By selecting the “PPPoE connection setup” option, you need to configure the parameters according to this scheme. Check the boxes “Obtain a WAN IP address automatically” and “Connect to a DNS server automatically.” In the “Username” and “Password” columns, you must enter similar data from the agreement with your Internet provider. If certain difficulties arise with this point, it is better to immediately call technical support the relevant company. MTU – 1472. Save the settings by clicking the “Apply” button.

In this case, for the option with automatic setting of the IP value (DCHP), you just need to select the connection method of the same name, and the router firmware will do the rest on its own.

If you don’t want to delve into the electronics of the device at all, you can download ASUS EZSetup, a program for automatic settings connections. It is on the CD that comes with the package.

Setting up and changing your password

Despite the fact that the WL-520GC is equipped with a whole range of protective measures - a firewall and multi-level filtering, do not forget about simple protection against access through a specific user’s PC.

How to configure a router not only in terms of wireless communication, but also the protection of transmitted data is an important question that can be answered by learning how to set up a password.

To do this you need the following:

  1. In the main menu of the router, go to the “ System Settings", and then - in "Change password".
  2. In the “New Password” field, you can insert a created code word of no more than 63 characters in length and without using the Cyrillic alphabet.
  3. Next you will have to repeat it.

Creating a working Wi-Fi network

The main functional accessory of modern routers is uninterrupted, stable and high-speed Wi-Fi, access to which will be provided throughout the signal distribution area. By the way, this gadget does not support the recently introduced 3G mobile Internet format.

You can learn how to configure the asus wl 520gc router to distribute a wireless connection using the following algorithm.

After repeating step 1 in the operation for setting up an Internet connection, select “ Wireless connection", and in the drop-down list - "Interface".

Enter the following values in the parameters that appear:

  1. In the SSID column, you must enter the desired name of the future Wi-Fi network (this parameter affects solely the convenience of finding it among a large number of similar networks).
  2. “Authentication method” – WPA or WPA 2 (the most secure encryption protocols).
  3. “WPA encryption” – TKIP + AES.
  4. The “WPA key” is the same as the password; it is desirable that it differs from the similar one for entering the main interface.
  5. Save your changes.

The “WPA key” will need to be specified to everyone who wants to connect to your work network.

Saving settings

To ensure that setting up the wl 520gc router does not turn into a monthly ritual, it would be useful to create separate file with all the entered parameters in order to have access to them in case of a breakdown of the router or any malfunctions with the PC.

After several wifi reviews access points and wireless communications adapters, we paid attention to more promising and thorough implementations of wireless equipment.

Network routers can rightfully be considered a compact hardware implementation of access servers to network segments. This decision raises new level quality of customer service by collecting all the new technological capabilities for building communication communications. Usually, if configured correctly, they allow you to completely protect yourself from various types of penetrations, interference, hacking and attacks on information circulating or stored in your local network segment. Provide good speed data transfer with packet encryption enabled, due to fairly fast filling. Such routers organize virtual encrypted channels that are invisible to the user and highly protected from third-party penetration. It is multifunctional solutions for small businesses and home networks that allow even an inexperienced user to easily connect several PCs to each other and their secure access to an external network.

One of the inexpensive representatives of this class of equipment is the one being reviewed today. Wi-Fi router WL-520GC from ASUS. This model received from the developers two new technologies 125HSM and BroadRange, which provide an increase in wireless network coverage by up to 300% and an increase in data transfer speed by 35% compared to 802.11g.

Products webpage

The characteristics were collected from the information presented on the manufacturer’s website and from the actual capabilities of the built-in WEB interface the router under test itself.

Package

The outer packaging is made of thick cardboard, in corporate gray and white tones, with small blue design elements that stand out in contrast against the general background. The left part can tell the buyer about the standards and methods of their implementation supported by this product. Some described here special abilities, developed by the manufacturer, are designed to make it easier for the buyer to configure this router and choose a method of protection against unauthorized eavesdropping of the wireless line, as well as unwanted connections to the user’s network.

On the reverse side, the manufacturer tried to place some elements of the specification of this model and a brief diagram of connecting this product to the end user’s network.

Equipment

The ASUS WL-520GC model's equipment is quite sufficient; everything you need for work is present.

The kit contains:

Router W.L.-520GC

Like most models of various equipment from ASUS, this solution has a plastic case, made in black and silver tones with transparent inserts and a thoughtful design of the heat dissipation grille. Everything is quite practical, high quality and strict.

The reverse side is also not distinguished by its original design. Features include the ability to mount this router on a wall, as well as a small omnidirectional antenna installed by the manufacturer. You shouldn’t really hope for a long range from a cheap pre-installed antenna, but according to the developers, it should exceed the communication range of comparable competitors. But if you wish, you can change it too. There are a lot of options for different purposes and types of additional antennas, at a fairly inexpensive price, and if you need to receive or transmit a signal over long distances, you can always replace the antenna with a better one.

On the back there are a number of connectors and interesting elements. Looking at this sample from left to right, the first thing we see is the pre-installed antenna, then there is the red button for the fast technology ASUS settings EZSetup and black - reset settings (return to factory settings). Reset is performed by pressing this button for more than five seconds while the device is turned on. Next are the connectors for connecting local Fast Ethernet network equipment (LAN-LAN3), and at the end of their row there is a connector for connecting this router to a segment of an external Fast Ethernet network (technologically called WAN) and the end of this chain is the socket for connecting the power supply.

On the front panel of the device there are signed indicators of the operation of this model. There is an indication of power supply to the device, blinking activity diodes of the WLAN, WAN, LAN-LAN3 interfaces of this router.

Software.

The developers have provided two ways quick setup this router. The first, and simplest of them, is EZSetup technology, which allows the user to set up a secure wireless network in a few mouse clicks, through an additional installation on your computer. software and a button (EZSetup) on the back. The second was a Web interface with a small sequential algorithm for setting up a “quick start”.

Starting from this tab, the easy-to-understand step-by-step setup mode (Quick Setup) will help even the inexperienced network technologies user, high-quality and easy to configure this model for normal operation of the network router.

But the most flexible and functional for creating the configuration of the router under review were the remaining items of the same Web interface, designed quite thoughtfully and conveniently.

In the Interface menu item of the Wireless tab, you can set the name of the connection, which appears as the name of the network when connecting to it, set the channel number to which clients can connect, the mode Wi-Fi work interface (Auto, 54G Only, 802.11B Only) and the authorization method for such connections. Based on the selected authorization method, the radio channel encryption method is set. Supported encryption and authentication standards are listed in the specifications table above.

On the Bridge page of the Wireless tab, you can set the operating mode with the corresponding MAC addresses remote bridge points and the number of channels used for this type of connection.

Wireless - Access Control allows you to set a list of MAC addresses of clients who are allowed or denied access to this router.

Wireless - RADIUS Setting Here you can set the IP address, port and password for authorization on the RADIUS server.

On the Wireless – Advanced page, the manufacturer took care to provide the settings as completely as possible Wi-Fi networks: forced setting of connection speed, signal timings, operating modes, etc.

IP Config - WAN & LAN is one of the fundamental settings pages for this router. Posted here full settings connections via WAN interface. Starting from setting the method for obtaining an IP address (statically or dynamically), ending with the ability to configure a VPN client connection option on the incoming interface of the PPPoE or PPTP router.

The DHCP server located in the IP Config menu - DHCP Server received everything standard features settings for such a service. Here it is possible to set the association of the issued IPs with the MAC addresses of connecting clients.

Quite standard IP routing capabilities can be provided by the IP Config – Route page settings.

Under the interesting name of the IP Config tab - Miscellaneous, the manufacturer has placed the ability to set a remote logging server, time zone, time synchronization server, as well as some DDNS client settings with the ability to receive this service on Internet servers.

The NAT Setting tab begins with the Port Trigger menu item, in which you can set port forwarding for incoming packets.

Perhaps a very useful page of the WEB interface may be NAT Setting - Virtual Server. Using the settings of this tab, you can organize secure access to servers for various purposes. local network(HTTP, FTP, DNS and any other services). Any number of them will be pseudo-replaced for external users one virtual server configured on this router and redirecting all requests to the directions specified in the list.

The NAT Setting - Virtual DMZ settings provide a simpler procedure for creating a virtual server located on the local network. The router is put into the mode of forwarding all packets to a specific (one) machine on the network, which performs the functions of the necessary server for external requests.

Internet Firewall - Basic Config here provides basic configuration of settings network protection: enable/disable this function, its initial state (all open or all closed) and WEB setup access via WAN interface.

The Internet Firewall - WAN & LAN Filter WEB interface page provides filtering, with the ability to set the day of the week and time, of outgoing packets with definition of the source IP address, port and transmission protocol.

URL Keyword List here you can set time filtering and URL blocking parameters.

Simple MAC access filter (filtering by MAC addresses)

The System Setup tab items allow you to: set/change a password to access the router management, update the firmware, save locally or download a file with settings, return to the default settings.

The Status & Log tab pages contain: a brief status of WAN and LAN interface settings, WLAN protocol logging, DHCP log, Port Forwarding monitoring, routing table and system event logging. The final tab was the exit point from the WEB management interface.

Summarizing the capabilities of the internal software, we can talk about normal firmware equipment, both for positioning of this device in the segment of business solutions with low load on network communications. There are many popular technologies and capabilities here, but along with the rather extensive firewall settings, it is worth noting the rather limited capabilities for filtering external, unwanted traffic. Its main task was to restrict access local users to the external network and to specific www addresses. In view of this feature of the test subject, protection against attacks from the external network will have to be configured on each machine on the local segment.

Testing

For a test comparison, a competitive model of one market niche was chosen D-Link DI-624. But to a greater extent, the comparison of these two routers was caused by the desire to justify to the buyer the real advantages of the 125HSM and BroadRange technology, references to which are replete with packaging ASUS router WL-520GC. Both the range/quality of the transmitted signal through a rather serious obstacle, and the direct channel capacity of the router itself will be tested. A specific (all the time the same) set of small files totaling 10 MB and one large video file of 70 MB were transferred directly through the test person connected to the file storage via Fast Ethernet 100 Mbit/s to ACER laptop AS5610Z with WLAN network card at a connection speed of 54 Mbit/s and via USB WI-FI adapter DWL-AG132 D-link. The speed graph was taken from the WINDOWS task manager.

Comparative performance testing at connection speed 54 Mbps with line of sight at a distance of two meters.

Transfer of small files with a total amount of 10 MB. Regarding the router from its WAN interface to the WLAN segment. Total time 2 min. 04 s.

Transfer of small files with a total amount of 10 MB. Regarding the router from its WLAN interface to the WAN segment. Total time 1 min. 37 p.

Transfer of small files with a total amount of 10 MB. Regarding the router in its WLAN segment. Total time 2 min. 33 p.

Transfer one file of 70 MB. Regarding the router from its WAN interface to the WLAN segment. Total time 27 s.

Transfer one file of 70 MB. Regarding the router from its WLAN interface to the WAN segment. Total time 27 s.

Transfer one file of 70 MB. Regarding the router in its WLAN segment. Total time 53 s.

There is nothing unexpected in this series of tests. It is quite natural to see high performance on large files and a sharp decrease in speed by an order of magnitude when working with small ones.

Let's compare the results into one table.

You can immediately note a slight speed advantage for D-link, but for the most part these results are equal.

When testing Wi-Fi equipment over long distances, or when the signal passes through tangible obstacles, it is practically impossible to achieve repeatable results. But we still tried to create normal conditions for the signal to pass through 2 floors of a panel, reinforced concrete house. And based on the data obtained, we can formulate conclusions.

ASUS WL-520GC

When transferring one 70 MB file from WLAN to LAN, the speed was 435 Kbps. In the opposite direction from LAN to WLAN for the same file 410 Kbps.

D-Link DI-624

When transferring one 70 MB file from WLAN to LAN, the speed was 485 Kbps. In the opposite direction from LAN to WLAN for the same file 485 Kbps.

The slight advantage that emerged in the first series of tests for the D-Link DI-624 model in the latter, when the signal passed through fairly serious obstacles (several floors of a reinforced concrete building), grew into a stable superiority of this model. The technologies announced by ASUS for increased range and speed of the Wi-Fi network could not help the ASUS WL-520GC model to surpass the fairly inexpensive D-Link DI-624 router. Looking ahead, we note the possibility of a full-fledged firewall for the test subject’s opponent, in relation to the rather reduced functions in the tested sample.

conclusions

The WL-520GC router from ASUS can be recommended as a cheap solution for organizing access to a Fast Ethernet network by connecting via 802.11g wireless networks in home networks that are undemanding in terms of channel width and small office communications. Along with quite good quality operation and normal access speed, this sample has good support from the developer and a very reasonable price for a solution of this level. It is distinguished from its opponent by the fairly easy-to-set up interface of EZSetup technology, which allows the user to set up a secure wireless network in a few mouse clicks, through additional software installed on your computer and a button (EZSetup) on the back side. But, along with these advantages, the built-in software is rather meager and not fully functional in terms of capabilities. firewall and slightly weaker power of the transmitted Wi-Fi signal compared to its direct competitor.

  • Very practical and strict design.
  • Quite small and compact in size.
  • The presence of a small external antenna.
  • A small price to pay for a solution of this level.
  • Good data transfer speed.
  • Easy to configure WEB interface.
  • Support for EZSetup technology.
  • When any changes are applied, the router is completely rebooted.
  • Short range of the device.

We express our gratitude to the companyLLC PF Service(Dnepropetrovsk) for the equipment provided for testing.
