Not so long ago Xiaomi company launched a modification of the Redmi Note 4 smartphone, which is equipped with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of built-in flash memory. Please note that this is an international model intended for sale outside of China. It is not based on a chipset from MediaTek, which did not work well in last year's original model, but on the basis Qualcomm processor. Looking ahead, we’ll immediately say that the difference between these smartphones based on two chipsets and with each amount of RAM is simply colossal.

By the way, at the bottom of the package, in small print, information about a specific modification is written, that is, in this case, Redmi Note 4 with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of ROM in black. To the right is information about the production date – April 2017. It was at this time that the first modifications of this mobile device with increased volume entered the market random access memory.

Inside the package you can find the smartphone itself, on the front of which there is a matte protective film, a proprietary power adapter in black for 2A (5W), a clip for opening the tray for a SIM card, a black MicroUSB cable for charging and synchronizing with a computer, as well as a warranty coupon and very brief instructions. There is nothing else in the box.

First impressions and build quality

Always interesting to keep new smartphone in your hands, especially if it is a Xiaomi product. The thing is that this company has never skimped on the quality of materials and workmanship. Yes, of course there can be a marriage, but this is a one in a million case. Moreover, the likelihood of encountering a defective iPhone is much higher than even a budget smartphone under the Xiaomi brand.

Smartphone Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 has quite impressive dimensions, but the reason for this is the large 5.5-inch screen, which is covered with 2.5D glass. The body of the mobile device is made of metal, but there are plastic parts on the top and bottom of the back cover, under which there are antenna modules.

Let’s say right away that this solution, judging by operating experience, has improved the quality of reception, since in places with poor signal levels this device confidently holds 2-3 antenna poles, while the iPhone SE or iPhone 7 only has one.

On back cover there is a single camera, covered with scratch-resistant protective glass, a double led flash and a fingerprint scanner. On its lower part there is a corporate logo of the manufacturing company, as well as a sticker with information about the model number and place of production. It can be easily peeled off without leaving any marks on the case.

The front of the mobile device boasts a large 5.5-inch display with small side frames. Directly below it are three touch buttons, which are designed for navigation in the operating room. Android system. Above the screen there is an earpiece, a front camera, proximity and light sensors, as well as an LED indicator that lights up in different colors depending on events.

At the bottom end of the metal body of Redmi Note 4 there is a MicroUSB connector, as well as holes for the speaker and microphone. The top of the mobile device has the usual 3.5 mm audio jack, another microphone and an infrared (IR) port that can be used for control household appliances and electronics. The right side houses a volume rocker and a power/lock button. On the left side of the case there is only a slot for two SIM cards, or one SIM card and one MicroSD memory card with a capacity of up to 128 GB.

The body of the smartphone is built very well. Nothing creaks or plays anywhere. All parts are perfectly matched to each other, so the build quality can be given a solid ten. As for the first impression of the smartphone, it is positive. The smartphone fits perfectly in the hand, thanks to the rounded 2.5D glass and rounded edges of the body.

Operating system MIUI 8

When you turn on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 smartphone for the first time, all its owners are greeted by the MIUI 8 operating system, which, as mentioned earlier, is global, so it already contains Russian, Ukrainian and a hundred other languages. In other words, no additional problems with flashing and updating - all updates will arrive “over the air”.

You can talk about the merits of MIUI 8 endlessly, but we will try to fit all the basic facts about this operating system into a few paragraphs. The owner of an iPhone will definitely like it much more than a naked Android. The thing is that in the classic OS from Google the list installed applications and desktops are two completely independent things from each other, whereas in iOS 10 all this is combined into one whole.

The MIUI 8 system is built on the same principle, that is, there is no list of programs - there are only desktops on which icons of all installed software are displayed. You can also place any widgets there.

Appearance The MIUI 8 software add-on does not cause any discomfort or desire to replace it with something else. For example, I want to immediately change the Samsung UI shell in the Galaxy S8 to some Nova Launcher, but most likely it depends on personal preference.

The MIUI 8 operating system pleasantly surprises with its beauty, minimalism and simplicity. Owners of the Redmi Note 4 smartphone can configure everything at their own discretion, spending a minimum of time on this. This is certainly encouraging, since most Android smartphones are susceptible to the disease complex settings, due to which thousands of people end up switching to iPhone.

I would like to believe that the MIUI operating system will continue to develop in this direction further, becoming more convenient, faster and more functional every year. By the way, yes, firmware lovers will be pleased with the huge range of custom operating systems, among which there are Cyanogen Mod builds. This smartphone is a real dream for Android fans.

Screen

After using the smartphone for some time, you can draw conclusions about its IPS screen, which has a large reserve of brightness. Thanks to the latter, information from the screen can be read even in bright daylight. This may be especially true in the summer, when it is light outside most of the time of day.

The saturation and contrast of the Redmi Note 4 screen does not raise any complaints. A matrix with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels (Full HD) perfectly conveys the image without any distortion, and the human eye is not able to see individual pixels on it. At minimum brightness, information from the screen is comfortable to read even in complete darkness.

Viewing angles weak side many budget Xiaomi smartphones, the Redmi Note 4 model is on high level. If you look at the screen of a mobile device from any of the five sides, the picture will continue to remain just as rich and juicy. Speaking about the screen of this smartphone, we can take the example of that in the iPhone 6s Plus. In our opinion, they are comparable in all respects, with the exception of one.

The point is that everything budget smartphones Xiaomi, costing less than $300, does not have a good anti-reflective coating, so if exposed to direct sunlight, the picture may turn out to be almost unreadable. More expensive mobile devices have long used anti-reflective coating to solve this problem, so I would like to see it in the next generation of all smartphones from the Redmi line.

If you evaluate the smartphone screen on a ten-point scale among all IPS matrices, then you can safely give it 9 out of 10. One point was removed due to the lack of this very anti-reflective coating.

Performance

Modifications of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 smartphone based on the MediaTek chipset turned out to be a failure, even despite the attempts of the Chinese corporation to correct the situation with the help of updates. Many processors from this manufacturer actively overheat under heavy load, as a result of which their performance drops significantly. This process is called throttling.

The smartphone model we received for review with 4 GB of RAM and based on an 8-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor has not been confirmed to have this disease. Moreover, make it mobile device warming up well is not an easy task. Obviously, the chipset from the American corporation is much better, more stable and reliable. It generates less heat, requires less energy, and is even slightly more efficient. Until MediaTek learns how to make normal chipsets, I would not like to see its products in future Xiaomi smartphones, as this could mean new problems.

Of course, the Snapdragon 625 chipset is far from the most powerful in the world, but its performance is sufficient to perform all basic tasks. Play GTA San Andreas, World of Tanks Blitz or Minecraft can be played on medium settings with a native resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels (Full HD). Due to the fact that this modification is equipped with 4 GB of RAM, the smartphone can simultaneously keep about two dozen “light” programs open, such as a calculator, mail, instant messenger, etc.

However, it is worth noting that the MIUI 8 operating system has built-in settings designed to automatically unload applications from memory that are not used for a certain period of time. This is very convenient, especially for a novice user, since the automation in the system will not allow you to quickly discharge the battery. You can customize these settings to suit your needs by visiting the section in Settings called “Energy Saving.”

Installing exactly 4 GB of RAM made it possible to turn the Redmi Note 4 smartphone into a premium mid-class device. The device confidently performs all everyday tasks, and in a web browser Google Chrome About 25-30 deposits can be opened at a time and all of them will be in RAM at this moment. This is a good indicator, since even the iPhone 7 cannot do this.

Of course, if possible, then you should buy the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 in the modification with 4 GB of RAM. The price difference is not so big that you lose extra power, which will definitely come in handy someday. In addition, in this case, the amount of internal memory will increase to 64 GB, and, as you know, there can never be too much of it.

Cameras

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 smartphone with 4 GB of RAM boasts a 13 MP main camera that is capable of recording video in 1080p resolution. It has an f/2.0 aperture, phase detection autofocus and dual LED flash. The MIUI 8 operating system has a built-in proprietary Camera application, with which you can manually set many parameters for shooting.

Examples of photos:

There are a huge variety of modes here - “Enhance”, “Voice”, “Tilt-Shift”, “Timer”, “Alignment”, “Scene”, “Panorama”, “Control” and even “Night Mode”. All of them, in fact, allow you to achieve certain effects or use some functions.

The main camera takes good photos in good and medium light conditions, but as soon as the light source disappears somewhere, the quality of the images immediately drops noticeably. The same can be said about video recording - the worse the light level, the lower the detail.

Note that if the lighting is good and the subject is nearby, then the photo with the main camera of the Redmi Note 4 will turn out to be of very good quality. There is even a blurring of the background, which is usually characteristic only of expensive mobile devices or models with a dual camera.

The front camera of the smartphone has a 5 megapixel resolution with an f/2.0 aperture and supports 1080p video recording. It doesn't have enough stars in the sky, but it can still provide good selfie shots. Of course, there is no talk of any high detail even in average lighting, but it is quite suitable for publishing pictures on Instagram or social networks.

The MIUI 8 operating system has a built-in feature that allows you to select one of several photo filters and apply it to a photo at the time of shooting. The function is certainly extremely useful and convenient.

All photos are available in original quality.

Battery

This smartphone has a 4100 mAh battery with support for fast charging at 2A/5V. As you can see, its capacity is quite large, but it is still not enough to provide two working days without recharging. The reason for this is the large 5.5-inch IPS screen, which consumes a large amount of electricity at maximum brightness.

In one night with activated cellular network(one SIM card), connected to Wi-Fi and an activated Bluetooth module, the Redmi Note 4 smartphone loses about 3-5% of its battery charge. This is a good indicator that can be significantly reduced by switching your mobile device to airplane mode while you sleep.

If we talk about everyday use, the device lasts approximately 7-9 hours of screen operation at medium brightness. Again, this is a very impressive figure that will allow you to avoid recharging your smartphone throughout the entire working day. The smartphone may not make it to the end of the second, but if you activate the energy saving mode built into the MIUI 8 firmware, it will definitely be able to.

As a result, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 smartphone Snapdragon processor 625 for autonomy you can give 9 points out of 10 possible. Still, I would like time battery life enough for 2 full working days, like the Redmi 4X smartphone. This could be achieved by installing not an IPS matrix, but an OLED one. This solution will reduce the power consumption of the screen, but will increase the cost of the entire smartphone.

cellular

The Redmi Note 4 smartphone in the international modification (Global Version) works perfectly in all fourth-generation LTE 4G networks in Russia. The device supports HD calls, which provide high quality transmitted audio. The microphones do their job well - they record sound perfectly, and with the help of additional microphones on the body, almost all external noise is cut out, be it the noise from a passing train, the roar of an engine or a powerful wind.

The device has a slot for installing two SIM cards, or one SIM card and one MicroSD memory card up to 128 GB inclusive. When using two SIM cards, only one of them can work in the fourth generation LTE 4G network. At the same time, both of them can simultaneously operate in 2G and 3G networks, which is especially important for remote areas located far from large cities.

There are no complaints about the quality of cellular network signal reception to the smartphone. It catches 3G and 4G LTE networks even where the iPhone 7 or iPhone SE cannot. This is definitely a big plus, which for many people can be a determining factor when choosing a smartphone.

Features that pleased you

This mobile device was not without some features that were really very pleasing. The first among these was the infrared port, with which you can control household appliances. All setup is done through the Mi Remote application preinstalled on the smartphone. This is convenient when, instead of several remote controls for a set-top box, TV and music center there is only one, and it is a smartphone that is always and everywhere at hand.

As we mentioned earlier, right above the smartphone screen is light at all small sizes. It can glow in different colors and blink quickly or slowly. So, for example, while sitting at a computer, you can immediately understand that someone called your phone, or an important notification arrived - all this is configured within operating system MIUI 8. If anyone basic settings seems small, you can always install third-party extensions from Google Play, which will allow you to customize every detail at your discretion.

The fingerprint scanner located on the back cover is surprisingly fast. Moreover, it works even when the smartphone is in deep sleep. Simply place your finger on the scanner and the device will instantly unlock and be ready for use. Not all smartphones have this functionality. Let's take the iPhone 7 as an example, in which you must first activate the screen, and only then unlock the device using Touch ID.

It’s very nice that the Redmi Note 4 smartphone supports hot-swappable SIM cards and MicroSD memory cards. This is extremely convenient, especially when you need to regularly rearrange operator cards. The device, after each such operation, does not need to be rebooted - everything starts working immediately and almost instantly. For comparison, the flagship Galaxy S8, for 54,990 rubles, has to be rebooted after each such operation, which is very annoying.

Conclusion

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 smartphone is a universal device of its kind for those buyers who want to buy themselves an advanced mobile device for all occasions. It's versatile in every way, from performance to battery life. The presence of slots for SIM cards and a MicroSD memory card allows you to use it with two mobile operators, or expand the memory to 128 GB, onto which you can then download hundreds of games, programs, films and TV series. If we compare all the pros and cons, there will be much more of the former.

Pros:

  • High quality build
  • Stylish design
  • Advanced fingerprint scanner
  • Clear MIUI 8 OS
  • Excellent IPS screen with good viewing angles
  • Good 2G/3G/4G signal reception
  • Impressive autonomy
  • IR port
  • MicroSD support up to 128 GB
  • High performance
  • Not bad cameras

Minuses:

  • There is no anti-glare coating on the screen
  • No contactless NFC module
  • microUSB connector (I would like USB Type-C)

You can buy the Redmi Note 4 smartphone in several modifications, the top of which is the version with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of ROM. It costs a little more than others, but the extra payment is worth it. Additional RAM and permanent memory will never be superfluous, especially since the performance and speed of the MIUI 8 operating system depends on the former.

Buy Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage is available in the official online store at a price of 16,990 rubles.

Redmi Note 4 is the 11th smartphone released by Xiaomi in 2016. It would seem that the mid-budget segment is already quite saturated with offers from this manufacturer. For example, relatively recently the market for affordable devices was “stormed” by the Redmi Note 3 Pro. Not everyone had yet managed to buy this device when the Redmi line was replenished with another phablet.

Now it remains to be seen whether the new product will compare favorably with its predecessor in terms of design, hardware, stability and cost. The first thing that may interest a potential buyer is that Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is equipped with a 10-core processor. And the price is more than attractive: from 167 USD for the 16 GB version. The 64 GB version will cost at least $222. Prices are current at the time of this review.

Characteristics of Xiaomi Redmi Note 4

The smartphone has quite serious hardware for its price category.

Appearance, connectors, buttons and sensors

The smartphone has an “all-metal” design: connoisseurs of high-quality assembly approve. The metal of the case is matte and does not slip in the hand. Instead of plastic inserts, there are much thinner plastic seams. The display and front panel are covered with 2.5D glass.

Color variations: silver/golden back panel combined with a white front panel, and gray “back” combined with a dark front panel. The back part is almost exactly the same as the top Redmi Pro, only a fingerprint scanner is installed in place of the second camera. There are no complaints about the speed and correct operation of the sensor.

Pronounced curves along the edges of the rear panel have a positive effect on the comfort of one-handed grip. A thin shiny edging emphasizes the oblique cut at the ends, adding extra charm to the design.

Touch navigation buttons are located at the bottom of the screen. They are illuminated very dimly, but this is enough for use in the dark. An event indicator light is installed above the screen in the right corner. The combined SIM card tray and flash drive slot is located on the left side, the power and volume control buttons are on the right.

On the bottom edge there is a MicroUSB connector (with OTG support), and on the sides of it there are neat holes. The fact that on the right is a speaker, on the left is a microphone. On the top edge there is a second microphone, an infrared port and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

Bottom line: visually and tactilely, Note 4 is perceived much better than its predecessor.

CPU

The hardware is based on the top-end MediaTek Helio X20 processor (64 bits, 10 cores). “Impact” performance is provided by 2 Cortex-A72 cores with a frequency of 2.1 GHz. The remaining 8 Cortex-A53 cores are less powerful and are distributed to process tasks that do not require high computing power. The graphics chip used is not the weak Mali-T880 MP4. The results of the synthetic performance test are also impressive: up to 85 thousand points in Antutu.

The characteristics “on paper” and the numbers in benchmarks are impressive. But reality is much more important. For this particular device, the importance of 10 cores is greatly overestimated. Yes, a smartphone can easily cope with any everyday tasks, the system interface works quickly. However, in the same “tanks” at maximum graphic settings You won't be able to play.

It is generally accepted that throttling is to blame for this situation: when a certain temperature level is reached, the processor automatically lowers the frequency. Naturally, at the expense of performance. In normal operation this is not noticeable, but a drop in FPS in 3D games and accompanying lags are guaranteed. But there will be no problems with overheating here.

Memory

The standard version received 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of main memory. The extended version has 3 GB of RAM, and the built-in storage is as much as 64 GB. There is a serious gap between versions in the built-in storage capacity. If necessary, the lack of free space for storing your own files can be offset by an external drive in MicroSD format (up to 128 GB). “You just” need to stop using a second SIM card.

Regardless of the amount of RAM (2 or 3 GB), undemanding users will be pleased with the fast and relatively stable operation of the device. But advanced users will encounter a lack of RAM even in the extended version (with 3 GB of RAM). You can run a maximum of 3 applications at the same time. If there are 4 or more of them, they are simply unloaded from RAM. It is impossible to force a smartphone to send notifications even from the most important applications: “protection” against memory overload is triggered.

There are suggestions that the reason lies in insufficiently optimized software. It is possible that future updates will improve the situation.

Autonomous operation

The battery is quite capacious: 4100 mAh. Autonomy is normal, but not outstanding: the charge is enough for 1 day of active use. With a moderate intensity of use - 1.5 days, for thrifty users the battery will last for 2 days. At maximum load, the smartphone can withstand 4-5 hours maximum. Fast charging technology is not supported. It will take 2 hours and 25 minutes to fully recharge the charge.

Camera

Great by day, terrible by night: this a brief description of 13-megapixel main camera in Xiaomi Redmi Note 4. A photo module with an f/2.0 aperture is complemented by a flash and fast PDAF autofocus. The interface of the Camera application is no different from others budget models Xiaomi, there is no full-fledged manual mode, only a simplified variation of it with basic capabilities.

There is no noticeable progress in improving shooting quality compared to previous models. During the day, in ideal lighting, you can get detailed pictures with good color rendition. Dynamic range medium, to improve the sharpness of photos, do not forget about the HDR mode. The device copes perfectly with macro photography.

Indoors at artificial lighting A soft noise reduction comes into play, so the level of detail is acceptable.

At night and in the evening, everything is expectedly bad: low detail, blurriness, noise.

Video recording is possible in a resolution of 1920 x 1080 (30 fps). Slow and fast motion shooting in HD resolution (1280 x 720) is supported. Videos are of normal quality, but the device is still better at taking photographs. The front camera (5 MP, f/2.0) produces quite acceptable results with sufficient lighting.

Display

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is equipped with a wonderful 5.5-inch IPS OGS display with FullHD resolution (1920 x 1080). The brightness range is wide; at the minimum backlight level, almost nothing is visible during the day, but in complete darkness the screen does not dazzle your eyes. At the maximum value (450 cd/m2), you can safely use your smartphone on a bright sunny day. Viewing angles are good, the loss of contrast can only be noticed when viewed from “extreme” angles.

A cheaper analogue is installed as protective glass Gorilla Glass(manufacturer not specified). In order for the first scratches to appear on the glass, it is enough to walk with the device in your pocket several times. The oleophobic layer is of fairly high quality: your finger glides across the glass with ease, and fingerprints are erased with one movement.

Networking capabilities

The hybrid tray can accommodate 2 SIM cards: one in micro format, the other in nano format (installed instead of a MicroSD flash drive). The smartphone can connect to 2G/3G/4G networks, and one of the SIM cards supports CDMA communication. Available bluetooth module 4.2, and WiFi is capable of operating in two bands: 2.4 and 5 GHz. It's nice to have an IR port that can be used for remote control home appliances. Navigation capabilities: GPS/A-GPS + GLONASS. The device copes well with the role of a navigator, and there are no questions about the operation of all other communications.

Sound

The main multimedia speaker is located on the bottom edge: another small difference from the Redmi Note 3. Thanks to this, the rear panel looks more harmonious. A incoming call is not muffled when the smartphone is lying on the table with the screen facing up. The sound quality is nothing special, the main thing is that the sound is not flat, and the volume level is average, that is, quite sufficient. The sound in good headphones is clear, loud, and detailed.

Software part

On this moment The smartphone has received an update to the global version of MIUI v8. This is a multilingual version, with Google services, without hieroglyphs and Chinese applications. The shell is based on Android 6.0 OS. It has a nice interface and flexible settings. At the same time, there are problems with optimizing the firmware (remember the problems with the RAM). During operation, less obvious defects may appear.

However, MIUI is regularly improved and updated. There is no doubt that over time, developers will bring the OS to an almost ideal state.

Individual characteristics

To unlock the display, you no longer need to lift your smartphone from the table and then turn it over to reach the scanner. Now the screen can be activated by double tap.

It is also worth mentioning such innovations as Dual apps and Second Space. The first allows you to “clone” any application in order to log in to it under two different accounts. The second allows you to divide the workspace into 2 profiles: each will have its own design, an individual set of software and its own settings.

Advantages and disadvantages

Pros:

  • good design, almost perfect assembly;
  • excellent screen for image quality;
  • presence of a fingerprint sensor, infrared port, light event indicator;
  • software utilities (Dual apps, Second Space, unlock with double tap);
  • CDMA support;
  • adequate cost.

Minuses:

  • severe throttling in games;
  • even with three GB of RAM, there is a lack of it (due to crude firmware);
  • hybrid slot for SIM and MicroSD.

Who is a smartphone suitable for?

For those who need a beautiful and functional phablet at a reasonable price. Adjusted for the fact that the user is ready to put up with the current instability of the software and does not count on high-quality night shots. It is cost-effective for Xiaomi fans to hold off on purchasing a device until stable firmware is released. Or skip the “four” altogether, waiting for the next model.

Our review of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 smartphone

No serious innovations have been noticed compared to Redmi Note 3 PRO. That is, owners of the third version make no sense to pay attention to the “four”. It’s another matter if we consider the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 as an independent device and do not make comparative analogies. In this case, this is a very successful smartphone worthy of attention.

Last year, a new smartphone was released to replace the popular Redmi Note 3. The lineup update was a busy one, and we received the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, which turned out to be a stripped-down version of the Redmi Pro.

Among the main features, first of all, it is worth noting: all-metal body, 10-core Helio X20 processor, MIUI V8 firmware on Android based 6.0, a 4100 mAh battery and a 5.5-inch Full HD display. This smartphone appeared not just to replace Redmi Note 3, but also to compete with models from LeEco and Vernee.

Equipment

The Redmi Note line of smartphones was initially not distinguished by the variety of its equipment. Everything is very standard: smartphone, Charger, microUSB cable, SIM eject tool, user manual and warranty card.

Design and build quality

The first smartphone with a metal body in the line was, but its appearance was deteriorated by two plastic stripes on the back panel. Now there are no such stripes on the back either. Xiaomi cover Redmi Note 4 has only two 1-mm lines, which are practically invisible and also indistinguishable to the touch.
On right side The phone body has a power button and a volume rocker. All the buttons on the case are made of aluminum, have a distinct movement, and your finger can quickly feel them.

On the left is a tray for two SIM cards. If necessary, instead of a second SIM card, you can install microSD.

On the bottom edge of the case there is a microUSB connector, a microphone and a pair of speaker grilles. However, in fact, there is only one speaker, but it has a large volume reserve.

The top part is the same as its predecessor - a 3.5 mm headset jack, an additional microphone hole and an infrared port (there is a pre-installed Mi Remote application to control compatible media devices).

At the top of the screen there are proximity and light sensors, an earpiece, an LED for notifications and a front-facing 5-megapixel camera. The glass on the front panel is slightly rounded at the edges, scratch-resistant and has an oleophobic coating.

Under the display are the familiar backlit capacitive buttons: “Home”, “Back”, “Menu”. If desired, you can change the action of each of them in the settings.

The back panel is made of aluminum and is slightly curved at the edges. At the top there is a main camera module, an LED flash and a fingerprint scanner.
The build quality is commendable. The body is tight, there is no play, and there are no squeaks when trying to bend it. This is what a quality smartphone should be like.

Despite the fact that Redmi Note 4 huge battery 4100 mAh, the phone weighs only 175 g, and the body thickness is 8.2 mm. The length and width of the case are 151 mm and 76 mm, respectively. For a 5.5-inch smartphone these are acceptable dimensions.

Display

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 has a 5.5-inch IPS screen with Full HD resolution. Even with such a diagonal, the image is displayed with high clarity, the pixel density reaches 441 ppi.

Viewing angles are close to ideal, color reproduction is natural, colors are rich and bright. Color distortion practically does not occur at a strong tilt.

By the way, at night you don’t even have to use a special reading mode, since the minimum screen brightness already allows you to read the text on the screen without stress. The maximum brightness level (450 cd/m²) is also comfortable for using the smartphone on a sunny day.

However, if necessary, you can leave automatic contrast adjustment enabled. Among the display modes there are standard, cold or warm.

There is no point in comparing this IPS display in terms of image quality with the Redmi Pro OLED screen, since when compared it is obvious that the picture on the Redmi Note 4 display will be a little blurry.

The touch screen recognizes up to 10 touches simultaneously. Fingers glide comfortably across the screen, which is protected by special 2.5D tempered glass.

Performance

The standard version of Redmi Note 4 received a MediaTek Helio X20 processor. The Pro version of the smartphone is equipped with a Snapdragon processor.
Helio X20 is ten-core, with three clusters: 4x Cortex-A53 with a frequency of up to 1.4 GHz, 4x Cortex-A53 with a frequency of up to 1.85 GHz, 2x Cortex-A72 with a frequency of up to 2.3 GHz. It would seem, why does a smartphone need a ten-core processor when quad-core processors are sufficient? But MediaTek has already proven that the Helio X20 does an excellent job of managing performance and power efficiency. The load on the battery increases only in powerful games and demanding applications.

Also, depending on the version, Redmi Note 4 received 2 or 3 GB of RAM. The model with 3GB of RAM showed a speed of 6Gb/s, which is quite good. Therefore, we would recommend choosing this particular smartphone model if you often run several applications at the same time. On the other hand, the multitasking performance of the version with 2GB of RAM is quite sufficient, since background applications The system automatically closes if there is not enough power. But because of this, the speed of work decreases.

With ordinary tasks such as surfing the web, chatting in social networks and watching videos - Redmi Note 4 can handle all this. Its MIUI V8 firmware based on Android 6 easily copes with any task and responds very quickly.

If you don’t have enough built-in memory, you can install a microSD card with a capacity of up to 128GB instead of a second SIM card. During the test, the read/write speed reached 48/107 MB/s.

The gaming performance of Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is comparable to other devices powered by the Helio X20 processor. The only problem is that there were lags in Asphalt 8, although the game is poorly optimized even for the Snapdragon 820. Any other graphically demanding game flies. By the way, after an hour of playing, the smartphone heated up to 38 degrees.

operating system

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 runs on MIUI 8.0 firmware, which is based on Android 6.0. If you decide to order a smartphone from China and save money, you will receive the system only in Chinese and English. You will have to either reflash the phone or try to Russify it. There are already Redmi Note 4 models on our market with official firmware in Russian with adequate translation.

With the ability to copy apps and support for two SIM cards, you can use two different numbers phones on WhatsApp.

Camera

The main camera of the smartphone is 12 megapixel with f/2.0 aperture. It shoots with excellent quality, but in good lighting. The quality of selfie photos has improved compared to front camera photos. There is also a noticeable improvement in color reproduction and sharpness. On the one hand, photos taken in low light conditions are not comparable to predecessor cameras. On the other hand, if you compare their quality with photos taken on cameras or, the pictures will seem faded and sometimes overexposed.

Autofocus is fast and camera response time is minimal. Also takes photos quickly in HDR mode. Unfortunately, if we compare Redmi Note 4 and Redmi Pro, the main camera does not do its job well – color reproduction suffers greatly. Maybe this is due to software, maybe the issue is in the camera module itself. In general, if you don't want to spend more than $200, but would like to get a good camera, then we can recommend Redmi Note 4.

Video – camera test on Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 smartphone

The video quality seems subjectively poor, the picture is unclear, and the camera lacks sharpness. The maximum shooting resolution is 1080p. There are Timelapse and Slo-mo modes.

Battery

Redmi Note 4 has a 4100 mAh battery. Due to the fact that the operating system additionally provides increased battery life through optimization, the smartphone will appeal to all skeptics.

When using the standard charger included in the package, the battery is charged to 100% in 1.5-2 hours. If you don’t strain your smartphone too much with overloads, it can work for 2 days. When compared with other popular Xiaomi smartphone models, Redmi Note 4 showed slightly worse results than. After receiving a firmware update this should probably be fixed.

During battery tests in PC Mark Battery, the following results were obtained: 9 hours of battery life, although the Redmi Note 3 Pro has 12 hours. But in the same Samsung test The Galaxy S7 was worse - only 8 hours.

If you set the screen brightness to 30% and turn on airplane mode, the smartphone will last 16 hours. With the same flight mode, at maximum screen brightness, we can watch video in HD resolution for 9 hours.

In general, it is obvious that even with very active use, Redmi Note 4 will work all day and you won’t have to look for a power outlet to recharge. With constant communication on social networks, web surfing, mobile internet and constant synchronization, the phone worked for more than 5 hours. Overnight the battery loses on average about 5% of its charge.

Redmi Note 4 battery supports fast charging. In 30 minutes the battery will be charged to 60%.

Results

pros

  • nice design;
  • excellent build quality;
  • clear Full HD screen;
  • fast MIUI 8 firmware.

minuses

  • mediocre shooting quality from the front camera.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 has strengthened the company's position and updated the standard of quality and specifications. Compared to its predecessor, the display, camera, and performance have improved. Battery life has been slightly reduced. In addition, the benefits of a fast processor are not as noticeable. There is also a lack of LTE support. On the other hand, if you can easily live without LTE, then Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is practically best smartphone for up to $200.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 does not shine with originality in terms of appearance. Its design is borrowed from the Xiaomi Redmi Pro, only one detail has changed - the fingerprint scanner has returned from the Home key to the back of the device, where the Redmi Pro now has a second camera. The appearance of the phone can be called neat and nice - not too wide frames, a metal back, slightly curved at the edges with stripes for antennas. Nothing remarkable, except for 2.5D glass (curved at the edges) and a fast-working fingerprint sensor, which every second new product of the season has, if not more. Fans of everything new may not like the presence of a MicroUSB connector rather than the more advanced USB Type-C.

The stated dimensions of the smartphone are 151x76x8.4 mm, weight - 175 grams, which is a bit heavy. Almost exactly like his older brother, but a little thicker. In terms of size, Redmi Note 4 is comparable to Huawei Honor 5X, but slightly heavier and thinner. But flagships like Oneplus 3 are still thinner and lighter. The body of the smartphone is made of aluminum alloy, so it has a non-removable cover with a battery and a modern scourge of phones - a combined card slot.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 can be purchased in three colors: dark gray (grey), silver (silver) and gold (golden).

Screen

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 smartphone is equipped with a 5.5-inch IPS display with Full HD resolution (1920×1280 pixels). This is perhaps one of the rare differences from the “older” Redmi Pro with a similar screen, but an AMOLED matrix. There is no information about protective glass or oleophobic coating. But the manufacturer promises wide viewing angles and fairly high brightness, up to 450 nits (like the Samsung Galaxy J1 2016 in “Outdoor” mode). To the eye it looks bright, rich and contrasting, even the viewing angles, as promised, are wide. True, on a sunny day the screen looks a little faded; you want to keep the brightness only at maximum all the time. The image on the display is quite clear, the pixel density is 401 per inch.

Camera

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 received 13 and 5 MP cameras typical for its price; they are not impressive in any way, but they cope with their main tasks. No other information has been announced about them yet, other than the presence of autofocus, phase focusing and flash. But perhaps they are the same as the Redmi Pro, whose main camera uses a Sony IMX 258 sensor with relatively large pixels (1.13 microns) and a relatively wide f/2.0 aperture. The Redmi Note 4 can take really good photos in good lighting, but indoors the photos are only satisfactory. The camera lacks more accurate color reproduction and saturation, but it focuses quickly. The shooting quality cannot be called bad, but it is inferior to other budget phones from the same Xiaomi company.

Communications

The communications set of Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 can be called good:

  • dual band and fast wifi a/b/g/n/ac with support Wi-Fi Direct
  • LTE (not yet known which category)
  • Bluetooth 4.2 with A2DP profile
  • A-GPS with GLONASS support
  • IR port
  • Micro-USB with OTG support for connecting peripherals.

The only thing missing from the top level is an NFC chip and a new USB connector. While there is no data about FM radio, it has often become neglected in metal models (for example, in the Samsung Galaxy S7 or Meizu Pro 6). In addition, we note that it is dual-SIM (Micro + Nano), but the slot for the second is combined; a memory card also applies for it - another reason to choose a modification with 64 GB of internal memory.

Battery

The autonomy of the phone can be assessed as high, and this is perhaps its main advantage. Capacity battery Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 has nominally increased from 4000 to 4100 mAh. For comparison, the Xiaomi Redmi Pro has 4050 mAh, while the Xiaomi Redmi Pro has the same 4100 mAh. With moderate use, the smartphone lasts for about two days. In active mode, it lasts for more than a day, which is good news, for example, for those who play Pokemon Go. The phone also supports MediaTek PumpExpress 2.0 fast charging.

Performance

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 will receive 2 or 3 GB of RAM (depending on the modification) and a ten-core Mediatek MT6797 Helio X20 chipset (frequencies up to 2.1 GHz) - a high-end solution by budget standards. For example, Meizu MX6 works on the same one. This smartphone cannot be called super powerful, but it is enough for smooth operation of the interface, browsing with several open tabs, applications and most games. It can only falter in multitasking mode and the most demanding games, since the graphics are handled by the Mali-T880 MP4, which is inferior to more expensive top-end solutions.

Memory

The internal memory capacity of Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is 16 (about 9.5 GB available to the user) or 64 GB. In the first case (and maybe in the second too), you will need a memory card slot; with its help you can add up to 256 GB.

Background

In August 2016, our beloved Xiaomi company officially presented its new budget phablet Redmi Note 4, which was not radically updated, but enough to be called the 4th version. Redmi Note 4 received a new more strict and monolithic design, an improved ten-core chipset Mediatek Helio X20, Mali T880 graphics chip, 16 GB, 32 GB, and then 64 GB of internal memory, as well as a new camera module. By the way, the main camera received an unexpected “downgrade” to 13 megapixels, however, the shooting quality has become significantly better. In fact, Xiaomi slightly modernized Redmi Note 3. And then the number of versions and modifications of Redmi Note 4 began to grow like a snowball and confused many buyers. Let's try to understand the diversity of these wonderful phones, so that there are certainly no questions about “Global Version”, “Band 20” and the like.

IMPORTANT

The global version of Redmi Note 4 powered by the Snapdragon 625 chip is specifically indicated by the red 'Global Version' inscription on the box. You can always buy this version of the smartphone on our website.

Chronology and versions

In August 2016, Redmi Note 4 based on the Helio X20 chip was introduced in two versions: 2+16 GB and 3+32 GB.

A little later, versions of Redmi Note 4 with memory 3+64 GB and 4+64 GB went on sale.
Then, at the end of January 2017, to the delight of fans of Qualcomm products, Xiaomi introduced the Indian version of Redmi Note 4, which was already powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor, but slightly different in design from the original version of the phablet: plastic upper and lower inserts instead of metal ones. Moreover, this model had its supported bands cut off and was, in fact, a local offer for India. Therefore, mi fans began to wait for the hero of early rumors of a certain, different version of the phablet, called Redmi Note 4X on Snapdragon 625, but with support for frequencies.

At the same time, the 2+16 GB versions of the first Chinese Redmi Note 4 were removed from sale.

Time passed and Redmi Note 4X was presented based on Snapdragon 625, memory 3+32 GB and 4+64 GB. All the same plastic inserts, a little more supported frequency ranges, but the coveted Band 20 never appeared.

And just a few months ago it happened. Xiaomi presented new version Redmi Note 4 Global Version. There are Taiwanese, Singaporean and Malaysian versions on the market. They all support Band 20.

Later, Xiaomi introduced another Chinese version of Redmi Note 4X with 4+64 GB with plastic inserts and... Helio X20 chip. Thus, versions of the phablet with 4+64 GB and Helio X20 are presented in different designs and for different markets: the first Chinese Redmi Note 4 is completely metal and the Chinese Redmi Note 4X with plastic inserts.

Good to know

  • The Chinese version has Bluetooth 4.2, while the global and Indian versions have Bluetooth 4.1.
  • The Global Redmi Note 4 comes with a Euro plug, so no adapter is needed.
  • Please note that the absence of B20 does not mean a lack of support for 4G LTE networks, it’s just that some operators may not use them. There are no main frequencies for our region except in the Indian version of the smartphone. In Europe and Russia, as well as in the former Soviet republics, it is often useful to have B20 (800 MHz). It is used as large operators, and there are fewer operators. Moreover, the latter B20 may be the only frequency for 4G LTE.
  • you can check which frequencies operators support in your city.
  • You cannot cut or add frequencies using firmware.
