Today I want to tell you about the HyperX Cloud Revolver gaming headset, the flagship product of Kingston's gaming division, one of the few headsets that is made for people, not annual financial reports.

But when creating many, many products (any kind at all), designers constantly have to deal with the fact that the product needs to be given properties that at the same time negatively affect each other. And okay, if we are talking about some kind of “strength” vs “lightness”. In products aimed at professional or extreme use, such contradictions are much more complicated. Equipment

The headset comes in a large and beautiful box. Inside there is another box, and the headphones themselves are already hidden in it, reliably protected by a large amount of polyethylene foam. To crush such packaging so much as to damage the contents in it, you have to try.

In addition to the headset, the box contains a detachable microphone, a two-meter fabric-braided extension cable, which turns into a universal 4-pin mini-jack (which is suitable for connecting to mobile devices, laptops and PS4 gamepads) into two regular ones - for connecting to a PC sound card. The extension cable has a volume control and microphone mute control with a clip. The volume control wheel is “analog” and has final positions: perhaps the solution is not as reliable as an optical encoder, but within the service life of the headset you are unlikely to encounter the problem of contact bounce. But volume control is more accurate and instantaneous, rather than stepwise and after the controller figures out which way the wheel is being turned.

There are no “bonuses” in the form of replaceable ear pads, colored pads or bags made of peeling pseudo-suede for carrying and storing the headset - it is understood that the headset is “combat” and will be used every day for its intended purpose: either for games or for music on the road.

Construction and materials

The overall concept of a gaming headset has been brought to near perfection here. At the heart of everything is an ultra-light steel frame, which is also a spring that presses the speaker cups to the head. The shape and thickness are chosen perfectly: the headphones fit well even on a small head, do not put pressure on a large skull, bend easily and fit perfectly. the initial state. Just for fun, I left the headphones in this form for a day, tying them with thread for reliability:

After 24 hours - like new, not the slightest distortion of the structure. A self-adjusting headband (soft tape with stretchable elements) is attached to the frame: fewer “sliding” structures - higher overall strength of the model. The speaker cups are mounted on hinges with two degrees of freedom (they are attached to a steel frame) and are made of impact-resistant plastic. A removable microphone and an integral (short) part of the wire are attached to the left.

The ear pads and the moving part of the headband are made of a special material that is as close in characteristics as possible to genuine leather. The maximum trouble that can happen to this coating is that it will crack over time. But it won’t peel off or fall off like leatherette on a cheap textile base. (note: By the way, in previous models HyperX Cloud, Cloud II and Cloud Core, a similar leatherette material was used as a material, but of a simpler class. Proper selection of the thickness of the base, binder layer and high-quality stitching with allowances for deformation effectively solved the problem of wear on the working surface).

Inside the Revolver ear pads there is a special material with a memory effect: it remembers everything you said or heard, takes the shape of your head and retains it under the influence of heat and load. After you remove the headset and it “cools down”, the cells are open the structure will be filled with air again and restore its original shape. With such material, the headset fits perfectly on your head, does not load it with excessive pressure and does not “remember” the only correct position on you forever, ensuring a comfortable fit and tight contact every time you put on the headphones.

And finally, the most interesting thing is the sound emitters. Previous HyeprX Clouds were quite good in all respects, but some users complained about the unbalanced sound panorama. New 50mm drivers with optimized frequency response and a new resonator sound better and much more neutral.

Playing audio

So, the most important thing. On past HyperX Cloud some reviewers and users complained about the bass: they say that there is too much of it and it is “boomy”, it clogs the entire stage and frankly interferes everywhere except in films. In HyperX Cloud Revolver, engineers took this feature into account and completely redesigned the design of the sound emitters. Firstly, the speakers themselves have changed: the resistance from 60 Ohms was reduced to 30 - now laptop audio cards, a PS4 gamepad or a regular smartphone can handle them without any problems (you can read from the guys from soundpal on their blog). Yes, purely theoretically, the “purity” of the sound may decrease somewhat, but this is a question of the target audience and usage scenarios. In this case, we are studying non-studio headphones for several tens (or even hundreds) of thousands of rubles for connoisseurs of oxygen-free copper. Secondly, the frequency response was corrected: the number and pumping of low frequencies decreased, and the middle and high frequency ranges received improved detail. So even those users who were satisfied with everything in previous models will be able to appreciate how much sharper and more balanced the sound has become.

Games and movies

Perhaps the explosions now sound less convincing and don’t shake the spine. But now the headset is suitable not only for listening to explosions and second-rate rap. ;) From the point of view of game audio, the special effects are still pleasant to the ear and do not feel like a dull “audio confirmation” of what is happening on the screen. Music... oh, everything is always complicated with it. Let's just say: there are headphones in the lower price range. Sometimes there are models that play surprisingly well, but you won’t find any miracles there. There is an average price range - here “plays well” - this is the norm, but there are also deviations, both for the better and for the worse. Well, there is an upper price range, beyond which the confrontation between lifeless transistors and warm lamps begins, a marvelous habitat network cables for 100,500 dollars and other perversions.

So here it is. In terms of reproduction of “ordinary” music, which most fully utilizes the entire spectrum of frequencies: rock, jazz, their modern derivatives - everything is wonderful. The sound is close to hi-end headphones, which is not what you expect from this kind of product. Especially if you take into account the fact that this is a gaming series of headsets with a corresponding imprint on the sound panorama.

The guitars play cleanly, the vocals (both high and low) sound pleasant, the drums are separated and do not merge into one rattling mess, the wind instruments are very juicy and rich in overtones, and low frequencies you will have enough, unless, of course, you live somewhere in the Bronx or Harlem area.

Just don’t think that the frequency response has now failed and there is no bass in the headphones. It’s just that in the previous model there were a little too many of them - now the balance is almost perfect, and hard rock sounds three-dimensional, and jazz compositions do not look flat, and opera vocals are conveyed well.

In general, with good music and a good signal source, you get a picture that is more typical for headphones costing 15-20 thousand rubles, rather than for a universal headset. Perhaps the sound is not so “clean”, but in terms of sound characteristics and balance, it is definitely better than many, many options.

Microphone

Don’t be confused by the thick boom of the microphone; it is flexible and holds its shape well, and it won’t break or fray from frequent use, as sometimes happens with thin “corrugated” microphone arms. The pickup is far from studio-quality and it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to record a hit on it at home, but no one is demanding that. The voice is recorded clearly and cleanly, spitting and breathing are reliably filtered special insert, external noise is cut off by a well-thought-out design.

For Skype and all sorts of RaidCalls, TeamSpeaks and other gaming systems voice communication fits almost perfectly. The voice is recognizable, no garbage is created on the air, what else is needed for happiness? It is correct that this entire system does not pick up interference. It’s probably funny to you now, but I have one headset in which, when the microphone is turned off, you can hear either some kind of radio with a lot of interference, or some kind of TV channel. It’s very difficult to figure out what exactly is starting to play in your interlocutor’s mind, but the very fact of such… gifts on the air is not encouraging. The situation is even worse with “internal” shielding: let’s say your microphone is turned off (with a button / switch / simply torn off from the headphones), and you are listening to music.
